october thirtieth

Five for October 30th:

Solo night. Last night was my first evening managing two kids through dinner and bedtime. Though not without its moments of nuttiness, we managed to make it through in one piece.

Box Brigade. This video makes me want to go work at Powell Peralta, which is not really that noteworthy as I’ve wanted to work at Powell Peralta since I was about 12 years old.

Tom’s last day. So long to my office next-door neighbor of the last two years. Celebrating with some free lunch action today. However, my buddy Brian starts full-time in that chair on Monday, which is rad.

Cool stuff. Getting paid, new issue of Thrasher in the mail, Schlafly Coffee Stout season, $25 Converse skate shoes at Marshalls, 24 Comments That Prove Ken M Is the Greatest Troll on the Internet, Epicly Later’d: Revisiting Kevin ‘Spanky’ Long.

Weekend action. Halloween party at a neighbor’s house, trick or treating with Elsa and the monster, Hell Night at the Demo, a skate session or two, raking leaves,

october twenty-ninth

No blog today. Meetings all day and leaving early to wrangle kids. See you tomorrow maybe.

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

october twenty-eighth

Five for October 28th:

George. The little guy turned 5 months old yesterday, and is celebrating by rolling all over the floor, getting a couple of new teeth in, and sleeping sporadically. It’s tough to be an infant.

Tattooing. 2016 is when I finally get some new work done, namely getting this dumb tribal thing I got when I was 18 turned into something less embarrassing (which is anything).

Kraftwerk. Footage of their first show in 1970 has surfaced on Youtube. Four songs in 48 minutes. Don’t sleep on it.

Cool stuff. La Pizza revisited, enterprising kid made a PowerPoint to convince his parents to let him play GTA, hoverboard Halloween costume, Sumatra re-up, body-slamming pig fired.

The Arch turns 50. Most major cities would never even consider decimating a quarter of their downtown waterfront business district to put a giant statue on, but what’s done is done. Hope everyone is enjoying those green spaces and Dolly Parton concerts.

october twenty-seventh

Five for October 27th:

Sick kid. The bad: Jane came down with a fever yesterday. The good: all she wanted to do last night was sit on the couch with my arm around her and watch Cinderella.

Bicycle Motocross. BMX Bandits- a criminally underrated staple of my childhood and a movie more people need to know about- gets some much-deserved 2015 tribute love. If you do nothing else today, watch this video.

JD McPherson. Haven’t seen him since his Blueberry Hill show a few years back, and am considering making a rainy Tuesday evening trek to Off Broadway tonight.

Cool stuff. Egg McMuffin, finally started the new Walking Dead, Catty Woods Halloween jam, Willis Kimbel product pillage, gyro grill, Richer Poorer Jason Adams interview.

Tuesday soundtrack. Tom Petty, the Faction, Band of Horses, Thin Lizzy, King Diamond, Beastie Boys.

Monday, October 26, 2015

october twenty-sixth

Five for October 26th:

Fun weekend. Rad weather, pumpkin carving, going to the park, brunch with friends and neighbors, playing some drums, hanging out with the goobers. Can’t beat it.

Crail Couch. Been my early-morning ritual for a week or so now. So much good stuff to watch, and I’ve barely cracked into them.

DST. One week left. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Cool stuff. October photo dump, insane new Jordan Hoffart part, rare Monty Nolder footage, snickerdoodles, free pick packs, The Flash on Netflix, Creach Tube.

Skating. Another practically skate-free weekend in the books, but I did manage to squeeze in an hour or so at Webster on Saturday morning with a potential Ramp Riders session in the works for some evening this week.

Friday, October 23, 2015

october twenty-third

Five for October 22nd:

Don’t come over. As I type this, the following is happening within 50 feet of our house: our neighbors are moving out (two giant moving trucks), Laclede Gas is ripping up parts of the sidewalk to replace gas lines (all manner of utitlity/construction vehicles), and the house two doors down is replacing their driveway (giant dumpster full of rubble, assortment of large trucks and bulldozers, giant piles of gravel).

Current setups. Assault HMC, 1031 Danforth, Powell Welinder. What’s my deal with green decks these days?

George rules. The chilliest and sweetest kid in the universe. Smiles (and cheeks) for miles. Love when I get to spend some quality time with him in the mornings.

Cool stuff. Friday curbslides, beef and barley soup, more Rumble in Ramona footage, Someone is trolling Kellogg's with brutal fake Frosted Flakes ads, Company to Offer $1 Alternative to Cancer Pill Hiked 5,000%, Dungen on Spotify, John Cusack Has Nothing Against Better Off Dead, Days of the Shaggin' Wagon: A Look at 1970s Custom Vans.

Weekend action. Not much planned save for a potential skate session at MoFo and a friend’s kid’s 3rd birthday party. What’s happening?

Thursday, October 22, 2015

october twenty-second

Five for October 22nd:

Everything Sucks. If it were an ALL album instead of a Descendents album, this is what it would sound like. Beyond awesome that this thing exists. Play loud.

BTTF Day. It got overblown yesterday to the point that I was annoyed with it by the time I got to work- but even I have to admit this is pretty damn awesome.

Must watch. Greyson Fletcher In Perdition, A Washington Summer, most of John Cardiel’s best footage in one edit.

Cool stuff. New Powell “Geegah” Ripper reissues, afternoon cruise, Paul Ryan's request for family leave has critics crying hypocrite, catching up with DK.

Awesome weather. Short sleeves and shorts, backyard BBQ’ing, taking Jane to the park, and sleeping with the windows open the week before Halloween is something I can fully get behind.

Wednesday, October 21, 2015

october twenty-first

Five for October 21st:

Father’s night. Threw cotton balls at spider webs, made a ghost-in-a-cup, banged on instruments, designed a picture frame, and got to spend the evening hanging out with my awesome kid.

Indian summer. 78 degrees and sunny at the end of October? Sign me up.

Back to the Future Day. Maybe Marty McFly and Doc Brown can use some of that nuclear waste from the Bridgeton landfill to fly their DeLorean out of my Facebook feed.

Cool stuff. Doyle at the Ready Room, JD McPherson at Off Broadway, salted caramel Greek yogurt, Redd Kross on Spotify, baseball card vandals, lunch with Tom.

Around the house. Finally got the light switch in the dining room replaced and the plumbing in the downstairs bathroom fixed, which means we have consistent hot water (and decent water pressure) for the first time since moving in.

Tuesday, October 20, 2015

october twentieth

Five for October 20th:

First tooth. George is officially teething, as of yesterday, with the tip of a single little tooth poking up from his bottom gums. He’ll be scarfing down sandwiches in no time.

Star Wars. The newest Force Awakens trailer is online and will surely give chills to even the most casual fan of the original franchise (and hope to all those who despise the prequels, which is everyone). Speaking of, there’s a group of morons apparently boycotting the movie because there’s a black guy in it. Guess they've never seen any of the other ones.

Tonight. Dad & daughter night at Jane’s preschool. Any evening I get to spend with my girl is a good evening.

Cool stuff. New office chair, Skatevisions full video on Youtube, berry cobbler oatmeal, 'Joel Oldsteen' trolls Joel Osteen on Facebook, stop n' pop.

Tuesday soundtrack. Mercyful Fate, Descendents, Agent Orange, Voivod, Tommy Guerrero, Deep Purple.

Monday, October 19, 2015

october nineteenth

Five for October 19th:

DST. Twelve days remaining until the world goes dark. Enjoy it while you can.

Skating. Most of this weekend’s meager skateboarding action was limited to screwing around on the driveway, although I did manage to squeeze a few kickturns in at Webster on the way to the hardware store.

The next ground zero. Potential “Nuclear Fallout” Imminent As Radioactive Waste Sets to Burn in Missouri, and No One Cares.

Cool stuff. Ishod Wair's Berrics 'Push' Part, work snack restock, Ranchito with Brian and Seth, My Dad, Gene Simmons, Is Full of Shit and So Are You, Bernie Sanders Met Sandra Bland's Mom And Didn't Tell Anyone, yogurt popsicles with Jane.

Meeting Hell. Another day of new-system meetings and new-dude training means another late entry. At least I didn't completely skip it this time.

Friday, October 16, 2015

october sixteenth

Five for October 16th:

Oil change. First one in line at Valvoline at 7:00 this morning? This guy right here. I’m officially turning into my grandpa.

Sleep training. Starting now for George. Lots of work to do, but when we did it with Jane it (quite literally) changed our lives for the better in ways we couldn't have ever fathomed.

Work. It’s way less of a bummer when you get to basically listen to music and hang out with a bunch of friends all day. In addition to Seth sitting right behind me, by friend Brian starts Monday and will be at the desk right next to mine. Shenanigans shall ensue.

Cool stuff. Popcorn Friday, Powell “Coffin” deck with new set of Mini-Logo 169s, 81-Year-Old Grandpa Plugs In Guitar, Stuns Entire Shop Staff, Brand-X reborn, free Wedgie ergo drum key, 2015 Haro FST completes, Ermahgerddon: The Untold Story of the Ermahgerd girl.

Weekend action. Clifton Heights neighborhood garage sale, Tre Serpenti at Cicero’s, potential family reunion out in the country, hanging with the goobers, running errands, skatepark attack.

Thursday, October 15, 2015

october fifteenth

Five for October 15th:

George. Little dude probably had his best night of sleep last night since exiting the womb, going for a whole uninterrupted six-hour stretch and giving Lisa some much-needed z’s.

Earliest draft of King James Bible found. “The King James Bible was produced by six teams of translators, known as “companies,” who were charged with creating an authorized version that would support the Church of England against the Puritan influence seen in some earlier translations.” That, my friends, is not a “translation”- it’s propaganda, plain and simple.

Taters forever. Some really nice tributes from Thrasher and The Ride Channel on the man, myth, and legend.

Cool stuff. My girl, new issue of Ride BMX, Vision Barge at Will on Youtube, Shred for Shockus 2015, free Imo’s, lunch with Lisa, morning solo skate sesh.

Thursday soundtrack. Big Drill Car, Uniform Choice, Splatcats, Motorhead, Husker Du, Minutemen, Venom.

Wednesday, October 14, 2015

october fourteenth

No blog. In a daylong meeting today at work with no time for the luxuries of writing a post. See you tomorrow.

Tuesday, October 13, 2015

october thirteenth

Five for October 13th:

RIP Skatemaster Tate. Gone too soon. Go watch some SK8TV, jam some tunes and remember the good days. Fuck cancer.

Last night. Pizza picnic in the living room followed by an evening walk to the park with the birthday girl (and Elsa). Not too shabby for a Monday night.

Planet Score. I’ve driven by there a number of times wondering what the deal was, but it looks like this new Maplewood record store is on the verge of an official open. It’ll be rad to have (another) good record store nearby.

Cool stuff. Sleepy Kitty Mockingbird video, chicken tikka masala from Taj Mahal, coffee and curbslides, 15 Racist Confederate Flaggers Charged With Terrorism For Crashing Black Child’s Birthday,

Do or die. Either the Cards tie the series up tonight and take it back to Busch Stadium for game five, or the Cubs advance after wiping the floor with us the last two nights.

Monday, October 12, 2015

october twelfth

Five for October 12th:

Happy birthday Jane. Even though the party was yesterday, my amazing, beautiful daughter turns three years old today. Happy birthday to the coolest kid to ever walk the planet.

Cards/Cubs. Series tied at two after a Saturday night heartbreaker. Wrigley tonight. Who’s watching it where?

Fuck Columbus. If you’re looking for a reason (or many) not to be glorifying that piece of human shit, look no further. It’s time for this nationwide fantasy to end.

Cool stuff. Loaded Powell coffin deck, JB skate sesh with Andy and crew, The GOP sinks deeper into chaos, Students Plan To Open-Carry Dildos Over Controversial Texas Campus Gun Law, making soup for the Imperial Walker, Weekend at Uncle Jesse's, burned CD of new Hell Night.

With Bob and David. When I was a boy, a new Mr. Show spinoff series was just a beautiful dream. Now, it’s science fact!

Friday, October 9, 2015

october ninth

Five for October 9th:

Janey. I can’t believe my little goober is turning three next week. Seems like yesterday we were bringing her home from the hospital. Now she’s making me (play) breakfast and telling me about her Kandinsky paintings.

STL BMX. Awesome footage of last weekend’s trail jam at Figure 8. I wish I could have gone and checked it out in person. Represent!

Holly Golightly. Off Broadway in November. Be there.

Cool stuff. 29 Years Ago: Slayer Redefine Thrash With Reign in Blood, dinner at SoHa with the family, bizarre paintings of mecha robots attacking European peasants, guy builds a sweet house out of mud and sticks, Veranda blend on Autobrew, morning curb jam.

Weekend action. Backyard BBQ, Jane’s birthday party, Cardinals playoff games, early JB skate session, Oktoberfest at Seth’s, playing drums, enjoying the sunny, mid-17-degree weather.

Thursday, October 8, 2015

october eighth

Five for October 8th:

Cards vs. Cubs. Round one of the NLDS series starts tomorrow. The long-standing rivalry will make for some good watching. Fall is most definitely here.

Doomsday. I think yesterday was the fifth one I’ve lived through in my lifetime. Who can remember? Nonsense all tends to run together after 38 years.

Future Primitive. The next series of Bones Brigade reissues are due out in November and are amazing, especially that Lance Mountain and Tommy Guerrero. These guys are out to bankrupt me.

Cool stuff. Afternoon skate sesh, these eight cities just abolished Columbus Day, With Ben Carson, the Doctor Is Always Out, Ranchito with Tom, the House GOP just entered full meltdown mode.

Skatemaster Tate. Bummer news on the state of things for the former Sk8 TV host and seemingly all-around nice dude. Throw in if you can.

Wednesday, October 7, 2015

october seventh

Five for October 7th:

Earth’s last day. 11:30 AM: A little cloudy, but so far no blatant signs of the biblical apocalypse scheduled for today. Guess maybe the big guy is waiting till after lunch? In the unlikely event this prediction is incorrect, this blog will continue tomorrow as normal.

Alice Cooper. Last night, the original Alice Cooper band reunited for an impromptu show to 200 people at a Dallas record store. Sparse video trickling in, but that short clip of “Elected” is enough to send chills down the spine.

Ben Raybourn Push. Finally got around to watching the entire six-part series over the last few mornings. Totally worth checking out.

Cool stuff. Evenings at Clifton Park, Mike Portnoy Plays Classic Rock and Metal Songs Behind a Hello Kitty Drum Kit, spinach and sun dried tomato pizza, the Lure of the Lost City, solo morning with the kids.

Aldi rules. By the end of the year, Aldi will no longer carry items that contain certified synthetic colors, partially hydrogenated oils, and added monosodium glutamate. I can dig it.

Tuesday, October 6, 2015

october sixth

Five for October 6th:

This morning. Took Jane on her first-ever school field trip to the pumpkin patch, where we did a hayride, went through a haunted maze, saw a gigantic turkey, and played in not one but two sandboxes. Capped it off with a donut date at Tim Horton’s. Can’t beat it.

Registration Expiration Date: 2017-09-25. Weird that they’d register the domain on this website for two years knowing that the world is ending tomorrow. Seems like sort of a waste.

FTWD. The first season of Fear the Walking Dead ended (far too quickly) on Sunday with the best episode yet, giving me hope for the future after an intriguing but ultimately unsatisfying first few episodes.

Cool stuff. Assault punk point and sticker stack in the mail, oldest video footage of NYC, Stan Musial Rubik’s Cube portrait, Black Fast The Coming Swarm video, getting to work with friends.

Tuesday soundtrack. Wipers, Pere Ubu, The Faith, Void, Samhain, Jawbox, Television, Down By Law, early Metallica.

Monday, October 5, 2015

october fifth

Five for October 5th:

Move with the rogue set. Dillinger Four killed it at the Firebird to a packed house on Saturday night. Rad to see them after a decade-long hiatus, plus I ran into a bunch of friends I hadn’t seen in a long time. Win-win.

Down on the farm. Jane had a blast feeding the cows, eating straight out of the garden, harvesting pumpkins, and running around wreaking her usual havoc, capping the whole thing off with a sleepover. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss seeing her this morning.

Must-watch. Rumble in Ramona 5 footage, Ryan Nyquist Haro edit, Real Skateboards Through and Through video.

Cool stuff. Great Pumpkin season at Ted Drewes, setting up the Welinder, pie and cheese for dinner, finally got the curtains up in Jane’s room, JB/Webster skate sessions, George only woke up once last night.

Late bloggin’. Another busy day and start of the week means another too-late-for-anyone-to-care blog entry. What’re you gonna do?

Friday, October 2, 2015

october second

Five for October 2nd:

Autumnal. It’s straight-up cold outside. Nowhere near where it’s going to be, of course, but cold enough to make the house uncomfortable this morning. I’m already sick of it and it hasn’t even started yet.

Geared up. Jane made sure I had everything I'd need for the day in my pocket before leaving the house this morning.

“Somehow this has become routine”. Obama blasts Congress for failing America on gun control in his eleventh (!) speech on the subject. What the hell is it going to take?

Cool stuff. New issue of Thrasher in the mail, sheet of grip and OJ stickers from Future Sk8, getting paid, Ranchito with Tom and Craig, the Washington Post’s pathetic attempt to attack Bernie Sanders, Hackers is back on Netflix.

Weekend action. Dillinger Four at Firebird, heavy metal brunch, going out to the farm, Saturday morning skate session, Great Pumpkins at Ted Drewes, last lawn mow of the year?

Thursday, October 1, 2015

october first

Five for October 1st:

October. Right on schedule, the Cardinals clinch their third consecutive NL central on a Heyward grand slam and send us into playoff season. It wouldn’t be fall without it.

Star Wars. Jane loves hanging out in the attic playing with my Star Wars figures, and can now name almost every main character. She wants to watch the actual movies, but being that she’s still freaked out by Darth Vader and the Imperial Walkers, that might have to wait a couple of years. Either way, that’s my girl.

Road trip. Iron Maiden just announced their 2016 Book of Souls tour dates, and the closest they’re getting to STL is Chicago on April 6th. Sounds like a pretty good way to ring in the spring to me.

Cool stuff. George’s four-month picture, quick morning curb sesh, The Seylynn Story, Matt Hobbson Freewheelin’, beef brisket and tequila lime green beans, selling stuff on eBay, cleaning out closets.

Bottomless thumb drive. Many months and thousands of photos later, this $3.99 Target-endcap clearance Lexar thumb drive is still chugging away, eagerly accepting more GBs worth of pictures than could reasonably be expected.
