march twenty-ninth

Five for March 29th:

Rock n’ roll. The Kinks tunes are sounding great, and I’m excited for the show tomorrow night. The best part is, I don’t have to bring any gear! Once again- we play around 11, we’re doing four songs, and if you dilly-dally, you probably won’t get in. Speaking of all that, I did an interview with the RFT about the show. Check it out.

Selling toys. A few years ago in the height of collecting, I could never have imagined selling ANY stuff off. While I’m definitely hanging onto a few key things, I’m moving through the rest of it on eBay with no regrets at all. Priorities change.

No sleep. A bad night for Jane equals a bad night for Lisa and I, and last night was one of the worst in awhile. Somehow, I don’t feel terrible this morning, but I can probably chalk that up to a cool shower and four cups of coffee (and counting).

Cool stuff. Pink grapefruit Perrier in cans, restored household feng shui, Vic Grip drumsticks, St. Louis friends exposing moronic cops, starting to feel like spring, TuneIn Radio app.

Weekend action. Busy one coming up. First off, Sara is in town visiting from SF. Chilling tonight. Jane’s first Easter egg hunt (which she’ll just be observing) in Clifton Heights Park tomorrow followed by a short practice and a rock show at Off Broadway. Brunch with Lisa’s family on Sunday. Skating, biking, building fires, being outside.

march twenty-eighth

Five for March 28th:

Henry. He’s looking sharp and feeling like a million bucks thanks to his fresh haircut yesterday. Apparently they got some video of him playing with some other dogs and are going to be posting it on Youtube. When and if it happens, I’ll link it up.

Iron Maiden. I used to sort of look at their early nineties-era stuff (No Prayer for the Dying and Fear of the Dark, specifically) as decent-at-best albums with a couple of really good songs each, but these days I’m really starting to appreciate them as complete records that are both very good. Only took me twenty years to realize that.

Grilling out. Another evening of awesome grilling last night. It’s all trial and error, but so far the results have been excellent. Grilled pork tenderloin with quinoa and vegetables was on the menu, and while it may have gotten slightly charred (lower heat next time), it was still amazing.

Cool stuff. Planning our anniversary weekend, replenished stock of good coffee, BMX magazines, warm weather and melting snow.

Tonight. Band practice, running songs for the show on Saturday, which is going to be awesome. Just generally looking forward to playing some music after a week off. Potential short skate session at Kingshighway with my brother beforehand.

march twenty-seventh

Five for March 27th:

Front room redux. Amazing what a new couch, chair, and rug will do for a room that was previously pretty uninteresting. Now we just need to get Lisa’s old couch out of the dining room and we’ll be good to go. Side note: Jane loves the chair.

Ev’rybody’s Gonna Be Happy. The Kinks tribute show we're playing at Off Broadway is coming up in mere days! Looking like it’s going to be a great one and is almost certainly going to sell out, possibly in advance, so get your tickets now. We play around 11 PM and are doing four songs, immediately following Old Lights. See you there.

Wednesday jams. Rolling Stones, new Strokes album (way better than I was expecting from hearing that advance track), KISS, the Muffs, Operation Ivy.

Cool stuff. New t-shirt, Skate Witches, fresh spring grooming for Henry, Boar’s Head turkey sandwiches on sweet rolls, Jumboland still exists.

Lunch skating. The pavement is dry, so I may try to do some cruising down in the Loop at lunch. The only thing that might be a problem is all the road salt, so may have to bag it until it’s more cleared out. We shall see.

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

march twenty-sixth

Five for March 26th:

Mixdown. Successful evening at the studio with Brian mixing the EP. Made some good progress and fixed a lot of small things that were bugging me. We’re on track for the mastering, and most importantly the release, which looks like it’s going to be mid-June.

Janey. Her new things are making spit bubbles and grabbing everything she can get her hands on (including my nose, which she likes to not let go of). She’s really close to being able to sit up, too, but she’s not quite there yet. She’s going to be on the move in no time. Scary.

The right to wed. Today is a big day. Hopefully the Supreme Court will do the right thing, and vote to support people’s right to be treated equally and with the respect and dignity they deserve as human beings. Period. Also, the Onion nails it as per usual.

Cool stuff. New furniture coming today, chicken chili, 60-degree upcoming weekend, 2013 Tampa Pro footage, sharing gear, two fresh pairs of drumsticks.

Tuesday tunes. CD of last night’s mixes, Aerosmith, Zeke, Green Day, the Cramps.

Monday, March 25, 2013

march twenty-fifth

Five for March 25th:

Snowblind. We got absolutely buried in snow yesterday. Naturally, the worst snowstorm of the year happens in spring. Last year at this time it was about 79 degrees out. Looks like we’re going to return to normalcy by the end of the week, but no matter what it’s going to take some time for all of this crap to melt off. Props to Modot for clearing the streets like ninjas once again.

New furniture. We decided to spring on some new furniture for our front living room, including a couch that hasn’t been destroyed by cats, a chair, and a new rug. Delivery was supposed to happen yesterday, but rescheduled to Tuesday thanks to the snow. Still, very stoked to get that room happening.

Skating. Saturday was sunny and beautiful, and my brother and I hit up JB for a short afternoon session with Kenny and Bryan. I was nailing back smith grinds on the small quarterpipe which was awesome.

Cool stuff. Winning the CEAM Trivia Night on Friday, Chocolate cake at work, Jane’s first snow experience, friends coming in town, t-shirt delivery, clean sheets.

Tonight. EP mixing at Firebrand after work with Seth. It’ll be nice to make some headway on that project, and hopefully we’ll have that part of it finished this evening.

Friday, March 22, 2013

march twenty-second

Five for March 22nd:

Album productivity. Not only did we basically nail down the theme for the EP cover art last night, I’m pretty sure we actually got the photo as well. Fingers crossed that Doug got the shot, but it’s looking promising. A big part of the project is almost crossed off.

Winter sucks. After a little glimmer of spring hope, the shitty weather continues on unabated with the potential for multiple inches of snow this weekend. I’m not going to lie: it’s bumming me out big time. That said; I’m still appreciating the long evenings.

Grilling. Having a gas grill is the best thing ever. It’s completely changed my outlook on barbecuing, which is something I was never too excited about doing before because it was so laborious and hit-or-miss on a charcoal grill (for me, anyway). We’ve been grilling like crazy lately, and everything has been amazing.

Cool stuff. Payday, David Cross/Bob Odenkirk stand-up tour (come to STL), fruit salad, Jane almost rolling to her right, good night’s sleep, Newcastle.

Weekend action. Plans include trivia night tonight with a bunch of friends, kicking it with my mom (who’s really kicking it with Jane) tomorrow, possibly buying some new living room furniture, short band meeting on Sunday, and maybe trying to squeeze in some skating somewhere if it’s possible.

Thursday, March 21, 2013

march twenty-first

Five for March 21st:

Album art. Meeting with our buddy Doug (who shot the cover of With a Bang) tonight to go over ideas for EP artwork. No practice, but getting some band stuff done anyway. Hopefully we can make some good headway on it.

Sleep, or lack thereof. Jane had a rough night last night, although she has definitely had worse. It was, however, bad enough that I’m hitting the coffee pot pretty hard this morning, and will likely continue to do so throughout the day.

James Hetfield. Every time he has ever said “yeah”. I'm fairly certain this is why the internet exists.

Cool stuff. Golden Grahams, new issue of The Skateboard Mag, fresh pack of Vias, taking Jane to the store, eBaying stuff, Bones Brigade 1988 Intelligence Report, the soda machine of the future, mind-blowing bubble wrap art.

Thursday tunes. Danzig, Hellacopters, Tommy Guerrero, Rodriguez, Jawbox, Suicidal Tendencies, Greenhornes.

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

march twentieth

Five for March 20th:

First day of spring. Welcome, friends. You wouldn’t know it by the grey skies and 30-degree temperature in STL, but we’ve finally crossed the threshold. Clifton Heights Park is already showing some signs of blooming up.

Las Palmas. Went there for an impromptu dinner last night with Jane in tow- our first time there since January of 2012, which is where and when Lisa told me she thought she “might be pregnant”. Aww. Side note: awesome enchiladas.

Henry. About time to get the dog his seasonal grooming. He’s reaching absurd levels of shagginess.

Cool Stuff. Lord of the Rings marathons, real ice cream, Maiden England finally getting a proper DVD release, box of wine, upcoming springtime bowl skating at YAP, BioShock Infinite, fresh eggs from our neighbors.

Cleaning up the iPhone. Copying about 600 Jane pictures- none of which I can bring myself to delete- to a thumb drive should help free up some space on my increasingly cluttered iPhone. Long time coming.

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

march nineteenth

Five for March 19th:

Skateboarding. Last night was “old man” night at Ramp Riders, which meant anyone over thirty skated for free. Free? I’ll take it. Met up with my brother and we skated the mini-ramp for about 2 ½ hours. Well worth the soreness I’m feeling this morning.

Henry Rollins. A great piece on the horrifying Stubenville rape case. Pretty much nails it right on the head if you ask me. Disgusting enough by itself, amplified a million percent now that I'm a father.

Hitting the beach. July can't get here quickly enough.

Cool stuff. Good leftovers, Blueprint Coffee opening in the Loop, setting goals, night showering, Monday mixing session, Jane noticing clouds, birds, and blue skies.

Instagram. Posted my thousandth photo over the weekend. A thousand pictures? Seems impossible. Definitely my favorite app/social media destination these days.

Monday, March 18, 2013

march eighteenth

Five for March 18th:

Solid foods. Jane is now a connoisseur of rice cereal, sweet potatoes, peas, and as of this weekend, bananas. She digs it.

Spring. It’s official as of Wednesday, although it only feels like it sporadically these days. I’m fully ready for the real deal.

Right neighborly. The guy in the house behind us accidentally shot our window with a bb gun and put a hole in it while he was trying to shoot squirrels or something. What a bummer. Luckily we saw it go down and it's all being resolved.

Cool stuff. Crab legs, Tommy Guerrero on Spotify, remodeled King & I dining room, coffee maker repaired itself, friends in town, backyard bonfire, new books for Jane, bank skating.

Craft beer takeover. Living in St. Louis is like being in the epicenter of the big beer vs. craft beer battle. It’s interesting to watch. The bubble will surely burst, but for right now, this is the place to be if you want variety.

Friday, March 15, 2013

march fifteenth

Five for March 15th:

Spring weather. Today is supposed to get up to 74 with full sunshine. Too bad the weekend looks like it’s going to be a rainout. I’ll take what I can get though.

Good mail day. New issue of Transworld, VSW Gator 2 reissue (which I can’t wait to set up) that came with a bunch of free stickers, some Gullwing hardware, and a little fingerboard- none of which I was expecting.

Band practice. Last night was great. Polished off the last two songs for the Kinks tribute show on March 30th. Pretty excited about how well everything came together, and the fact that it’s actually sounding good.

Cool stuff. Crock pot brisket tacos, mornings with Jane, leaving work early, Black Flag at Fubar in June, Detroit Rock City, Jawbox on Spotify, Vimeo app.

Weekend. It’s finally here after an ass-dragger of a workweek. Plans include getting crab legs tonight followed by some potential backyard chilling around the chiminea, birthday party at Katie G’s on Saturday, and skating with my brother on Sunday. Anything else remains to be seen.

Thursday, March 14, 2013

march fourteenth

Five for March 14th:

Hanging out. Good times kicking it with friends at Good Pie and Urban Chestnut. Going out on a weeknight is such a rarity these days that just doing it is a treat unto itself, made all the better by good food and drinks. Note: if you can find Founders All Day IPA (no pun intended), get a pint.

The Pope. I was shocked- shocked to hear that the new Pope is old, white, anti-gay, and anti-abortion. Whut?

Planning. The future, vacations, jobs, budgets, schools. The planning doesn't stop.

Cool stuff. Toasted bagel and dark roast coffee, Gator 2 reissue, new issue of Juice coming out soon, glitch furniture.

Band practice. This evening. Kinks revue, parts two and three. Hopefully by the end of the night (no pun intended, again) we’ll have all four songs for the tribute show dialed in.

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

march thirteenth

Five for March 13th:

Barbecuing. Having a gas grill is where it’s at. I’ll always have a soft spot for charcoal grilling, but there’s no beating the efficiency and speed of the gas grill. Last night we barbecued for the third time in the last four days, and it was amazing. I must say: I’m getting pretty good at it.

Selling junk. Put some more toys up on eBay this morning. Getting through it, slowly but surely. It’s so easy on the iPhone app that I really don’t have any excuse (other than laziness) for not getting more done faster.

R.I.P. Clive Burr. Put on “Number of the Beast” and raise a drink to one of the all-time greats.

Cool Stuff. Eliminate DST petition, lunch skating, Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat, Andrew W.K. interview, Jane’s infatuation with my coffee mug, Lego bombing.

Tonight. Home to walk Henry, kick it with Jane for a bit, and then out to get food and drinks with Anna and crew to celebrate the finishing of her dissertation. Going to good pie for pizza, and we haven’t been there in years, so it should be a good time.

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

march twelfth

Five for March 12th:

Five months. Jane will turn five months old (officially) at 4:20 this afternoon, but true to form, we already did her official photo shoot. I mean it when I say it seems like it was yesterday that we did her four-month photo. Time can officially stop flying now.

Lunch shredding. The sun is back out and it’ll get up around 50 for the high this afternoon, which means skating the Loop at lunch is very likely going to happen- especially since the normal Monday sesh didn’t go down last night.

Iron Maiden beer. The whole “bands having their own line of alcoholic beverage” thing is getting a little played out, but this is one that I can definitely get behind. I’m going to have to track down a case as soon as possible.

Cool stuff. Netflix on the iPhone, getting Henry properly medicated, honey nut Cheerios, Skate Fate, Highway 61 Revisited.

R.I.P. Mongo. It's never easy to lose a pet. Sorry, Mom. He was well loved.

Monday, March 11, 2013

march eleventh

Five for March 11th:

Daylight is back. Finally. The clocks have sprung forward once again. Celebrated it last night with a 6:30 pm, still-light-out barbecue on the back porch. Also, Schlafly Summer Lager comes back out tomorrow. Mood: instantly improved.

Sweet rolls. Is there any better bread to make sandwiches with? The answer is no. If your sandwich isn’t on a Hawaiian sweet roll, you’re doing it wrong.

Vacationing. Dates for summer family vacation have been set, and to say we could use one is the understatement of the year. Traveling with Jane on a plane should be an interesting experience.

Cool stuff. Saturday skating on the Hill, giant bag of coffee, EP mastering, backyard grilling, new front tire tube on my bike, Walking Dead.

Fish Fry. We checked out St. Stephens on Friday, and while the food was definitely good, the line was insanely long and it took forever to get through it. We’re on borrowed time in the evenings with Janey as it is. All said, though, it was a fun time.

Friday, March 8, 2013

march eighth

Five for March 8th:

Practice. Great one last night. Any worries I might have had about whether or not we’ll be able to pull off this short Kinks set are all but laid to rest. We got through two of the four tunes like we’d been playing them for years. It pays to do your homework.

Fish fry season. We’re about halfway through and I’m glad to say we haven’t missed one yet. Nor shall we. Hitting a new one tonight. Despite the superior fish last week in North County, Epiphany is still #1 with a bullet so far.

Lunch skating. Went to the Loop and cruised around for a bit yesterday afternoon. The new setup is killer, and the weather was awesome. Good way to spend 45 minutes during a workday.

Cool stuff. Playing guitar for Jane, free pizza, 55-degree weather, payday, weekend bmx/skating, Daylight Savings starts Sunday.

Bum deal. My plans to ride to work today were quickly dashed this morning when I blew my front tube airing up my tires. Better to happen in my basement than halfway to the office, though.

Thursday, March 7, 2013

march seventh

Five for March 7th:

Jane day. Today was my first-ever complete solo morning with Jane, wherein Lisa was gone before she woke up and it was up to me to handle feeding, changing, medicine, and everything in between. Of course it went off without a hitch, but it definitely made me appreciate how much easier managing a baby (plus a house, dog, and two cats) is with two people.

Ten-day forecast. Spring is upon us, my friends. Rejoice.

Burger delivery. Such a thing does exist in south St. Louis, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Stick to pizza. Trust me on this one.

Cool stuff. Starbucks Tribute Blend, lunch skating, Battlestar Galactica re-runs, Rhino Bucket on Spotify, Breaking Bad 1995-style makeover, pilfering Girl Scout cookies.

Rock band. Tonight we’ll be running Kinks songs and probably little else in preparation for our next show. Aside from that, we finally got the mixes back from Brian so we’ll give those a once-over and get to work on mastering. It’s all happening.

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

march sixth

Five for March 6th:

Four more years. Slay wins a historic fourth term as Mayor of STL. I didn’t vote (I know, shame on me), but I would’ve voted for him if I did, so whatever. We’re good.

VHS action. I hooked up my VCP (yes, video cassette player) in the attic a few days ago. My mom bought it for me when I was probably 13 and it still works. I’ve been digging into some old tapes I have lying around. I have some pretty cool stuff on VHS, I’ve gotta say. What I don't have, unfortunately, is the remote control for it, so in order to control it you have to actually get up and push buttons. What is this, the paleolithic era?

Wednesday morning jams. Minutemen, X, Dead Milkmen, Fear, the Kinks, McRad.

Cool stuff. Honey Nut Cheerios, back-issues of Juice Magazine, bouncing Jane to sleep, awesome soup, Powell Ripper, old footage, snoozing with Henry.

Five things. Usually, coming up with five things a day is a breeze. Some days I get stuck on the fifth one for awhile, and today is one of those days. Sorry if you feel cheated.

Tuesday, March 5, 2013

march fifth

Five for March 5th:

Breakfast. 4-cheese egg soufflé and an asiago bagel from Bread Co on the way in to work. Had to happen, or hangriness would surely have prevailed. I barely ever go there these days. Sometimes forget how much I like their coffee, too.

Skateboarding. Super fun and mellow session at Ramp Riders with my brother last night. It’s weird not being there with Andy, though. Starting to get excited to skate over on the Hill more when the weather starts getting better. My short-term goal for this spring is to start hitting that floodwall. Fun.

Jane. A bit of a rough night last night. Teething-related? Rice cereal-related? Who knows. Is there really a way to figure these things out? Doubtful. We’ve had worse, though. While we’re on the subject, she turns five months next week!

Cool stuff. Box full of vintage Garbage Pail Kids, A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica, leftover pasta, catching up with old friends, five days til’ daylight savings.

Dead malls. As you undoubtedly know by now, I'm a bit obsessive about the phenomenon of the dead mall. However, I didn't know about this one- the world's largest. While not technically (at least in my eyes) a "dead mall", it's getting there.

Monday, March 4, 2013

march fourth

Five for March 4th:

Janey milestones. She’s growing up before our very eyes. This weekend she made some serious strides towards standing up in her exersaucer, and also started on some spoon-fed solid foods (well, rice cereal). She also has a couple of bottom teeth we can see starting to come in.

Weekend highlights. My first-ever north county fish fry, KKF’s sold out record release show at Off Broadway, a walk with Henry on the first sunny day in a week, drinks with Mary and Keith at Civil Life, and perhaps the best episode of Walking Dead yet. Another one that blew by way too fast.

Almost spring. I know this has been somewhat of a recurring theme lately, but whatever. I’m stoked for it. Not saying we’re out of the woods completely, but by this Friday the temperature is supposed to be up to around 60, and of course on Sunday, daylight savings starts. Who knows? May even try to ride in on Friday if it seems doable.

Cool stuff. Custom-engraved guitar capo from a vendor at work, new watch, Jim Thiebaud SMA reissue preorder, short skate session on the Hill banks, EP mixes this week, blueberry/graham cracker frozen yogurt, Civil Life brown ale.

Monday night skating. Andy hurt his ankle pretty bad on Saturday night, so our normal Monday night Ramp Riders skate sessions will be on hold for at least a month while he heals up. May still hit it tonight with my brother though. Total bummer.

Friday, March 1, 2013

march first

Five for March 1st:

March. Made it through the dreaded month of February relatively unscathed, and though March is traditionally the gateway to spring, it sure doesn’t look like it today. More snow. Oh well. The sun will be shining soon enough. We're getting closer by the day.

Kinks tribute night. Excited to announce we’ll be playing the next installment of the KDHX tribute night/benefit on Saturday, March 30th. It’s all Kinks, all night. We’ll be doing four songs. Ten bands, ten bucks. It’ll be a party, and all proceeds benefit KDHX, so it’s for a good cause. Come on out.

Long night. Last night was probably the worst night we’ve had in months. Jane was wide-awake from about 2:30 to 5 am when I finally got her back to sleep after multiple shifts of Lisa and I going in and trying to get her down. Don’t know what the deal was, but ugh.

Cool stuff. New issue of Thrasher in the mail, getting the ball rolling on the EP, impending lunch at Chubbies, free Adolescents poster, vintage Nude Bowl skate footage, vanilla lattes.

Weekend. Mellow one on the way. Aside from a north county fish fry tonight and trying to make Kentucky Knife Fight’s album release show tomorrow, no real solid plans. Hanging out with Lisa and Jane? For sure. Skating? Eh, maybe. Whatever else remains to be seen.
