september thirtieth

Five for September 30th:

September. This month blew by in a heartbeat, as did all of summer. It’s definitely starting to feel like fall out there.

Fear the Walking Dead. While I dig the show and am interested in seeing where it goes, I think it squandered a lot of potential by not showing a more gradual breakdown of civilization with a heavier emphasis on daily survival in the wake of an epidemic- which is really what everyone hoped it would be. Instead we just got this uninteresting flash-forward to a fenced-in pseudo police-state. Squandered, I tell you.

Interesting question. Has the skateboard industry lost touch with the everyday skater? Answer: yes. Better question: who really cares?

Cool stuff. Welcome team at Woodward West, Snakewoods last call, friends and family night at Jane’s preschool, proper BMX parenting, bacon and gouda breakfast sandwich, Nardonzo, Sanders touts 1 million online donations.

You learn something new every day. Apparently Josh Brolin was the drummer for Rich Kids on LSD at one point. Who knew?

september twenty-ninth

Five for September 29th:

Sick baby blues. George has had a gnarly cough for a few days and started swatting at his ear over the weekend, and sure enough, poor little dude has an ear infection. Hopefully some antibiotics will get him better soon.

Seems strange. I sure am seeing a lot of people who are usually pretty verbal in their support of things like marriage equality, abortion rights, and access to contraception gushing about Pope Francis lately.

Karma’s a bitch. I guess this is just what happens when you move into a neighborhood and open a restaurant charging almost $5 for a bowl of Frosted Flakes.

Cool stuff. New issue of Decibel on my desk, casserole, Juice Magazine Henry Gutierrez interview, CNN Grills Ben Carson So Hard on His Islamaphobia His Manager Has To End The Interview, morning roll, Kamen Rider and Kikaider shirts from Anju, freshly-designed Powell hoodies.

Tuesday soundtrack. Dillinger Four, Voivod, Grand Funk, Refused, Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Smiths.

Monday, September 28, 2015

september twenty-eighth

Five for September 28th:

George. Our little dude is four months old as of yesterday. It’s awesome to watch him grow every day and develop his own little personality. Definitely one of the two coolest kids ever.

Dillinger Four. This Saturday at Firebird. Haven’t seen them since the old Creepy Crawl days, at least a decade ago. Also playing are the Humanoids who I also haven’t seen in way too long. Be there, unless you hate good music.

Party in the park. Another one in the books. Good times hanging out with the neighborhood crew, enjoying the mega-mild weather and watching Jane throw down like never before.

Cool stuff. Work coffee restock, Iron Maiden A Matter of Life and Death shirt, Keith Richards Under the Influence on Netflix, blueberry waffles, new Bruce Dickinson interview, Cultivate: Volume 1.

Enough already. Any store with Christmas shit out in late September has earned themselves a minimum two-month boycott. I’m not even kidding- I won’t have this crap shoved down my throat while I’m still wearing shorts every day.

september twenty-fifth

Five for September 25th:

Friday. Couldn’t have come soon enough. This week has been insane. Need some time away from this desk, and stat.

The cognitive dissonance is astounding. Jeb Bush stated that his interest in hearing what the Pope had to say would be limited to matters of faith: “I don’t get economic policy from my bishops or my cardinals.” I see. So when it comes to ECONOMIC issues, the church needs to stay out of it- but when it comes to things like equal rights, women's rights, etc? THEN you're all ears and their stance should be hard and fast government policy. Screw these people.

Working out. Renewed my Club Fitness membership after a summer of not bothering with it. Going to try to hit the Loop location mid-day a couple times a week- perhaps a lofty goal, but working out in the mornings or evenings these days is almost impossible.

Cool stuff. $15 Assault Harbour punk point decks, Boehner is resigning soon, From Skater to Artist: The Ongoing Evolution of Ed Templeton, VHS Skate Theater: Radical Moves Part 1, homemade burritos, Fox - Lima Eltham 2015, How A Little Lab In West Virginia Caught Volkswagen's Big Cheat.

Weekend action. Hanging out with the family, Clifton Heights party in the park, skateboarding with friends, mowing lawns, stair repair, coffee consumption, not working.

Thursday, September 24, 2015

september twenty-fourth

Five for September 24th:

Last night. While Lisa was taking care of business with her first (very successful) online R+F event, I was falling asleep at on the couch watching Hogan’s Heroes at 8 pm. A good balance of success and sloth.

Label Kills. Jason Adams is back on Black Label after a couple of years on Elephant and a (very short) stint on Thee Teenaged, which I am not sure is even still a thing. All is right with the skate world once again.

This (work) week. Ready for it to be over, done with, never to return.

Cool stuff. Watch The Warriors Recreate Their Last Subway Ride Home, Steve Caballero Pro-Tec interview, Seoul Taco with Tom, The twenty most progressive signature BMX frames, crock pot pulled pork.

CHP. Post-dinner walk to the park with Jane (and Yoda) for a half hour or so of climbing, swinging, and balance-bike riding with pretty much every other neighborhood kid. Always a good way to close out a work day.

Wednesday, September 23, 2015

september twenty-third

Five for September 23rd:

Fall. Pros: low humidity, mild weather, good holidays, jackets/hoodies. Cons: end of DST, ushers in the dreaded winter, turns St. Louis from lush and green to depressing and gray seemingly overnight.

George. Seems like he’s taking pretty well to the new crib, which is great, and Jane hasn’t made a peep about not having it in her room anymore, which is even better.

Seoul Taco. Steak Gogi bowl with Kimchi rice in t-minus 30 minutes.

Cool stuff. New Dan’s Comp catalog, fresh pack of Sharpies, the man behind a mysterious miniature town, trains for Jane, 2015 BMX SOS Classic photo gallery.

Not fooling anyone. I am seeing an unsettling number of people online this morning pretending they knew Yogi Berra was still alive.

Tuesday, September 22, 2015

september twenty-second

Five for September 22nd:

Star Wars. If the rumors of Disney re-releasing the original, un-fucked with, un-digitally "enhanced" Star Wars trilogy are true, I will burn my special edition DVDs and put the fire out with my own pee.

Behind the scenes with Bernie Sanders. Three days in Iowa that explain why Hillary’s fading and the Dems have a new front-runner.

Werk. The inmates are running the asylum this week. Unfortunately the inmates are still drastically shorthanded.

Cool stuff. iPhone photo dump, coffee cards, morning sesh, catching up on Fear the Walking Dead tonight, Chrome Ball Jerry Hsu interview.

Tuesday soundtrack. Pentagram, Electric Wizard, Tilts, AC/DC, Operation Ivy, Justice.

Monday, September 21, 2015

september twenty-first

Five for September 21st:

Tell me something I didn’t know. “Donald Trump is the new face of white supremacy,” says hate crime expert.

Eckert’s. Jane had a blast going down huge inflatable slides, jumping around in the bounce house, feeding livestock, climbing around on everything, riding ponies, and scarfing kettle corn. I think we managed to pick some apples somewhere in there as well.

Skating. Took full advantage of the southern California-esque weekend weather with a skate session at JB followed up with another at Webster on Saturday. Heavy on the fun, light on the soaked clothing.

Cool stuff. Jason in STL, jar of apple butter, Contemporary home design catching on in St. Louis city, Forest Park balloon race from our front porch.

End of an era. Never will we put Jane to bed in her crib again: it has been officially moved to George’s room and replaced- to Jane’s delight- with a play tent. While I’m super glad she has taken so well to her bed, I have to admit it sort of makes me sad.

Friday, September 18, 2015

september eighteenth

Five for September 18th:

Happy birthday Josh. My little brother, who as far as I’m concerned is still 8 years old, turns 35 today. Life is weird sometimes.

Required reading. Dissolve The United States, Court Affirms Your Right To Scrawl "Fuck Your Shitty Town" On Speeding Tickets Received In Shitty Towns, Irving Police Chief Admits Cops Knew Ahmed Mohamed Didn’t Have a Bomb But They Arrested Him Anyway, 9/11 responders bill defeated by Senate GOP filibuster.

Denise’s last day. Massive pot luck at work to celebrate/send off the coolest boss and co-worker anyone has ever had anywhere. It surely won’t ever be the same again around here.

Cool stuff. New episode of South Park, morning curbslides, AC/DC on Spotify, Ikea friends and family pass, getting paid, Is Agent Smith really The One in 'The Matrix' trilogy?

Weekend action. Hell Night at Firebird, apple picking at Eckerts, hanging out with Jason and crew, skate session or two, lawn care, quality time with the kid brigade.

Thursday, September 17, 2015

september seventeenth

Five for September 17th:

Birthdays. Generally speaking, they’re not so interesting once you get into your thirties- but when you have a kid who gets as excited about them as Jane does, you can’t help but be into it. Thanks to everyone for the awesome 38.

Feel the Bern. The Biggest Winner Of The CNN Republican Debate Was Bernie Sanders, Bernie was never going to win over Liberty U. He was giving Democrats a preview of his leadership, An Evangelical responds to Sanders’ speech at Liberty University.

Gift horse. Hand-painted rock from Jane, Assault HMC guest deck, Starbucks and Lowes gift cards, fifty bucks, brownie cake.

Cool stuff. Haro DMC Master video from Interbike, morning bagels and drum talk, Plastic Galaxy: the Story of Star Wars Toys on Hulu, free lunch, afternoon flatland, Armageddon is Here: GOP Christian Fundamentalists See Photo of Deputy and Marine Getting Married, Top 10 Playstation 1 RPGs.

Late finish. Started this list at 9 o’clock this morning and am finishing it at 4:15. How’s that for expediency?

Wednesday, September 16, 2015

september sixteenth

Five for September 16th:

Getting old. I guess this is what 38 looks like.

Haro tribute series. Hot on the heels of the recent slew of 80’s-era Freestyler reissues, Haro just announced the drool-inducing 2016 Dennis McCoy Master-the best one so far. It’s a good thing I’m broke.

Skate raging. Hit Ramp Riders for a session last night with Andy, Jason, Brian and Rich. First time there in a long time. It was fun, but they need to re-layer that mini ramp something fierce. That thing is destroyed.

Cool stuff. Homemade birthday card from Jane, Kenner’s abandoned 1985 Star Wars toy line, The 10 Best Front Brake Riders of All Time, Ranchito with Tom, The Warriors Come out to Play in Coney Island One Last Time.

Irving ISD. These fucking idiots all need to be sued into bankruptcy and never allowed near children again.

Tuesday, September 15, 2015

september fifteenth

Five for September 15th:

Date night. Lisa and I actually went out sans-children for the first time in four months last night, for an early birthday dinner of tapas and sangria at Modesto. I had forgotten what it was like.

BMX Plus! Pour one out for Radical Rick: After 37 years, the longest-surviving BMX magazine on the planet is shutting their doors. What a bummer.

Jane’s list of favorite things for school. Includes Ted Drewes, slimy frog, bunny states, meatballs, and Henry.

Cool stuff. Ramp Riders session tonight, Profile: Mark Mulville 2015, Neil Young snubs Donald Trump, gives “Rockin’ in the Free World” to Bernie Sanders.

Tuesday soundtrack. Jawbreaker, King Diamond, Teen Idles, Electric Frankenstein, Danzig, The Germs, Them Crooked Vultures.

Monday, September 14, 2015

september fourteenth

Five for September 14th:

Weekend weather. Windows open, hoodies on, no humidity, sun shining, low bug factor, breezy and awesome. Why can’t it be like this year-round?

Mary and Keith. Bastards beat us to the punch on buying a camper. We’ll see who gets the last laugh.

Vacation fever. This week in 2011 we hanging out in New Orleans drinking hurricanes and eating beignets, and this week last year we were strolling the sun-drenched beaches of Gulf Shores, AL. Currently sitting at my desk.

Cool stuff. Early birthday shout-out from Cat on Emotional Rescue, Sick Boys full video, donuts and coffee with CH neighbors, Adam’s smokehouse, Lost in Transition: Blaize Blouin, Ryan Nyquist NBD, sundae Saturday with Jane, morning curbslides, George is a better dresser than I am.

Skating. Didn’t get much over the weekend, but managed a few quick curbslides on the way in this morning and have a potential Ramp Riders session cooking for tomorrow evening.

Friday, September 11, 2015

september eleventh

Five for September 11th:

Last night. Lisa’s R+F shindig was, by all accounts, a smashing success- and I somehow survived my first night alone managing a toddler and an infant at the same time. Drinks all around.

Time is almost up. You all realize that Michael Bay's self-imposed "too soon" moratorium on making an overblown 9/11 CGI action/romance epic is almost over, right? Worst case scenario is the fifteen year mark. Best case is twenty. Either way, we all lose.

Spotify. Finally reinstalled it on my computer after a couple of weeks of being too busy to mess with it and hitting the breaking point with my stale old iPod.

Cool stuff. New Hosoi Hammerhead, leftover wine, mid-morning flatland jam, Madness at Mancha’s, salt & vinegar chips, how to disguise your DIY, good VHS camcorder and Splice app updates.

Weekend action. No major plans, save for spend as much time outdoors enjoying the mild weather as possible. Wouldn’t rule out a skating/riding session or two, ice cream date with Jane, or back-porch hangin’.

Thursday, September 10, 2015

september tenth

Five for September 10th:

Launch party. The good: tonight is Lisa’s Rodan + Fields business kickoff party at Rung, and you should all go because it will be a rad time. The bad: a last-minute nanny cancellation today means I won’t be able to attend, which is definitely a bummer.

School days. Jane officially started her first day of preschool this morning. Words cannot begin to describe how proud I am of this kid.

Paul Dianno. His final gig with Iron Maiden was 34 years ago today. Have they done anything since?

Cool stuff. Machu Picchu photos, Sanders surges past Clinton in new Iowa poll, iPhone photo dump, Homo naledi, Turkey Tom, Key and Peele series finale.

Lost in Transiton. I know I keep talking about this series but it truly just rules. New episode “the Charleston Hanger” is up and stoke-inducing.

Wednesday, September 9, 2015

september ninth

Five for September 9th:

DST. Two months left of glorious sunshine into the evenings, even if it’s already starting to dwindle. Get it while you can.

eBay. Their new app is a pile of complete dogshit. Depressingly terrible. A step so far backward it would almost be funny if it wasn’t an app I used so often. I don’t know what the hell they’re thinking. I wish I’d never hit “update”.

Vernon’s. The reuben can't be topped, even though I passed on it today in favor of the beef brisket. What're you gonna do?

Cool stuff. Good first day of preschool for Jane, bag of peanut M&Ms, new Sword and Cerebral Ballzy records on Spotify.

Too busy to blog. There you have it.

Tuesday, September 8, 2015

september eighth

Five for September 8th:

Big girl. Janey had her preschool orientation today and will be officially starting this week, albeit on a part-time basis. I cannot get over how quickly she’s growing up.

3-day weekend. Fun one. Highlights included drinks and Strange Donuts on the back porch with Mary and Keith, Turtle Park and Mr. Lizard’s with the kiddo, early morning solo skate sesh at JB, hitting up Tower Grove, and soaking in the (unofficial) last weekend of summer.

Self-control. I seriously had to battle back the urge to pick up the insane 48” Star Wars Darth Vader from Target over the weekend. The only reason I didn’t is because there is literally no practical place to put it- and I don't need more useless crap cluttering my life. That said, I may have to go back for one of the cheaper (but equally awesome) 31” First Order Stormtroopers.

Cool stuff. George is rolling over, Lost in Transition: Skate Zone, Lucky’s Market, new (free) sunglasses, Hosoi Hammerhead, From Malaga to Gran Canaria, new pack of mechanical pencils, Seinfeld on Hulu.

Tuesday soundtrack. Iron Maiden, ALL, Reagan Youth, 7 Seconds, Van Halen, Motorhead, The Smiths, McRad, The Sword.

Friday, September 4, 2015

september fourth

Five for September 4th:

Up the Irons. Iron Maiden’s Book of Souls is released today. Been streaming it all morning and it rules- definitely the best thing they’ve put out since Dance of Death- possibly since Seventh Son. I’ll be picking up a physical copy later.

I don’t get it. Grown-up men and women are talking passionately about footballs that may have not had enough air in them and how people should be fined thousands of dollars/lose jobs over them. Actual adults.

Sign the petition. Make Bigoted Clerk Follow God’s Law, Be Stoned For Adultery. Come on, Kim. You’re not afraid to put your money where your mouth is, are you?

Cool stuff. Adventures of SuperJane and SuperGeorge, Key & Peele Hollywood Sequel Doctor, Lost in Transition: the Band X pool, getting paid, popcorn Friday.

Three-day weekend action. Hell Night and Mutoid Man at Fubar, Anchovy’s garage sale, hanging out with the crew, skate/BMX sessions, Fear the Walking Dead, not working, labor day back porch barbecues.

Thursday, September 3, 2015

september third

Five for September 3rd:

Seoul Taco. Steak Gogi bowl with Kimchi rice and a Send Help? Yes please. Also, best restroom artwork anywhere.

eBay Watch. The May/June segment is up and features some top-shelf awesomeness, including a rare Santa Cruz Special Edition “fish” model, which a childhood friend in my neighborhood had and was perhaps the first non-department store board I ever rode.

Rough week for Jane. She’s in better spirits than I would be following a week consisting of a mosquito bite onslaught, emergency trip to the dentist, and getting fingers accidentally squeezed in the closet door. Handling it like the trooper she is.

Cool stuff. The pig is in the sty, Super Golden Crisp, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on Netflix, Donald Trump insult generator, Bruce Air to Paris to hear The Book of Souls.

Salad Days. Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC is on Hulu, effective today. Definitely on my must-watch (sson) list.

Wednesday, September 2, 2015

september second

Five for September 2nd:

Eaten alive. Jane was hanging out with me in the backyard last night while I was mowing the lawn and received no less than 10 mosquito bites in the few minutes we were out there, including a couple on her face and one behind her ears. Poor girl.

Lost in Transition. Episode one, the Ranch Ramp, went live last night and is completely awesome. Watch it immediately.

La Croix Cúrate Pomme Bayá. And now, nothing else will suffice.

Cool stuff. New Haro ’86 raglan jersey, free sample pair of Dubs earplugs, GT in KC: Bleeding Kansas, morning hang-outs with George, bacon & gouda breakfast sandwich.

Early riser. I don’t know what’s been going on lately, but I’ve been waking up around 5 am every day for the last few weeks. It’s not necessarily throwing me off in any way, but it just doesn’t make any sense. I guess if anything it just gives me a little extra time in the morning to watch old skate videos and drink coffee.

Tuesday, September 1, 2015

september first

Five for September 1st:

September. Highlights will include a new Iron Maiden double album, Jane starting preschool, Lisa’s R+F launch party, and my 38th (wtf) birthday. Should be a fun one.

Crippled by drizzle. This city needs to grasp how to drive with a tenth of an inch of water on the ground. Every conceivable route home last night was backed up a mile because the roads were wet. It’s really not that difficult.

Fear the Walking Dead. One episode in and it definitely lives up to the hype. Ominous and foreboding without going over the top. Stoked for more.

Cool stuff. Asiago bagel, unsolicited Haro stickers in the mail, Uncontainable: behind the scenes, Under the Influence- Riding Opposite, part 1, root beer.

Tuesday soundtrack. Mutoid Man, Blind Faith, Dio, the Hives, Shadows of Knight, Devo. Mushuganas, the Who, Naked Raygun.
