january thirty-first

Five for January 31st:

In for nasty weather. We may indeed be on the verge of some. However, as I’ve said, this should really not be a shock to anyone living in the midwest in January. At least this weekend was sunny and in the mid 40’s.

Weekend. Hung out at the Handlebar for the first time on Friday night. Cool place, but I wish they’d just be a bar and not try to be a venue as well. Saturday night was karaoke birthday bash followed by drinks/Sleepy Kitty DJ spin at Royale, and Sunday night was dinner and more drinks at Bottleworks. Good times with good people.

W2s. Today is the federal deadline to get your W2s, and lo and behold, I still don’t have mine. Ask me if I’m shocked.

Toy trading. Finally made it to the dollar store to pick up some Ultraman knockoffs to send to a collector friend in SF. He owns his own toy company and is going to send me some of his stuff, even though his toys are expensive and boutiquey. Sort of an unfair trade, but I’ll take it.

Left at home. Things I forgot to bring with me today: lunch, gym bag, and iPod. Lovely.

january twenty-eighth

Five for January 28th:

Last night. Good practice, and good times hanging out at the Bleeding Deacon afterward. Side effects of pint-cans of Red Stripe include potentially forgetting to set your alarm when you get home.

Snow. I’m sick of seeing it and I’m sick of thinking about it- and compared much of the rest of the country, we’ve gotten off easy. This spring can’t get here quickly enough. Basically, I just want to break out my green Chucks.

Riots in Egypt. The developing situation there is really amazing to basically watch in real-time. It’ll be interesting to see where all this leads.

Friday. This week dragged on forever, but it’s Friday, and that means popcorn at work and La Pizza for lunch. Not sure what we’re doing tonight, but given I slept like crap last night, it may be nothing.

World domination. The Blind Eyes are in the process of planning it. Or, I should say, in the process of planning to plan for it.

january twenty-seventh

Five for January 27th:

Gym. I’ve gone the past 3 nights, and it’s awesome. Going directly after work is the best way to get it done.

Injuries. Things that I have cut my fingers on in the last 2 months: pocket knife, staples, cat claws, wooden packing crate. I need to start wearing metal gloves.

Practice. Hopefully I can remember to bring my cymbals and wear sensible shoes this time. This evening will also be Seth’s first practice with his new amp, which is actually the first guitar amp he has ever owned. So far in Blind Eyes, he has used amps belonging to Kevin and I exclusively.

Show poster. There’s a new Ted Leo poster floating around out there with our name on it. I’m just the show is still happening. May 8 at Off Broadway, dudes.

Driving like idiots. Is there no end to it? I don’t understand how it’s possible that fully-grown adults can’t grasp concepts like going the speed limit, signaling turns, and accelerating when the light turns green. The trip down Skinker this morning was maddening, I tell you.

january twenty-sixth

Five for January 26th:

State of the union. Watched a bit of it last night, and it seemed to go over pretty well on both sides of the aisle. It’ll be interesting to see how it pans out in the long run.

Rock show. The Blind Eyes will be playing with one of my all time favorite bands (and good friends) the Greenhornes on March 22 at the Firebird. In case you don’t know; the Greenhornes feature Jack and Patrick from the inimitable Raconteurs, and Jack also plays in the Dead Weather. They’re rad, and you should go.

Lunch fail. Made it, bagged it, refrigerated it, and forgot it. Ohwell, it’s not the first time and it won’t be the last. It’ll still be good for tomorrow.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Without doubt, this is one of the top worst movies I’ve ever seen. It’s painfully terrible. If it ever sees a sequel, we’re all doomed. As a huge G.I. Joe fan as a kid and as an adult, this was like watching your only child getting mangled in a car wreck.

Super Bowl party. Plans have been made. I don’t care what your position on sports is; if you don’t like going to super bowl parties, there is something wrong with you.

january twenty-fifth

Five for January 25th:

Gym. Did about an hour in the gym last night and am feeling pretty good, albeit a bit sore. Still, it feels good to not just be sitting on my ass for 24 hours straight.

Last night. Lisa’s thrown-together dinner of vegetarian chili mac and pear & gorgonzola salad was killer. Once again, she proves she cannot be topped.

State of the Union. Royale tonight for cocktails and the State of the Union watch party. Maybe we’ll see you there?

Technology. Every so often, usually at work, I’ll come into contact with somebody who doesn’t have email, or sometimes even a fax. I want to tell these people that they’re kind of stupid, but I never do.

Fish Fry season. It’s right around the corner. Looking forward to our weekly trip(s) to Joan of Arc. They give you beer while you’re standing in line!

january twenty-fourth

Five for January 24th:

Bocce. We weasled our way into the Italia-America bocce club on the hill with Mary and Keith on Friday night for a few rounds of indoor bocce. Cool place, but the smooth floor makes for a completely different experience than playing at Milo’s.

Gym membership. Signed up for one over the weekend. Planning on doing 3-5 miles on the treadmill 3 nights a week after work to start off. Tired of feeling like a sloth in the winter.

Free guitar. One perk of working for a guitar company is getting free production samples from China. This morning there was a Les Paul copy sitting on my desk, compliments of Chris. Thanks! I don’t really need another guitar, but there’s no passing that up.

Edamame. Our new go-to snack is steam-in-the-bag edamame. Hopefully we don’t burn out on it too fast.

Misery Obscura. Eerie Von’s new photo book of rare Misfits, Samhain, and Danzig pictures and stories is without doubt one of the coolest things ever. A must-have for any fan of the aforementioned bands. I would’ve shat myself sideways if I’d had this book when I was 18.

january twenty-first

Five for January 21st:

Practice. Last night’s practice was a good one. I think sometimes having a couple of weeks off from playing can be a good thing: songs feel and sound fresh and are just more fun to play. Plus, we are working on a new song that I think will be among the best we’ve ever written, and the best part is that it’s about 95% complete.

Tour. Tentative plans laid for midwest touring over the spring/summer following our record release. Going to try to do multiple long weekends to easy strike-zone cities and whatever else we can cram in. Looking forward to getting back out there.

Bike commuting. I can’t wait until this winter is over and I can break out my bike again. I just need to get my BMX pedals back on and I’ll be good to go. Those pedal cages were a bad idea.

St. Louis roads. People were complaining online all day yesterday about the roads in St. Louis still being terrible, but my commute home was a snap. The roads were almost totally clear and there were only a few slushy spots. So far as I can tell, they did a fine job.

Friday. This week blasted by, but then again, it was a pretty short work week. Today is La Pizza Friday. Not sure what’s on the plate for tonight or the rest of the weekend, but there is a lot going on, so I’ll probably see you somewhere.

january twentieth

Five for January 20th:

Snow. Yeah, it’s snowing. It’s January in the midwest, so it’s not really that shocking an event. The roads weren’t all that terrible and I made it to work maybe 10 minutes later than normal. Hopefully they’ll be a bit better after work.

Practice. As much as I’m not looking forward to lugging my drums over to Kevin’s house on his undoubtedly unplowed street, I am looking forward to our first real band practice in a couple of weeks tonight.

iPhone for Verizon. It’s just around the corner, but not sure if I’ll bite on it right away. I’m perfectly happy with my current (brand new) phone, plus I have a feeling there’ll be a good breaking-in period for it until the bugs are worked out. Not to mention they’re expensive. Still, it’s good to know that I can now get one if I want one. Good move.

Winter clothes. Today was a good day to break out the sweater, furry hat, gloves, and pea coat. However, I’m pissed that my new coat already has a loose button. Any seamstresses out there? I’ll buy you a beer to fix it.

Alabama. Word to the wise, Governor: not everyone believes in bullshit- and that aside, using the office of Governor to advocate for Christian conversion is a violation of the United States constitution. So go fuck yourself.

january nineteenth

Five for January 19th:

California. Finally back from Anaheim. The NAMM show was insane as usual, and by the end of the week my feet were numb and my brain was fried. That said, there were some good parts of the trip as well:

The weather. Anaheim/LA is absolutely beautiful. There was not an overcast day or a drop of rain the entire time we were there. Just sun and palm trees. I could get used to that. Coming from freezing cold St. Louis, it was extra nice.

Cheap Trick. Saw them for free at the Grove Theater on Saturday night, and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The place exploded for “Surrender”. That song alone made the whole trip worthwhile.

Free. With the exception of a few drinks here and there, the entire trip was free, as it was for work. Can’t beat 7 days of living free of charge. Now I just have to find all the receipts and fill out the expense report.

Comp day. Took yesterday off to recuperate from the trip and the jet lag, and spent the day drinking coffee, playing Red Dead Redemption, and watching Iron Maiden videos, which is pretty much as good as it gets.

january seventh

Five for January 7th:

The album is done. Mark it: at approximately 1:30 am on the morning of January 7, 2011, at Firebrand Recording in St. Louis, Missouri, the Blind Eyes finished their second album. It was a long, strange trip, and I’m glad it’s almost over. Just have to mix and send off.

Coffee. Lack of sleep (and, as a result, oversleeping) made a stop this morning to get coffee a must. Standard tall cup of Joe ended up winning out over an Americano, if only because I feared the headache that might ensue if I’d chosen the latter.

Friday. This week crawled by, as back-from-vacation weeks often do. Today, as always, is La Pizza Friday. Hopefully there will be some fun happening this weekend as well.

Travel. Lisa and I are starting to plot out travel plans for 2011. Lots of good ideas swirling around. Now we just need to find the time, money, and passports.

Hiatus. I’ll be in California for work all next week, hence things like writing on this and other blogs will likely grind to a halt until I get back. Facebook/Twitter updates shan’t be affected. Look for a spiffy LA wrap-up upon my return.

december sixth

Five for January 6th:

Shows. The Blind Eyes first show if 2011 will be opening for Ted Leo at Off Broadway on February 2nd. Should be a great show. Working on some other cool ones to kick off the year.

Ted Williams. The feel-good story of the year has already happened, and it’s only January 6th? Man, the rest of 2011 is going to be sort of anticlimactic. Also, anyone who hates on this guy is a dick.

Firebrand. In the studio tonight, finishing the album. This is it. Home stretch. We’re making it happen. Look for a March/April release at this point.

California. It is coming up fast. Trade shows are a ton of work, but just getting out of St. Louis for a few days will be pretty nice.

Lunch. I brought a PB&J for lunch today and I’m weirdly excited about it. Go figure.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011

january fifth

Five for January 5th:

Sickness. I started feeling crappy yesterday, and I think I might be coming down with Lisa’s cold. That said, I’m feeling pretty good this morning, so maybe not. We’ll see.

Studio. We’ll be at Firebrand tomorrow putting the finishing touches on the record. Hopefully this will be the last bit of work we do on it before mixing.

The Biggest Loser. Watching this show makes me really glad that I lost weight when I was still in high school. Believe it or not, there was a time when I was really, really fat. I could’ve gone either way, but I worked my ass off to lose it and have kept it off.

Police brutality. Once again, some shithead cop is caught on tape beating the crap out of someone in St. Louis. Y’all are brutalizin’ me.

Red Dead Redemption. I’ll probably be blogging about this game off and on until I finish it, but it rules. Just made it across the border to Mexico, where I already have a bounty on my head. I also shot an armadillo, which was exciting.

january fourth

Five for January 4th:

Moon. Cool flick, although Lisa thought it was boring and fell asleep. I’ve been a Sam Rockwell fan going all the way back to Clownhouse- which is still his best movie.

Groceries. Massive grocery run last night. It is amazing to me how quickly we run out of food. Lisa was hungry-shopping in a big way, evidenced by her purchase of onion dip, which a normal, saner Lisa never would have even glanced at.

Gambling with co-workers. I lost a grand total of $60 at the casino the other day on our yearly work trip. Not too terrible, but I always feel like a massive chump when I walk out of those places. I was ahead for a few rounds at the roulette table, however. Like they say: you gotta know when to walk away.

Bones Brigade movie. Word has it that there is a new Bones Brigade documentary being made this year. Since I saw that on Steve Caballero’s blog, I think it’s probably true. I’ll definitely see it, although I can’t imagine there’s too much story left to tell after all the special features on the boxed set.

New kicks. Forest green Chuck Taylor low-tops are making my year start off on the right foot. No pun intended.

january third

Five for January 3rd:

2011. 2010 was unbelievably amazing in so many ways that it will be hard to top, so here’s hoping 2011 will be at least as great if not better. I’m shooting for “better”.

New year’s eve. Potentially the most fun I’ve ever had playing a show. I’m beyond flattered that so many people decided to come out and spend their NYE with us. I hope we delivered you a good time as promised. I think we did. Check out some photos, courtesy of the inimitable Kate McDaniel, here.

Band. It’s shows like Friday’s and things like this post from my friend Mike Tomko that make being in a band worthwhile. All the other piddly stuff plays second fiddle to amazing shows and the fact that anyone actually appreciates what you do.

Island-themed entertainment. We finshed Lost over the weekend. Still not sure how I feel about that last episode, but I’m satisfied. Also, we watched “Shutter Island” last night, and I was surprised by how much I liked it.

This week. Dinner with mom, band practice, laundry, preparing for week long trip to California a week from today. Potential cookout with Mary and Keith. What else?
