august thirty-first

Five for August 31st:

This year is flying by. I seriously cannot believe tomorrow is already September. Summer is fading fast. At least my birthday is in there.

Weekend grub. Summer omelet and pancakes at Chris’, baseball cap sundaes at Ted Drewes, sno-cones at Deer Creek park, homemade meatloaf.

Skating. Super fun Saturday session at JB with Andy and Brian. After skating Webster so much lately, that place is like a breath of fresh air. Added bonus of low crowds due to the increased popularity of Morganford.

Cool stuff. New set of Spitfire 53mm Formula Fours, Tronald Dump, Rich D back at SLM, new Thrasher shirt, Mike V Ride Channel interview, Lost in Transition teaser.

Werk. The busiest I’ve ever been at the day job these last few weeks. Pros: time flies, more money. Cons: high stress, loss of sanity. Ahwell.

august twenty-eighth

Five for August 28th:

Three months. Our little dude hit the ¼ year mark yesterday, despite the fact he’s already in 9-month baby clothes. Sticker pic forthcoming, a day late and a dollar short.

Three years. It was on this very day in 2012 we got our first look at Jane, via 3D ultrasound. Flash forward 36 short months, and we’re eating frosted mini-wheats together on the couch watching Dinotrux and laughing at farts. Parenthood rules.

Lawnmower man. I’m perhaps a little too stoked on the grass-cutting capabilities of my new lawnmower. I should probably stop talking about it.

Cool stuff. VHS camcorder app, quick early morning ramp roll, new issue of Thrasher, Allroy Saves, free Iron Maiden Speed of Light video game, popcorn Friday.

Weekend action. Loose plans include hanging out/flatland riding with Greg tonight, hitting Jason’s estate sale tomorrow, Heavy Metal Brunch on Sunday, various parks with kids/skate buddies, taking Jane to Baskin-Robbins, and whatever else comes along.

Thursday, August 27, 2015

august twenty-seventh

Five for August 27th:

Dog days. Got to give a belated National Dog Day shout-out to my buddy Henry, the greatest dude on four legs. Celebrated with some turkey scraps and sleeping on Lisa’s pillow.

Lunchtime rides. Throwing the BMX in the car in the morning and hitting a nearby parking lot for a half hour or so of flatland riding is becoming my new go-to afternoon stress reliever, as there is absolutely nothing worth skating anywhere near where I work.

Brian Posehn. At the Firebird on October 14th. Probably the funniest stand-up I’ve ever seen in person (not that I’ve seen much of it). Don’t miss, unless you hate things that are humorous.

Cool stuff. New exersaucer for George, very crappy skateboard of the month, Dinotrux with Jane, evenings at the park, new Black Label Matt Hensley and Jason Adams sleds, Pool’s Gold: episode two.

Tonight. One of two things will happen: I'll go see 7 Seconds at the Demo, or I'll fall asleep on the couch watching South Park. Either scenario is fine with me.

august twenty-sixth

Five for August 26th:

Morning meetings. Three this week? At least we had bagels and coffee today.

Eleven Magazine. Evan has done a fantastic job revitalizing and re-energizing Eleven as editor over the last couple of years- so much so that he apparently now owns it. Well deserved. I see good things in the future.

BMX. Rolled away from a boomerang yesterday for the first time yesterday afternoon. Well, maybe I cheated a bit with my foot on the front tire, but it’s still rad to finally stick a new trick. Going for the boomerang-to-tailwhip combo once I get them dialed.

Cool stuff. Ranchito with Aaron, Sabian swag, Donald Trump Is Going to Lose Because He Is Crazy, Zorlac Zero Hero on Youtube.

Check daily. Skate Warehouse Daily Dose, SoCal Skates blowout section, SkateOne specials section, Seshday, Craigslist.

Tuesday, August 25, 2015

august twenty-fifth

Five for August 25th:

Big girl. Jane spent her first night ever in her big girl bed last night, which is both awesome (she slept like a log and the transition was seamless) and sad (I can’t believe the days of putting her to bed in her crib are coming to an end). I know I say this all the time, but she’s growing up too fast.

Dear Stl City. I was under the impression that “big trash pickup day” meant that big trash was picked up on that day. Maybe I was wrong?

Eazy breezy. There’s nothing that puts me in a good mood faster than having the AC off and the windows wide open. These past few days have been unreal, especially for a St. Louis August.

Cool stuff. Iron Maiden 2016 world tour, morning drums, gyro pizza, Aldibrau, Shad Johnson: Realtime, Drew Bezanson’s quest to feel fear, Pure Fun Instagram shout-out, new socks, lunchtime flatland session.

Tuesday soundtrack. Motorhead, Elvis Costello, Pretty Things, Gaunt, No Means No, The Thermals, Samhain.

Monday, August 24, 2015

august twenty-fourth

Five for August 24th:

Cleaning house. Got a ton of stuff out of the basement this weekend: a musty old couch, broken treadmill, and a couple of barstools to the curb for big trash pickup, and I sold an old Huffy BMX I had sitting down there for eighty bucks. Feels awesome to lighten the load a bit.

Hulu Plus. Canceling it as soon as I’m caught up on South Park. Sorry, but there is no scenario where I’ll be paying $7.99 a month (or any price) for a streaming video service where I’m inundated with ads. Not having to deal with ads is sort of the whole point.

Adventure squad. Lots of good times with Jane yesterday, including a nature walk around the neighborhood, trip to Ted Drewes for baseball cap sundaes, a stop at Clifton Park, and capped it off with some soccer in the backyard. That kid rules.

Cool stuff. New skateshop open in Maplewood, King Shit Jeff Grosso interview, Haro raglan ’86 jersey, new lawnmower, homemade breakfast pizza & bruschetta burgers, Abandoned factory in Detroit home to $1m worth of collectable sports cards.

Drum fixin’. Thanks to Brian for once again repairing the cymbal on my cheap-ass electronic drum kit for the infinitely reasonable cost of ten bucks and a Snickers. Time to jam some Master of Puppets.

Friday, August 21, 2015

august twenty-first

Five for August 21st:

Janey quote of the day. "I bought this fish bib for you at the liquor store."

Riding BMX. Fun flatland session in some U-City church parking lot yesterday afternoon. Almost stuck a couple of boomerangs but couldn’t quite keep the momentum on them. Thought it was a bust when a cop pulled up, but he was cool and just said “you’re good”, and parked his car to eat some lunch..

Dear Spotify. What sort of warped, alternate universe are you living in where you think anyone wants- or will even be remotely cool with this shit? The cognitive dissonance that these companies develop after long enough is astounding.

Cool stuff. Getting paid, work coffee resupply, Goonies house shut down after owner gets sick of people doing the Truffle Shuffle on the lawn, Sean Burns Hell Ride, Lester Kasai interview, popcorn Friday, the Sword at Ready Room.

Weekend action. T-shirt retrieving, bike selling, e-drum repairing, new lawnmower buying, farmer’s market attending, skatepark hitting, kid hanging-out-withing.

Thursday, August 20, 2015

august twentieth

Five for August 20th:

Pure Fun. Super awesome box of goodies showed up yesterday, including three copies of the new issue, a t-shirt, and some pins and stickers! Thanks again to Larry for asking me to be a part of it.

Growing up fast. George has already graduated up to size 2 diapers and is becoming more aware by the day, and Jane is now potty-trained, gymnastics-taking, big-girl-bed having, pre-preschooler who routinely corrects my grammar. What happened?

Nailed it. "If only Jared Fogle had sold moral superiority, like Josh Duggar, instead of sandwiches, he could have walked free and Governor Mike Huckabee would have absolved him for touching underage girls. TLC might even have offered him a fabulous TV special about his redemption by a Lord too preoccupied to stop molestations, but never too busy to forgive them afterwards! Isn't He good to us? Well, some of us.” –Mrs. Betty Bowers

Cool stuff. Afternoon BMX, new La Croix, Skatemaster Tate flexi-disc, lunch with Tom, electronic drum repair (thanks Scheffer).

Mr. Show revisited. As a diehard fan of Bob and David and a frequent quoter of all things Mr. Show, this cannot come soon enough.

Wednesday, August 19, 2015

august nineteenth

Five for August 19th:

Launch party. Lisa is now doing independent work for Rodan + Fields on the side and is having a business kickoff party at Rung Boutique on September 10th. She’ll be donating half the proceeds from sales that night to Rung to help support women and kids, so come hang out with us.

65353 pageviews. Sixty five thousand people and counting disappointed by this blog.

The end of red light tickets. The Missouri Supreme Court yesterday struck down red light ordinances- a win for all of those that don’t like the idea of living in a surveillance society. "Summed up- if you have a ticket, you don't have to pay it."

Cool stuff. NOS H-Street hat and new set of rails from Future Sk8, peach cobbler at work, mild temperatures, South Park and The Simpsons on Hulu Plus, afternoon boardslides.

Delusions of autumn. Fellow St. Louisans- that fall you're all romanticizing? It doesn't exist. Don't forget where you live. If you're lucky, maybe you'll get three weeks of jacket weather before it gets cold as balls and it's dark out at 4:30 pm. Enjoy those pumpkin spice lattes.

Tuesday, August 18, 2015

august eighteenth

Five for August 18th:

Busy season. Work is crazy to the point that normal time-killer stuff like blogging and posting random crap on Instagram is becoming difficult if not almost impossible most days. Not that I’m complaining.

Let Me Ride. Two and a half minutes of a dude killing it on an old school Haro Sport. The music is terrible, though, so turn the volume down.

Priorities. With a day or so of rain in the forecast and the yard already pretty gnarly, I may end up regretting my choice to forego mowing the back lawn last night in favor of going skating with Andy and Brian at Webster. But I stand by my decision.

Cool stuff. Krispy Kremes at work, mini-me, Clifton Park monster date with Jane, burgers on the grill, Folded Mountains American pale ale, Andy White is Ron Rhombus.

Tuesday soundtrack. Paxidils, Murder City Devils, Lemuria, Lifetime, Suicidal Tendencies, Bad Religion, Ghost, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers.

Monday, August 17, 2015

august seventeenth

Five for August 17th:

Facetime. When Jane is still snoozing in the mornings and I don’t get a chance to see her before I leave, I can always count on a Facetime call to brighten things up. The wonders of modern technology.

Darkness falls. That dreaded time of year where it’s starting to get noticeably darker noticeably earlier is upon us. A few weeks ago I’d be able to put Jane to bed at 7:30, go outside and mow the front and back lawns and still have daylight to spare. Last night I barely finished the front before I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face.

Movie night. The second annual Friends of Clifton Park movie night was a smashing success, with well over 200 people in attendance and rad food from the Yemanja Brasil and Brazzies food trucks, respectively. Super proud of Lisa and her team for putting it together and pulling it off.

Cool stuff. Cheap Converse skate shoes, Jane’s big-girl bed, Thai birthday dinner for Mom with the crew, Assault HMC guest boards, new issue of Ride BMX.
Skating. Mellow struggle sesh at JB on Sunday with Brian and a few others. Got some tricks in and bailed before I keeled over from heat exhaustion. Possible Webster roll-around tonight.

Friday, August 14, 2015

august fourteenth

Five for August 14th:

Clifton Park movie night. Happening tomorrow. Come out, watch Ghostbusters, get some food truck grub and have a few drinks under the stars.

Pure Fun. The 25th anniversary issue of Pure Fun skate zine is available now! I am stoked to have contributed an article to this milestone issue- a personal recollection of the STL world premiere of the Powell Ban This video- along with some memorabilia I held on to from that night. Having a piece in a legendary skate zine with Lance Mountain on the cover and a Skatemater Tate flexi-disc was definitely not something I ever thought would happen, but life is funny like that. Go pick up a few copies.

New Maiden. The single for “Speed of Light” officially dropped this morning, the first new Iron Maiden material in half a decade. While it’s not blowing my mind, it’s a nice solid 5-minute metal romper- and better than anything on Final Frontier- so that’s a good start. Looking forward to hearing the rest of it.

Cool stuff. Republicans panic as Bernie Sanders files bill to make Election Day a national holiday, morning curb sesh, Spitfire adopts the Cardiel rail, ’88 Brian Blyther/Mike Dominguez interview, Pool’s Gold- Episode 1, steak burrito from Seoul Taco.

Weekend action. Movie night, mom’s birthday, Jane ice cream date, lawn care, skateboard riding, and general hanging-out related activities.

Thursday, August 13, 2015

august thirteenth

Five for August 13th:

Wet Hot. Finished the First Day of Camp series last night, and it was much better than I was expecting it to be. Hilarious, actually. They need to make more.

The christening. George peed on me for the first time this morning while I was changing his diaper. Guess it had to happen sooner or later.

New computer. My new desktop at work- while probably relatively antiquated by anyone else’s standards- is life changing. The days of waiting five minutes for a PDF to open are over.

Cool stuff. HBO confirms Deadwood may live again, morning skatepark/lunchtime flatland BMX sessions, eggplant parmesan, new tube of construction adhesive, cereal with Jane.

Oath Keepers. I'm thinking about joining up. Think they'll accept a Jewish-born atheist who doesn't own a gun and voted for Obama twice? Keeping my fingers crossed!

Wednesday, August 12, 2015

august twelfth

Five for August 12th:

First day of 36th grade. Three years later and this is still the greatest thing ever posted on Facebook.

Henry. He had gotten to a point of shagginess rarely reached, so a trip to the groomer was a must. Looking sharp and feeling like a new Schnoodle.

Business dinner. Mi Ranchito tonight after work with some coworkers and the rep from Martin strings. Tecate with a lime and carnitas in t-minus 6.5 hours.

Cool stuff. Quality morning George time, Lost in Translation: Casey Smith, 8 Reasons Skateboarding Will Never Turn Into Baseball (or Any Other Sport), Mark Gonzales on Tim O'Connor Podcast, donuts at work, Death or Glory: Iron Maiden interviewed.

Facebook. Deleted the FB app off my iPhone a couple of weeks ago and haven’t missed it at all. If I need to check it from my phone I just pull it up in Safari and it’s basically exactly the same. A completely redundant waste of precious storage.

Tuesday, August 11, 2015

august eleventh

Five for August 11th:

Janey. At some point my daughter became a teenager from a John Hughes movie.

Rearrangement. Spent some time up in the attic this morning doing some much-needed clearing, cleaning and consolidating.

Up the Irons. While the full release of Book of Souls is still a month or so away (and getting good reviews already), an exclusive 'Speed of Light' CD single + T-shirt box will be available on Friday! I’ll be snagging one of those combos for sure.

Cool stuff. New SC Hosoi “Monk” reissue, white noise app, Vernon’s with Tom, Dennis Enarson Ceeklife vid + An Honest Interview, Jane gymnastics class pics, Henry at the groomer, fancy La Croix.

Tuesday soundtrack. Fugazi, Fox and the Law, Tom Petty, Mutoid Man, Lion’s Daughter, the Kinks, David Bowie, Cheap Trick.

Monday, August 10, 2015

august tenth

Five for August 10th:

Thrasher. Subscription: renewed. I need another Thrasher t-shirt like I need a hole in my head, but can you really ever have too many?

JB. Hit it up with Andy and a few others yesterday morning for the first time in a long time. It was super fun to get back there and skate the quarter again. Started to get frontside bonelesses-to tail dialed in which is rad.

Potty trained. With the exception of nighttime, Jane is now basically completely toilet trained, to the point where when she has to go to the bathroom, she’s just walking in there and taking care of business. Super proud of her.

Cool stuff. Renewing license plates online, Baskin-Robbins and Rocket Park with Jane, $35 Hosoi Monk, homemade pesto, Tower Grove farmer’s market, Hell Night/Cathedral Fever split cassette + t-shirt, BBQ slinger at Vernon’s.

Harsh truth. Having "Livin' On The Edge" by Aerosmith stuck in your head is a sad and sometimes unavoidable byproduct of having been alive in 1993.

Friday, August 7, 2015

august seventh

Five for August 7th:

Jon Stewart’s final Daily Show. I honestly don’t think I would have survived the Bush administration without this guy.

Mom. The good news: There is minimal (if any) damage to her unit or her belongings, and she’s got a sweet (suite?) hotel lined up while her building is getting fixed up. The bad news: no one knows how long that will take for that to happen. Still, overall, it could have been much worse.

Haro ’85 framesets. Haro is rolling out a drool-inducing limited run of classic 1985-era frames, including a red Blyther FST, blue Wilkerson Sport, and green Nourie Master. If only I were a rich man.

Cool stuff. New Greedo, paying off the credit card, night drums, firing up the grill, playing in the attic, retracing the steps of Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, closing down Webster Groves skatepark, lunchtime BMX sesh.

Weekend action. Pop the Board art show at Space this evening followed by Hell Night at Fubar, possible trip to the Zoo and/or Turtle Park, Mercs at Tap Room, Heavy Metal Brunch at Crow’s Nest, hanging out with family and friends, mowing the lawn.

Thursday, August 6, 2015

august sixth

Five for August 6th:

Smoked out. Send some good vibes my mom’s way: a week after she was more or less forced out of her place for two days due to a power outage, yesterday afternoon her building actually caught fire. Hoping we can get everything squared away and get her back in there soon. What a massive bummer.

Pure Fun. The 25th anniversary issue- to which I am very much honored to have contributed an article- is coming out this weekend with a three-day series of accompanying events, including a skate jam and a movie night with Mike V. If you live anywhere within 200 miles of Lockport and you miss this then don’t bother calling yourself a skateboarder.

Holes in my shoes. All of them.

Cool stuff. Jon Stewart’s send-off from Louis C.K., crumb cake, 4 Skateboarding Events the Olympics Can Have, summer lager, Dan Lacey Above Below part.

Tonight. Webster Groves sunset sesh with Andy and whoever else trickles out of the woodwork.

Wednesday, August 5, 2015

august fifth

Five for August 5th:

Black Fast. Their new album Terms of Surrender is streaming on Noisey. Play loud.

Skate every day. Quick, sweat-infused lunchtime curb jam yesterday, potential Ramp Riders session tonight and/or Webster tomorrow with the old man crew.

Catching up. Mostly up to speed on emails and other work-related insanity, lawn is mowed, weeds are whacked, bags are unpacked, mail is sorted, and at least one-third of the groceries we need are bought.

Cool stuff. Hetfield the Cat, Bourne trilogy on DVD completed, 22 years ago today Nolan Ryan beat the shit out of Robin Ventura, new Jaws/Bronson Speed Co clip, chori pollo.

Hoverboards. The world is over the hoaxes and the almost-works. Make a functional hoverboard- and until you do, shut up about it.

Tuesday, August 4, 2015

august fourth

Five for August 4th:

Summer vacation 2015. Spent the last nine-ish days in the mountains of Colorado (and the Holiday Inns of Kansas) with Lisa, Jane, George, and other family. Super fun and mostly-relaxing time filled with trail hiking, fishing, hanging out in various parks, riding go-karts, and eating awesome food. As with all vacations, it was over before it started. Alas. More pics on Instagram.

Back in the saddle. Digging back in at the office this morning, which isn’t much of a chore given all my work was for the most part done for me while I was out (thanks Denise!). Some coffee, donuts, and and a new CPU and we’re off.

Driving with kids. Note to self: minimize future attempts to do 1800 mile round-trip car trips with a 2.5 year old that can’t sit still/be quiet and a 2 month old that needs to nap constantly.

Cool stuff. Lawson Skatepark in Estes Park, Patrick Kelly - Have Fun, Ride Bikes, Chris Miller on Welcome, new issue of Thrasher, new Dan’s Comp catalog, Bob & Tony’s pizza, cheap Vision Jinx, Colorado koozie, Dale's Pale Ale, Van Doren Invitational footage.

Tuesday soundtrack. Danava, Hour 13, Pentagram, Black Fast, Husker Du, Youth of Today, Shiner, The Damned.
