july thirty-first

Five for July 31st:

July. Summer is too damned short. June and July are generally my favorite months of the year, and I have to admit, I’m a little bummed to see them already over with- especially given the epic weather we’ve had over the last week or so. You’ll never have another July 2013. Hope you enjoyed it.

Black Label. Their new line of OG John Lucero “bars” decks owns. New shapes, classic graphic, and beautiful stains. That teal one definitely has my name on it. Black Label is, in my mind, the most consistently awesome skate company out there.

Justice. The right call for Bradley Manning (convicting him of aiding the enemy would set a very dangerous course for this country), a good start for Daniel Chong (although not nearly good enough- the people behind this need to be imprisoned).

Cool stuff. Coffee restock, lining up some fall shows, promising Thursday and Friday riding weather, mornings with Jane, Boar’s Head blackened turkey, ghetto garlic bread.

Autocorrected. My iPhone has throw out some amazingly insane autocorrects in its day, but I think last night’s correction of “shrinkwrapped” to “shrine raped” has officially taken the number one slot.

july thirtieth

Five for July 30th:

Sore morning. A twelve-mile bike commute followed by a couple of hours of mini-ramp skating in the evening have take their toll on me today. However, it’s hard to complain about being sore from a bunch of exercise.

Coffee fail. Used up the last of our coffee at home yesterday morning, and despite thinking, “don’t forget to get coffee” all day, I completely failed to do so. Had to make a 6:30 am run to Hardees in the rain to pick up a couple of emergency cups. You’d think I’d be more on top of things like this.

Janey. She’s a little ball of endless energy. She’s crawling all over the place, getting into everything, pulling herself up onto things constantly, and laughing at jokes she doesn’t understand. It’s awesome. She’ll be walking in a month, mark my words.

Cool stuff. New Cerebral Ballzy track, fresh pack of Vias for the workplace, Gleaming The Cube on Youtube, Pizzanista’s pizza deck, best tattoo cover-up ever.

Tuesday tuneage. Buffalo Killers, McRad, Eagles, Afghan Whigs, Giant Drag, Bedouin Soundclash, Thin Lizzy.

july twenty-ninth

Five for July 29th:

Modesto. One of our favorite restaurants in St. Louis for many years now. Always a different menu every time we go there, and the food is amazing. Try the Tocino con Pina.

Fall in July. I’ve never in my life experienced weather like this in the middle of summer. Balmy and breezy with a high of 75 in July in St. Louis is unheard of. AC is off, and it got so cool at night we actually had to close a few windows. Insane. I’ll take it.

Day 1. Going for at least 3/5 days this week. Kicked it off this morning with a verging-on-chilly commute in after three days off the bike. Feels good to get the blood flowing. Tomorrow is supposed to be a rain-out, and Wednesday isn’t happening as usual, so gotta get while the gettin’ is good.

Cool stuff. Hanging out with Rebecca and Oliver at Tower Grove Park, Rat Bones wheels, backyard plans, Filmage review (can't wait to see it), Ramp Riders session with Andy tonight, Kevin Staab bootlegs.

Survival sickness. I had a bit of a health scare yesterday, which luckily turned out to be nothing at all, but wasn’t without a moment or two of scariness. Call or email me if you want the details, but again, all’s well, so fret not.

july twenty-sixth

Five for July 26th:

Oozing creativity. Great practice last night. As has been the case lately, we closed the evening with another new tune in the hopper. It’s crazy- we have never in history been on a creative streak like we’re on now. Hopefully we can keep the momentum up and get in the studio soon.

2/5. A full day of on-and-off threatening rain and the need to run some errands at lunch squashed my riding plans for the day. Two out of five will have to do for the week. Not totally pleased, but also not a complete failure.

Toy shows. What was once a regularity is now a rarity. These days, if I get to one toy show a year it’s an achievement. I’ve been jonesing to get back lately. More than anything, I need to go there as a seller rather than a buyer. Lord knows I have enough inventory. Next one is in September. Time to start planning.

Cool stuff. Vans/Haro Freestler giveaway, egg soufflé and asiago bagel from Bread Co, gettin' paid, Maniac Mansion, the Faction on Spotify, Manhattan in the Grand Canyon photo project.

Weekend action. Plans include a much-needed date with Lisa to Modesto for tapas and sangria, possible show-going at Heavy Anchor, skating with Andy, swimming with Janey, hot-tubbing, BMX riding, and generally enjoying the unseasonably mild weather. See you Monday.

july twenty-fifth

Five for July 25th:

Outbid by $1. I was this close to winning a vintage black Ban This Caballero deck with the green dragon for super cheap yesterday, and was outbid by one miserable dollar. It stings- but, in reality, it was probably for the best.

Day 2. This weather is unreal. My ride in this morning was actually bordering on chilly. I can’t even believe this is July in St. Louis. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Loop 1-2-3. It’s a bit played out (in that I’ve done it seemingly hundreds of times), but hitting up the Avalon Exchange/ Star Clipper/ Vintage Vinyl combo is a great way to kill time in the afternoons. Working so close to Delmar is definitely a bonus.

Cool stuff. The Stage at KDHX got funded with a day to spare, solid month of good-night’s-sleep, bike shortcuts, hanging out with my girl, Chin Ramp construction footage, World Record still in the top 15.

Scraping the bottom. PB&J, some tortilla chip crumbs, and a bruised apple for lunch. I think it’s time to go to the store.

july twenty-fourth

Five for July 24th:

On the move. I’m calling it: as of today, Jane is *officially* a crawler. She has been almost a crawler for some time, but still preferred doing the army shuffle on her belly to get around. This morning, first thing, she got on her hands and knees and took off across the room to get to her basket of toys. So, that’s it. We have a crawler.

Weather report. I did a double take when I left the house this morning: it was about 65 degrees, sunny and breezy. In other words, perfect. Kicking myself for not being able to ride in and take advantage of it, but that’s Wednesday for you. At least I got to drive with the windows open and the AC off.

Hoggle lives. How did this story slip by me? The actual Hoggle character from Labyrinth was apparently found in some abandoned crate in an unclaimed baggage warehouse a couple of years ago. Maybe it’s because I grew up watching Labyrinth regularly, I don’t know- but this absolutely blows my mind. Long live Hoggle.

Cool stuff. Gevalia Traditional Roast coffee, Pageant show is a month out, Physical Graffiti on vinyl, 2012 Skateone picnic graphic by VJC, The Man Who Souled The World full documentary.

Auction bummer. There are few things more depressing than watching eBay auctions you thought were going to go under the radar skyrocket during their last hours. Unless, of course, you’re the seller, in which case it's phenomenal.

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

july twenty-third

Five for July 23rd:

Bike commute. Back on the saddle for a ride in to work this morning. Glad I took yesterday to relax my back. Of course, tomorrow is out as always, but I’m planning on Thursday and Friday as long as the weather cooperates. This summer has been amazing for bike riding.

Gmail FTW. It’s rare that I praise automated updates from services I use, as most of the time they’re not very good- but Gmail’s new Primary/Social/Promotions auto-sort feature is absolutely perfect. I’m floored, actually, by how flawless it works and how useful it is. Well done.

Haro BMX geek-out. Bob Haro One Bike, One rider documentary on Vimeo, Ryan Nyquist introduces the new Lineage frame (which is just completely awesome), and the Freestyler Vans are out now and on my must-have list. All of this combined with my recently built ’87 FST is putting me in full-on nerd mode.

Cool stuff. Taking Jane to see the ducks, greatest surf trick ever, X-Files, leftover spaghetti, Big House Red in a box.

Tuesday tuneage. Greenhornes, New Pornographers, Black Lips, Rainbow, J Church, Tom Petty, Gorilla Biscuits, Zeke.

Monday, July 22, 2013

july twenty-second

Five for July 22nd:

Monday. Sore back from doing tons of yard work yesterday and an early meeting this morning. Skipped the ride and popped a few Ibuprofen to try to get back up to snuff. Caffeine will have to do the rest.

Skateboarding. Fun, but sweltering Saturday session with friends at JB. The sun was so punishing that trips to sit under a tree in the shade were happening every few minutes. It wrecked me for the rest of the day, but was totally worth it.

The old neighborhood. Took a quick drive/stroll around Shenandoah before having brunch with my mom and brother on Sunday. It’s crazy how much it has changed. Small things, like intersections now paved in brick to huge things like an entire subdivision occupying what was literally a cow field when I was a kid. The school grounds appear to really be going downhill too, but in fairness it’s summer and probably not being kept up like it normally would. Being there is weirdly surreal.

Cool stuff. Jane is now a baby tornado, Homemade pizza, Star Wars IV bloopers (sorta), vintage (1989) issue of TWS on loan from Andy, Red Dead revisited, Monday meeting notes, Vash the Stampede.

iPhone troubles. After working well for a day and a half or so, my iPhone is back to doing all the same crap it was before. Going to try to stretch replacing it out until Friday (which happens to coincide with payday), but I just can’t be without a reliable phone. It’s always something.

Friday, July 19, 2013

july nineteenth

Five for July 19th:

No ride, again. After-work obligations and the need to bring home packing materials for stuff I’m selling on eBay put the kibosh on riding in to work today. Bummer, but what can you do? Back at it next week.

SOHA. First time there last night. Awesomely huge beer selection and the food was great. The fact that it’s a five-minute walk from our house makes it even more appealing.

Practice. We have a whole slew of new songs in various stages of done-ness, and we've basically been dedicating practices to tightening them up and revising parts we’re not entirely happy with or were just thrown in as filler. Ideas are flowing and everything is really coming together nicely.

Cool stuff. Photos of NYC in 1969, iced coffee to-go, Jane on the move, Live After Death on Spotify, vending machine donuts, Radical Rick lives.

Weekend action. Friday already! This week blasted by. No real set plans for the weekend: some skating, some swimming, some hanging out with family in town, and some necessary lawn work are all in the “highly probable to definitely happening” category.

Thursday, July 18, 2013

july eighteenth

Five for July 18th:

Day 2. Finally got another ride in this week, and it was a quick and fun one, as they all are. Some construction detours on Skinker and Ferguson made the ride a little more interesting than usual.

Finances. Going to be experimenting with some reverse engineering (of sorts) as far as our bills are concerned: how we pay them, where money is going, etc. With Jane starting day care a couple of days a week in October, it’s a necessity. I think it’s going to be a winner.

FU WBC. The Church of Satan is now performing gay marriages at Westboro Baptist Church leader Fred Phelps’ mother’s gravesite. That might be the most amazing sentence I’ve ever written.

Cool stuff. Kingshighway DIY in the new Thrasher Skate Rock episode, band practice tonight, lunchboarding in the Loop, smoked almonds, Henry is back to 100%, cheap multi-tool saves the day.

Thursday tunes. Bad Religion, Motorhead, Libertines, Off!, Descendents, Deep Purple.

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

july seventeenth

Five for July 17th:

No ride. After two weeks off, I completely forgot that Wednesday is my day to drop Jane off in the morning and pick her up in the evening, so I had to bail on my plans to ride today. Hopefully I’ll get tomorrow and Friday in for a solid 3/5.

Higher education. Speaking of Jane, we were able to get her into what is more our less our dream daycare center starting in October! Huge relief, to say the least. Close proximity to my work, too, which is an added bonus.

Rolling Stone. No one should be shocked by this. As print media continues its downward spiral toward total irrelevancy, you will see more and more of this type of thing. Of course it's easy to get offended by this; that is exactly what they're banking on. Buzz is created, people will go to the site to profess their outrage, pageviews will go up, advertisers will be happy, and magazines will sell. Behold the future. Get used to it.

Cool stuff. 3-pack of iPhone USB cables in the mail, peanut butter and banana sandwiches, amazing photos of Leeds in the 70’s, 55 mm Satori wheels, breaking in the new shoes.

STL Music scene. It was done proud last night on a national level- Pokey LaFarge on David Letterman and Nelly on Jay Leno. Pretty cool if you ask me. Represent!

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

july sixteenth

Five for July 16th:

Day 1. Great ride in this morning. Fully equipped with a bottle of iced Starbucks coffee, most of which was gone by the time the ride ended. Speaking of bikes, I saw this guy on my way home yesterday, literally about 30 seconds from hitting one of the gnarliest uphill climbs in STL. I almost wanted to tail him to see if he could actually make it.

iPhone antics. I’ve been having all sorts of issues with it losing wireless signal, dropping calls, and just generally running sluggishly. Took it to the Apple store last night and after some software updating and test-running, it appears to be working well again. Knock on wood.

Next show. Excited to announce our next show will be at the Pageant on August 23rd with Sleepy Kitty (celebrating their new LP release) and The Incurables (featuring guests from El Monstero and more). Much more news on this show coming soon. RSVP here. Only ten bucks!

Cool stuff. New pair of Adidas Dennis Busenitz Vulcs (practically free with some gift cards I got at work), white Bones sunglasses, new issue of The Skateboard Mag, walks with the family, dark chocolate.

On the move. Jane crawled- legitimately crawled on her hands and knees- for the first time last night. She’s still perfecting it and a little skittish about it, but it was a major step. Luckily Lisa and I were both there to see it. Awesome moment.

Monday, July 15, 2013

july fifteenth

Five for July 15th:

Car crap. Saturday started off fine, but turned into a solid morning of car-related headachery. Came out of the house to a flat tire. Put on the spare in the hot sun, and took it to Dobbs. Apparently it had a screw in it. Luckily they could patch it. Then I went and sat in a twenty-minute line at Valvoline to get an emissions inspection so I can renew my plates. Thankfully the whole ordeal only ended up costing me about $50, but still: being an adult blows sometimes.

Janey. At nine months, she’s developing a personality that shines through more and more every day. Not to mention a little attitude. She seriously cracks me up.

To-do list. It’s a long one this week on top of the normal grind. Everything from ordering checks to scheduling an appointment at the Apple store to packing up toys I’m selling on eBay.

Cool stuff. Skating mini-ramp with Andy and Bryan, Cardinals rally to win, drinks with Scott at Bottleworks, four-wheeling on Lisa’s dad’s farm, backyard is back up to snuff, free cookies at work, NY Ink, Pizza on the patio at Onesto.

Riding. Lingering threats of storms all day forced a drive in to work, but the rest of the week is looking clear and rain-free. Shooting for the next four, despite the swift and brutal return of summer heat and mugginess.

Friday, July 12, 2013

july twelfth

Five for July 12th:

Jane at nine months. NINE MONTHS? If I’m doing my math correctly- and I think I am- that means she’s three months shy of being a year old, which is absolutely crazy. We were running a bit behind this AM, so official photos will be coming tonight. Get ready.

No ride. Last night I developed a splitting headache at practice, which was still lingering around this morning. That, combined with a few errands I had to run before work, meant no riding in today. I probably could have done it, but I didn’t want to push my luck. I’m bummed because it’s beautiful out, but it is what it is. Back at it next week with a vengeance.

Friday jams. The Vapors, Electric Frankenstein, Hot Snakes, Jawbox, Temptations, Reigning Sound, DEVO, Splatcats.

Cool stuff. Getting paid, pumpkin bread from Starbucks, tightening up a new song, listing more stuff on eBay, new sunglasses, Henry Rollins’ 20 Favorite Punk Albums, early morning parking lot skate cruising, Natas Kaupas interview.

Weekend action. Pretty mellow one coming up. BBQ out at Lisa’s Dad’s farm, skateboarding, getting an emissions inspection, mowing the back yard, and generally kicking it with Lisa and Janey.

Thursday, July 11, 2013

july eleventh

Five for July 11th:

Back pedaling. Had to skip yesterday as the morning was wet and stormy, but today was as beautiful a summer ride as you could ask for. Mid 70’s and sunny. Felt great to be on the bike again after more than a week off. A little sorer than usual, but that’s to be expected.

GTA V. Rockstar released the gameplay trailer yesterday and it is absolutely stunning. I really didn’t know how they could ever top IV, but it looks like the completely blew it out of the water in every respect. The proof, however, will be in the pudding.

Band practice. Happening tonight. Next show isn’t until late August (more on that one soon), so we’ll probably be tightening up newer tunes and working on writing. We’ve been on a real tear lately, with nine new songs in various stages of completion. All of them sound good. Hopefully we can get them wrapped up soon.

Cool stuff. Crock-Pot chicken tacos, awesome Lance Mountain interview, getting the lawn mowed, fresh fruit, uber-modern garden shed offices.

Henry. Our little dude is feeling better after a few days of throwing up and midnight trips to the backyard to relieve himself. The vet thinks he got into something while we were out of town, but didn’t seem to think it was anything to worry about. An anti-nausea shot, some antibiotics, and some light food seem to be doing the trick. Very relieved.

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

july tenth

Five for July 10th:

Vacation. Spent the last seven days on the Gulf Coast of Florida with Lisa, Janey, and family. Went to a bunch of different beaches, ate tons of great food, swam every day, and just generally relaxed. Lisa’s uncle Roger’s house came complete with a lanai and an outdoor shower. I didn’t shower indoors once the entire time I was there. It was awesome and much-needed.

Playing catch-up. This morning has been- and continues to be- a coffee-fueled blur of trying to get caught up on e-mails, random work stuff, internet-happenings, writing this blog update and readjusting to reality. I fully expect this to continue on into this evening as we try to get things settled around the house.

Rock band. Came back to some cool band-related stuff: After only a month of being out, World Record is #7 in spins for the year on KDHX (!), and made quite a few DJ top-ten lists. The EP also got a really nice review in the new Eleven magazine, which is available in print all over the place, so go check it out.

Cool stuff. New issues of Thrasher, Transworld Skateboarding, and Ride BMX in the mail, cherry tomatoes from our garden, blank deck and a bunch of skate parts from my brother (along with a free humidifier), Landshark parking block contest footage, spending seven uninterrupted days with Jane.

Flying. If you’re already of the opinion that dealing with airports, check-ins, seating, security, and all the pains-in-the-asses that come with air travel are stressful, try doing it with a squirming, loud, and energetic nine month old in your arms.

Monday, July 1, 2013

july first

Five for July 1st:

July. It’s the middle of summer, and it was sixty-some degrees this morning. What’s happening? As a side note, I can’t believe this year is already halfway over.

Crisis averted. Long story short: I had to make an unscheduled trip to City Hall this morning to get a copy of Jane’s birth certificate. You never know if a visit to City Hall will be quick and easy, or a nightmare scenario from which you can’t awaken. Luckily it was the former, and I made it back to the office with time to spare.

Skateboarding. Hit up JB for a Friday evening session till sundown, and we squeezed in a couple of hours on Sunday afternoon at Ramp Riders. Had to get my fix, as I’ll be off the board until middle of next week at the earliest. Good times were had, as usual.

Cool stuff. Haro Freestyler/Vans collab stuff now available, weeds whacked, Henry’s new ‘do, Janey’s updated and awesome sleeping procedure, $1 flip-flops, iced coffee.

Blog hiatus. As you undoubtedly know, this blog rarely takes a break, but alas, I’ll be enjoying some much-needed vacation time for the next week or so, and writing about the minutiae of my daily life is not in the plans. Back to it on the 10th. Wish us luck.
