april thirtieth

Five for April 30th:

Skateboarding. Early morning session at JB with Andy on Saturday morning before the huge crowds showed up, and late afternoon jam over on the Hill with Josh, Luca, and Andy yesterday.

Sick as a dog. Henry must have got into something yesterday that didn’t agree with him, because he woke up puking a couple of times last night- thankfully not on our bed. Poor little dude. He’s all good this morning now, so I guess he got it all out of his system.

Sappington Farmer’s Market. I can’t believe I’ve never checked this place out before. We went for the first time on Saturday, and it was amazing. Tons of local produce (the cantaloupe samples we tried were insane) and the prices were completely reasonable. We’ll definitely be going back.

Lawn and garden. Lisa’s mom dropped off their old patio set, which we’re going to re-paint, and we got a bunch of additional lawn furniture from the backyard with wedding gift cards. Also going to spray paint and waterseal an old wood kitchen cart I have to put out on the deck for plant/bbq utensil storage. Finally starting to look like something.

Stormy weather. We got lucky- no hail damage from Saturday afternoon’s storm that we can see. The basement took in a ton of water, but thankfully our sump pump, dehumidifier, and box fan made quick work of that. Some of our friends weren’t so lucky and had some serious property damage.

april twenty-seventh

Five for April 27th:

Last night. Good practice (more new songs in the works than I can keep up with, which is a nice change of pace) followed by JD McPherson at Duck Room. Unlike the last time I saw him, he had his full band this time (tenor sax and piano) and they pretty much killed it.

Nick Halkias board collection. Jim Thiebaud just posted part two of this “Raiders of the Archives” segment on Twitter, and it’s amazing. This dude has the raddest collection of decks ever. Can’t wait to see the rest of it. On a somewhat related note, the March “eBay Watch” feature on Skate & Annoy went up today.

Coffee. I’m calling bullshit on Hardees. This is a “Columbian Blend” like my car is a Ferrari. But their egg and cheese biscuits saved my life this morning, so I forgive them.

Friday morning jams. Dandy Warhols, Iron Maiden, Kirk and the Jerks, Sub Society.

Weekend. No huge plans save for work around the house and some other random stuff. Skating if the weather is good. What’s happening?

april twenty-sixth

Five for April 26th:

Cool shows tonight. Baroness at Firebird, JD McPherson at Blueberry Hill. Going to one of them following band practice, likely JD. But it’s a definite toss up at this point.

The price you pay for living in a 116-year-old house. One of the steps on our back staircase cracked yesterday and now needs to be replaced. My ghetto attempt at fixing it met with sheer failure. Not the end of the world, but definitely not something we needed to deal with right now.

Thursday jams. Black Market Karma, Love, Band of Horses, and the soundtrack to “Ban This” while getting ready this morning.

Seafood. Lisa and I made good use of our Red Lobster gift card last night. Those crab legs and cheesy biscuits stood no chance. Red Lobster is a total guilty pleasure and I don’t care who knows it.

Elephant Skateboards. Starts shipping tomorrow, according to their online distro. The lineup looks insane.

april twenty-fifth

Five for April 25th:

Coal Porter. Henry’s best (dog) friend is coming to chill with us for a couple of days while Mary and Keith are out of town. It’ll definitely be a good time.

Ben & Jerry’s Greek frozen yogurt. Greek yogurt is awesome enough in and of itself, but a frozen version? Get some. The strawberry shortcake is amazing.

Skate session. Andy brought his ramp over to the Hill last night, and I brought the slider bar. Combined with the floodwall and the banks, we had a makeshift skate park setup that was fun as hell. Skated till soreness and darkness set in.

Harry Jumonji documentary. There are all sorts of documentaries about skaters and teams coming out these days, and here’s another. This guy totally flew under my radar forever, but I’ve been into him ever since reading an interview with him in Poweredge a year or so ago. Definitely interested in seeing the finished product.

Obama on Jimmy Fallon. This is some funny stuff.

april twenty-fourth

Five for April 24th:

No rest for the stupid. Note to self: don’t fall asleep for an hour on the couch after work, then drink a pot of Starbucks Sumatra dark roast coffee, then expect to actually be able to sleep that night. Lesson learned the hard way.

To-do list. Remember when I said how nice it was that we could finally relax? I forgot about having to return the keg to Schlafly, put a ton of stuff away, merge our phones (and finally get an iPhone), establish a joint savings account, write a mountain of thank-you notes, and get the remaining few items out of the apartment basement this weekend. So yeah.

Skateboarding. If the weather holds up, skating with Andy and possibly my brother on the Hill. If the weather doesn’t hold up, skating with Andy and possibly my brother at Ramp Riders. Either way: skating is happening. Set up my Powell Cab Stencil deck last night just in case.

Four weeks. That’s how long we must wait to find out a vital piece of information, which I, for one, am very excited to find out.

Larry Ransom. His site has tons of awesome videos and other stuff you need to check out, including his “Salad Days” film that I started watching last night and is really cool.

april twenty-third

Five for April 23rd:

Married. I’m beyond happy, excited, and proud to be able to call Lisa my wife. It’s been fifteen years in the making, and now it’s official. And really, it’s only just begun.

Shout-outs. So many thanks are in order that it’d be difficult to single them all out, so I’ll just say thanks- and that is a massive understatement- to all of our family and friends for the seemingly never-ending amount of support and help you gave us to make Saturday a reality. We appreciate it more than you can possibly know.

Load off. Life has been a blur since October, when we started looking at the house, through buying it, renovation, moving, planning the wedding, having the wedding, and everything else. It’s good to finally have some time to sit back, relax, and not have anything bearing down on us. For a little while, anyway.

Leftovers. Anyone want some Pappy’s pulled chicken, 3-Buck Chuck (Cabernet OR Shiraz), bottled Pappy’s BBQ sauce, plastic utensils, plastic cups, wine glasses, yellow napkins, or votive candles? Hit me up.

Grant Brittain Sk80’s photo exhibit. I’d love to go to this, but doesn’t seem like it’s in the cards. How about an online gallery for those of us that don’t live in San Diego? Speaking of skate photos, there’s a bunch of STL pics in the new Skateboard Mag, including Tower Grove Park and KHWY.

april nineteenth

Five for April 19th:

Record Store Day. Going to have to miss Saturday’s festivities this year because, well, I’m getting married. I think that’s a decent enough reason. There’s some stuff happening at Euclid on Sunday that I’ll try to catch if possible.

Neil Blender retrospective. John Grigley posted this link of classic Neil Blender photos and artwork on Facebook yesterday, and while it’s not exactly new, it’s fully worth checking out.

Out of luck. Yesterday wasn’t the best I’ve ever had. In addition to finding out someone had been using my debit card number to buy crap on iTunes, a package I was expecting from Fedex somehow got delivered to a Wal-Mart Supercenter somewhere. Fail. Alas, the money is being reimbursed and the package should be re-delivered, so it could be worse.

Smash-ups. Syrhea Conaway (AKA Syna So Pro) talks to the RFT about her St. Louis band a capella smashups, which my band was honored to be a part of earlier this week. Good read.

Blog hiatus. As mentioned above, this weekend, I’m getting’ hitched. Tomorrow is a day off from working/blogging to get things in order for the big day on Saturday. See you all on Monday.

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

april eighteenth

Five for April 18th:

Thin Lizzy BBC sessions. How am I just now finding out about these? They’re at the end of the Jailbreak deluxe edition, along with a bunch of remixes and alternate takes. Holy crap, it’s amazing. Spotify comes through with the win.

Photo shoot. Quick and painless. Did shots outside the house with Lisa, and inside with Henry in tow (he proved to be exceptionally good at sitting and looking into the camera). Plus I finally had a reason to tear down the final 2X4 HUD railing in front of the house. Looking forward to seeing the finished product when it comes out in May.

The calm before the storm. Tomorrow is the day that pretty much everything kicks into super-high gear for the wedding on Saturday. Taking off Friday to work on stuff around the house and get things in order.

Lottery winners. They won two hundred and eighteen million dollars, and they’re staying in Red Bud? I don’t think you could pay me $218 million to live in Red Bud. Seriously.

Fraudulent activity. To whoever purchased $250+ worth of iTunes bullshit with my check card number: eat a dick. No, seriously. Eat a dick.

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

april seventeenth

Five for April 17th:

Blind Eyes Re-envisioned. Local musician/artist Syna So Pro did a vocal smashup of Blind Eyes songs from “With A Bang”. This is the kind of thing that’s so amazing and flattering that I don’t even know what to say about it because it’s unbelievable to me that anyone would actually like us enough to do something like this. Anyway, it’s a must see. Also, another fan did a Blind Eyes/ Lil' Wayne sample track. Totally unreal.

Elephant explained. Mike V lays out the vital details on the upcoming Jersey Devil and Street Axe boards. I’m getting one of those Street Axes when they come out. Mark my words.

Dehumidified. I guess I underestimated the amount of moisture that was floating around in our basement, especially after a couple of days of rain. We got a dehumidifier the other night and I’ve already emptied the tank three times. This might go down as one of the best investments we’ve ever made.

Tonight. Lisa and I (and Henry) are doing a photo shoot for that realty newsletter. Should be interesting. Other activities may include weed whacking, taking the dog to the park, picking up the bar from the apartment for the wedding, and hanging out at Milo’s with the bocce crew. Or not.

Food fest. Chicken sausages with spicy mustard and baked beans, homemade oatmeal with coffee, Cadbury mini-eggs.

Monday, April 16, 2012

april sixteenth

Five for April 16th:

Five days. This week is full-tilt wedding week. Still plenty of things to get done, but it all goes down on Saturday, rain, sleet, or snow. Thankfully, looks like it’ll be sunshine.

Rock n’ roll weekend. The basic rundown: had one great show, one “eh” show, saw an indy flick at Second City, ate a bunch of rad food along with a bunch of gas station garbage, hung out with a ton of cool people, didn’t get enough sleep, laughed to the point of near-hyperventilation on more than one occasion, and bought a Thin Lizzy t-shirt. Overall amazing time.

Half marathon. Congrats to Lisa, who finished the Go! St. Louis half marathon yesterday. I hope it was worth all the soreness that has come with it (I think it was). I’m proud of you.

Around the house. Yesterday: assembled a sleeper sofa that will go in the upstairs office, bought a dehumidifier for the basement, and threw out a ton of crap we pulled out from under the laundry room during renovation. This week will be lawn mowing, weed whacking, and general cleaning for the wedding.

Monday morning jams. Iron Maiden, Band of Horses, Alice Cooper, Wire.

Friday, April 13, 2012

april thirteenth

Five for April 13th:

Rock and roll. Hitting the road in a couple of hours for shows in Chicago (tonight) and Beloit (tomorrow). I’m sort of looking at it as my bachelor party weekend, which also happens to be a short rock tour. I’ll take it.

Certified. Lisa and I can now officially get married thanks to the nice little old lady at city hall who asked a series of what seemed like overly personal questions.

Packed for the road. Going light- one backpack with everything in it, sleeping bag, and my super lightweight fold-up cot, just in case. Not risking sleeping on a hardwood floor or love seat again this go-round. Besides, there’s more than enough room for it. Better safe than sorry.

Fire Escape’s BBS List. When I tell people about the Internet “before the Internet”, I usually get a blank stare. But it did exist- sort of- in the form of local BBS’s, which I frequented before the advent of what we know now. I can almost hear my 2600-baud modem firing up looking at this page.

Blogs I check daily. Chrome Ball Incident, Skate & Annoy, We Bring Justice, Have You Seen Him, Bike Snob, KHVT. All linked on the right. Check 'em out.

Thursday, April 12, 2012

april twelfth

Five for April 12th:

Taking care of business. Henry is freshly groomed and looking sharp, I finally mailed off my taxes this morning, and we’re heading to city hall this afternoon to obtain our marriage license. In addition, Lisa's dad fixed our backyard outdoor electrical outlet and completed the handrail on our back porch yesterday.

Hitting the big time. The realty company Lisa and I bought our house through did an interview with us as the “featured buyers” in their upcoming May newsletter. Apparently we’re getting our picture taken for it too. I’m sure they’ll be flying off the shelf (e-shelf?), but if you want one, I’ll make sure to save you a copy.

Tonight. Rock practice for our Chicago/Beloit jaunt this weekend. I have a feeling this is going to be a fun-as-hell trip. Chicago is always good, and we’re doing a full set and spinning records afterward in Beloit. Skateboards will be brought.

Noodles. Mai Lee knows how to do ‘em right. If they just had a tofu option, they’d have it on total lockdown. For me, Pho Grand still has them beat.

Cool stuff. Santa Cruz 8.0 Guzman powerply, Black Label t-shirt, new issue of Thrasher, skate/rock road trip, bulk pack of fruit & nut trail mix bars.

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

april eleventh

Five for April 11th:

Ten days. Countdown to the wedding day. Fingers crossed for good weather. Still plenty to do to prepare, but progress is being made. It’s all coming together.

Mai Lee. Going tonight with Mary and Keith. Hopefully it’ll be less busy on a Wednesday night than it is on Fridays. The last time we were there was insane, but their food is good enough to warrant risking it.

Cocoa Pebbles. Is there any better complete-disregard-for-any-degree-of-healthy cereal? Besides Peanut Butter Crunch, I can’t really think of any. Not something I partake of with regularity, but every once in awhile, it’s the bomb.

Videos. Mike V Junkyard interview part 3 (make sure to check out parts 1 and 2), dudes killing it on Santa Cruz novelty decks. Also, very excited for the new Danny Way documentary, Waiting for Lightning.

Last night. BBQ chicken tacos outside on the grill, Target run with Lisa (bought new boxers for the first time in 10 years!), fetchin' it up with Henry, early pass-out on the couch. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

april tenth

Five for April 10th:

Henry. Going to Spotlight tomorrow for a day of beard-trimming, body-grooming, nail-clipping, dog-interacting fun.

Coffee. Picked up some Pike Place Roast for brewing at home, and a 12-pack of French Roast Vias to have at work. What did I do before Vias? Oh yeah. Drank the z-grade, “Always Save” sludge coffee at the office. Those days are over.

The Great Wall of Gnar. The third floor of our house is turning into a veritable skate museum.

Tonight. Grilling some food and possibly heading to Milo’s for some hanging-out on the patio. Post-bocce gelato? Stranger things have happened.

Kickstarter. I hate to be so cynical, this is getting silly. You want to open a bar? Then get the money together and do it. Fuck you for expecting potential patrons to fund your fucking business. Are you going to share the profit with me? Ownership? Decision making? No? Then why do you get my money? I'll tell you what, you open the bar, and I'll come buy a beer there. Maybe a sandwich.

Monday, April 9, 2012

april ninth

Five for April 9th:

Skating. Hit the Belleville park and checked out Infinity with Andy on Saturday, plus a quick session with my brother on the Hill and the Kingshighway park yesterday evening. It hit me that the last time my brother and I skated together before last night was probably close to 15 years ago.

Board haul. Traded an Anti-Hero complete to my brother for my old Black Label Matt Hensley that I bought in 1999, and he threw in a vintage Sims Kevin Staab and Vision Don Brown freestyle deck that he had in his trunk. Total score.

Mad Men. Totally forgot to watch it last night. I passed out mid-Family Guy anyway, so it probably would’ve been a bust even if I had it on.

Weekend. In addition to skating, got a bunch of stuff done around the house, finished up over at the apartment, ate some good food at various family functions (including the best macaroni and cheese of all time), got hit in the mouth with a Frisbee, and enjoyed the amazing weather. Good stuff.

The Internet in one sentence. “I'm OUTRAGED that I've purposely misunderstood you!" -Patrick Ness.

Friday, April 6, 2012

april sixth

Five for April 6th:

Guitar Wolf. They totally destroyed, as always. They put out more energy than any other band on the planet. 3 encores, the last of which featured Kevin onstage as a building block of a 12-person human pyramid topped by Guitar Wolf himself. Amazing.

Running on caffeine. Pot of coffee at home, grande cup from Starbucks on the way in to work, and picked up a pack of French Roast Vias, just in case. After the late night last night, it’s the only thing keeping me going.

Elephant Skateboards. They’re finally coming out this month. Their approach of using social media and videos to get people excited is a good one. Cool post about Board #1, but I’m more stoked on the Street Axe.

Bat pee saga. A friend of mine is getting semi-famous from having his eye peed into by a bat. True story.

Weekend. Finally here. Skating, running errands, buying stuff for the wedding, and attending pseudo-religious family functions are all on the menu.

Thursday, April 5, 2012

april fifth

Five for April 5th:

Onesto. They really stepped up their game big time since the last time Lisa and I were there, which we figured to be close to 3 years ago. Their pizza is eons better now. We’ll definitely be back. Plus I have awesome leftovers for lunch today.

Press. KDHX wrote a nice review of the show the other night. I didn’t realize we had attained “local legends” status, not that I’m complaining. Note that my “catchy drumming” is singled out. Just sayin’.

Guitar Wolf top song titles. Apache Leather, Kung Fu Ramone Culmination Tactic, Midnight Violence Rock’n Roll, Refrigerator Zero, Roaring Blood, Cyborg Kids. Seeya tonight at Firebird.

Fully Flared. Definitely rad. I know it’s a few years old, but it’s worth it for the Mariano, Koston, and Mike Carroll parts alone. It’s ALL street, which kinda bums me out. Variety is the spice of life, I always say. But it was free, so I can’t really complain.

Freshly mowed. The city finally got over to Clifton Heights park and mowed it, which is a relief. The grass was getting to be knee-high in places. Hopefully they’ll hit it again before the wedding in a couple weeks.

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

april fourth

Five for April 4th:

Rock show. Had a really great time last night at Plush for the Loufest lineup announcement party. We played well and met a lot of cool people. Awesome crowd, spirits were high, and the festival lineup is a good one this year.

Fountain on Locust. One scoop of chocolate, one scoop of vanilla, pile on the hot fudge. It’s what’s for dinner.

Tonight. May have to pass on Mission of Burma in favor of Guitar Wolf tomorrow night. If the weather is good, which is not looking likely, I’ll be weed whacking and maybe skating for a bit with Andy on the Hill. Possible trip to west county mall for mom visit/deals on books/pizza. We’ll see.

Cooldown. This morning’s low-sixties temperatures are a welcome reprieve from the mugginess of the last few days. Not that I mind the hot weather.

Wednesday jams. Cerebral Ballzy, Egg Hunt, the Clash, J Church.

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

april third

Five for April 3rd:

Tonight. We’re playing the Loufest announcement party at Plush with Morning Teleportation. We go on at 8:30 and the lineup will be revealed at 9:40. Excited to play Plush for the first time. Come out!

Diet root beer. I’m all about it right now for some reason. I go in weird phases with soda, and I’m fully in one now. I can’t get enough. I wish the good stuff wasn’t so expensive.

Fully Flared. Andy’s hooking me up with a burn of it tonight. I’ve been wanting to check it out for a long time. Also watched a bit of Since Day One last night, which, aside from being awesome, has one of the best soundtracks out there.

Jon Lumley 2042. Lots of updates if you haven’t checked it out in awhile. People seem to dig it, which is cool and flattering. Where’s my book deal?

Henry. He is truly the greatest dog ever. He’s pulling double duty today- chilling at home this morning, and helping Lisa out at the office this afternoon. Making an appointment for a pre-wedding grooming for him hopefully this week.

Monday, April 2, 2012

april second

Five for April 2nd:

Cool shows this week. Loufest show at Plush (we’re playing, so be there), Mission of Burma and Guitar Wolf at Firebird, Kentucky Knife Fight’s video premiere at Off Broadway. Don’t know if I’ll be able to make all of those, but certainly some.

Skating. Did a ton this weekend- skated the banks on the hill on Saturday and JB park on Sunday. My No Coast deck finally bit the dust as well, so I set up the Powell ripper and am totally digging it. Also watched the MV: Drive DVD. It was rad, but I wish it was longer.

Friends in town. Cool to see Rebecca, Herm, and Stefanie this weekend. Had an impromptu party at out house Saturday night complete with bonfire in the chiminea, courtesy of Keith and his neverending supply of firewood.

Monday. Coffee, hanging with Henry and Lisa, free bagels at work, “Ultimate Run DMC” on Spotify. Ranchito for lunch, low-90’s. I can dig it.

Impending nuptials. Less than 20 days away! So much stuff left to do, but thankfully the majority of the big stuff is all nailed down. It’s going to be awesome.
