december thirtieth

Five for December 30th:

Twenty-fifteen. Another year came and went in a flash, but what a year it was. George was born and is becoming an amazing little pre-toddler, Jane started preschool and is skyrocketing in height and personality, we managed to get in an awesome vacation to Colorado, and upgraded to a much-needed van. Bottom line: everyone is happy and healthy (if not a bit sleep deprived), and that’s all that matters.

More Lemmy. Lemmy Kilmister's Lifelong Embrace of Drinking, Smoking, Fucking, and Death Was an Example for Us All, Ozzy Osbourne Remembers Lemmy: 'He Was My Hero', Lemmy’s Last Days.

Dear St. Louis County. Building stuff in floodplains does not stop floodplains from being floodplains. Just FYI.

Cool stuff. Blockhead Splendid Eye Torture video on Youtube, Skatenerdstarmaps: Kenter Canyon Elementary with Eric Dressen, donuts and popcorn at work, Behind The Photo: Vic Murphy by Brad McDonald.

Long weekend, part deux. Hanging out with Greg tonight and building the new FST, George sleep training, taking Janey to the park, skating/riding (possible morning trip to Figure 8 trails?), and ringing in the new year by going absolutely nowhere. Seeya in ’16.

december twenty-ninth

Five for December 29th:

Killed by death. R.I.P. Lemmy- one of the last remaining rock n’ roll gods that will ever stride the Earth. I got to see Motorhead four or five times over the last couple decades, and each time was amazing. There will never, ever be another like that dude.

Everyone is sick. At work, at home, and online, everyone has some form of cold, flu, pneumonia, or otherwise. Guess it’s that time of year.

Skate sesh. Hit up Ramp Riders with Brian H and Andy for a much-needed couple hours of rolling around last night. Felt extra good after four days of oppressive rain and a solid schedule of holiday parties and the like.

Cool stuff. Backyard BBQ at Xavier’s ramp, An Open Letter to My Friends who Support Donald Trump, Zippy’s, How Roommates Turned a Brooklyn Studio Into a Two-Bedroom, Kenyan coffee and zucchini bread at Kayak’s, new issue of Decibel.

Tuesday soundtrack. All Motorhead, all day.

Monday, December 28, 2015

december twenty-eighth

Five for December 28th:

Xmas. Jane had the time of her life over the last few days jetting around to three separate parties, and even George managed to have a good time despite being sick with a cold. As is customary these days, the kids received more gifts than we (literally) know what to do with. Let the great winter sort-through begin.

Washed out. Spent the better part of the last three days in my basement, alternately sweeping pooled water into the sump pump with a broom, repositioning fans, and emptying dehumidifiers. Eff this weather.

Holiday haul. My new favorite mug featuring my two favorite mugs, hardcover copy of Judah Friedlander's If The Raindrops United, $75 worth of Starbucks gift cards, coffee press, cash money, peanut M&Ms.

Cool stuff. New 2016 Moleskine planner, Ron Allen is still ripping at 53, the Enarson Interview, how ‘zine makers are keeping skating’s underground alive, Planet BMX shirt/stickers, catching up on Walking Dead, limited edition 2016 flatland Master frame, possible Ramp Riders session.

2015 FST. Got my sweet new setup in the mail over the weekend. Hopefully getting together with Greg on Thursday to slap it together and do some riding. Just need to scrounge up four pegs and a detangler.

Wednesday, December 23, 2015

december twenty-third

Five for December 23rd:

This morning. Nothing like waking up to a nice, balmy 61° spring thunderstorm two days before Christmas. The good news is, Ted Cruz told me global warming was a hoax, so there's no need to be concerned.

We Are The Instigators. New Assault Skateboards video just dropped and it’s killer. Crack open a High Life, take five minutes and watch it.

Volume 2. Just got the official word that we’re having another fourr-day weekend next week, instead of the customary half-day on NYE. I think I can live with that.

Cool stuff. Sex and Skateboard Art with Sean Cliver, Tony Hawk completes from Daddy’s Home, Cult - Clubhouse Holiday Jam 2015, two boxes of donuts at work, Gary Young - Odyssey 30-15, new South Park.

Holiday weekend. Xmas morning with the kids, a seemingly endless stretch of family get-togethers, putting together the FST with Greg, a skate session or two, drinks with Scott at Royale, and whatever else trickles along. Seeya Monday.

Tuesday, December 22, 2015

december twenty-second

Five for December 22nd:

Top weekend Jane quotes. ”Baa baa black sheep, have you any soul?", "You have to get out of my cottage right now or I'll slap you. That's the English way."

Haro BMX. New 2015 FST frame and fork en route to replace my recently bent-up DT DLX. Got it for next to nothing via a diabolical cocktail of year-end clearances, coupon codes, free shipping, and random gift cards I had accumulated at work. Done and done.

CBGB at Newark Airport. Punk isn't just dead. Punk's long-buried corpse has been completely devoured by maggots and returned to the soil from whence it came.

Cool stuff. Jar of Lindor chocolates s from Martin Strings, Remembering D. Boon and the Minutemen, Reagan's Daughter: My Dad Would Be 'So Appalled' By GOP Presidential Candidates, noodles at Corner 17, candy cane lane with the family, VTLSTL: A St. Louis Mixer, haircut, Sega Dreamcast 2?

Tuesday soundtrack. Pailhead, Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Kreator, Voivod,

Monday, December 21, 2015

december twenty-first

Five for December 21st:

Short week. Three days in the office this week, at least one of which will be a complete blowoff. Here’s to the long weekend.

Winter crop. The spring-like temperatures over the last few weeks led to a surprise row of kale popping up in the backyard garden- and just in time, as we recently inherited a gently-used cold frame. Fresh greens all winter!

George. He’s this close to crawling on his knees (he has nearly perfected the army crawl at this point) and is now sitting upright for extended periods of time without toppling over.

Cool stuff. New plain black hoodie, new Dan’s Comp catalog, free issues of St. Louis magazine in the mail, Vacation DVD, Schlafly winter market/xmas ale, Argentina's underwater town that was submerged for 30 years, neighborhood adventures with Jane.

Thrashin'. Good times at a mysteriously uncrowded JB yesterday with Andy and Brians Tucker, Fair, Boeser, and Hammack (in no particular order). The shred was on high despite the wind.

Friday, December 18, 2015

december eighteenth

Five for December 18th:

Last night. Jane had the time of her life riding the Polar Express, and George even got in on the action. Seeing my kid dancing to Trans-Siberian Orchestra around a Christmas display in the middle of Union Station in her bathrobe will be something I’ll never forget.

Free food. Bagels and donuts at this morning’s meeting, companywide holiday lunch this afternoon, bag of chocolates.

Must resist. I need a new BMX like I need a hole in the head, but the combination of the 2015 Haro Brian Blyther FST on mega sale w/free shipping at Dan’s Comp and an early bonus check may be too much for my weak-willed brain to handle.

Cool stuff. Morning roll, The creators of the ColecoVision are back with a new cartridge-based console, Religion gets Totally Radical at the Church of Skate, Backyard BMX With The Shadow Team, Lost Mike V & Ed Templeton New Deal Footage, Macaulay Culkin Plays the Home Alone Kid As a Psycho Adult, Tommy Guerrero Perpetual on Spotify.

Weekend action. Lisa’s work holiday party, Seth and Lindsay’s holiday party, outdoor skate session, possible drinks with Scott, hanging with the kids.

Thursday, December 17, 2015

december seventeenth

Five for December 17th:

Polar express. Happening tonight at Union Station. Jane is stoked to ride a train in her pajamas- and who wouldn’t be?

Thursday night rock show. Hell Night at Fubar for five bucks. Count me in, if bedtimes and my brain are cooperating.

NPR. If there's one thing I've learned from NPR over the years, it's that Novo Nordisk is I guess a business or charity or something. It's definitely two words. I know that much. Wait, maybe it's one word.

Cool stuff. New episodes of Myth Hunters, Bernie Sanders has now received two million contributions, Shkreli Arrested on Fraud Charges, fresh-groomed schnoodle, Ranchito with Tom and Brian, Kreator on Spotify.

Washed out. Went out to White Birch skatepark for a lunch session yesterday only to find the place completely soaked and the gate locked. Complete bummer.

Wednesday, December 16, 2015

december sixteenth

Five for December 16th:

Tisn’t the season. Another spring-like day outside, with the sun shining and temperatures nearing 60 degrees. We actually need to mulch over our flower beds as stuff is starting to sprout.

Getting radical. Afternoon trip to White Birch was out of the question yesterday due to work craziness, but I did make it down to the Loop to bust a few back-alley bunnyhops. May try to make it out there today if it dries up.

Henry. At the groomer today for a drastically overdue shearing. He’s gonna feel like a new dog.

Cool stuff. 3 mega-rare Black Flag videos unearthed, morning space exploration with Jane, Pioneers: the Mark Gonzales ride, In the raw - So Cal Pools 2000, Burrito and the Lightningbolt, Blondie’s New York on Netflix, making Siri British.

It's still fast food. 2015 Was Easily the Most Depressing Year in Chipotle’s History. Overrated even without all the foodborne illnesses.

Tuesday, December 15, 2015

december fifteenth

Five for December 15th:

Star Wars spoilers. They are surprisingly easy to avoid. All you have to do is not read them!

Frame job. Got some updated family photos printed and up on the walls around the house, including (finally) some of George. Looks like you’re official now, kid.

White Birch skatepark. Possible short afternoon session cooking, depending on the weather and how busy I am today. Definitely have enough time in to make it out there for 25 minutes or so. Here’s hoping.

Cool stuff. New business cards, bacon jam pub burger at 3 Kings, This is what Super Mario Bros. 3 on PC could've looked like, Steven Hamilton- Fall 2015, Scott Ogilvie with some straight talk on the proposed stadium deal.

Tuesday soundtrack. Dexter Gordon, Greenhornes, Miles Davis, JFA, The Clash, Minutemen, Jawbreaker, Baroness.

Monday, December 14, 2015

december fourteenth

Five for December 14th:

Early to rise. Downstairs at 5:45 this morning, drinking coffee and watching Rage at the Badlands parts 1-5.

Home furnishings. Sleeper couch for the front room getting delivered today, in the process of picking out a new dining room table and chairs, new TV stand/cabinet in the back room to replace the cheap college dorm-style thing we’ve had running sine our first apartment.

Skating. The ground never quite fully dried out this weekend despite the 70 degree weather, so we moved the Saturday session indoors to Ramp Riders. Kind of a bummer to skate inside on such a nice day, but JB was soaked and it was that or nothing. Good times nonetheless.

Cool stuff. George slept almost all night last night, new issue of Ride BMX, Schlafly grapefruit IPA, free cold frame for the garden, Odyssey 30 year jam, Star Wars sound design: a video breakdown of all the secrets behind the sounds, enchiladas, clean carpets, 3 Kings with Tom.

Hitting the town. Gelato outside at Di Riso on the Hill, Chris’ Pancakes for summer omelettes, Clifton Park playground with the goobers, walking the 'hood.

Friday, December 11, 2015

december eleventh

Five for December 11th:

Santa’s little helper. Spent the morning with Jane hanging out at her preschool, making ornaments, and getting in her first visit with the man in red. She asked for a Buzz Lightyear and scored a totally sweet reindeer cup. Good times.

Late entry. Rolling in to the office at noon and trying to play catch-up with actual work means this thing will be going up after hours. What can you do?

Shave and a haircut. Henry is currently the shaggiest he has been in years. At least a month overdue for a trip to the groomer. Happening next week, mercifully.

Cool stuff. Early evening Deer Creek curb session, getting paid, free lunch at the office, President Obama Finalizing Plan to Expand Background Checks—Without Congress, 25th anniversary Hoffman Bikes swag.

Weekend action. Moving a couch, JB skate sesh, The Sword at Ready Room or Kadu Flyer at Schlafly, cleaning up the house, hanging out with the family, drinking coffee, riding the BMX.

Thursday, December 10, 2015

december tenth

Five for December 10th:

Wild Lights. Good times last night at the Zoo for Wild Lights- my first time there for it after living in the city for almost 20 years now. The kids had a blast, and I scored some of the best kettle corn I’ve ever eaten.

Return of the Pharma-bro. Just in case you didn’t hate the smug prick enough already.

High near 70 degrees. December doesn’t seem to want to make an appearance. The longer we can stave off the freezing temperatures and creep toward spring, the better.

Cool stuff. George is almost sitting, Ranchito with Tom and Craig, new notebook, Philly cheesesteak sub, rad sunset, one week til The Force Awakens, Iron Maiden Tailgunner shirt.

Fighting the good fight. Not completely out of the woods yet, but never before have I battled back a cold with as much speed and ferocity as the one that crept up on Tuesday afternoon. Zicam and peppermint tea for the win.

Wednesday, December 9, 2015

december ninth

Five for December 9th:

Yesterday sucked. In addition to being stuck in the Loop for an hour and a half with a dead battery at lunch, I started feeling a cold coming on and spent the evening blowing through a box of Kleenex. One $100 battery and a bag of Zicam later, things are getting back on track.

Elf on the shelf. We’re having a blast playing it with Jane this year, who wakes up every morning eager to catch the elf in some sort of misdeed and scold him for it. Good times.

Tyson’d. Instead of arguing about guns on Twitter, Neil deGrasse Tyson just laid out the numbers.

Cool stuff. Nyquil, Cannibal Corpse and Obituary at Ready Room, Jon Stewart Returns To The Daily Show And He’s Pissed, Tom Brokaw blasts Trump in a powerful video, Zippy Burger, modernist treasure hidden in the Kingshighway U-Haul building, Golden Grahams.

SOTY 2015. AVE wins it, which is certainly deserved (plus it’s rad to see someone my age get it). That said, hoping to live to see the day where Ben Raybourn can claim what is rightfully his.

Tuesday, December 8, 2015

december eighth

Five for December 8th:

Awesome weather. A week of mild temperatures (getting up to 60 and sunny today) in December is fine by me anytime. Keep ‘em coming.

Family pix. Good to know that, no matter what, we got at least one good photo out of the deal. Hopefully there’ll be a few more sprinkled in there.

Neil Peart announces retirement. That’s the sound of a million nerds’ heads exploding at the same time.

Cool stuff. Old school Jane, Connor Lodes interview, Trump’s hate speech may get him banned from the UK, matching set of pink Tony Hawk reissues, lunch cruising, Street Plant: Old Skool NJ ’86, Vans BMX- Roaming in the Northwest.

Tuesday soundtrack. Jawbox, Deep Purple, Faraquet, Lungfish, Failure, Drive Like Jehu, Dio, Iron Maiden.

Monday, December 7, 2015

december seventh

Five for December 7th:

Photo session. We somehow managed to wrangle an energetic 3 year old and an increasingly rambunctious 6 month old into sitting still long enough to snap off a few new photos. Can’t wait to see them, and finally get some pics of George on the wall.

Skateboarding. Didn’t get a ton in, but I managed an hour or so at JB Saturday and swung by Webster for a few curb hops yesterday before running an errand. Gotta take what I can get while the weather is still cooperating.

Easy target. Trump Mocked Disabled People, So Disabled People Mock Trump, Donald Trump abruptly ends speech after 10 protest interruptions.

Cool stuff. This little dude, return of the Ripper ornament, How To Blow Up A House With Popcorn: A Look Back At Real Genius, 30 Years Later, Alabama Surrenders In Fight Against Planned Parenthood, Chasing Tyson on Netflix, KISS plays Michigan high school’s homecoming in 1975.

Weekend highlights. Maplewood Christmas tree light-up, Faust Park Carousel, ornament application, neighborhood pirate adventure, building a gingerbread house.

Friday, December 4, 2015

december fourth

Five for December 4th:

Freshly shorn. Close-shaved last night for the first time since April. Sometimes you just have to hit the ol’ reset button.

Best Instagrams. Thiebaud, Heavy Metal Chuck, Stackaly, Creepovision, Duke Best, Eben Krakau, Bryce Kanights, Darren Navarrette.

Danzig Skeletons. The new Danzig covers album came out a few days ago, finally getting around to listening to it this morning. Way better than I was expecting.

Cool stuff. New issue of Decibel at the office, morning caffeine cruise, Dragon Tales with Jane, key lime yogurt, peppermint tea resupply, Under the Influence: Riding Opposite, Part 2, Welcome Skateboards “Early Grab” decks.

Weekend action. Getting some new family photos taken, putting up the tree, JB skate session, Janey date, hanging out with mom, enjoying the unseasonably mild temperatures.

Thursday, December 3, 2015

december third

Five for December 3rd:

God Isn’t Fixing This. Another day, another newspaper giving no fucks with regard to calling hypocrite politicians out on their bullshit. Also, your opinion on gun control doesn’t matter.

January NAMM. For the first time in years I’m actually sorta jazzed to go out to the show. In addition to it being a huge one for SLM, I’ll be rooming with Seth and have a few plans with California friends and industry people I only see from time to time cooking. Plus, some sunshine and palm trees in January is always nice.

Quebano at Vernon’s. The dream is alive.

Cool stuff. New Dan’s Comp catalog, Kingshighway at Forest Park Parkway Set to Become At-Grade Intersection, morning roll, Snark picks, Ultrajams Spotify mix.

George. These days, he’s all about shuffle-crawling over to the vent in the family room and waiting till the heat kicks on. It’s his favorite thing. Such an awesome little dude.

Wednesday, December 2, 2015

december second

Five for December 2nd:

My little artist. Jane drew her first discernible face onto a picture this morning, and has been getting progressively better at coloring inside the lines. She’s also (almost) definitely right-handed.

Selling stuff. Boxes of robot toys, a leather chair and ottoman, and a bunch of dust-collecting skate stuff is about to hit the chopping block. Time to clean up.

Zero punches pulled. The Washington Post comes out swinging: Donald Trump is a bigot and a racist.

Cool stuff. Free Powell Ripper tote bag from SoCal Skates, sunshine curb session, Seoul Taco with Brian, home life, new Star Wars: The Force Awakens super trailer, work coffee restock.

Salt & Vinegar chips. Because nothing else even counts.

Tuesday, December 1, 2015

december first

Five for December 1st:

December. I realize that seemingly half of this blog is me finding different ways to lament the fact that time flies, but seriously, how is it already December? It was summer yesterday.

Date night. Two solo nights out in as many weeks? What is this world coming to? First time at Royale in forever last night for brisket tacos and coffee stout.

Quote of the week. “Basically, Trump is what would happen if the comments section became human and ran for president.”

Cool stuff. Sunshine after four days of pissing cold misery, loaded oatmeal, welcome to the saddest 1980’s mall in America, Black Market shop decks, Justin Brock interview, free stickers, The War On Christmas Is Real, And Purell Is Leading The Charge.

Tuesday soundtrack. Belle and Sebastian, Riddle of Steel, All, Shadows Fall, High on Fire, Big Boys, Jawbox.
