april thirtieth

Five for April 30th:

April. Blasted by. Our last full month of familial normalcy before our son is born officially ends today. May should be an interesting and awesome month, to say the least.

Change of surroundings. A little office rearranging yesterday is putting me in a good mood. Tossed some stuff out, hung some new pictures, and just changed things up a bit. I’m in here right hours a day, might as well keep things fresh.

Serving and protecting you to death. The real “thugs” of Baltimore: 5 things everyone needs to know about the city’s police. Since 2010, Baltimore police have killed 109 people. Nearly half were unarmed and 70 percent were black.

Cool stuff. Super fun night with Janey, Lecherous Gaze Zeta Reticuli Blues, Dogtown pizza, No Way Back video, Vision street ghost reissues.

Morning skate spot. The newly rebuilt parking lot down in the Loop is just awesome. Mega-smooth blacktop mixed with brick, and a whole slew of pristine, buttery white curbs to slide on. Got to get it in early though, because by midday it’s too crowded to do anything on.

aprill twenty-ninth

Five for April 29th:

Friends of Clifton Park. Spring membership drive is happening. Donate some dough and help support one of the most beautiful parks in the city (and Lisa’s amazing nonprofit).

Two-dollar Tuesdays. Hit up SoHa last night with my two favorite girls for some cheap burgers and drinks, plus it was a good excuse to take a walk around the neighborhood and enjoy the killer weather.

Henry. Got a much-needed haircut/deep clean/ beard trim/socialization session in yesterday.

Cool stuff. Tip to Tail: Episode 4, lost buildings of St. Louis, chori pollo, Psycho Sticks in new colors (and modern concaves), lost bowl jam, Forest Park in full bloom, selling stuff on eBay.

Wednesday soundtrack. Hell Night, Black Lips, Neko Case, Paxidils, the Sword, Mercyful Fate.

Tuesday, April 28, 2015

april twenty-eighth

Five for April 28th:

Iron Maiden. Brave New World, Dance of Death, and Rock in Rio- long absent from Spotify for some unknown reason- are now available for streaming. A Matter of Life and Death is still, conspicuously, nowhere to be found.

Finances. I’m terrible with them. Luckily, Lisa is not. Case in point: yesterday, when we cut the life of our home loan in half and saved a mountain in interest.

Baltimore must-reads. Cops are the terrorists in our neighborhood: On Freddie Gray, another victim of police brutality, Orioles Executive On Baltimore Unrest: It's Inequality, Stupid, Police Watch as Baltimore Burns.

Cool stuff. Jane back to 100%, morning curb session, Three Day Metro Pass- Barcelona, bubble tea, Ranchito with Tom.

Bones Brigade reissues. Another new run of colorways are coming in mid-June. Not really crazy about any of these, with the exception of the hot pink Tony Hawk which is pretty awesome. They’re really milking this thing for all it’s worth.

Monday, April 27, 2015

april twenty-seventh

Five for April 27th:

Sick baby blues. Spent most of the weekend tending to a fever-ridden daughter, which basically means sitting on the couch watching Frozen and eating popsicles. Thankfully, it looks like she’s starting to feel better this morning.

Around the house. Donated three boxes of old books, threw/gave away a ton of random crap, trimmed the bushes and trees, mowed and edged, planted the tomato and basil plants.

Freddie Gray. You'd hardly know it from watching the news, but there are actually massive protests over the latest violent, unwarranted police death going on in Baltimore right now.

Cool stuff. Ham, block of wax from Ride magazine in the mail (still waiting on that latest issue, though), Sunday morning donuts, Henry grooming appointment, gripping the Jinx, rad leftovers.

BMX. Went to check out the dirt jumps off of Grant’s Trail yesterday, but following a full day of rain on Saturday, it was a bit too muddy to ride. Definitely looking forward to going back once it dries up a bit.

april twenty-fourth

Five for April 24th:

Trifling weather. What the hell happened to Spring? This cloudy, 50’s and 60’s stuff is sort of bumming me out. Bring on the heat.

Dad and Janey date. Grilled cheese sandwiches at Bread Company followed by ice cream at Mr. Wizards (which shall henceforth be called Mr. Lizard’s, per Jane). Gets no better than that.

Texas requiring cops to learn how to not shoot dogs. It's interesting, because, you know, I already know how to not shoot dogs. It's actually a relatively simple two-step process. Step one: don't pull out a gun and point it at a dog. Step two: don't pull the trigger. 37 years and not a single dog dead. I don't consider myself an anomaly.

Cool stuff. GTV on Youtube, bro lunch, yesterday afternoon boardslide session, Flight of the Conchords revisited, Ricky Gervais.

Weekend action. Possibly watching the Blues game somewhere tonight, BMX trails tomorrow morning, hanging out with family in town, playing with Jane, potential skate sesh at Ramp Riders, random house projects.

Thursday, April 23, 2015

april twenty-third

Five for April 23rd:

New contacts. There’s no feeling like popping in a fresh pair for the first time, especially after enduring the previous pair for quite a bit longer than you probably should have.

Blues. A solid 6-1 shellacking of Minnesota last night ties the series after a dismal game 3. Let’s put this baby to bed already.

Taj Mahal. We found out the hard way that apparently they are now closed for some arbitrary reason every Wednesday. What the hell? The curry noodles we ended up getting were good enough, but no substitute for tikka masala.

Cool stuff. Watching Jane's imagination grow in real time, Haunted ride-Costa Rica, in-depth article on St. Louis’ metal scene, Sean Malto Skate Free, getting the front yard mowed, Ferris Bueller righteous dude button set.

El Gordo’s Revenge. Nick Normal is in town, and the mother lode of Action Packed! records should soon be in my possession after almost 20 years of sitting in a south city attic. Who knows what kind of condition they’ll be in, but hopefully enough of them will be in good shape to sell/give away.

Wednesday, April 22, 2015

april twenty-second

Five for April 22nd:

Jane-mandated repairs. Blue plastic robot toy (arm superglued back on), novelty Florida alligator magnet (magnet superglued back on to alligator), Fancy Nancy cardboard fan (fan portion duct-taped back on to wooden handle).

Propeller. The new Vans skate video premier went down last night. I seriously can’t wait to see this, if just for the new Ray Barbee and Steve Caballero parts alone.

BMXing. Got in a half hour or so of riding last night before the sun went down. Highlights included crashing on a hang-five, popping some pretty big bunnyhops out of the ditch, and figuring out how to hand-tighten my loose axle (pro tip: lefty tighty, righty loosey).

Cool stuff. Jason Phelan rail backflip, French toast, sidewalk chalk, Taj Mahal lunch date with Lisa, 10 of the most inspiring slappys.

Record junkies. This article on insane record collections and the people who own them is a must-see. I’m not much of a music collector, but I understand the mentality. Drool-worthy stuff.

Tuesday, April 21, 2015

april twenty-first

Five for April 21st:

Three years. Somehow, I was able to convince this amazing woman to not just date, but ultimately marry and have kids with me. Still working through the details on how I managed to pull that one off. Anyway, three years ago today it happened, and even though the time has blasted by, it has been nothing but awesome. Here's to many, many more!

Date night. Jane spent the night with the grandparents on the farm and Lisa and I hit up Dressel’s in the Central West End for some food, drinks, and conversation- no doubt our last solo night out for a while.

Catching air. Thinking about hitting up the BMX jumps by Grant’s Trail this weekend if possible. I’ll be on the “beginner” section. Who’s in?

Cool stuff. New issue of The Skateboard Mag, Pike Place vias, afternoon boardslide session, morning drums, New Girl revisited, the R2-D2 airplane.

Tuesday soundtrack. Sunny Day Real Estate, The Sword, Television, Tilts, the Stranglers, Teengenerate, Red Fang.

Monday, April 20, 2015

april twentieth

Five for April 20th:

Alvarez 4/20 Grateful Dead promo. I don’t mean to brag, but this was my idea.

The right’s made-up God. How bigots invented a white supremacist Jesus.

Toys in the attic. Jane loves going up there and rummaging around in my stuff. Last night we played with G.I. Joes, M.U.S.C.L.E. figures, guitar picks, and Garbage Pail Kids, finishing it off with a drum solo.

Cool stuff. My new favorite picture of Jane, date night, Simple Session 2015 highlights, new deck umbrella, gelato, the hidden forest, chicken kebabs, dog bath, Star Wars Celebration photos.

Skating. Mellow session with Andy and Josh at JB on Saturday, solo roll-around at Kingshighway on Sunday, short and sweet curb crunch this morning before heading in.

Friday, April 17, 2015

april seventeenth

Five for April 17th:

Star Wars. The newest trailer for The Force Awakens was released yesterday, and despite my good-natured comedic jabbery, I have to admit it looks pretty f*cking amazing and I’m excited to see it.

"Free-range parenting". Or, as I like to call it, "parenting": "The state can’t infringe on parental control over child-raising unless they have real evidence showing that there is a genuinely significant threat to the childrens’ safety and well-being. Forcibly detaining elementary school-aged kids for walking by themselves in a safe, middle-class neighborhood doesn’t even come close to meeting the necessary standard."

Skate or die. Sweltering evening at Ramp Riders, but fun as always. Chris C was on a mission to completely demolish the mini-ramp, and he nearly succeeded.

Cool stuff. Simple Session 2015, morning coffee on the front porch, Kashi Cinnamon Harvest, Jeff Grosso’s Guide to Inverts, Sumatra stash.

Weekend action. Mellow one coming up: Frozen yogurt and hitting the playground with Jane tonight, skating tomorrow, maybe checking out some Record Store day shows, mowing the lawn, playing drums, hanging out.

Thursday, April 16, 2015

april sixteenth

Five for April 16th:

St. Louis Blues. Playoffs start tonight. This is our year. I can feel it.

Skate session. Going down this evening at Ramp Riders with the old man crew in half-to-full representation. Come bring the shred.

Naypwidaw. I had no idea this massive, multibillion-dollar Myanmar city existed. Apparently, no one in Myanmar does either, as it is essentially a well-maintained ghost city in the middle of a jungle.

Cool stuff. 1985 Haro FST Brian Blyther tribute bike, block captain sighting, 40 years of Tracker Trucks book, lunch with Lisa, Tip to Tail: Episode 3.

Street Plant. As much as I would love to get some of the stuff they’re putting out, the prices are outrageous. $100 plus $30 shipping for a heat transfer reissue deck? That is insane, regardless of limited availability. I know they’ve gotta pay the bills, but I can’t get behind a company that would gouge their customer base like that- nor could I afford to, even if I wanted to.

Wednesday, April 15, 2015

april fifteenth

Five for April 15th:

Three years. Our anniversary is next Tuesday. Pretty mind blowing to think of how different our lives were a mere three years ago.

Last night. Deviated from the meal plan for an evening and walked up to SoHa to grab some $2 burgers, followed by a trip to Clifton Park for a bit of swinging and exploration of the hidden forest.

Get action. Snuck in a 20-minute skate session at lunch yesterday and another 20 minutes or so of freestylin’ at dusk. Got to take it where I can get it.

Cool stuff. 80’s St. Louis jheri curl commercial, thinning the drumhead herd, Colony BMX- Nathan Sykes, Ramp Repair at Josh Borden’s- Part 1, amazing weather.

Stand your ground. Amazing pictorial showcasing defiant Chinese property owners refusing to give up their homes despite massive development all around them.

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

april fourteenth

Five for April 14th:

Homies. Big thanks to Kevin “Kvn” McDermott for swinging by with his 32-foot ladder last night and repairing a broken vent cover way up on our house, for the price of a bottle of tequila. A superb musician and all-around dude.

Mornings with Jane. Watched Clifford, shared some cereal, diapered up a bear puppet, built a bristle block robot (plus picnic table and four chairs), and played catch with a baseball keychain, all by 7:45 am.

Ramp Riders. Not only is it one of the coolest skate/bmx parks in town, but the people that work there are rad and will help you out with a walk-in bike repair, as was the case last night when I couldn’t get my loose axle tightened. Support them.

Cool stuff. Magic “mummy” deck, Elephant hat from SCS, The Munsters and Daredevil on Netflix, Barrier Kult: one day in skateboarding, Trail Pirates, homemade walnut & golden raisin trail mix.

Tuesday soundtrack. Shonen Knife, Art Brut, the Cramps, Kreator, Ghoul 5, Metallica, Samiam, Minutemen, Big Boys.

Monday, April 13, 2015

april thirteenth

Five for April 13th:

Tom & Emily. Was honored to have been asked to be a groomsman at their wedding on Saturday at the Sheldon. Great people, good times, awesome food, perfect weather, and killer rooftop views.

Lawn season. It is officially upon us: first mow of the year happened yesterday evening. Not a moment too soon either, given last night’s rainfall. It was almost to the point that my manual push-mower would be rendered wholly ineffective.

Miscellaneous weekendery. Sunday morning skate session at JB with the old man crew, kid playdate with Brian from Shadows Fall, dinner and drinks at Soulard’s with the wedding party, goofing off with Jane, playing some GTA.

Cool stuff. Five weeks till Lisa's due date, Juice Magazine #73, Cardinals opening day, Jake Petruchik- Kink 2015 video, (more) homemade peanut butter cookies, Spring Fling 7 photo gallery.

Frightening reality. US cops killed more people in one month than the UK did in the entire 20th century.

Friday, April 10, 2015

april tenth

Five for April 10th:

Backyard garden. It’s really come up over this past week. We’re going to be swimming in more kale and baby tomatoes than we’ll know what to do with in a month or so.

Jane. One minute she’s a little helpless baby in a swaddle, and the next she’s running around at her school, operating machinery. Time flies.

GTA: Episodes from Liberty City. Picked up a used copy at Gamestop yesterday for $8. Given that the only video games I like at all (more are less) these days are GTA titles, I have no idea why I waited so long to get this. As expected, it rules.

Cool stuff. Friday morning boardslides, new issue of Transworld Skateboarding, fresh haircut, Salba tiger reissues, Anthony Perrin & Joris Coulomb Park Session, Instagram editing updates.

Weekend action. Tom’s wedding rehearsal dinner, Tom’s wedding, Jane turns 2.5, skating at JB, mowing the lawn, ditch BMX, BBQ, hanging out with the family.

Thursday, April 9, 2015

april ninth

Five for April 9th:

To-do list. Our list of crap to do around the house is growing by the day. Luckily, it’s lots of small stuff, and not rebuilding concrete steps, tearing down and reconstructing decks, and demolishing and re-paving driveways- as was the case last spring and summer.

Feidin Santana. The hero of the day. This guy should be getting a medal from the president, not fearing for his life.

Iron Maiden. They’re remastering their entire back catalog from the original studio tapes, and providing some mind-blowing pictures of them in the process.

Cool stuff. Sumatra roast coffee, new (cheap) deck box, work snack restock, midday solo sesh, dinner on the back patio, skateboarding New York’s abandoned psych ward, sharing oranges with Jane, Tip to Tail: episode 2.

Rainy Thursday soundtrack. Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros, the Jam, Red Kross, the Stranglers, Greenhornes, Dead Moon, Bollweevils, New Bomb Turks.

Wednesday, April 8, 2015

april eighth

Five for April 8th:

Good eating. Lisa and I are totally down with keeping our current eating plan going indefinitely, so that’s what’s happening. Just cutting out refined sugar and white flour has made such an awesome difference: less tired, less bloated, leaner, and more energy. Can’t beat it.

Policing the police. It’s your civic duty.

Why I left the GOP. “My old Republican worldview was flawed because it was based upon a small and particularly rosy sliver of reality. To preserve that worldview, I had to believe that people had morally earned their “just” desserts, and I had to ignore those whining liberals who tried to point out that the world didn’t actually work that way.”

Cool stuff. High home appraisal numbers, Ogilvie wins ward 24, homemade pizza, Atari: Game Over on Netflix, Thrasher Chris Pfanner interview.

Lawn season. The honeymoon is over- first mow of the season is going to have to happen this weekend, especially given all the rain we’ve been getting. The good news? Getting stuff in and out of the basement is now 100% easier, which should make the whole thing at least marginally less stressful.

Tuesday, April 7, 2015

april seventh

Five for April 7th:

Storm mode. It’s going to get ugly today, and off and on for pretty much the entire next week save for a few days here and there. At least Saturday is looking good. Batten down the hatches.

BMX. I’ve been eyeing this ditch by my house for a long time and finally got out and rode it yesterday evening. You can do some fun 2-foot or so flyouts by hitting the lip at a good speed. Even squeaked out a couple of half-assed x-ups. Only a thirty second ride from my driveway, so I’ll definitely be back.

Six weeks. A mere month and some change until our son’s due date, which is awesome and nuts. Big changes coming down the pike. I’m excited.

Cool stuff. Sweet credit scores, Dan’s Comp mag grab bag, week two of healthy eating, free lunch at work tomorrow (which I may or may not partake of, see previous), Starbucks expands free college plan to four years.

Tuesday soundtrack. Dum Dum Girls, Fox and the Law, CaveofswordS, White Mystery, Descendents, Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC.

Monday, April 6, 2015

april sixth

Five for April 6th:

Egg hunts. Between the neighborhood egg hunt on Saturday, our backyard on Sunday, and all over the house the rest of the time, Jane spent more time over the weekend in pursuit of plastic eggs than not.

Hanging out. Backyard chilling for Laura and Annie’s housewarming, drinks with Tom and crew for his bachelor party at Royale, running into old friends at the park, having mom over for burgers.

Around the house. Patched our broken rake back together with some duct tape and tack nails, got the bookshelf moved out of the baby’s room to a new home, disassembled and threw out two broken deck umbrellas, medicated the dog.

Cool stuff. Cardinals win the season opener, driveway BMX, hitting up Future Sk8 before they move, Growlie.

Skateboarding. Early morning session at JB yesterday was killer, with awesome weather and low turnout, ostensibly due to the holiday. Plus, got in a few minutes of rolling around in the Loop this morning before heading in. Still need to check out White Birch Park, which may happen this coming weekend.

Friday, April 3, 2015

april third

Five for April 3rd:

White Birch Park. Apparently, there’s a free outdoor skatepark in Hazelwood with two mini ramps and a bunch of other fun stuff, which I didn’t even know existed. How did that happen? Excited to check it out.

Worm minefield. My driveway this morning was littered with what I thought were long, thin twigs that had blown off a nearby tree. Upon closer inspection- and to the delight of Jane- it was actually a ton of worms that had taken refuge from the soiled ground.

Thrashin’. Mega fun time last night at Ramp Riders with a huge crew turning out. Split a ten-pass with Andy for maximum affordability.

Cool stuff. New issue of Thrasher, Tip to Tail episode 1, credit card is paid off, Pollo Yucatan, Dakota Roche Above Below, sleeping with the windows open.

Weekend action. Clifton Park egg hunt, working on the baby’s room, drinks with Tom and co. for his bachelor party, skating, BMXing, checking out Laura and Annie's new pad, cleaning up the basement.

Thursday, April 2, 2015

april second

Five for April 2nd:

30 days of healthy eating. Four days in and going swimmingly. The only stuff I’m really craving is Mi Ranchito, Seoul Taco, and the usual lunch stuff- but the food I’ve been bringing in every day has been so good it’s hardly notable.

Skateboarding. Ramp Riders session going down tonight with all the usual suspects, minus Chris C whose wife just gave birth yesterday. Congrats buddy! I’m right behind you.

Internet justice. NYPD Detective Stripped Of Gun And Badge After Xenophobic Rant Caught On Video, Yelp Users Troll the Hell Out of Indiana Pizza Place over Gay Wedding Comments.

Cool stuff. Refinancing, how DLR really left Van Halen, Henry Rollins interview, whole wheat pasta, junkfood trifecta, backyard baseball (sort of) with Jane.

The state of Indiana. Somebody just wipe it off the map already and be done with it.

Wednesday, April 1, 2015

april first

Five for April 1st:

I’m pregnant. April fools.

Hoodies R.I.P. Had to officially say goodbye to my gray hoodie (broken zipper) and my beloved Element hoodie (worn out to the point of looking like it was pulled off a homeless person). We had some good times.

Good mail day. New issue of the Skateboard Mag and the latest Dan’s Comp catalog showed up yesterday (not to mention a new Zoo magazine for Jane). Plus, renewed my TW Ride subscription for mega cheap.

Cool stuff. This Is Why Ben Raybourn Is Not Your Normal Young Pro, Glenn Danzig roast spoof, new Humanoids record in the works, front-porchin’ with Jane, homemade peanut butter cookies, coffee break with Corey Martinez.

BMX. Fumbled my way into the jankiest funky chicken of all time last night, and lasted about two scuffs before the whole thing came crashing down. Still, pretty cool.
