may twenty-eighth

Five for May 27th:

Three day weekend starting now. Well, in a few hours anyway. Finally.

Coal Porter. We’re watching Mary Kate’s schnoodle the next couple of days. He’s tiny, gray, and has huge ears. And yes, his name is spelled "Coal".

New bike. Lisa got a sweet new Giant Dart 3 last night. We’re both rolling in style now. Inaugural ride in Forest Park tonight and Grant’s Trail tomorrow.

Black Diamond Heavies. They're playing tonight at some place I've never heard of right by our apartment. I haven't seen them before, but Lisa has. We’re planning on checking it out.

Oil spill. This shit is out of hand. I don't really know what good boycotting BP will do in the long run, but I'm definitely not going to be giving them any of my money as long as this continues.

may twenty-seventh

Five for May 27th:

Day Job. Sometimes I love my job, sometimes I don’t, but every day I am thankful of the fact that I get to go in to work in shorts and a t-shirt and walk around my office barefoot.

Bike. Lisa sold her Kona Smoke last night and is now in the market for a new bike. Going shopping tonight to check out some options.

Jimmy John’s. I’ve been good about bringing my lunch the last few days, but it’s too nice out today to resist the allure of sunshine. Time for a #6 vegetarian.

Sunglasses. Where can I get a good pair of Ray-Ban Aviator knockoffs?

Animals. I love them, and cruelty towards them makes my blood boil.

may twenty-sixth

Five for May 26th:

Pizza. We determined last night that the veggie pizza at Milo’s is our favorite thin crust pizza in St. Louis, narrowly beating out Elicia’s. Imo’s is dead to me.

Music Awards. If you’re so inclined, please vote for my band as “best pop band” in the 2010 RFT Music Awards, then go see us at the showcase on June 5th. 10:15 at Rue 13 on Washington. You won’t be (too) disappointed.

Birthday dinner. Meeting Lisa and family for a post-birthday dinner at Schlafly Bottleworks tonight. Hummus and pale ale is in my near future.

Dental floss. I need to just start carrying some around with me at all times.

New shorts. I have never gotten an article of clothing dirtier faster than I have this pair of new shorts. They look like I pulled them off a homeless person.

Five for May 25th:

Powerball. I didn’t win yet again, and I’ve played twice now. WTF?

Campers. I’ve been scouring Craigslist for cheap campers lately. Not that I’m actually in the market for one, but it’s interesting to see what they’re going for. Some day, it’ll happen. Till then, we’ve always got the annual RV show.

Bloody Mary. I want one right now, double the olives, with a stalk of asparagus. I'm all about the garnish.

Practice. Happening tonight after a week off. Next show is June 5th for the RFT awards showcase. More info forthcoming.

Guitar is sold. Sold my Danelectro U2 yesterday. The herd is getting thinner, which is great. It’s less stuff following me around, and in most cases, pure profit.

may twenty-fourth

Five for May 24th:

Summer is here. When you’re mildly uncomfortable after stepping outside for 3 seconds, you know it’s official. STL is now sunny, humid, and the bright outside till 8 pm. I welsome it with open arms. This winter sucked.

KC trip. Kansas city was all fun this weekend for Lisa’s birthday/Rob & Stefanie’s wedding. We drove in early for bloody marys with friends in Westport, the wedding was great, the food was awesome, and the after-party was fun despite Lisa’s sore feet.

Cool stuff. Scored a $1 tiki at the flea market in Kansas City yesterday morning. Also scored some almond milk bubble tea with boba and some natural beeswax chapstick.

Jersey Shore. I saw my first and hopefully only bit of Jersey Shore in the hotel room over the weekend. It dawned on me than not only do people actually watch this show, they model themselves after the cast. I now have absolute, firm proof that society is in an uncontrollable downward spiral toward mass stupidity.

3-day weekend. Memorial day weekend is coming up. Impromptu camping trip?

may twenty-first

Five for May 21st:

Happy birthday Lisa. Well, not yet, but tomorrow. And since I don’t post on the weekends, this is a preemptive “happy birthday”! Love you and wish you many more. And don’t worry, everything after 30 is a breeze.

Mad Men. Started watching season 3 last night. So far so good, but it’s not really drawing me in quite like the first two seasons did.

Selling stuff. I’ll be selling my white Danelectro U2 next week. Only a few guitars left until my stock is trimmed down to where I want it.

Kansas City. Hitting the road to KC tomorrow for Rob & Stef’s wedding/Lisa’s birthday celebration. It will be an epic mega-party.

Shows. Might go try to see the Sights tonight at the Wedge, but the early AM wake up call tomorrow may prevent it.

may twentieth

Five for May 20th:

Phone trouble. I think my Razr is starting to go downhill. It’s getting increasingly difficult to get it to charge lately. Generally speaking, I think these things have a life span of about 2 years, so mine has far outlived that at this point.

Payday. It’s tomorrow. Well, midnight tonight. It cannot come soon enough, as this has been a month of crazy expenses (a year’s worth of contacts, plane tickets, vacation money). Yikes.

More swag. Got a bunch of free stuff at work this week, including new front and kick-side heads for my bass drum and a bunch of guitar accessories.

I want a dog. I just wish we had some sort of yard. The only thing keeping us from getting one is the fact that we won’t just be able to let it out in the mornings.

Downtown Skybridge. Apparently I’m the only person on the planet that liked the old St. Louis Centre skybridge, which is getting demolished soon. I’m sad to see it go.

may nineteenth

Five for May 19th:

Lost viewing parties. I plan to just watch the last season on Netflix when it comes out. That said, even if I was currently following it, there is no way in hell I would go watch the series finale at some bar. A bunch of drunks talking over the last episode of Lost? I'll pass.

iPod. I’m glad I remembered it today. NPR was getting on my last nerve yesterday, and I’m in the mood for some Marked Men.

Fro-Yo. We got it again last night. I kind of overkilled on the toppings, and learned a valuable lesson in the process: just because it’s there doesn’t mean you need to put ten scoops of it onto your frozen yogurt.

Contacts. I’m no longer afraid of them. I’ve learned their secrets and defeated them. In and out, first try, every time. Well, almost. Last post about contacts ever, I swear.

Hiatus. Fair warning: Snap Flash Snap will be update-free from June 5-14, as I will be vacationing and not wanting to spend 10 minutes every morning recapping the happenings of the previous day. We will return to regularly scheduled updating starting June 15th.

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

may eighteenth

Five for May 18th:

Sun. After 8 days of nothing but clouds, the sun is finally back out today. I’m automatically in a better mood than I’ve been in for a week. Plus, we have a warm weekend coming up, which we get to spend in KC with friends.

Exercise. With the exception of one day where I only did 60, I’ve been sticking to my 100 sit-ups a day (minimum) regimen.

Terrene. Going there for dinner tonight to celebrate Lisa’s pre-birthday. I’ve never been there, but their menu looks great for vegetarians.

Chat. Talked online last night with my old best friend Chad. Chatting about the old neighborhood makes me really wish I was still 12 years old, riding BMX bikes or playing Nintendo all day. We’re planning to kick it soon.

Exile On Main Street. Everyone is talking about the new reissue of Exile that is coming out. I love this record, and reissues usually don’t excite me in the least, but the fact that there are a bunch of unearthed bonus tracks on it means I’ll probably end up snagging it.

Monday, May 17, 2010

may seventeenth

Five for May 17th:

SF trip. We've officially got (almost) all the details ironed out, and most importantly, the tickets reserved for our September SF trip. I cannot wait.

R.I.P. Dio. I can’t believe Dio is dead. I have to say, I did not fully appreciate Dio for quite some time, even as a teen, when heavy metal was my bread and butter. I’m downloading “Holy Diver” and “Mob Rules” tonight.

New jeans. With the impending destruction of my favorite pair of Sevens, my seemingly endless search for a new stylish yet comfortable pair of jeans has ended at the Gap, of all places. They also had a brownish-grey corduroy jacket I really wanted, but did not buy, but may go back for.

Rock. Fun show at the Wedge on Friday. Thanks to everyone who came out. It was the worldwide debut of a brand new song, so if you missed it, you missed out on history.

Trivia. We played trivia on Saturday night and our team tied for second place. Lisa also won a free yoga class in the silent auction. Good times.

Friday, May 14, 2010

may fourteenth

Five for May 14th:

City Museum. Last night was Midwest Mayhem at City Museum. Much fun was had, much climbing around was accomplished, and the bands were good. Note to event organizers: people will buy more drinks if they don’t have to stand in a 40-person line. More booths=more sales.

Mizu. Got some sushi there before the festival. They’ve got good food, but I wish they’d tone down the whole Washington-Avenue-Dance-Club vibe they’re going for. I don’t need to hear “Pump Up The Jam” blasted while enjoying a shrimp tempura roll and bowl of miso soup.

Rock show. We’re playing tonight at the Wedge with the Hibernauts. It’ll be off the hook, y’all. And it’s only five bucks!

Sit-ups. At least 100 a day until we go to South Carolina. No excuses.

Contacts. I’m sure you can't get enough of hearing me talk about my new contact lenses, but I’m excited about the fact that I can now get them out in about 2 minutes. Given it took me about 45 minutes a week ago, that’s a pretty stellar improvement.

Thursday, May 13, 2010

may thirteenth

Five for May 13th:

Midwest Mayhem. Tonight is the KDHX Midwest Mayhem music festival at City Museum. Free tickets to the City Museum will always, always be used, although I’m a bit disappointed that I never got my tickets for pledging. Good thing Lisa got two.

Scheduling conflicts. Got everything resolved with the overlapping RFT Music Awards showcase gig/our impending trip to South Carolina. Everything will work out and everyone will be happy. Whew.

Penn Station. Why are your artichoke sandwiches so delicious? I could eat one every day.

Mad Men. I think the next season showed up in the mail the other day. Looking forward to the continued adventures of Don Draper. In other news, we’re re-watching Arrested Development off and on. Best show ever?

Google Chrome. I need to put it on my work computer, because Internet Explorer officially sucks a fat one.

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

may twelfth

Five for May 12th:

Crime. The guy who broke into Pat’s (and several other people’s) cars last night is a punk bitch.

Leaving town. Over the course of the next month I’ll be out of town quite a bit. It’s just dawning on me how much I have coming up that will be crammed into such a small amount of time.

Murder City Devils. “In Name And Blood” is an awesome album, which I’ve been re-listening to off and on since watching their documentary “Rock & Roll Won’t Wait” on Netflix. I’ve seen them live at least 5 or 6 times, and 2 of them I would count among the best shows I’ve ever been to.

Injury. It feels like I pulled a muscle in my right shoulder. I just discovered this on the way to work. What the hell happened?

Storm. I rarely get woken up by thunder, but last night was definitely an exception. I haven’t heard thunder that loud in a long time.

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

may eleventh

Five for May 11th:

Practice. Band practice tonight for the show at the Wedge on Friday. We’ll be debuting a brand new song that night. You should go.

Contacts. My initial fears over getting my contacts in and out have subsided, and I’m actually getting the hang of it. No matter how difficult it is or isn’t, it’s worth it to have them. Just being able to put on sunglasses when it’s sunny out is a great thing.

Dentist. No cavities, and my teeth are now clean. The bad news? My last two wisdom teeth need to come out sometime in the near future. Dental assistant was taking about how much she liked Breaking Benjamin and Shinedown, as if getting your teeth scraped wasn’t bad enough on it’s own.

Fish tacos. I’m in the mood for them.

Summer. Bring on the hot weather. This cold, rainy overcast thing is getting on my nerves.

Monday, May 10, 2010

may tenth

Five for May 10th:

Comedy. Saw Neil Hamburger at Firebird on Friday night. He was great as usual. The opener, JP Incorporated, was also hilarious, and I was surprised at how good Clownvis was as well.

New stuff. Went to Fort Bellfontaine Park for the first time on Saturday for a hike with Lisa. It’s a 3 mile hike through an awesome, practically abandoned park by the river, filled with ruins to explore. I also got Fro-Yo for the first time this weekend. I'll definitely be back to both places.

Cinco de Mayo. Even though it didn’t really happen ON Cinco de Mayo, Cherokee Street’s festival was great, despite the fact that it was a little overcast and cool. Drank a pina colada out of a coconut, met some cool people, and had some of the best quesadillas ever. I want to move to Cherokee.

Mother's day. Hung out with mom, Josh and the rest of the immediate family on Sunday while Lisa hosted a brunch for her family at our pad.

Appointments. Going to see the dentist tonight and the eye doctor on Thursday for a follow up on my new contacts.

Friday, May 7, 2010

may seventh

Five for May 7th:

Contacts are go! I finally got contacts, and like everything else I've ever put off, I wish I’d done it sooner. Getting them in and out is a pain in the ass, but I’ll get the hang of it. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the newfound freedom of not wearing heavy glasses around all the time. It’s a strange sensation.

Gum. Why the hell isn’t Target carrying Stride Sweet Cinnamon gum anymore? Why does that gum always get the shaft? It’s bumming me out that I can’t find it anywhere.

NAMM. Looks like I’ll be heading to Nashville in June for the summer NAMM show. It’s the week after I get back from vacation to South Carolina. It’ll be a crazy couple of weeks. Hopefully Nashville will be dry by then.

Neil Hamburger. Tonight at Firebird. I’ll be there. Will you?

Drum heads. Finally got a bite on a bunch of drum heads I’ve been trying to sell for the past couple of months on and off. Should be selling them this weekend.

Thursday, May 6, 2010

may sixth

Five for May 6th:

Vision. Getting fitted for contacts today after work. I’m really looking forward to the amount of stuff I’ll be able to do not having to worry about my glasses all the time.

Cherokee Street. Planning on checking out the Cherokee street cinco de mayo festival on Saturday. Cherokee street is one of my favorite spots in St. Louis, bar none.

Car wash. I have a sick love of vacuuming the inside of my car and armorall-ing the dashboard. I did both things yesterday.

Hiking. Hitting up Hawn State Park this weekend for a hike. Time to commune with nature.

Chipotle. Met Lisa for lunch in the Loop. I’m a new fan of the rice bowl, and Lisa is a new fan of the Chipotle smoked tabasco sauce.

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

may fifth

Five for May 5th:

Cinco De Mayo. I don’t know if I’ll be going to, or trying at all costs to avoid, Mexican restaurants tonight. Time will tell.

Errands. After-work activities include hanging flyers, getting a car wash, and a potential visit to the eye care place for a vision test to get contacts.

KC trip. Only a few weeks till we road trip to KC for Rob & Stef’s nuptuals, and to hang out with friends.

Milo’s. Met up with the bocce crowd after band practice and met some cool new people. However, the fact that it took me three separate requests to finally get a drink earns their wait staff an “F” for the evening.

NPR. I’ve been listening to it at work the last few weeks, in lieu of the normal iPod shufflin’. I think I’m over it for now. I can only take Diane Rehm in small doses.

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

may fourth

Five for May 4th:

Riding in. It’s happening tomorrow. Wish I could’ve done it today, but the immediate after-work band practice forbids it.

Sickness. Lisa is coming down with the sore throat that seems to be going around.

Bonus. I’m getting a nice little bonus at work for selling the most discontinued stuff last month. Hopefully it’ll get tacked on to this upcoming check.

Tasers. That Philadelphia cop who tasered that kid on the baseball field should lose his job. Or lose some weight, and apprehend him like any normal person. Overweight cops are useless cops who have to resort to things like tasers when they can’t do their jobs.

Rock. Only 10 days till the Blind Eyes and the Hibernauts at the Wedge!

Monday, May 3, 2010

may third

Five for May 3rd:

Govinda’s fail. Tried to go to Govinda’s for dinner on Friday, but it was closed, perhaps permanently due to the overgrown weeds all over the place. We ended up at Rasoi, which was kind of our first choice anyway. Made it back to the car and beat the ensuing thunderstorm by mere seconds. In other news, I love the Central West End and want to live there.

Urban garden. Went to Beyer’s garden shop on Saturday. Our small balcony is now fully planted with flowers and basil. Stole a couple of cinder blocks to round it all out.

Party. Party for Stefanie and Rob in Columbia on Saturday night. Drank bourbon slush and ate a bunch of food, then went out for drinks at Sycamore afterward. “Patience” by Guns n’ Roses somehow ended up getting played twice on the iPod at the party, inciting a sing-along from half the party-goers (myself not included).

Walk. We’re on a strict regiment of nightly walk/ride plus sit ups until the trip to South Carolina next month. Gotta get the beach bod in shape.

Stand-up. Watched some Daniel Tosh stand-up last night. I’m not a huge fan of stand-up comedy, but I have to admit, it was pretty funny.
