february twenty-ninth

Five for February 29th:

Snot factory. My immune system finally succumbed to this insane back and forth winter/summer weather after not getting so much as a sniffle since sometime in early summer 2015.

Gus’ Fried Chicken. I just plain don’t get why people get so crazy about fried chicken. Any fried chicken. It’s mediocre and makes you feel like crap. This place was no exception. I guess it’s good if you’re into this sort of thing, but how these places have lines out the door 24/7 I’ll never know. I’d rather eat a PB&J.

Getting gnarly. ...Or something like that. Sunny Sunday session at JB with the old man crew, backyard freestyle on the parking pad, morning roll, lunch sesh.

Cool stuff. Fresh edging and mulch in the front garden bed, new issue of Thrasher, bikes with Jane, Toyko flatland all day, John Oliver Finally Takes on "Serial Liar" Donald Trump and It Was Brutally Fantastic, back porch hangs with the family, Tom’s Dennis McCoy tales.

Early to rise. Was up at 4:30 this morning dealing with this cold and couldn’t get back to sleep, so I went downstairs, brewed a pot of coffee and watched Freestyling Fanatics and GTV back to back. Not too bad a start to the week, all things considered.

february twenty-sixth

Five for February 26th:

George. Our little dude turns nine months old tomorrow. I can’t even put into words how sweet, smart, laid-back and awesome this kid is, and how amazing it has been to have him in our lives.

Trops in trouble. You know something is seriously amiss when a bar and its clientele is considered to be too rowdy for freaking Soulard. I didn’t even know such a thing was possible in that neighborhood.

Melissa Click. Maybe the university will get to call in some muscle to assist her in vacating her office. Good riddance to this subhuman.

Cool stuff. New Dan’s Comp catalog, donuts at work, coffee koozie, brown rice krispies, Van Homan in Holy Fit Ender Ender.

Weekend action. Another spring-like weekend in the 60’s and 70’s coming up, which means cramming in as much outside action in as possible. Potential shed moving, introducing ourselves to our new neighbors, taking kids to the park, and a skate/BMX session or two.

february twenty-fifth

Five for February 25th:

Iron Maiden. The set list for their 2016 world tour went up last night via a series of sporadic Instagram posts. Very new-album heavy, which was to be expected, with some surprising older cuts like Children of the Damned and Powerslave thrown in for good measure. Pretty solid overall.

Easy come, easy go. The snowfall that essentially crippled the STL metro area yesterday morning is all but completely gone now, which bodes well for outdoor action this weekend.

Idiocracy now. The Writer of Idiocracy Is Very Sad About Correctly Predicting the Future. It's terrifying how spot-on that movie is turning out to be.

Cool stuff. ‘Chit with Brian and Tom, iPhone photo/video dump, Al Franken blasts Mitch McConnell, Vital BMX Rob Ridge interviews one and two, morning roll, Youtube’s “continue watching” option, The definitive, encyclopedic case for why Hillary Clinton is the wrong choice.

St. Louis Mills. Just sold for 4.4 million dollars, which as Next STL points out is 98% off the cost it was completed for just 12 years ago. The death knell for this place? Very likely. It was a ghost town last time we were there. However, it will always be where Janey met the easter bunny for the first time and where I saw an insane Birdhouse skate demo at plan nine and got to meet Jaws and Ben Raybourn and a host of others.

february twenty-fourth

Five for February 24th:

This morning. Was home with the kids till about noon today, as early-morning roadway nastiness made the usual Wednesday trek to NoCo not worth the risk. By the time I left for work every road was clear and the snow was melting as quickly as it had fallen. Back to the 50’s this weekend. The past couple of weeks have been a roller coaster.

Dropkick Murphys. Rad show at Pageant last night. We had the VIP hookup via Brian and pretty much had a roped-off section to ourselves, which was nice as the show was sold out and Brian’s wife is mega-pregnant. Good times.

Freestylin’. Fun solo sesh yesterday afternoon. Squeaked out a few weak funky chickens (neither of which I actually got out of successfully) and some other basic old man BMX stuff before grabbing coffees and heading back.

Cool stuff. Big Brother book, secret menus in Mortal Kombat discovered after two decades, easy afternoon catch-up, new issue of STL magazine.

Trash fail. Hope the city of STL sanitation department enjoys picking up the small army of now-500 lb soaked mattresses around Clifton Heights they decided to ignore on big trash pickup day when it was 60 degrees and dry.

february twenty-third

Five for February 23rd:

Play date. Left work a little early yesterday to take Jane to the park. Super fun, if not slightly chilly. She run me ragged playing Jake and the Neverland Pirates until some kids showed up. We played till the sun went down. Best times.

Dropkick Murphys. Tonight at the Pageant. Brian scored some guest list/VIP passes, so we’ll be stylin’ and profilin’. That said, tomorrow morning might be kinda rough.

Flatland. Brought my bike in today in the hopes of getting in some riding before the next round of snowfall. Church parking lot, here I come.

Cool stuff. BMX Family: Brock Raiford & His Dad, Peter Hewitt's "Birthday at Nude Bowl", Calls to change U. of Alabama building name to honor Harper Lee instead of KKK leader, haircut, $32 Hosoi "Monk" decks on Seshday.

Tuesday soundtrack. Riddle of Steel, The Muffs, Voivod, Lamb of God, ALL, Iron Maiden, Weird Al.

Monday, February 22, 2016

february twenty-second

Five for February 22nd:

Record highs. 72 degrees Friday, 78 Saturday, and 56 yesterday. Nothing but sunshine. Never seen bigger crowds at the park getting in on the action. Of course, true to St. Louis fashion, it will be snowing by Wednesday. Hard to complain, though.

Ted Drewes. First custard of the new year with Jane. Heath bar concrete and a hot fudge sundae, for the win.

Georgie. Great weekend with the little dude, complete with a lot of firsts: First time taking him for a solo walk to the park in the stroller, first time pushing him on the swings, and first time actually completing a book before bed.

Cool stuff. New issue of Ride BMX, Mike Vallely, Jason Adams and Kristian Svitak On The Lemon Mini Ramp, George’s room is finally dialed in, backyard freestylin’, turkey burgers on the grill, iPhone photo dump.

Skating. Super fun session at JB with Andy and Brian on Saturday. Somehow, we basically had the place to ourselves even though it was literally the warmest day in recorded history for that date in the city of St. Louis. Much raging went down, with Andy blasting some huge airs out of the low bowls.

february ninteenth

Five for February 19th:

Bike commuting. Rode in to work today for the first time since before George was born. Made it door to door in 30 minutes. The weather is too amazing not to take advantage of, and it felt awesome to get the blood pumping.

Fish Fry. Much as I’m craving some fried cod and a giant scoop of mac n’ cheese, it’s simple too nice outside to squander away a Friday evening in some church basement. Maybe next week.

Busy day. This post is going up late today due to an unusually busy day at work. For a Friday anyway. What’re you gonna do?

Cool stuff. Nigel Sylvester Pays Tribute to Dave Mirra, The Rotting Rothschild Mansion in Paris, popcorn Friday, morning driveway roll-around, playing birthday with Jane, Bernie Sanders Overtakes Hillary Clinton in 3 More States.

Weekend action. Riding bikes, skate session at JB with the old man crew, taking the kids to the park, backyard bbq, being outdoors as much as possible.

Thursday, February 18, 2016

february eighteenth

Five for February 18th:

Solo parenting. Had both kids to myself to wrangle up this morning, in addition to trying to get myself ready for work, get dishes washed, pets fed, and whatever else. Somewhere in there I drank a cup of coffee, I think.

Ed Force One. Iron Maiden’s customized 747, new and improved for 2016. Definitely the coolest airplane to ever take to the skies.

Rider Cup Contest ’92. Some super fun contest footage from the early dark days of skating and BMX. Bonus: synchronized rollerblading.

Cool stuff. Strawberry Pop-Tarts, late evening roll-around at Deer Creek, backyard bikes, 10 Abandoned Subway Stations and Forgotten Subterranean Platforms of New York City, forgotten Q'Doba gift card.

Mi Ranchito. Brought lunch in, but the combined lure of lunch cheesesteak, getting out of the building, and hanging with friends won the day. My PB&J and hard-boiled egg will have to wait till tomorrow.

Wednesday, February 17, 2016

february seventeenth

Five for February 17th:

Rad weather. Most of the snow from a couple days ago is already melted, and a week or so of super mild, spring-like temperatures are coming up. I'm ready for some outdoor action.

Workplace overhaul. The new showroom across from our office is coming together and looking awesome. Huge drum display, wall of guitars, and new meeting/conference space. The space is a huge improvement and everyone down here is stoked to have it accessible full-time.

Finding Dory. Jane is excited about going to see her first movie in a theater in a few months. And I am excited about taking her.

Cool stuff. R.I.P. Love Park, Remembering Dave Mirra, Sanders catches up to Clinton in Nevada after explosive surge of support, lunch with Brian, The Shrine on Spotify, No Man’s Sky.

Summer travels. Bunch of good stuff coming up. Anniversary weekend in Grafton, family vacations to Florida and Table Rock Lake, a potential cabin-rental weekend in the woods with old friends, and whatever else comes along.

Tuesday, February 16, 2016

february sixteenth

Five for February 16th:

George. Started strolling around the living room yesterday evening with the help of his infant walker. Picked it up like it was nothing. He's on pace to be completely mobile well before his first birthday.

Santa Cruz. Finally re-releasing the Bod Boyle “Stained Glass” deck, which has in my mind one of the single greatest graphics ever drawn and is pretty much the only real must-reissue left for them. Complete classic.

Shredding. Last-minute session came together last night with Andy and Brian at Ramp Riders. Good times and a mellow crowd. Felt good to roll around for a bit.

Cool stuff. New stuntwood + SCS stickers, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday trailer, tacos and Pacifico, Ben Mykytyshyn Edit, Seating Mix-up Puts Tony Bennett in Middle of Slipknot, London’s Abandoned Eiffel Tower Replica, I didn’t actually lose my new coat.

Tuesday soundtrack. Exploding Hearts, Kiss, Real Kids, the Spits, Dead Moon, High Tension Wires.

Monday, February 15, 2016

february fifteenth

Five for February 15th:

Snow day. Perfect powdery snow for sledding the hill in Clifton Park with Jane, and also quick and easy shoveling of the driveway.

Alice in Wonderland. Bought the Little Golden Book for Jane on a whim in the checkout line at the store last night and she loved it. I had to read it to her three times before bed, and she started watching the movie this morning. She can already name all the characters.

CafĂ© Mochi. Saturday night sushi Valentine’s date with Lisa. Best volcano roll I’ve ever had, and a top-notch Gojira as well. Topped off with some Sapporo and sake’.

Cool stuff. This guy, 70 degrees by Friday, The History of Powell Peralta’s Skull & Sword, Bernie Sanders skate stickers, Home Turf featuring Mike Varga, Democrat's Bill Requires Men To Have Note From Wife, Pledge Oath On Bible To Get Viagra, The Day Beyonce Turned Black.

Skating. Plans to hit Morganford for a chilly outdoor session with Andy were quashed due to snow and ice on the transitions, so we re-routed to Ramp Riders for a fast and dirty mini-ramp jam before the place got packed. Also squeezed in a few boardslides at Webster.

Friday, February 12, 2016

february twelfth

Five for February 12th:

This week. Long and tedious one at the office, with the rest of it compounded by cold weather, snow, and little to no physical activity. Glad for the weekend to be here.

Jaws vs. the Lyon 25. Some of the gnarliest, insanest, most death-defying skateboarding to ever go down. Watch it and cringe.

Master of Doin’ It. Someone did a mash-up of Metallica and Herbie Hancock that is almost too good to be believed. The internet strikes again.

Cool stuff. Donuts at work, Jane’s valentine haul, I’m Not Political (Because I Assume I Will Retain All of My Privileges Forever), democratic debate highlights.

Weekend action. Wash U dinner tonight, V-day date night with Lisa tomorrow evening, skate session at Ramp Riders, trip to Planet Score, hanging out with the kids.

Thursday, February 11, 2016

february eleventh

Five for February 11th:

Like a rocket. George can now crawl full-speed across a room in the blink of an eye, has perfected pulling up on the couch, and is now working on walking while holding on to it. He made it pretty much the whole length of the thing this morning.

Japanese ghost taxi passengers. I’ll take the next one.

We hardly knew ye. Looks like the Chris Christie and Carly Fiorina presidential campaigns have both been shipped off to that big baby-part flea market in the sky. Who would’ve thought?

Cool stuff. Summer of Colony Road Trip, lunch with Brian, Why Bernie is Beating Hillary, Dogtown Scott Oster reissues, yesterday would have been Cliff Burton’s 54th birthday, new Ryan Nyquist interview.

Sled sesh. Hoping to hit some hills in Clifton Park tonight with Jane, provided the snow is plentiful enough to sled on, and the temperature isn’t too close to below freezing.

Wednesday, February 10, 2016

february tenth

Five for February 10th:

Bernie wins NH primary. Related, It’s almost over for Hillary: This election is a mass insurrection against a rigged system, Barring unforeseeable events, Bernie Sanders will be the Democratic nominee.

Bringing lunch. Three days in a row now. Not a huge accomplishment, but man, the going-out levels were getting ridiculous for a minute there. Having a bunch of good leftovers definitely helps.

Ironic currency. Anyone have seventeen dollar bills they’d like to trade for seventeen Susan B. Anthony dollars?

Cool stuff. Ray Barbee A Chronology of Style - Part 1, Michael Woodby Gets Toasted, pistachios at work, beers with Brian, Fit In AZ - Outta Hand Trip, evenings with the goofballs.

Clickhole does it again. Someone Built A World In ‘Minecraft’ Where 9/11 Never Happened And It’s Incredible.

Tuesday, February 9, 2016

february ninth

Five for February 9th:

Light dusting 2016. Naturally, everyone was crawling along at 3 mph this morning and it took an extra 15 minutes to get to work, only to find our meeting was cancelled due to everyone having trouble getting in. There’s literally a nano-inch of the lightest dusty snow imaginable on the roads. Sometimes I hate this town.

Cavity creeps. Got a filling last night. First one in forever. Ace job by my dentist- not even the smallest amount of discomfort once the novocain wore off. Like nothing ever happened.

Fat Tuesday. Note that I couldn’t possibly care less about this day, save for the fact that it heralds the official beginning of fish fry season- one of my all-time favorite parts of the year. Bring on the cod.

Cool stuff. Office fingerboard sessions, Iron Maiden Tailgunner t-shirt, World’s Oldest Woman Just Pleased Every Other Human On Earth When She Was Born Now Dead, Under Sanders, income and jobs would soar, economist says, possible evening snowboarding in CHP, Profile Racing - North of NOLA: Degroot & Adams, watching Pee-Wee’s Playhouse with Jane.

Tuesday soundtrack. Redd Kross, Descendents, Bad Religion, Pentagram, Elvis Costello, Black Flag, Adolescents, Fear.

Monday, February 8, 2016

february eighth

Five for February 8th:

Return of the cold. Back into the 20’s and below for the next week or so, though it’s hard to complain after another sunny weekend in the mid-fifties.

One man’s trash. Found two jump ramps, a couple of jacked-up decks (one an Element), and a fingerboard bowl sitting beside a trash can over the weekend. Score!

Skate trip. Hit up Belleville skatepark with Andy over the weekend. First time there in forever. Good times despite the (expectedly) weird crowd and overabundance of scooter kids. Polished it off with a stop at Jolly Roger to shoot the shit and screen some shirts.

Cool stuff. Set of OG Schmitt Stix street razors, new pair of Pig rails, front flip to frame snap, pancake date with Janey, Mike V Making Peace with Public Domain, new lightning cable, There’s No Way To Describe How Ridiculous The Botched Intros Were At The GOP Debate, homemade chili.

History buffed. Got a chance to check out the Walk in 1875 St. Louis exhibit over the weekend before it shut down. Totally amazing. Clifton Heights was literally fields in those days.

Friday, February 5, 2016

february fifth

Five for February 5th:

Dave Mirra. Unbelievably sad news about one of BMX’s all-time greats. Perhaps the all-time great.

Politics. The Democratic Debate Was a Case of ‘It’s Just Not Achievable’ Versus the ‘Political Revolution’, Man Confronts Trump: I Want a President Who Would Be a Role Model for My Daughters.

The Story of the story of Everest. Glad to see I’m not the only person who thinks this Mr. Show skit was the best thing they ever did.

Cool stuff. Popcorn Friday, getting paid, “Savage” Steve Holland will return for another Crazy Summer, Ranchito with Tom and Craig.

Weekend action. Hanging with the kids, skate trip across the river with Andy to hit Jolly Roger and the Belleville park, avoiding Soulard.

Thursday, February 4, 2016

february fourth

Five for February 4th:

Jane quote of the day. “Daddy, there’s an artist who cut his ear off. It wasn’t Kandinsky or Ansel Adams.”

Grim Reaper. Coming to Fubar in April. Definitely have to go to this one. My first band used to close each set with a cover of “See You In Hell”, which was pretty much the only redeeming part of that band.

RIP Bob Elliott. He’ll always be Chris Peterson’s dad on Get A Life as far as I’m concerned, and that’s potentially the highest praise I could give anyone.

Cool stuff. Afternoon skate sesh with Brian, @creepovision Instagram, remembering to bring lunch, Bernie Sanders stops speech to help a supporter who fainted, David Gravette product pillage, Portlandia revisited, Lance Mountain kickflipped a table at 51 years old.

Elizabeth Warren lays waste. "There are two legal systems in America; one of the rich and powerful, and one for everyone else." Sanders/Warren 2016.

Wednesday, February 3, 2016

february third

Five for February 3rd:

George. A monumental morning for our little dude- he said his first word (“mom”) AND had his first-ever ride in his real car seat. Growing up fast!

When you ask me to vote for Hillary. I do not think it means what you think it means.

New setup. Finally threw together this Assault punk point last night. Took it out for a few boardslides this morning. Feels good. Looking forward to tossing it around at JB over the weekend.

Cool stuff. Black Sabbath Germany 1970, Brad Simms Texas clip, Pocket Pistols Spidey new colors, The A-Team on Netflix, free Gus’ pretzels at work.

Fifth thing. It’s already 2 pm and things at work ain’t getting any slower, so I’m taking a mulligan on #5. I’m surprised I made it this far.

Tuesday, February 2, 2016

february second

Five for February 2nd:

Iowa Caucuses. Trump loses, Sanders and Clinton are still neck and neck- a feat most thought impossible. On to New Hampshire.

Turbo Kid. One part Rad, one part BMX Bandits, one part Mad Max, one part Cherry 2000. The most insanely awesome and comically gory movie ever. Currently on Netflix. Watch it immediately.

Waiting Room. Rare video of Fugazi in St. Louis circa 1988. Not sure of the venue. Guess this was before they started chastising their audiences for stagediving.

Cool stuff. Blueberry muffins at work, morning space adventures with Jane, 3 Kings with Brian, Cheap Corey O’Brien “Mutant City” decks at SCS.

Tuesday soundtrack. D.R.I., Pixies, Bad Brains, Iron Maiden, Joy Division, Blondie, The Sword, Electric Frankenstein.

Monday, February 1, 2016

february first

Five for February 1st:

January. If there’s a better way to close out the first month of the year than with a sunny, 65-degree weekend, I don’t know what it is.

Skating. Fun session at JB on Saturday with almost everyone from the crew in attendance, taking advantage of the good weather and going huge. Got in a couple of quick boardslides on the way in this morning as well.

Feel the Bern. How this weekend’s Bernie Sanders Iowa rally compared to Hillary Clinton’s. Hopefully this is a good reflection of the voting to come.

Cool stuff. New issue of Thrasher, feeding the ducks with Jane, drinks with Scott at Crow’s Nest, Toy Machine/New Deal Templeton first pro model reissue, grilling out, getting the front of the house raked, kiwi strawberry breakfast shakes, toddler Spitfire socks for George.

Fish fry season. Right around the corner. It’ll be a bit of a struggle this year with two kids in tow, but hopefully we’ll get out to at least one or two.
