november thirtieth

Five for November 30th:

Long weekend. The weather was a bummer for the most part, but some good food, hanging out with friends and family, a rock show at Firebird and a fun skate session at Ramp Riders made up for the three days cold and drizzle.

Violent consumerism. Next year these people should consider staying home on Black Friday and killing themselves.

Colorado Springs. The Colorado Springs shooting epitomizes white privilege and the hypocrisy of pro-lifers, A White Male Terrorist Just Shot More People Than Refugees Have Since 9/11, Republican Candidates Are Too Busy This Morning to Denounce Attack on Planned Parenthood Clinic, Abortion Rights Leader Nails Hypocrisy Of Anti-Abortion Activists.

Cool stuff. MotionPortrait app, Ranchito with Aaron, Boys of Summer DVD rip, the second coming of the Nude Bowl, Jane the farm girl, new issue of Thrasher.

Around the house. Got a bunch of stuff done yesterday that I’d been putting off for months, which feels awesome given some of that stuff had been procrastinated on for so long that it had just started becoming accepted household landscape.

november twenty-fifth

Five for November 25th:

One year ago yesterday. Shit was going downhill in Ferguson so quickly and terribly that I had to turn off the news and watch a Brian Bosworth documentary on Netflix.

George. Our little dude will hit the half-year mark on Friday, and it shows. I estimate he’s about a week away from crawling, and he’s developing more and more of a little personality every day.

Pumpkin pie. One of many that will be consumed over the next few days just appeared on the table in our office. 'Tis the season.

Cool stuff. Jane’s preschool Thanksgiving pictures, $2 Stepbrothers DVD, Salba Bevel complete, new episodes of South Park, Ranchito with Brian and Tom.

Long weekend. A couple of scattered family get-togethers, Hell Night EP release at Firebird, a skate session or two, and whatever else comes along. Seeya Monday.

november twenty-fourth

Five for November 24th:

Southwest Diner. Fiery scramble, cup of Kaldi's and a copy of Thrasher is a good recipe for a Tuesday morning.

Feel the Bern. Bernie Sanders and Killer Mike grabbed lunch at a soul food restaurant yesterday in Atlanta. Meanwhile, on the other side of the aisle, Donald Trump is openly encouraging his supporters to rough up black people. There’s only one right side of this.

SoCal Skates. Picked up a new Powell Skull & Sword for ultra-cheap today by utilizing a combination of black Friday promo discounts, reduced free shipping, and some accumulated points. Sometimes it just all comes together.

Cool stuff. November iPhone photo dump, 15 years of Enjoi, fake Black Friday deals, Raditudes: We’re Not Dying Today, NYT Publishes Scathing Takedown of Trump’s ‘Racist Lies’, Habitat Inhabitants DVD loaner, evening tea parties with Jane.

John Oliver on refugees. “Let’s be honest here, every generation has had its own ugly reaction to refugees, whether they are the Irish, the Vietnamese, the Cubans or the Haitians, and those fears have been broadly unfounded. In fact, there was only one time in American history when the fear of refugees wiping everyone out did actually come true, and we’ll all be sitting around a table celebrating it on Thursday.”

november twenty-third

Five for November 23rd:

Three-day workweek. Or should I say upcoming four-day weekend? It’s a win either way you slice it.

Date night. Went to Dressel’s for a rare evening out with Lisa on Saturday. Some Stone Coffee Milk Stout, pretzel with rarebit, stock-pot soup, and conversation about stuff other than kids was just what the doctor ordered.

America 2015. This picture sums it up so perfectly it hurts. Also, in case you had lost track, Donald Trump's hatemongering has moved on to African-Americans.

Cool stuff. Insane Kevin Kowalski compilation, SuperJane, short and sweet Ramp Riders Saturday session, Sean Burns Ender Ender, What was it like to be a Nintendo game play counselor?

Yesterday. Took the van to Dobbs for some new front tires. I wrongly assumed if I got there early I’d be in and out. Turned out to be a four hour wait, so I grabbed some coffee, zipped up my hoodie and just walked the couple miles back home. Luckily the sun was out.

Friday, November 20, 2015

november twentieth

Five for November 19th:

Jane. Got her first official school picture back this morning. It blows my mind every day to watch her growing into this amazing little person. It’s happening too fast, but it’s the best thing ever and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

The RFT. Picked up a copy of the revamped Riverfront Times for the first time in a long while today and was legitimately impressed. I had written it off (the print version anyway) years ago, but it's perhaps better than ever now. Well done.

End of an era. Guy Mariano and Eric Koston leave Girl for parts unknown. People everywhere who take skating way too seriously are losing their collective shit.

Cool stuff. Kaldi’s, Therapists Confirm Trump's Narcissistic Personality Disorder, quebano sandwich at Vernon’s, In Wellston, a 'family reunion' explores faded riches, realities — and possibilities, 4,000 coins found in Roman treasure trove in Swiss orchard, donuts at work, Venom on Spotify.

Weekend action. Hanging out with the kids, Ramp Riders session, date night with Lisa, Doyle at the Ready Room, playing drums, drinking coffee, dreading winter.

november nineteenth

Five for November 19th:

Get it now. A couple more days of sun and mild-ish temperatures before a miserable weekend of rain and cold sets in. Four months till spring.

Street survivors. The gas line work that has been slowly snaking its way around the park toward our house finally arrived this morning, with full crew of workmen and all manner of construction trucks and digging apparatus blasting away at various sections of sidewalk. Hopefully they get it over with quickly with minimal damage.

Quote of the week. "In the wake of the Paris attacks, 25 republican governors have vowed to block all Syrian asylum seekers from entering their states, since ONE of the terrorists snuck into France with other Syrian refugees. In addition to being devoid of the most basic human integrity, that reaction is the height of right-wing hypocrisy- because whenever there is a domestic gun massacre, those same republicans are the first to insist you can't blame all the good gun owners for the acts of a few madmen." -Unknown

Cool stuff. Total Recall: Concussions and Carrot Bush, Bernie Sanders Rolling Stone interview, grilled cheese, pre-work curb sesh, watching Toy Story with Jane.

Wicker Man. Brian hipped me to this rare alternate mix of Iron Maiden’s Wicker Man with an amazing call-and-response chorus section that was inexplicably left off of the album version despite being awesome. Dig it.

november eighteenth

Five for November 18th:

Night shreds. Mega fun session at Ramp Riders last night with Andy, Brian and Rick. Two days of rain can’t put a damper on the gnar.

Gregg Turkington on Entertainment. “I’d like to see the tables turned a little bit so now they can feel the revulsion that I feel when I walk into Walgreens and Justin Bieber and Diplo’s music is blaring through the speakers, and I’m paralyzed with horror like, “Why do I have to fucking hear this? I’m just here to buy some Q-tips, and I have to listen to this fucking shit?”

Big kids. Jane is in like the 98th percentile for height for her age, and George is already in 12-17 month clothing and not even 6 months old yet. Is there something in the water?

Cool stuff. Ranchito with Tom and Craig, New Dan’s Comp catalog and issue of Skate Jawn zine, Ben Carson shattering stereotype about brain surgeons being smart, five-dollar 31” Star Wars Inquisitor, dreamsicle breakfast shakes.

Southwest Diner. How did I not think to just go there on occasional weekday mornings before work? Gonna have to start hitting it once a month or so. Way overdue on my fiery scramble and sopapilla fix, and weekends are out of the question these days.

Tuesday, November 17, 2015

november seventeenth

Five for November 17th:

Chowing down. George successfully ate his first solid food last night- some avocado, also a favorite of Jane’s around that age. Pretty sure I didn’t have an avocado until sometime after I had moved into my first apartment.

Pikazo. There have been a few moments in the history of modern technology that left me truly dumbfounded. Number one was when I saw Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on N64 for the first time. The second was the when a friend used Shazam on their iPhone to identify a song that was playing in a restaurant. The third is the astounding Pikazo app. Bonus: Made in STL!

Breakfast shakes. Lisa’s dark chocolate/cherry/spinach/protein concoctions are unbelievably awesome and healthier than something that tastes that good should be.

Cool stuff. 4-day weekend season, Facebook Top 30, home Sumatra roast restock, Heroin Skateboards Bath Salts premier photos, the Traveling Toaster, 'Star Wars: Despecialized Edition' Restores the Original, Unedited Trilogy, free box of Snark picks.

Tuesday soundtrack. Devo, Hellacopters, Motorhead, Rolling Stones, the Roots, No Means No, Rocket from the Crypt.

Monday, November 16, 2015

november sixteenth

Five for November 16th:

Last gasp of summer. Talk about an awesome weekend. Highs near 70, sun shining both days, windows open. For a couple weeks before Thanksgiving, I’ll take it.

John Oliver on the Paris attackers. “Fuck these assholes.”

W/ Bob and David. I was expecting it to be good, but I wasn’t expecting it to be that good. Watched all four episodes over the weekend and can honestly say it holds up as well or better than any classic Mr. Show episode.

Cool stuff. Hanging with George, Katie’s Pizza, Santa Cruz summer ’16 reissues, The Conversation: Robbie Russo & Jeff Grosso, Schlafly Pale Ale at Aldi, Anthony Bourdain eats Waffle House for the first time, loves it, Creature My Neighbor's Board.

Skate sesh. Awesome one on Saturday afternoon with Brian, Josh and a few others at JB. Radness went down, legs were sore, rock was discussed, coping was grinded.

Friday, November 13, 2015

november thirteenth

Five for November 13th:

One year ago today. We found out we’d be having a boy, hence completing the ultimate nuclear family (complete with dog and white picket fence). Today, he’s the real deal, and getting sweeter by the minute.

With Bob And David. The new Mr. Show spinoff premiers today on Netflix and the reviews thus far are good. There’s definitely some binge-watching about to happen.

The Loop Trolley. Costs have now climbed over the $51 million mark with no end in sight. “It’s disgraceful that that kind of money is being spent on a 2-mile amusement ride.”

Cool stuff. Friday the 13th, new Black Market deck from my brother, The Arrow, morning curbslides, Jane at the City Museum, 1987 - Del Mar Skate Ranch w/ Mike Smith.

Weekend action. Beautiful one coming up and little in the way of solid plans. Finish up the backyard, take the kids to some parks, skate a bit, ride a bit, Heavy Metal brunch, grill out, chill out.

Thursday, November 12, 2015

november twelfth

Five for November 12th:

Last night. The Brokeoffs played a super good show at Off Broadway to a small but enthusiastic crowd. The single opening band and quick set turnaround meant I was able to get home by 10:30 as an added weeknight bonus.

R.I.P. Philthy Animal Taylor. Go jam some classic Motorhead and pour one out for one of the all-time sloppy greats.

Report card. According to Jane’s preschool teacher, she is “very empathetic, often going to other kids when they fall down or patting them on the back if they’re crying at drop-off”. That’s my girl.

Cool stuff. New Independent Trucks hat, October photo dump, chori pollo, free Snark HZ-1 tuner and coaster set, donuts at work.

Johari Osayi Idusuyi. This woman is the best. If you do nothing else today, read this.

Wednesday, November 11, 2015

november eleventh

Five for November 11th:

Hypocrisy at its finest. I wonder how self-righteous Christian Starbucks trolls telling baristas their names are "Merry Christmas" reconcile that action with the fact that lying is a sin?

Zippy Burger. A+ on speed, and I sorta like the hyper-economical menu (single, double, fries, and drinks are the whole of it). The burger didn’t blow my mind, but for a quick Loop lunch option, I’m glad it’s there.

Shredding. Super fun last-minute session at Ramp Riders yesterday eve with Andy and Rick on the newly masonited mini ramp- talk about a world of difference. Picked up a new ten-pass heading into the cold months.

Cool stuff. Lawn bags, Ranchito with Tom and Brian, upcoming Santa Cruz Claus Grabke “turning back time” reissue, Powell winged ripper snapbacks, ass clown of the week, the abandoned buildings of the Eastern Bloc, So Cal plans with friends in January.

Holly Golightly. Tonight at Off Broadway. See you there, unless you’re lame and hate good music.

Tuesday, November 10, 2015

november tenth

Five for November 10th:

NAMM 2016. Looks like I’ll be California-bound come late January for my first music industry tradeshow in a few years. Weirdly looking forward to it, even though it will be a ton of work and a bummer to be away from the family for that long.

Over 40 Boarders. Great new local video featuring a bunch of STL skate friends and a lot of familiar spots. Mega gnarly.

Star Wars. Picked up a 31” Rebel Inquisitor figure on eBay last night for $4.99. That’s cheaper than just a normal Star Wars figure by like four bucks! Talk about a deal. It’ll look good in my office. Also: official Force Awakens TV spot is live.

Cool stuff. Kriss Kyle Kaleidoscope, take a tour of the last audio cassette factory in existence, afternoon freestyle session, Hiding in Plain Sight: The Story of the Missouri Jewelite Building, work coffee resupply, 3 Lessons From University of Missouri President Tim Wolfe’s Resignation, Dennis Enarson Haro SDV2.

Tuesday soundtrack. The Sword, ALL, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Greenhornes, Witchcraft, Electric Wizard.

Monday, November 9, 2015

november ninth

Five for November 9th:

Steve Caballero. Turned 51 yesterday and is still ripping, which gives me hope that I have at least 13 years of skating ahead of me. The search for Chin continues unabated.

Jane quote of the weekend. "This is the party of love, so you need to get in line."

BMX. Brought the Haro in today in the hopes of getting some parking lot flatland riding in this afternoon after a couple months off. Been missing it lately.

Cool stuff. These two, playing Candyland with Jane, blueberry breakfast biscuits, The 5 longest video game console life spans, Russian bus driver enjoys punishing drivers who cut him off, 3 Kings with Tom and Brian, Tim Wolfe resigns.

Skating. The whole crew was out in full force at JB on Saturday, taking advantage of the amazing weather. Also found out the mini at Ramp Riders is done being relayered, just in time for the winter skate season.

Friday, November 6, 2015

november sixth

Five for November 6th:

Friday morning. Woke up to a box of donuts from Donut Drive-In on the front porch, courtesy of Laura. Possibly one of the best apple fritters I’ve ever had (and not just because it was totally unexpected).

30 years of Bernie Sanders speeches. My friend Justin put it best: “How many contradictions would a look back at Hillary's statements from 1985 onward reveal? If you hate politics because of politicians, you finally have a chance to vote for the real deal.”

Shaving with clippers. It’s the best thing ever. You can shave in 2 minutes, have a perfect five-o’clock shadow, and never have to worry about razorburn or blotchy skin, to say nothing of the money you spend not buying razorblades. I haven’t close-shaved in almost a year.

Cool stuff. Much-needed new headphones for the e-drums, Disney Screens Star Wars: The Force Awakens For Terminally Ill Fan, Archaeologists To Ben Carson: Ancient Egyptians Wrote Down Why The Pyramids Were Built, caffeine cruise, Paradise Lost at the Moonhole Mansion: An Abandoned Crusoe Dream.

Weekend action. A couple of days of nice weather and few plans means hanging out with the kids, maybe a skate/bmx session or two, some raking of leaves and maybe a backyard BBQ while the gettin’ is still good.

Thursday, November 5, 2015

november fifth

Five for November 5th:

Crisis averted. Stupid thing at work that was keeping my up the last couple of nights trying to figure out how to fix turned out to fix itself. I’ll take that outcome anyday.

White Birch Park. Quick lunch sesh yesterday afternoon was rad. Had the place to myself. First time there, will definitely be back. Talk about a hidden gem.

Planet Score. The new record store in Maplewood finally opened this week. Talk about a rad shop- so much good stuff. These were in the $1.99 bin, for god’s sake.

Cool stuff. MC5 Detroit 1970, new Dan’s Comp catalog, 10 reasons to skate after 40, fun morning with the kids, Lost Bowl Invitational 2015 footage, new car iPhone charger.

Mi Ranchito. Giant bowl of chicken soup in t-minus two hours and counting.

Wednesday, November 4, 2015

november fourth

Five for November 4th:

I’ve been slimed. Went to toss out the moldering pumpkins sitting on our porch this morning and picked one up only to have it literally turn to goop in my hands. How that thing was even retaining its shape is beyond me. Had to hose off the porch after that debacle.

Bad Brains. An official statement on Dr. Know from the Bad Brains camp came down yesterday, making the rumors official. No news beyond that- hoping no news is good news.

Reissues. 101 is apparently re-releasing two holy grail decks- the highly-coveted Natas “devil worship” and Gabriel Rodrigues “Jesus” decks, both of which I’ll have to get as a pair, ‘cause that’s just how it works.

Cool stuff. Nigel Sylvester Go! NYC video, Kristian Svitak Kill the Kool, 75-degree November days, sheet of grip and new pair of knee pads from Future Sk8.

Good question. Why Does Anybody Play Football Anymore?

Tuesday, November 3, 2015

november third

Five for November 3rd:

Dr. Know. Word on the street is that Dr. Know from Bad Brains is currently in the hospital on life support and fighting for his life. Send some PMA his way.

Instagram. Hit the 7000-post mark as of this morning. Hope everyone likes pictures of kids and skateboards, ‘cause there’s plenty more to come.

Topics of discussion at work this morning. “Mean” Gene Okerlund’s net worth, the names of the four members of Nitro, which Megadeth songs belonged to which movie soundtracks.

Cool stuff. Skatemaster Tate at Kenter Canyon video, Santa Cruz Classic Dot Blonde Ale, $2.99 vinyl copy of Master of Reality, good leftovers, vitamins, shaving with clippers.

Tuesday soundtrack. Bad Brains, Alice Cooper, Helloween, Belle and Sebastian, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Jawbreaker.

Monday, November 2, 2015

november second

Five for November 2nd:

Halloween. The skies cleared up after a day of rain for a super fun and mild-temperatured (if not slightly damp) romp around the neighborhood. Jane had a blast, and George even hung in for most of it like a champ.

The end of DST. Major bummer as always, but a week of mid-to-high 70’s temps to kick off November makes it slightly easier to stomach. At least for now.

Ramp Riders. Hit it up for a couple hour session on Saturday with Andy, Chris and Jesse. The mini ramp is getting a much-needed relayering on November 5, just in time for the winter indoor skate season to get underway.

Cool stuff. Breakfast shakes, new Hell Night hoodie, leftover candy, Monday morning railslides, new episode of South Park, last CSA box of the year, Aldibrau sampler box, Thrasher Halloween Hellride 4 footage.

Forest Park in Fall. Sunday morning hiking trip through Forest Park was amazing. Nothing beats it. Go now before everything dies.
