april thirtieth

Five for April 30:

Riding redux. First back-to-back riding days so far this year. This morning was without doubt the nicest for a ride yet- warm and sunny, no need for the usual hoodie to battle the morning chill.

Sleeping in. One for the record books: Jane slept all night. As in, she didn’t wake up between 9:30 and 6 am. For the first time ever. This may not sound like a huge deal, but trust me, it is. I know it can’t (and won’t) last, but I’m happy to take what I can get.

Vegetable garden. By the end of the week, we’ll be growing our own veggies in the backyard. Plans include broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, and more. Between this Nicole and Eric’s chickens living next door, we should be good to go.

Cool stuff. Dinner at Onesto (plus leftover pizza for lunch), skate session with Josh at JB tonight, post-ride cold showers, Garage Days, beer snobbery, SkateOne spring catalog.

EP progress. Production master is on the way, digital files and sleeve templates are in hand, and artwork is almost complete. Looks like we’re on pace for June 15. Whew.

april twenty-ninth

Five for April 29th:

Riding in. The sun is finally out for a few days following another bleak, cold, rainy, dreary weekend. Needless to say, I took advantage of it with a ride in to work. It was a good one, and the ride home should be even better. Planning on doing it again tomorrow.

Family photos. We managed to pull off a photo shoot in Clifton Heights Park, despite the uncomfortably cool weather. I think we got some good ones. Can’t wait to see them. We should have them on Thursday.

Lo-Fi Cherokee. The Lo-Fi Cherokee 2013 video release party is May 17th at Blank Space. Come out and see some local rock masterpieces, and also our video.

Cool stuff. CSFU full video on Youtube, framing and tilling our soon-to-be vegetable garden, Janey and friends, hanging out with Mary and Keith, fiery scrambles at Southwest Diner.

Travel plans. Lake of the Ozarks and Florida with Lisa’s family this summer, Memphis weekender with Mary and Keith, May trip to Springfield with the band.

april twenty-sixth

Five for April 26th:

Last night. It was a good one: great bike ride home in awesome weather followed up by dinner and drinks at Bottleworks with Lisa and Jane for Dine Out For Life. Even managed to get a near-full night’s sleep afterward.

Skate videos. An amazing, and as always, very artfully done new Killian Martin video India Within, 7 Seconds at Svitak’s featuring the inimitable Bill Danforth and Dave Hackett. All hail the Internet.

Brown-bagging. Brought in lunch every day this week- and ate it- without slipping once. This is not an easy feat to accomplish with Mi Ranchito, Chubbies, La Pizza, and a whole slew of other restaurants mere minutes away.

Cool stuff. Two-for-one Tribute Blend Vias at Starbucks(!), Black Sabbath Mob Rules on Spotify, good doctor visit for Jane, powerslides.

Friday. Finally. Barbecuing, snapping some family pictures, seeing a band or two, hanging out with friends, mowing the lawn, dog-partying, skating, hot tubbing, and coffee drinking are all on the agenda, although I may not get to all of them.

Thursday, April 25, 2013

april twenty-fifth

Five for April 25th:

Bikes. A quick, brisk six-mile ride in this morning. A little chilly, but you get over that pretty quickly once your blood starts flowing. Nothing a pair of full-fingered gloves can’t handle. The ride home should be about 60 and sunny, which is just about perfect.

Family pictures. We’re taking some actual professional family photos this weekend, for the first time ever. After camera-phoning anything and everything that past few months, it’ll be cool to get some quality pictures taken.

Skateboarding. Being as I was in South County to meet up with Josh, I managed to squeeze in about fifteen minutes at JB last night before the sun went down. Every little bit counts these days. I can’t wait to start getting back there with some regularity.

Cool stuff. Electric Frankenstein on Spotify, couscous, Santa Cruz Jason Jessee V8 and new Real 8.25, Flag Redondo Beach show footage, DIY garage ramps.

Jane. Going to the doctor today for her six-month checkup and, much worse, her six-month shots. Hopefully it doesn’t put her in too bad a mood for the rest of the day. We shall see. That said, she’s fully ready for spring.

april twenty-fourth

Five for April 24th:

Homemade BBQ sauce. We put Denise’s jar of the aforementioned condiment to its inaugural use last night on some turkey meatloaf. The verdict? Awesome.

37 degrees out. Seriously, in my entire lifetime, I can’t recall winter weather ever dragging out this long into spring. This is getting absurd. It’s almost May.

Jury duty. Lisa has it today, after luckily being able to put it off for a few months while getting through pregnancy and maternity leave. I don’t envy her, but I have a feeling I’m not too far off from my next call to action.

Cool stuff. Getting some new decks (plus hitting up JB), weekend wine haul, skate picks, late May Springfield show with the ACBs, Patton Oswalt stand-up on Netflix.

Facebook. For the first time ever in the history of my own personal iPhone ownership, Facebook has rolled out an app upgrade that is an actual, legitimate, functional upgrade. The last version was so terrible I almost deleted it outright. Well done.

april twenty-third

Five for April 23rd:

The Hobbit. Finally got a chance to see it over the weekend. Definitely a great movie, although some parts and characters were a little too cartoony-feeling for my taste, especially given the overall tone of the LOTR trilogy. That’s a minor complaint, though. Definitely stoked to see the next one.

Bike commuting. Really good ride yesterday, but the trip home was a brutal, uphill fight against punishing winds. But hey, it was good exercise, and it was cool riding with Tom for part of the way. Planning on hitting it again Thursday and Friday this week, weather permitting.

Skating. Despite my sore legs, managed to squeeze a quick and impromptu ten-minute or so roll-around on the Hill yesterday evening. Better than nothing, I guess. Having a setup in the car pays off.

Cool stuff. Two good nights with Jane, unseen episodes of 30 Rock, new videos from Cliché’, Transworld, and Deathwish, turkey burgers, window repair, potential Iron Maiden album next year.

Police State. Boston tried one, and it failed. This article is a must-read for anyone that values their quickly fading personal freedoms.

Monday, April 22, 2013

april twenty-second

Five for April 22nd:

Happy anniversary. Our one-year anniversary was yesterday. Hard to believe a year has passed already. Best year ever? No doubt about it. Love you, Lisa!

Hermann. We celebrated our anniversary weekend in Missouri wine country. It was my first time ever in Hermann. We tasted wines, walked all over the place, ate a ton of great food, stayed at a mansion, and slept in for the first time in six plus months. It was amazing.

New season, new shorts. I buy one pair of shorts at the beginning of each spring. They’re typically threadbare by the end of the summer due to a combination of near-constant bike riding, skating, and just general use outdoors in sweltering temperatures. Last year’s shorts ripped on Saturday, right on schedule.

Cool stuff. New issue of The Skateboard Mag, cheese and summer sausage, EP progression, killing weeds, February eBay Watch, The Hobbit, my band on STLtoday's Loufest Wish List.

Riding in. Finally got to ride my bike to work this morning after a week of nasty weather and, more importantly, a weekend of eating like absolute crap. Good ride, a lot easier than last time for whatever reason. Hoping to get at least one or two more in this week. Double bonus: today is Earth Day.

Friday, April 19, 2013

april nineteenth

Five for April 19th:

This week sucked. Despite my best attempts at maintaining an optimistic outlook, this week has been a rough one- little sleep, no skating, no band practice, cold temperatures and nearly nonstop rain. That’s to say nothing of the rest of the insane crap happening in this country. I’m ready for a fun and drastically different weekend.

Fugazi. It’s a “complete discography” sort of day, starting with 13 Songs, ending with Repeater, and, as always, likely skipping Instrument Soundtrack entirely.

Santa Cruz. Man, they’re putting out some killer stuff these days. Need proof? Check out their spring catalog. Slime Balls reissues, tons of classic graphics and awesome new ones, just packed with rad. I can’t wait to ride that Jason Jessee V8!

Cool stuff. Homemade hot sauce from Denise, Ride Channel on Youtube, Record Store Day, Jazz apples, getting paid, hanging out with Jane, Jake Brown ollie 720.

Weekend. Celebrating one year of marriage, wine country, mansion-crashing, getting some sleep, eating some food, hanging with family, skating if I get a chance. The weather next week looks to be much better, so hopefully it'll be back on the bike.

Thursday, April 18, 2013

april eighteenth

Five for April 18th:

State of the album. Our upcoming five-song EP is going to mastering today, and we should have the finished product ready to send off soon. Glad to see this project finally approaching the finish line. June 15th at Off Broadway, come get one!

April showers. Hopefully they will indeed bring some May flowers. And some sunshine. And some decent weather. And some small semblance of the fact that it’s- *gasp*- spring.

Sleep. I don’t know what time I crashed on the couch last night, but I completely passed out once Jane went to bed and actually managed to get some decent sleep despite falling out early, bouncing Jane a few times, and the muggy temperatures.

Cool stuff. KHVT gets a shout-out on Skate and Annoy, homemade pizza, Haro BMX videos, having deodorant at work, basement dehumidification.

Patton Oswalt. Did you really need another reason to love Patton Oswalt this week? His unedited Star Wars ramble outtake from Parks & Rec is one of the funniest and most impressive things I’ve ever seen. How any of the extras in the background managed to keep a straight face through this is beyond me. I would’ve been on the floor.

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

april seventeenth

Five for April 17th:

Iron Maiden. Can’t wait to see them on September 8th with Steve and Eve. Very rarely do I get super excited about shows- there are some I certainly look forward to, of course, but hardly any I’m legitimately excited about. This is one of them.

Red Sea Requirements. Many years ago, the notoriously shady and clueless promoter at a horrible (and now defunct) basement venue called the Red Sea published an insane list of rules and regulations he and his team had written for playing there. Luckily- not to toot my own horn- I saved the whole thing, and yesterday I put it online for the world to see and appreciate. You’re welcome.

Day in the life. Been digging into the old 411VM day in the life video segments on Youtube. Really entertaining. Also cool to go back and check out: old SK8 TV episodes.

Cool stuff. Blues win in overtime, Anonymous doing what they do, taco night, Janey says relax, Tecate, possible Thursday night skating in lieu of band practice, Golobulus.

Wednesday morning musical selections. Jawbox, Drive Like Jehu, Samhain, Led Zeppelin.

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

april sixteenth

Five for April 16th:

Last night. Had to call off the Monday evening skate session due to lack of sleep Sunday night catching up to me, which was a bummer, but at the end of the day it was probably the right move. We’ll get back to it soon. The good news is that Jane only woke us once last night.

Defiance. Caught a bit of the first episode yesterday. It’s a new sci-fi show set in a weird, post-alien-invasion St. Louis, so naturally I’m interested in it. The little bit I saw was pretty cool, but probably won’t be investing in watching it regularly.

Boston. Hope any and all friends in and around the greater Boston area are OK. This world we live in really bums me out sometimes.

Cool stuff. More free Tribute Blend Vias from Starbucks, new Urban Chestnut opening in the Grove, KHVT fundraising campaign, Jason Jessee V8 deck on order, bocce season at Milo’s begins tonight, Springtime With Goodfield.

Allergies. The last week or so has been terrible, with this past Saturday and Sunday being the apex of the worst of it. Thankfully, it looks like it's all behind me, and my nostrils are starting to normalize. I was honestly beginning to think it wasn’t going to end.

Monday, April 15, 2013

april fifteenth

Five for April 15th:

No riding. Looks like I spoke too soon on riding season- the weather has been either rainy, or cold, or both pretty much every (work) day since then. Are we ever going to turn the corner? This has been the longest non-spring spring ever.

Lo-Fi Cherokee. Awesome time on Saturday. The video shoot went great- much better than I was expecting, with tons of people showing up to sing and clap along, and the after-party at Foam was a fun and friend-filled dance party. Such a great event- congrats to Bill for pulling it off. Can’t wait to see the video.

Yard work. Took advantage of the amazing weather (and Rick’s pickup truck) yesterday and got a ton of lawn-care stuff done, including re-mulching the garden and the beds in front, weeding, and mowing. Jane supervised.

Cool stuff. Iron Maiden tickets have been purchased (thanks Steve!), Fiery Scramble at Southwest Diner, new lawn furniture, Black Label classic graphics on updated shapes, EP cover designs, old man skate session at Ramp Riders tonight.

Tax day. There was a time not long ago where I would be completing my taxes on this day, even though generally speaking I’m not much of a procrastinator. Things have changed, thankfully, and we’ve had our taxes done for two months now. A new record.

Friday, April 12, 2013

april twelfth

Five for April 12th:

Six months. Jane turns six months old today. While every month has been a milestone, six months just seems like a bigger deal. Half a year, and it shows. She’s really growing fast. To celebrate, she slept for almost twelve uninterrupted hours last night. Thanks, baby.

Rocking. Great practice last night. The song for Lo-Fi Cherokee really came together, which is a relief. We changed some things around and I think it’ll be awesome. The regular set sounded great as well. Saturday night should be fun, come on down.

Free lunch. We have a meeting today during lunch, and they’re bringing in Mi Ranchito. Normally the thought of having to stick around here during lunch makes my skin crawl, and the fare is usually cold pizza- but free Ranchito is something I can get behind.

Cool stuff. Lo-Fi article on STLToday, Skateboarding Photo web mag, Starbucks chocolate chip cookies, wearing shorts, new issue of TWS, Off! on Spotify.

Weekend. And here we are. Taking it easy tonight. Busy one tomorrow: visit from mom in the morning, late lunch in Forest Park at the boathouse, then shooting a music video and playing a rock show. Purchasing Iron Maiden tickets and hopefully skating for a bit on Sunday. Rinse and repeat.

Thursday, April 11, 2013

april eleventh

Five for April 11th:

Sitting tall. She’s not 100% there yet, balance-wise, but as of yesterday Jane can pretty much sit up by herself. Well, she can’t really sit up by herself, but she can stay seated if someone sits her down, if that makes sense. Another thing she couldn’t do 24 hours ago that out of the blue she can now do. And tomorrow she turns six months old!

Stormy weather. Looks like we escaped last night’s tornado-force weather unscathed, except for our basement, which is wet as usual. Nothing a dehumidifier, a push broom, and a sump pump can’t handle. And as a bonus, our sweltering upstairs is now nice and cooled-down.

Band practice. We have a live video to film and a full set to play on Saturday for the Lo-Fi Cherokee video shoot and after-party, respectively. Hence, we have some stuff to work on tonight. Should be a good one.

Cool stuff. Dirt’s Living Room video (I want that living room), board games, pizza delivery, Newcastle Brown Ale, Descendents’ Hallraker Live on Spotify, Henry and Jane in bed in the mornings.

Anniversary. Hard to believe it’s coming up on a year ago already that Lisa and I tied the knot. We’ll be celebrating the occasion with a night of uninterrupted sleep in a mansion, which these days is something I can't really even fathom. Can't wait.

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

april tenth

Five for April 10th:

RFT Music Awards. My band has been nominated for “Best Pop Band” in the 2013 RFT Music Awards along with four other great bands. Super awesome. Vote here! Showcase info coming soon. Thanks to everyone who put our name in the hat!

Fireball Island. Still the best board game ever. Broke it out yesterday for two epic games with Lisa, both of which she won. I’ll chalk that up to beginner’s luck. The best part, though, was rediscovering the vintage Venture baggie that I’ve had the game pieces stored in for fifteen+ years. The last one in existence?

Restless night. Jane had a rough one last night. I personally went in about seven times to bounce her back to sleep from the time we put her to bed till about four am, and I don’t even know how much Lisa was in there. Our theory is her room was too hot, which is quite possible. Needless to say, today I’m running on caffeine.

Cool stuff. Evening walks with the family, chicken & veggie kabobs, American Restoration, Elephant Skateboards Trajectory video.

Hillary Clinton editorial. This Onion article is funny enough by itself, but made funnier because there’s pretty much no doubt that this is exactly what’s going through her mind. Another home run.

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

april ninth

Five for April 9th:

Skateboarding. Monday night mini ramp session at Ramp Riders with Josh was good times, despite the bordering-on-oppressive heat. Bonus: next Monday is old man night, which means we skate free!

Deadbeat sellers. For the first time ever, I actually have to deal with a deadbeat seller on eBay, and it’s annoying the hell out of me. If you sell something on eBay with no reserve and you don’t like the price the item ended for, that’s not my problem. Learn how the world works, you jackass.

Hanging out with Jane. She absolutely loves being outdoors now that the weather is nice, and is grabbing anything she can get her hands on, which usually includes tree branches, Henry’s beard, and my nose.

Cool stuff. Jogging stroller $50 Craigslist score, neighborhood in bloom, dark roast coffee from Panera, fresh tube of Carmex, lunch Carnitas from Mi Ranchito, Mr. Crinklewings, unedited Ben Raybourn Burnside footage.

Allergy meds. I cheaped out on some off-brand Benadryl without reading the label and paid the price. Let’s just say it wasn’t kidding when it said “may cause marked drowsiness”- a warning I didn’t see in time. I spent most of Sunday asleep on the couch or stumbling around like a zombie in a fog. Lesson learned.

Monday, April 8, 2013

april eighth

Five for April 8th:

Weekend food. Margherita pizza at Onesto, baked oatmeal with bananas and pecans, sandwiches and salads on the patio at Bottleworks, grilled turkey burgers and sweet potatoes.

CSFU. The new Creature Skateboards DVD kills. I probably watched it three times over the weekend here and there. Super gnarly and varied parts, with tons of vert, street, pool, bank, and even dirt skating. Plus it was free with the newest Thrasher. If you skate and don’t have a Thrasher subscription, you’re selling yourself short.

Jane at the Zoo. We took Jane to Forest Park Saturday afternoon for her first-ever trip to the Zoo, and she loved it. So much fun. She was all about the giraffes and general people-watching, which there was plenty of. Added bonus: zoo food.

Cool stuff. Herm in town, one year wedding anniversary trip is planned, 007: Skyfall, Cardinals home opener, Lo-Fi Cherokee article, Iron Maiden in STL on September 8th.

Lawn care. All of a sudden- as in, overnight- our grass is lush and green, and the weeds are sprouting up everywhere. My old manual push mower could barely hack through it, it had gotten so thick so fast.

Friday, April 5, 2013

april fifth

Five for April 5th:

Bike season is back. Commuted by bike to work today for the first time since before Jane was born. Despite being horrendously out of shape, I managed to make it in a half hour, and that included a stop at the ATM to deposit a check. Sore as hell, and my legs are like jelly, but it feels amazing.

Roger Ebert. Even though I grew up watching “Siskel and Ebert”, I only started really appreciating Roger Ebert as more than a movie critic a few years ago thanks to the wonders of social media. He was one of (very) few celebrity-type people I went out of my way to keep up with. There won’t be another like him.

Practicing. Short and sweet rehearsal last night at Kevin’s place. It was actually sort of weird playing as a three piece again. The song for Lo-Fi Cherokee came together pretty nicely, but it’ll be good to flush it out with Andy in the mix. Also on the band note: show review and photos from the Kinks tribute at Off Broadway. Dig it.

Cool stuff. New issue of Thrasher (with free Creature DVD) in the mail, Mission Taco (good tacos and skateboard art on the walls), Jane wearing her Beatles shirt, green grass, payday, North Korea’s adorable take on the USA.

Weekend action. As opposed to last weekend, which was non-stop and we barely had time to sit down; I have absolutely nothing planned for this weekend. Trip to the zoo with Lisa and Jane? Skate? Ride? Mow the lawn? All possibilities. See you on Monday.

Thursday, April 4, 2013

april fourth

Five for April 4th:

Feeling better. I’m glad to report that it seems like the worst of the allergy issues are behind me. Monday and Tuesday of this week were terrible, yesterday was slightly less crappy, and today is almost back to normal.

Band practice. 3-piece acoustic-y jam (minus Andy) tonight, putting together our song that’ll be taped for Lo-Fi Cherokee next weekend. I have no idea what we’re going to be doing, so hopefully it comes together quickly and without too much headache.

Bike commuting. Riding in to work tomorrow for the first time this year, and maybe the last time for a bit, because next week is looking pretty lousy. Better than nothing, though.

Cool stuff. Checking out Mission Taco, everyone getting sleep, Andrew Cannon “Free Lunch” episode, new issue of Ride BMX magazine, Blue Bunny.

Growing up. Janey turns six months old next week, which I simply cannot believe. By this time next month, she’s going to be crawling: mark my words.

Wednesday, April 3, 2013

april third

Five for April 3rd:

Jane day. Good drive in this morning for the weekly meet up with her Grandma. She’s more and more able to keep herself entertained, and thus is getting better being in the back seat by herself, which is great.

Ass clown of the day. The award goes Mike Rice of Rutgers University. Hope all your baby tantrums were worth your job.

Being busy. Having a lot to do at work is of course a good thing- it makes the day pass by quickly, more money, all that good stuff. However, it also makes doing the daily blog entry more difficult some days. Today is one of them.

Cool stuff. Leinenkugel Canoe Paddler, Maiden England ’88 on Spotify, spring barbecuing, Trader Joe’s Brentwood expansion, Lo-Fi Cherokee video shoot and after party (both of which we’re playing) on April 14th.

Skateboarding. Hoping to get in at least a couple of outdoor sessions over the next few days/weekend, and would really love to get back to Ramp Riders and skate the mini on Monday.

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

april second

Five for April 2nd:

Congestion. I always get a cold/allergy attack when the seasons change, and the transition from winter to spring is usually the worst. This year is no exception, and the dramatic back-and-forth shifts in temperature aren’t helping things.

Hooked up. Went to Starbucks this morning for coffee, and the girl behind the counter (who knows I get a box of Vias every other week or so) handed me a handful of about ten packets of Tribute Blend out of the blue. Day: made.

Riding season. The ten-day forecast is nothing but sixties and seventies with a few sprinkles mixed in here and there. I think my first ride-in of the season is going to be Friday, which I’m super excited for. Ready to be back on my bike.

Cool stuff. La Pizza and back in 40 minutes, hanging out with Jane in the morning, Honey Comb cereal, Black Sabbath “Paranoid: Classic Albums” on Netflix.

April Fools’ Day. It was about one hundred percent more fun before the internet existed, and it was a day of actual jokes and pranks and not just fake web videos. Yawn.

Monday, April 1, 2013

april first

Five for April 1st:

Rock party. Killer show Saturday night. All the bands were awesome, the place was packed, the drinks were cheap, we played great, and much fun was had. I saw about ten people taping/photographing the show, so hopefully some footage will surface soon.

Jane’s first Easter. We celebrated with an amazing (seriously amazing) brunch at Piper Palm House in Tower Grove Park with Lisa’s family, followed by some hanging out in the park and enjoying the amazing weather. The day before we attended an egg hunt in CHP which Jane was slightly less enthusiastic about.

Walking Dead. I don’t watch TV shows with any regularity (in the age of the internet, why bother?), but Walking Dead is the exception, and it hasn’t disappointed. Season three has ruled, and I can’t wait to see where they take it next. Big public thanks to Lisa for always being the one to handle Jane in that hour, if needed. That’s love.

Cool stuff. The month of April, Vine app for iPhone, quick session on the Union Banks, Easter candy, Cardinals season opener, Henry at Spotlight video, Advil Cold & Sinus.

La Pizza. After a months-long hiatus, it’s happening in mere hours.
