august thirty-first

Five for August 31st:

Vans. Both the vehicle and the shoe are things I currently want. Add ‘em to the list. Speaking of the vehicle, I just threw down a few dollars to help Kevin Seconds get a new set-up, and you should too.

Bad moods. I realize that I’ve been getting in too many lately, and it’s bumming me out. I blame work, because I’m never in a bad mood in the morning. Starting today, I’m going to focus on not taking work crap home with me.

Voltron. As a fervent supporter of my city and lifelong Japanese toy enthusiast, I can’t help but dig this article. Ironically, this isn’t the first time Voltron has had some roots in St. Louis- the Trendmasters Voltron: The Third Dimension toys from back in the late 90’s (early 2000’s?) were designed in their downtown office before they were bought out.

Jack White. OK, kids. Mark it. As of August 31st, 2011, he has officially lost his fucking marbles.

House buying. We’re getting closer to making a decision, or at least an offer, on this house in Shrewsbury that we really like. More on this soon, I’m sure.

august thirtieth

Five for August 30th:

Summer. Is it really almost over? Jeebus. Fall is going to be here in no time. I don’t know that I’m really ready for that just yet, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t sort of looking forward to jacket weather.

Last night. Walked Henry, skated with Andy at Kingshighway for about an hour and a half, helped my brother move a couch to his new apartment, got groceries, and watched Reno 911 with Lisa on the couch. Decent Monday, all said.

Metal Gear Solid. I’m not sure I’d like it as much now as I did when it first came out, but I’ve been jonesing to play that game again. May have to hook up the old PS1 sometime soon and give it a shot.

My iPod. I’m sick of every last track of every last album on there. It’s in serious need of some new material. Anyone out there have a Mac with a ton of good music in your iTunes library? This is getting serious.

Sending out albums. It’s exhausting, and hard to figure out where to begin. However, the first barrage has gone out with a lot more behind it.

august twenty-ninth

Five for August 29th:

Road trip to Columbia. Headed west on Saturday for Oliver’s first birthday party. It was great hanging out that night with Como friends. I sorta miss going there every weekend. Also, Rob and Stefanie’s new pad is awesome.

Houses. Looked at a few places yesterday, all of which were pretty craptacular. Still trying to formulate a plan on this whole “house” thing. We’ll see what happens, but we have some decisions to make, for sure.

Skate spots. Going to the Kingshighway park tonight for a short skate jam with Andy, it’s going to be awesome outside weather-wise. You should come out. On a somewhat related note, they completely re-paved the parking lot across from our apartment over the weekend, which rules, as that is my #1 default skate spot. It was pretty tore up.

Best of STL poll. There’s still time to get online and vote for “With A Bang” as the best local album of the last twelve months! Come on, you know you want to. Voting ends today.

Riding bikes. Lisa and I are planning to go hit a trail some night after work this week. It will be the first time either of us has rode our bikes basically all summer, which is absurd to even think about.

august twenty-sixth

Five for August 26th:

Skateboards. That Nicky Guerrero deck is so rad. Just have to get some hardware, as my old t-bolts don’t seem to want to work with it. It’s amazing these boards are still available in such large quantities, but they were made at a time in the early 90’s when Powell didn’t see the writing on the wall and was still producing decks at the volume they were in the 1980s. Now, thirty-somethings in 2011 get to reap the benefits.

Band practice. Good one last night. Next show is October 1st at the Midtown Alley Street Fest with a bunch of awesome bands.

This weekend. Lots of stuff happening. Cleaning the apartment (needs to happen) and potentially my car (also needs to happen), Hanging out with Mary and Keith (dog party), Oliver’s first birthday party (kid party), checking out houses (house party), potential skate session at Kingshighway with Andy.

Rolling Stone. I’m no prude, but there’s some stuff in the new issue that, if I had seen as a kid, would have given me nightmares- pictures of Decapitated victims of Mexico's drug wars hanging from a bridge and a shirtless, mustachioed Anthony Kiedis among them.

Today. The Cramps' “Bad Music for Bad People” playing now. Left my messenger bag over at Kevin's last night, and I feel helpless without it. Came in to work and there was a bagel and cream cheese on my desk. Good way to kick off a Friday.

august twenty-fifth

Five for August 25th:

Steve Jobs. Even though I’m not much of an Apple user, I have nothing but respect for the guy. That said, did Apple stock/shareholders think he was just going to be around for eternity? At some point, he's out, one way or the other. If Apple is only good so long as Steve Jobs is around, that company is in big trouble.

Juice Magazine. Potentially the best skateboarding magazine ever. It’s like Thrasher on steroids. Got two back issues in the mail yesterday, and they’re amazing. I didn’t even know about this magazine till recently, but I’m hooked.

Last night. Put together a bunch of press kits to mail out, followed by a late post-yoga dinner with Lisa at Sandrina’s. Hadn’t been there in a few months, and it was awesome.

Tonight. Band practice at 6, and hopefully I’ll have time to pick up that Nicky Guerrero deck from UPS beforehand- unless they drop it off at my pad, which is unlikely.

Some things never change. Saw a bit of an interview with Dick Cheney on the Today Show this morning. It's somewhat comforting to know that he’s still Satan after all these years.

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

august twenty-fourth

Five for August 24th:

House party 2. Checked out the house in Shrewsbury last night with Lisa’s dad, and with the exception of a few little issues, everything seems to check out ok. We’re still not dead set on anything, but we could be getting close. Exciting stuff.

Nicky Guerrero. My NOS Guererro should be showing up in the mail tomorrow. Can’t wait to set it up and ride it, and finally retire my ’87 Gonz once and for all. New old stock Powell stuff is a total bargain right now.

Artwork. My friend Greg texted me a picture of a drawing I did when I was about 18 of a small monster reciting the lyrics to the Descendents’ “I Like Food”. He apparently liked it so much that he kept it for 15 years (and counting), and made several copies so as never to lose it. If we’re Facebook friends, you can see it here.

New Blind Eyes shirts. We finally got them. They look awesome, AND they’re printed on really sweet American Aparrel shirts for extra cool factor. Get one.

Dentist appointment. I guess it’s been awhile since I had one, but it doesn’t really seem that way to me. Either way, finally have one on the books for early September.

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

august twenty-third

Five for August 23rd:

Last night. Good meeting with Johnny from the Post-Dispatch at Royale. Got some details tentatively nailed down for our video shoot, which it looks like we’ll be doing in mid September.

Record spinning. Speaking of the Royale, Steve wants Seth and I to do a joint Blind Eyes record spin on a weekend night in September (still ironing out the date). I’ve never spun records before, but I think it’d be fun. Should be an interesting collaboration of record collections, for sure.

Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator. Watched it last night for the first time since it came out in 2001. It’s a lot better than I remember it, and the DVD is packed with special features, which I’m still getting through.

Tonight. Checking out a house we like with Lisa’s dad. I’m really into this place, even though it’s small. It’s got charm and a great backyard for Henry.

Cereal. It’s what’s for dinner.

Monday, August 22, 2011

august twenty-second

Five for August 22nd:

Food Truck Friday in Tower Grove Park. While it seems like a cool idea, it was in fact a colossal clusterfuck. Just way too many people and not enough facilities to service everyone. Lines were epic in length and slow-moving. We bailed on it and met Tom and Claire for dinner at King & I, which was way better.

Heavy Anchor. Checked it out for the first time on Saturday for the Peach album release show. Super cool venue, I was pleasantly surprised. The show was great as well, a lot of friends were out, and spirits were high. Rock.

Skating. Finally got a chance to skate the Kingshighway park with Andy. While it is, as my brother says, “total gnar”, it was an awesome time. A lot of cool locals and a surprising lack of pretension- everyone was just skating around and having a great time. Also, the No Coast Skateshop grand opening was on Saturday. Finally, a skate shop in South City. Tons of potential AND a mini-ramp. Can't go wrong.

Sleep. I took a little nap yesterday evening, which was a bad idea. I hardly got any sleep at all last night- maybe 2 hours tops. Might have to keep the coffee flowing today to avoid a crash.

Tonight. Meeting up with Seth and a guy from the Post Dispatch about shooting a live Blind Eyes video for a new segment they’re doing on local music. We have some ideas, and hopefully we can come up with something cool.

Friday, August 19, 2011

august nineteenth

Five for August 19th:

Band practice. A good one last night. Some potential changes in the works for the band- nothing drastic, all for the good, and all yet to be determined. Cryptic, I know.

Weekend. ‘Tis upon us. Hitting up the food trucks in Tower Grove Park tonight. Hanging out with Lisa tomorrow, followed by the Peach CD release show at Heavy Anchor. Belated birthday lunch with Mom on Sunday, and going to some open houses. Skateboarding may be in the cards as well.

Camping. I really want to plan a September trip with Henry and Lisa. I’ve been craving outdoor adventure, and it’s been way too long anyway. I think Henry would dig the great outdoors, at least once it cools off a bit more.

Women in politics. Michele Bachmann, Christine O’Donnell, and Sarah Palin are all currently being taken seriously by a large number of people. Take a minute to stew on that little sentence.

West Memphis Three. Looks like they may go free today- 18 years too late by most rational-thinking people’s standards, but free nonetheless.

Thursday, August 18, 2011

august eighteenth

Five for August 18th:

On the radar. Looked at a cool house last night that we like and is well within our price range. The pros definitely outweigh the cons by a wide margin. It was relieving to see a good one after the crapfest we witnessed last Saturday while checking places out. It has potential.

Band practice. Happening tonight. Excited to play some music. Should be an interesting practice, but (possibly) more on that later.

Walking the dog. Had a long walk around the neighborhood last night with Lisa and Henry. It’s awesome that her foot is getting better and we can all three go for walks again. In other dog news, Henry is helping Lisa out at the office today. He’ll be assisting in everything from filing paperwork to destroying his stuffed frog.

My birthday. It’s coming up soon-ish. I sent Lisa links to the two things that I want. She didn’t look at them yet, but correctly guessed that both items had skulls on them. I didn’t even really realize that, but yeah. They do. Sorry, babe. I hope you don’t mind that you’re marrying a glorified 13 year old.

Andrew Reynolds. Stay gold. A once-in-a-millenium level skateboarder.

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

august seventeenth

Five for August 17th:

Hanging out. Dinner with Lisa and a bunch of Rebecca’s family last night. Good night to sit outdoors. Had some insanely good vanilla porter.

House hunt. Continues tonight. Seems like a neverending process. It’s interesting to see what’s out there- there’s some seriously ugly stuff lurking behind those south city gingerbread houses. That said, there’s some great stuff, too.

T-shirts. The new Blind Eyes t-shirt design is looking pretty damn spiffy, if I do say so myself. Nate at House of 8 Legs, who also designed our “Brasil 1957” shirts, did the new one as well. We posted some pics on our Facebook page. They should be available in the next week or so, from us via mail or at shows.

Battlestar Galactica. Just finished season 3, and things are getting serious here, people. Once Lisa catches up, we’ll get into season 4.

Lunch. Slim pickins at home this morning. I threw together a peanut butter & banana wrap. We’ll see how that works out.

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

august sixteenth

Five for August 16th:

Happy birthday Mom. She’s 64 today, which means I’m going to be 34 in a month. Holy crap. Anyway, hope your birthday is a rad one- it sounds like it’s going to be.

Back to school. I’m glad I grew up in an age where kids still went back to school after Labor Day. This mid-August start date would’ve bummed me out to no end as a child.

Cheap toilet paper. Why do I keep buying it? It’s always a huge disappointment. Go big or go home.

Tonight. Taking Henry to the dog park while the weather is still amazing, followed by dinner with Lisa, Nate and Rebecca.

Band videos. A few new crowd-shot videos surfaced recently: this one on NME from the Pageant show last week, and two more on Youtube from Off Broadway a few weeks ago.

Monday, August 15, 2011

august fifteenth

Five for August 15th:

Brick By Chance & Fortune. Attended the documentary premier yesterday at the Tivoli. The whole event left me swelling with St. Louis pride. The documentary was amazing, the turnout was gigantic (line wrapping around the building), and the vibe was excellent. Top it off with a free brick-shaped cupcake? Total win. Congrats to Bill Streeter on an awesome achievement.

Friday. Beth’s party and my first time in the fabled El Lenador, which was one of the weirder places I’ve been in a long time. Awesome party, cheap beer, and a rad time.

Saturday. Checked out some wedding locales and houses with Lisa in the day, hung out with Mary and Keith in the evening. Lisa’s foot made the moonlight ramble ride an impossibility this year, which was a shame, because the weather was amazing.

Sunday. Went to JB skatepark with Greg in the morning, where once again I slammed pretty hard, but that’s par for the course. Lunch with Nate, Rebecca and Oliver in Soulard. Tivoli for the doc, then bbq with Seth, Lindsay, Lisa, Mary and Keith, plus the dogs.

Trader Joe’s. Lisa went hungry-shopping yesterday. We’re now stocked up on all sorts of stuff we wouldn’t normally buy. Which is fine by me.

Friday, August 12, 2011

august twelfth

Five for August 12th:

Friday. Finally. May go check out the free show at Pageant tonight. Looking at houses plus a potential wedding venue tomorrow. Have to skip the Moonlight Ramble tomorrow night due to Lisa’s foot, which is a bummer. Possibly skating with Andy, plus Bill Streeter’s flick at the Tivoli on Sunday. More to come, I’m sure.

In the mail. OK, so that DVD (We Are Skateboarders) showed up yesterday, not August 31st as it said on the USPS tracking page. It was alright, but the first part was actually kind of depressing as they just focused on these hesher-types and punk rock douchebags. The second half got much better, but in hindsight, I should’ve just got Hokus Pokus.

House hunt continues. As much as we loved the place we looked at yesterday, some pretty big flaws surfaced once Lisa’s dad took a look at it. However, the good part is that we now know the type of house we’re looking for, and we know we can get what we want in our price range.

Bones wheels factory tour. Man, this is so cool. I think this video just gave me a skate wheels fetish.

Chap Stick. Yesterday, I finished my first ever tube of Chap Stick without losing it somewhere. It’s a day that will live in infamy.

Thursday, August 11, 2011

august eleventh

Five for August 11th:

Rock show. Great night at the Pageant. We had an awesome crowd and people dug it. Sold some stuff, signed autograps, and had fun. It’s crazy to me what a huge production shows at the Pageant are. Good soundchecks, beer-stocked dressing rooms and stagehands hauling your gear off stage is something I could get used to.

Weather. It has been so nice outside, and I feel like a chump every second I spend sitting indoors- at work or otherwise. If it stays this nice over the weekend, I forsee some skateboarding.

USPS fail. Ordered a DVD from Amazon. The shipping info was emailed to me yesterday. It’s shipping out tomorrow and won’t be here till the 31st. 20 days? And the postal service wonders why people aren’t using them anymore?

Lunch. It was either make lunch or take a shower this morning. I opted for the latter. Looks like I’ll be plunking down some dollars for lunch today, but on the upside, it’s a beautiful day.

Tonight. Checking out the house we like again tonight, this time with Lisa’s eagle-eyed father in tow. This house is so amazing. Trying not to get my hopes up, as we’re nowhere near there. But we’re really digging it.

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

august tenth

Five for August 10th:

Rad house. We found an amazing house last night that we’re pretty much in love with. Checking it out again tomorrow with Lisa’s dad for his prognosis (he works on houses for a living). The downside? It’s over 2 grand to break our lease (4 months rent) on our apartment if we buy it. I guess in the grand scheme of things, that’s not too bad. But still.

Rock show. We’re playing tonight at the Pageant. Always fun to play there, and hopefully some folks will show up despite the fact that we’re playing at 7 pm. We’re playing with a band that has one of the guys from Twilight in it. Not that I’ve ever seen Twilight.

Hitler on Metallica. This video is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time. Every quote is epic. My sides hurt from laughter.

Soreness. Arms are feeling better, but they’re still pretty sore from that slam the other day. I was worried it’d affect my drumming, but I don’t think it’ll be an issue.

Gas. Prices are low. I filled up for $3.19 yesterday. Get it while it’s hot.

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

august ninth

Five for August 9th:

UK Riots. Posers. I’m all for clashing with authority over police brutality, but when all you’re doing is throwing shit and stealing electronics, you have no message.

Beautiful weather. Supposed to be in the 80’s all week with low humidity. Can’t really ask for anything better than that in the middle of August. I’ll be making the most of it whenever possible. Bike ride to work this week? Maybe Thursday.

Tonight. House hunting. So much out there to look at, it’s crazy. We’re having a great time checking places out.

High Life. Impromptu late evening hang-out at Mary and Keith’s. The weather made for good hot-tubbin’, we polished off a bottle of 3-buck Chuck, and Henry got some energy out.

Hazel. Hopefully she’ll have her feeding tube out and be coming home today with a clean bill of health. She’s been through a ton and has been a trooper the whole time.

Monday, August 8, 2011

august eighth

Five for August 8th:

Skateboarding. Hit a couple of south county skate parks yesterday morning with Andy, and it was a blast. The first park was just smooth concrete with some metal ramps, but then we went to JB and it was insane. Huge concrete park with tons of bowls. It was fun, even though both of us suck. I slammed hard at JB but just have some road rash and a sort arm to show for it.

Rock show. Fun times Saturday night at Off Broadway playing with Troubador Dali for their release show. Decent crowd, everyone had a good time, and I think we played well. If you missed us, we’re at the Pageant on Wednesday, but early (7-7:30).

Friday night. Dinner with Mary at Shaved Duck, drinks with Lisa’s sister at Chavas, more drinks with Seth and Lindsay at Bleeding Deacon afterward. The weather was cool and humidity-free, so we actually got to sit outside on the patio. Good stuff.

Houses. Following a stop at Kaldi’s for some much-needed iced latte action, we looked at a bunch of them on Saturday and went to some more open houses around south city yesterday. There are now a couple that we really like, and we’re going to check some more out tomorrow evening.

Hampton Ave. Yet another amazing article by Toby Weiss on Hampton avenue mid-century modern architecture. This is my stomping ground. Dig it.

Friday, August 5, 2011

august fifth

Five for August 5th:

Last night: Band practice was decent, doing another one on Saturday before the show. Impromptu burrito/nacho feast thrown together at home afterward, followed by Battlestar Galactica.

Internet. Spotty connection at work today. How does that still happen in 2011?

Office dog. Henry went to work with Lisa yesterday and spent the day wandering the office, charming her co-workers.

Weekend. Officially starts in t-minus 7 hours. Hanging out with friends tonight, checking out houses tomorrow (there’s one in particular we really like), playing a rock show, skating, and doing whatever else may come along. That said, gotta try to keep things on the cheap.

Joe Strummer. Watched the Joe Strummer documentary The Future Is Unwritten the other night. It was super interesting, especially the stuff about his pre-Clash years, and a must-see. If you’re into that sort of thing.

Thursday, August 4, 2011

august fourth

Five for August 4th:

Dinner with Mom. Good time last night discussing wedding stuff, home buying, and talking shit as usual. Thanks for picking up the tab on the CPK and the employee hookup on the copy of TransWorld.

Band practice. Happening tonight, after a skipped week last week. We have shows coming up, so gotta hop to it. I’m looking forward to playing some drums, it seems like it’s been forever.

Dear Congress. I try to keep things marginally non-political here, but honestly- you can all go fuck yourselves.

Coffee. Good stuff this morning: New Mexico Pinon at home (with time to enjoy it, nonetheless) and Starbucks on the way in to work. Feelin’ pretty awake at this point.

This morning. 77 degrees out when I was walking Henry, I almost couldn’t believe it. Not that it’s going to stick around, but it was a nice little relief while it lasted.

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

august third

Five for August 3rd:

Today. Seems like as good a morning as any to listen to some “Kill ‘Em All” and drink some weak coffee. Let’s do this thing. Dinner with mom and Lisa tonight.

Hanging out. It was too hot to sit outside at Milo’s last night, so we chilled in the AC with friends and had a few drinks. Topics of discussion included locals that think they’re hot shit (Brook Dubman and Terry Crouppen, among others) and neighborhoods we wouldn’t want to live in.

Wedding plans. They’re starting to come together, slowly but surely. Looking like it’ll be in April, but still ironing out the date and locale. I think we’ve got a pretty good idea on what’ll go down, and it should be an awesome time.

Columbia, Missouri. We haven’t been there in too long. I’d like to take the bikes out there when the weather cools down ride the Katy Trail out to Cooper’s Landing for some food from the Thai trailer. Sometimes I really miss going there every other weekend.

Henry. It’s rad when he sleeps in bed with us, as it keeps me from tossing and turning all night as he usually crashes right between my legs. The downside is that he wakes up with the sun, so if he’s not in his crate by then, he’s all over the place.

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

august second

Five for August 2nd:

AC/DC “Powerage”. I had the cassette stuck in my the tape deck of my Ford Escort for about a year straight in 2001, and got understandably sick of listening to it as a result. However, I’ve been jonesing for it again, and need to pick up a copy soon. This has been on my to-do list for about 6 months.

Houses. Checked ‘em out around south city with Lisa and our sorta-realtor. Found one we really like, right in our neighborhood. We’re going to be seeing more in Richmond Heights and Maplewood as well as Tower Grove soon.

In the mail. Free Thrasher shirt (well, free with renewed subscription), bottle opener, Powell “Street Wheels” t-shirt, Edward Jones IRA statement (I’m still not rich).

DVD of our album release show. Luke finally got it done, now I just need to pick it up from him sometime this week. Speaking of the band, we have two shows coming up in the next several days (6th at Off Broadway, 10th at the Pageant). Go to them.

Random thoughts. 1. The older I get, the more I realize how terrible I am at being an adult. 2. The Kings of Leon aren’t that good, and they need to recognize how damned lucky they are to be where they are despite their mediocrity.

Monday, August 1, 2011

august first

Five for August 1st:

Skating in south city. It was brutally hot, but fun. Found a five dollar bill and shot down to World Café for a root beer to celebrate. Score.

Cardinals vs. Cubs. Fun game, but as has been the case, the heat was almost too much to bear, even after the sun went down. Still, it was a good ole’ fashioned stomping of the cubs, and people freaked out for Pujols’ 2000th career hit. Good times playing some shuffleboard and eating free pizza afterward.

House hunting. Lisa and I are in the market to buy a house, and we started looking around a bit this weekend. There’s tons of stuff available in our price range, it’s a buyer’s market, interest rates are low, and we’re tired of not having a yard for Henry.

Bones Brigade Videos. Watched Future Primitive, Animal Chin (with commentary), Public Domain, AND Ban This over the weekend. Can’t wait for the new BB documentary to come out.

We Bring Justice. If I could go back in time, and was more creative, I might make my blog something like this.
