november twenty-seventh

Five for November 27th:

Circle of life. One of our closest and longest-standing family friends passed away yesterday, while one of our good friends gave birth to a new baby girl. Rest in peace, Merle, and welcome to the world, Iris. Enjoy the ride.

Hamming it up. No one does it like Jane. Thirteen months old and already a total pro. This kid blows my mind.

STL best breakfast spots. Two of our favorite places (Southwest Diner and Benton Park Café) are listed, proving beyond a doubt our tastes are impeccable. The other three are ones I haven’t been to, primarily due to their locations being well outside our normal strike zone.

Cool stuff. Dark roast coffee from Einstein’s, sleeping in, getting paid, Key and Peele Dueling Hats, avoiding the blizzard, weekend skating, Seoul Taco with Lisa, Winking Owl, August-October eBay Watch.

Thanksgiving. Should be a really fun one this year, as we no longer have to contend with a cranky newborn as was the case in 2012. See you all Monday. Don’t blame the tryptophan.

november twenty-sixth

Five for November 26th:

Current ailments. Lingering sore throat/cough and runny nose (without being a full-blown cold), painfully dry knuckles, perpetually chapped lips.

Being a dad. Getting an enthusiastic “bye!” and a kiss on the lips from my daughter before leaving in the morning is the best thing ever. Fact.

Beastie Boys vs. GoldieBlox. What a calamity. Everyone has an opinion on it, but I think this article sums it up quite nicely.

Cool stuff. La Pizza revisited, Jim Thiebaud deck shipped out, Last Days Here documentary, crappy skateboard of the month, hooking up friends with deals, quality bathroom reading.

Tuesday tuneage. Pentagram, the Fucking Champs, the Smiths, Nick Lowe, Duran Duran, the Strokes.

Monday, November 25, 2013

november twenty-fifth

Five for November 25th:

3-day week. If there’s one reason to love the onset of winter, it’s getting into long-weekend season, which starts this week with a stuffing-filled bang.

South Park. The gumball machine at the Schnucks on Hampton is stocked full of awesome South Park figures. Needless to say, I no longer have any quarters left in my car. Now I just need to complete the set.

Action-packed weekend. Higlights included seeing the Cripplers, Fine Lines and Safes for Scott’s birthday at Heavy Anchor, getting Pi with Lisa, Sara and Bob, taking Jane to see the gingerbread houses, daytime skate session at Ramp Riders with Chris, Andy and Jesse, and the first official NYE practice with Middle Class Fashion at the Lemp Brewery studios.

Cool stuff. New issue of Transworld Skateboarding, super portable play tent for Jane (and me), SMA Natas Kaupas reissue (that somehow flew completely under my radar), getting some sleep, John Cardiel Classic Tales, Peruvian coffee.

Lunchin’. I don’t really need to be spending the money, but getting some La Pizza with Tom today and some Seoul Taco with Lisa either tomorrow or Wednesday sure sounds a lot better than a cold peanut butter and banana sandwich.

november twenty-second

Five for November 22nd:

Shout-out. Got an unsolicited online shout-out from Powell-Peralta yesterday based on a little snapshot I took the other night and posted on Instagram. The digital age is strange and wonderful.

Cover tunes. Dialed in another song for NYE last night, made some good progress on the other two we started last go-round, and got a bunch of ideas for other material down on paper. Feeling much better about the whole thing now. Posters coming next week.

Maplewood. I got my first apartment in Maplewood in 1997, and this is pretty much exactly what it was like then. It's amazing to see how much it has changed (and how much Saratoga has not) since then. Also, World Wide Magazine forever.

Cool stuff. New Camco pedal in the mail, “gender neutral” Tony Hawk Target complete, great Jane daycare drop-off, (completed) professionally framed Jon Lumley artwork, Seoul Taco for lunch.

Weekend. Laying low tonight, hitting up Off Broadway tomorrow night for the KDHX Lou Reed tribute night followed by Heavy Anchor for the Safes, hanging out with some out-of-town friends followed by more NYE practice on Sunday, chilling with Lisa and Janey in between.

november twenty-first

Five for November 21st:

Aldi rules. I’ll be the first to admit I’m a cheap bastard. I hardly ever buy brand-name anything, and I am always (always) looking for whatever the least-expensive version of something is. This article vindicates my unabashed love of Aldi. Live it.

Jim Thiebaud. I never thought I’d see the day, but hot on the heels of the Jim Thiebaud “superhero” deck, Real is reissuing the “hanging klansman”, which is a board I never thought I’d own. They’re cheap, the money goes to a good cause, and with only 250 being made, it’s a no-brainer. Also, Jim is a rad dude and my favorite Instagrammer.

Junk food overload. Yesterday was basically a glorified garbage binge. I need to take a few days off from eating anything other than broccoli and kale.

Cool stuff. Working on a new interview for RFT, Caballero “Dragon and Bats” setup, busting out the fake Frye boots, watching my daughter get smarter by the day, pumpkin yogurt, fuck George Bush.

Band practice. Soldiering on with NYE practice tonight as well as Sunday evening for our first joint practice with Middle Class Fashion. Somebody Tivo “Walking Dead” for me.

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

november twentieth

Five for November 20th:

Pot luck. Happening today. It’s becoming a monthly tradition at work, which is fine by me. Who ever said there’s no such thing as a free lunch?

Irony. You officially have a new name. Not that this should really come as that big of a shock to anyone.

Can I see your ID? While I appreciate the fact that I still get carded regularly, it's getting to be really annoying. Let's be real: I may not look like an old man, but there is no way anyone could possibly think I'm under 21.

Cool stuff. Best CCS catalog in awhile (which isn’t saying much), Mudhoney on Spotify, Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat, cleaning up the iPhone, Ultimate Instant Karma Fails Compilation 2013, Dave Nourie’s Haro Lineage bike check, sweet Descendents sweater.

Attic reorganization. I have some ideas. Nothing drastic, but with space at a premium, I think a few small moves will make a lot of difference. When I’ll ever get a chance to implement these moves is anyone’s guess.

november nineteenth

Five for November 19th:

Skate straight. Fun and mellow session at Ramp Riders last night with Andy, Brian, and Mark, despite the fact that I skated like crap. Any more than 3 or 4 guys skating the mini and it becomes somewhat of a bummer, so crowd-wise, it was right on. Should’ve brought the Danforth with me. Ahwell.

Drum gear. The kick pedal I picked up to replace my old Camco sucked, but luckily I found a similar Camco on eBay for $25 BIN. Done and done. Even comes with a wood beater, which should be interesting.

Caffeine fix. Scored some cheap Starbucks holiday Vias for the workplace yesterday (30% off and super good, go get some), and had some awesome dark Vietnamese coffee on autobrew this morning.

Cool stuff. New issues of the Skateboard Mag and Ride BMX, fresh set of 54MM Bones wheels, pot luck tomorrow, Trader Joe’s granola bars, Wrench Pilot complete collection, interview with the creator of Radical Rick.

Tuesday tuneage. John Coltrane, Mooney Suzuki, The Go-Go’s, Mercyful Fate, Neko Case, Jacuzzi Boys, The Nerves.

Monday, November 18, 2013

november eighteenth

Five for November 18th:

The return of summer. Following a week of frigid temperatures with highs in the mid-30’s, this weekend was a full-on return to sunshine and warm weather- it was even humid at times. Unfortunately, weather like this in November always comes at a cost.

Old man night at Ramp Riders. Every third Monday of the month, over-30’s skate for free. We’ve been known to take advantage of this deal every now and then. Hitting it up tonight for some shreddage following a super fun Saturday sesh at JB.

Black and white. Pro tip: some simple cropping and gray-scaling is the cheap and easy way to make any regular (or even mundane) digital photo a work of art. Of course, it helps tremendously to have such a photogenic subject.

Cool stuff. Arts and crafts with Jane, Key and Peele Continental Breakfast skit, French dips, 2014 travel planning.

Press. We’re number one in a new RFT article Ten St. Louis Acts That Deserve To Be Famous Now- and in some damn fine company as well. Super awesome.

Friday, November 15, 2013

november fifteenth

Five for November 15th:

Merchandise. It keeps us alive. The new Blind Eyes shirts came in last night, and they’re my favorite yet, but then again, I’m a black t-shirt guy. Will be available on our Bandcamp page and at shows soon.

How-to. Remember the good old days? When you could just have a helpful tip about something that wasn't considered a "life hack", or offered under the guise of surviving a zombie apocalypse? Ahhh. I do. Either way, this is pretty cool.

Sleeping in. It doesn’t happen often, especially during the week, but Jane was still snoring away till well after 7 this morning. I actually had to go in there and wake her up. Hitting snooze a few times and getting to sit quietly and drink some coffee in the morning is alright by me.

Cool stuff. Black Label Emergency Riky Barnes deck from Andy, box of peppermint and box of Earl Grey tea for the office, Go-Gos on Spotify, getting paid, good practice.

Weekend plans. KDHX Marvin Gaye tribute show, skating, taking advantage of the mild/warm temperatures, eating good food, general chillaxery with Jane and Lisa.

Thursday, November 14, 2013

november fourteenth

Five for November 14th:

For the win. Came in today wishing I had brought in some yogurt, only to find a key lime Oikos stashed in the fridge that I had forgotten about. Score.

Jane at 13 months. Big steps over the last month or so- both literally and figuratively. For one, she doesn’t crawl at all anymore, ever: it’s walking/running at all times. She’s also learning words and mimicking sounds- “baby” and E-I-E-I-O” are two of her favorites.

Ted Drewes. Braved the cold to get us our first Great Pumpkins of the year last night. I can’t believe we dragged our feet this long. The first bite is always the best.

Cool stuff. Great urban exploration pics, lunch skating, much-needed haircut, X-files on Netflix, last days of BSSS photos, Dane Burman Cold War part.

NYE. Finally starting to get some dates nailed down to start on group rehearsals for New Year’s Eve. We need to get that show on the road. I don’t even know what songs we’re playing yet.

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

november thirteenth

Five for November 13th:

Seoul Taco. Their steak burrito with kimchi rice and “Seoul sauce” is among the best burritos I’ve ever had in my life, and the potstickers are cheap and awesome. The only downside is that the place is super small and table space is at a premium.

Down months. The 5 pm darkness is enough to put me in a rotten mood just by itself, but add sub-zero temperatures this early on? It’s everything I can do not to lose my mind. Already longing for next spring.

The Onion. Their print edition is coming to an end. I remember being in Chicago years ago and picking one up for the first time while getting coffee at Jinx. I’d never heard of it, and I was crying actual tears by the time I’d read through it because I was laughing so hard. Luckily, they’re still hitting it out of the park.

Cool stuff. Goofing with Jane, fresh stock of paper goods, rack of three-buck Chuck, breaking out the pea coat, slappy footage, Thanksgiving four-day weekend, hash browns.

Filmage. Exactly one month away. We shall achieve All.

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

november twelfth

Five for November 12th:

Tom’s last day. Bummed to see my closest friend at work moving on. Today’s his final day here, which is still sort of sinking in. Hitting up Seoul Taco for a last lunch hurrah. The cool thing is, his new office is in Clayton, which will make for easy daytime hangouts going forward.

Ice world. The temperature absolutely plummeted last night. This morning was a balmy 25 degrees complete with frozen ice puddles in the parking lot. Nothing a tea kettle, some good waterproof gloves, and a space heater can’t fix.

11/12/13. Get it? Because today’s date features numbers that appear in their natural order. See you on December 13th next year for the next round of fun and amazement.

Cool stuff. Peanut Butter Puffins, Jamie Thomas’ Zero Cold War part, Pinon coffee, Welcome’s 2014 lineup, teaching Jane new things.

Tuesday tuneage. Superdrag, Fucked Up, The Gun Club, Detroit Cobras, Van Halen, Meat Puppets.

Monday, November 11, 2013

november eleventh

Five for November 11th:

Best fall ever. The weather this past weekend was about as perfect as it gets. Luckily we took full advantage with trips to two parks, open windows in the house, and obligatory lattes to-go.

Benton Park Café. Hadn’t been there since Lisa was pregnant with Jane, but we made our triumphant return on Sunday morning for breakfast pizza, and all was again right with the world.

Skateboarding. Great session at JB over the weekend (getting those back smiths locked in), and hopefully hitting up Ramp Riders tonight to shred the mini with the normal Monday night old-dude crowd.

Cool stuff. Schlafly Coffee Stout has returned, second place at trivia night, spaghetti squash lasagna, Tom’s happy hour, rock show at Gramophone, high-speed photos of wet dogs shaking their heads, holiday card has been designed, best episode of The Walking Dead yet this season.

Trader Joe’s. I don’t have claustrophobia, but being in the Brentwood Trader Joe’s was about as close as I’ve ever come to experiencing it. No joke. Thankfully, they recently underwent a much-needed expansion and doubled their size. Much, much better. Now if they could just do something about that parking lot.

Friday, November 8, 2013

november eighth

Five for November 8th:

Four-day win. Normally a four-day workweek following a day off ends up feeling super long and neverending, but this one actually blew by. I keep thinking today is Thursday, but of course it isn’t, which is pretty great. I’ll take it.

Rocking. Pretty good practice last night after a week off. Little shaky at first, but the second set sounded good. It’s NYE prep from here on out following this weekend’s show, and after that it’s a couple months off to write and record.

School days. Thankfully, the days of dropping Jane off at school being an exhausting and emotional ordeal (for all involved) are over. She’s happy to be there and hang out with her friends and teachers. Definitely a huge relief- those first couple of months were really rough.

Cool stuff. Free sheet of grip and some Rad One stickers, interesting Runaways article in Record Collector, Janey Journal, DLR era Van Halen, insane WWII VD propaganda posters.

Weekend action. Fun one coming up: happy hour at Bottleworks for Tom followed by a trivia night tonight; skating and playing a rock show tomorrow, and plenty of hanging out with Lisa and Jane in between. Added bonus: nice weather before a cold front moves in.

Thursday, November 7, 2013

november seventh

Five for November 7th:

Band practice. Going down tonight after a week off. Show coming up on Saturday night at the Gramophone with Decker and Spectator. Should be a fun one, and our first time there.

Last gasp. The sunshine is back out and the next few days/weekend are looking like they’re going to be pretty nice. I’m definitely going to get out and enjoy it, because there’s some gnarly cold on deck. Already over it.

Jane. She blows my mind on a daily basis. It’s amazing how much she’s able to understand and do now. She’s eating whole pears, feeding her stuffed animals, getting in and out of her cozy coupe, climbing the stairs, giving hugs. It’s crazy. She rules.

Cool stuff. Pike Place Roast vias, Ed Templeton Raiders of the Archives footage, the fact that it feels like a Wednesday but is actually Thursday, box of free stuff from Remo, Husker Du Warehouse: Songs And Stories, Sean Cliver interview.

Stuff I need to get rid of. Bag of clothes for Goodwill (plus more in the closet), broken treadmill and old couch in the basement, leftover Halloween candy.

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

november sixth

Five for November 6th:

Pro tip. If you have an iPhone, just forget the Facebook app. It’s a joke. Keep Facebook open in your Safari and just use that: it’s a million times faster and lets you actually do things like edit comments, tag photos in a timely manner, and a plethora of other things that the app can never seem to do.

Frame job. One of my drawings from JL2042 is being professionally framed by the guy I gave it to. There’s even an engraved plaque inscribed with the little description I wrote for it. Definitely never thought I’d see that happen. Super awesome and hilarious.

Tea. I’ve been on a kick recently. Jasmine green tea at work, and some sort of black tea at home. All the good-feelin’ warmness of a cup of coffee without the unwanted evening caffeine rush.

Cool stuff. $88 pair of jeans for $14.99, Powell-Peralta tie-dye classics series, asiago bagel to go, rock show Saturday.

Tuesday tuneage: Wednesday edition. Seaweed, Mudhoney, Joy Division, Minutemen, Pixies, Refused, Mission of Burma.

Tuesday, November 5, 2013

november fifth

Five for November 5th:

Four-day weekend. Made the most of an extra couple of days off and it completely felt like a legit little vacation. Didn’t hurt that the weather was amazing. Good way to ring in the end of daylight savings. Now to attempt to get caught up.

Fall colors. Last year the summer heat scorched the leaves off the trees by mid-July, making fall a total dud in the color-changing department. This year, however, we’re getting an amazing one. I think Friday was the peak day, and luckily I was there to soak some of it in.

Dialing in the e-drums. Finally got a cable to run a line out into an amp to play sans-headphones, and also got my iPod set up through the headphones to play along with actual tracks. Even though I think electronic drums are inherently lame, it is so awesome to be able to practice at home.

Cool stuff. Box of Jasmine tea for the office, new issue of Thrasher, new Dan’s Comp catalog, Pujol at Off Broadway, two skate sessions at JB, bonding with Jane, Bake & Destroy, new pair of Vans, cheap Element hoodie, car wash, Southwest Diner.

Dinner guests. Had friends over on both Friday night and Monday night. Good times, good food, and way too many dishes to wash.
