march thirty-first

Five for March 31st:

Lisa. Congrats to my awesome wife on her well-deserved Juice Plus promotion, and for just generally crushing it at life, career, goals and motherhood.

Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday. Don’t drag your feet on watching this. It’s beyond hilarious. Just saw it last night and already want to watch it again.

April. Going to be a fun month. Our 3-year anniversary, two vacation trips, some good shows, riding bikes, and ringing in the real start of spring.

Cool stuff. 3 Kings with the lunch squad, setting up the Tony Hawk pig board, playing Star Wars with Jane, The Deranged True Story of Heavy Metal Parking Lot, the Citizen Kane of Wasted Teenage Metalness.

Record haul. Scored a pile vinyl from Lisa's mom the other day, including some classic Elton John, ELO, Fleetwood Mac, The Band, Beach Boys, Stones, Foghat, and a bunch of other goodies.

march thirtieth

Five for March 30th:

Lunch buds. With Lisa’s mom sick, I got to spend the afternoon hanging out with the kids for a bit. Ate some snacks, watched some Tarzan, and had a good time. I'll take it.

Elixir Strings. As of 8:30 this morning, it just got real ‘round these parts.

Online arguments. I try to avoid them at all costs, but I couldn’t help but get into on yesterday. I’m happy to say I completely shut the dude down. That’s enough for this year.

Cool stuff. Free Elixir t-shirts and string sets, morning cake, MacGyver on Netflix, Merry Clayton Spotify mix, collaborative garden artwork.

Travel prep. Our first trip with two kids in tow is coming up soon, and the sheer number of things we have to remember to bring is staggering. The days of packing light are officially over, at least for the time being.

Tuesday, March 29, 2016

march twenty-ninth

Five for March 29th:

Overcaffeination. Couple cups of coffee at home, a grande pike roast at Starbucks, and a pot of caribou at work has officially given me the shakes.

Funny how that works. Saw a young kid at the park yesterday evening dressed in full military regalia carrying a toy gun and playing army in the trees by the basketball court. He was white, so he wasn't murdered by the police.

Henry. About time for his spring grooming appointment, as his shagginess is starting to reach stratospheric levels.

Cool stuff. How skateboarding is responsible for Ray Barbee’s music career, remembering lunch, Backbone BMX Victoria road trip, Table Rock Lake July weekender, afternoon roll-around.

Tuesday soundtrack. James Brown, Miles Davis, Black Keys, Blind Faith, Mercyful Fate, Tygers of Pan Tang, Cheap Trick, David Bowie.

Monday, March 28, 2016

march twenty-eighth

Five for March 28th:

Weekend at Bernie’s. Big couple days for the only worthwhile presidential candidate, winning Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii with close to 70 percent of the vote.

Easter. Living holidays vicariously through kids is one of the best things about having kids. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Jane have more fun than she did over this past weekend.

Skate sesh. Short and sweet one with Brian at a packed-out JB on Saturday. Spent as much time skating as I did dodging the scooter snakes. Ahwell.

Cool stuff. Forty years of Thin Lizzy’s Jailbreak, Trip Daddys at Bottleworks, upcoming Powell Caballero reissues, CHP spring cleanup, NBD: James Foster and the triple tailwhip, Georgia comes to its senses (or at least, their governor does).

Instagram. I’m not exactly 100% opposed to the new algorithm everyone is freaking out about, but I don’t see any reason to fix something that isn’t broken. I don’t need Instagram to figure out for me what I want to see- I already figured that out by who I’m following.

Friday, March 25, 2016

march twenty-fifth

Five for March 25th:

This week. Totally flew by. I can’t believe it’s already Friday. Not complaining.

Why are you voting for Clinton? She has and will continue to change her mind on policies and values to the degree that she believes that change will garner her more power. She has flip-flopped on international trade deals, immigration, same sex marriage, the legitimacy of the Iraq War, arming of Syrian Rebels, raising the payroll tax, Keystone Pipeline, etc. What does Hillary earnestly believe about each of these issues? How can you know?

The Phelper. Super engrossing, in-depth interview with/article about the man behind Thrasher. Great read, even if you have no interest in skateboarding.

Cool stuff. Conan O’Brien remembers Garry Shandling, Katie starts next week, morning curbslides, the goofballs, Ranchito, fresh veggies, Starbucks gift card I forgot about, Ditch Day Cult video.

Weekend action. Clifton Park spring clean-up/ egg hunt, skate session outdoors somewhere, hanging out with the family, trip to NoCo.

Thursday, March 24, 2016

march twenty-fourth

Five for March 24th:

Baby steps. George walked for the first time last night, managing about 6 or 7 steps to me across the room. Luckily, Lisa was there to witness it, as was Jane. I’ve never seen that boy so excited before.

Anagrammatically incorrect. The top anagrams for Matthew Joseph Picker are "Cheapest Hot Wimp Jerk" and "He Wipe Jockstrap Meth". Thanks, life.

BMX. My attempt to go ride yesterday evening was short-lived due to my back brakes going wonky. I think I got them fixed and working again, so hopefully I’ll be able to get a session in this afternoon if it dries up.

Cool stuff. Jason Adams ten favorite slappies, Phoenix Mayor Calls for Official DOJ Probe into Arizona Primary, Jane’s nature collection, Gorilla Biscuits on Spotify, Daredevil.

Iron Maiden. Dance of Death (and album on which I am thanked) and Rock in Rio are finally on Spotify. Brave New World and A Matter of Life and Death (another album in which I am thanked) are still conspicuously absent.

Wednesday, March 23, 2016

march twenty-third

Five for March 23rd:

Lion’s Choice. Their $0.25 vanilla cones are the best deal anywhere, and perfect for satisfying post-dinner ice cream requests from three year olds.

Time flies. Our show with the Greenhornes at the Firebird (immortalized on a poster hanging over our downstairs toilet) was a half-decade ago tonight. A super fun one where we debuted a tune that would end up being the final song on our final release.

James Brown. All day marathon going down at my desk.

Cool stuff. The Dream Driveway- DIY documentary series, Rod Man Out, Vans 50th Interviews: Jeff Grosso, Bernie wins Idaho and Utah, lunch with Brian.

Almost 72,000 pageviews. Who is reading this stupid thing?

Tuesday, March 22, 2016

march twenty-second

Five for March 22nd:

Rad coincidence. Totally unplanned, but the DVD bootleg copy of Rad I scored on eBay happened to arrive at my house yesterday- on the 30th anniversary of the movie’s release. Thanks, universe.

Biking in. Good morning for a ride to work. A bit brisk, but felt great once the blood got flowing. 70’s for the ride home this afternoon.

Old sleds. Dennis brought in his cache of old setups today: a rare Powell-Peralta Street Issue, Uncle Wiggley Brad Smith (note the purple Indy on the rear), and a shredded but still awesome early 90’s Lance Mountain. So sick.

Cool stuff. BMX rider shuts down uninformed cop, Clifton Park spring clean-up, Ted Cruz bad lip reading, stroganoff, Death Skateboards: Richie Jackson, possible evening sesh at Webster with Brian, $30 cash spiff out of the blue, growing up in arcades 1979-1989.

Tuesday soundtrack. Torche, Dangerous Toys, DRI, Black Tusk, Metallica, Queens of the Stone Age, Band of Horses.

Monday, March 21, 2016

march twenty-first

Five for March 21st:

First day of spring. What began as a cold, snow-filled bummer ended with sunshine, dry ground and a fired-up grill (although it was still pretty chilly). I’ll take it.

Frankie Hill Bulldog. Finally got it gripped up and out for a roll this weekend. Such a sick board that was so ahead of its time. Game-changing.

Watch list. New episodes of Daredevil, Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday, catch up on Walking Dead.

Cool stuff. Jane’s first cotton candy, backyard BMX, new issue of St. Louis Magazine, Gloimschmeckel Festival 2016, Try Again, leftover burgers, FLAG at Fubar in June, George is almost walking.

Epic takedowns. Elizabeth Warren unloads on Donald Trump, Here's What Happens When John Oliver Tries to Take Donald Trump's Biggest Campaign Promise Seriously.

Friday, March 18, 2016

march eighteenth

Five for March 18th:

Bad Brains. Somehow I’ve never seen this video of them decimating Berlin in 1983. A must-watch.

Pay attention. Absentmindedly tried to drive my normal route home through Dogtown yesterday. On St. Patrick’s day. That was a mistake I shan’t repeat.

City Hall adventures. Crisis was narrowly averted this morning when the woman searching fruitlessly for George’s birth certificate finally figured out after 15 minutes that she had been looking through the death records.

Cool stuff. The Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man watches the new Ghostbusters trailer, No, Not Trump, Not Ever, the Big Red at 3 Kings, Thin Lizzy Renegade on Spotify, Caribou Coffee at work.

Weekend action. Starman David Bowie tribute at Off Broadway, hanging out with the kids, skate session somewhere, avoiding the rain.

Thursday, March 17, 2016

march seventeenth

Five for March 17th:

St. Pat’s Day. Some shamrock shakes with Janey and my green Vans are about the extent of my celebration of this holiday.

Dump Trump. The Economist rates Trump presidency among its top 10 global risks, To defend our democracy against Trump, the GOP must aim for a brokered convention, A contested Republican convention, explained.

Tissues. Anything short of Vicks-scented Puffs with lotion is a sham.

Cool stuff. Selling the Psycho Stick, John Buultjens Session 43, evenings at the park, STL in bloom, donuts at work, afternoon roll, 2017 '87 and '88 Haro reissues.

New contacts. A slight change to my right lens prescription is making a huge difference. Let there be sight.

Wednesday, March 16, 2016

march sixteenth

Five for March 16th:

Democratic race. All is not lost for Bernie, but it may be coming up on the time to start focusing a lot harder on doing whatever is necessary to make sure Trump doesn’t happen.

Night moves. Met up with Brian for an evening skate session at Webster last night, complete with a few cold Modelos. Had the place to ourselves for the most part. Good way to close out a Tuesday.

Epic Dio tattoo. “More than anything, this tattoo is a solid reminder: go put on some Dio. You won’t feel satisfied until you do, and you’ll be happy you did afterwards.”

Cool stuff. New issue of Decibel, amazing phots from inside downtown’s abandoned Jefferson Hotel, 10 riders we wish still rode, Seoul Taco with Lisa, pushing George in the swing, spring in Clifton Heights.

Double vision. Eye doctor for some much-needed new contacts and possibly a new pair of glasses. My current frames are nearing a decade old, so I’d say it’s about time.

Tuesday, March 15, 2016

march fifteenth

Five for March 15th:

Primaries. At the polling place at 6:30 am today. To quote my friend Duane: “For the first time, I got to cast a vote that I don't have to hold my nose for. It isn't a calculated defensive vote. No crisis of conscience. A vote that I genuinely believe is just the right thing to do, for a person I simply think is the right person for the job.” Bernie 2016.

Light late. There are few things better than daylight savings. Met the crew at the park after work and stayed for an hour or so, sun shining the whole time. Can’t beat it.

Frankie Hill. Skateone has some Bulldog reissue, blem decks up for sale right now for cheep. Grab one and go bust some big fat ollie one-foots.

Cool stuff. 80 degrees today, Propeller South America tour extras, afternoon freestylin’, chorizo breakfast sandwich, Transworld High5 BMX 1993, this kid.

Tuesday soundtrack. Angel Witch, Cinderella, Black Sabbath, The Clash, Bad Religion, Dead Moon.

Monday, March 14, 2016

march fourteenth

Five for March 14th:

Weekend. Fun one despite the lingering rain. Managed to get in some gardening, a few walks around the neighborhood, a Home Depot run, skate session at Ramp Riders, donut date with Jane, and even a trip to the playground yesterday evening after the sun dried things a bit.

Rad. Snagged a bootleg DVD copy on eBay last night for cheap. A must-have movie that for some insane reason has never seen an actual, post-VHS release and never manages to stay on YouTube long. The need to watch it is a real one.

Noam Chomsky on the 2016 Republicans. “I Have Never Seen Such Lunatics in the Political System”.

Cool stuff. BMX India- Bloodline x Mascot, Kaldi’s at work, summer shorts and new hat, Danny DeVito at the STL Bernie Rally, Hillary Clinton gets pwned, lunch at Ranchito, freshly-bathed schnoodle.

This week. Busy one. Primary voting, early meetings, eye doctor appointment, visit to city hall to obtain a sheet of paper, new system training, riding bikes, getting a cymbal fixed, dodging rain, and parenting.

Friday, March 11, 2016

march eleventh

Five for March 11th:

Douchefest 2016. A Trump rally happening on 311 really couldn’t be any more fitting.

Party planner. The kids’ nanny turns 21 today, and Jane was excited to spend the morning hanging streamers and balloons and planning activities for the day.

Bane of my existence. Not content with simply leaving our dishes barely-clean, our useless excuse for a dishwasher officially hit its lowest point this morning by refusing to open, trapping a whole load inside. Can’t wait to get rid of this thing.

Cool stuff. More morning boardslides, Dave Vanderspek- Curb Dogs History, popcorn Friday, Dennis Enarson- Haro SDV2, Henry Rollins Big Ugly Mouth.

Weekend action. Rain in the forecast off and on all weekend, so plans are minimal at this point. Hopefully get in a skate/BMX session, some park time, and a donut date with Jane.

Thursday, March 10, 2016

march tenth

Five for March 10th:

Report card. Couldn’t attend parent-teacher conference this morning, but Jane is apparently doing very well at preschool. Not that I would expect anything less.

Night stunts. Squeaked out a few endos in the backyard last night with Jane just before the rain started falling.

3 Kings. Heading there for burgers with Tom and Brian. Forgot lunch, and today calls for getting out of the office for a bit.

Cool stuff. 2016 Haro DMC Master tribute lineup, work gum, why Michigan’s primary results are great news for Democrats, three days till DST.

To-do. List includes fun activities like getting my eyes checked for new contacts, a trip to city hall to obtain a birth certificate, and replacing about 50 burned out light bulbs in our house.

Wednesday, March 9, 2016

march ninth

Five for March 9th:

Sanders wins Michigan. Bernie proves once again that the mainstream media is living in a fantasy of its own creation.

Garden bed. All finished up as of yesterday. Thanks to Lisa’s dad for building it and doing it right.

Curb cuts. Snagged a yellow composite curb yesterday from a pile of weeds. Will be fun for sliding on once I screw a piece of wood to the bottom to give it some needed height and weight. The price was definitely right (free).

Cool stuff. Lynn Drury on Spotify, working with friends, Custom Cycle Bike Shop Instagram, lunchtime roll-around, more evening playground action with Jane, Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat.

Still no rain. It’s nearly Thursday and so far, the predictions of non-stop rain all week have proved totally false, which is fine by me.

Tuesday, March 8, 2016

march eighth

Five for March 8th:

Gardening. New and improved raised bed getting built in the backyard. In addition to being much larger than our current bed, this one will get much more sunlight through the day and have actual weed/animal protection built-in. Time to grow some tomatoes.

AC/DC. Bummer news about Brian Johnson. Between this, Malcolm Young’s dementia and Phil Rudd’s various legal troubles, you’d think they might finally accept the fact that it’s time to pack it in. Unfortunately, "Dates through early April will be made up later in the year, likely with a guest vocalist.” Just stop already.

Proud dad. Jane not only had a great visit to the dentist yesterday, she also slept her first night ever without her pacifier. My little girl is growing up too fast.

Cool stuff. Morning curb sesh, late evening at the playground, Nyquil, avocado chicken salad, Joe Biden Demands Donald Trump Release Chris Christie Back Into the Wilds of New Jersey.

Tuesday soundtrack. Tilts, Beatles, Anvil, Tom Petty, Cerebral Ballzy, McRad, Trans Am, J Church.

Monday, March 7, 2016

march seventh

Five for March 7th:

Bernie 2016. Sanders takes the Kansas, Nebraska and Maine caucuses over the weekend. Onward and upward.

Fun weekend. Highlights included cosmic bowling with Jane, backyard BBQ with Brian and Abby, Thee Fine Lines at Foam, solo skate sesh at Webster, spring nature walk, and a couple of trips to CHP.

Precipitation. When they said this was going to be a rainy week, they weren’t lying. No sooner had I backed down the driveway than the raindrops began to fall. UPDATE: I wrote that this morning and now it’s super nice out. That’s what I get for dragging my feet on posting.

Cool stuff. How Frankie Hill's Japan Over a Gap in 'Propaganda' Changed Skateboarding, SNL Racists for Trump, new patio umbrella, Team Negative One: the Star Wars George Lucas doesn’t want you to see, pair of Vic Firth Keith Moon signature sticks.

E-drums. Going in to Scheffer’s this week for another round of repairs. You’d think that a piece of electronic equipment that's the sole purpose is being beaten repeatedly with a stick would have better soldering points.

Friday, March 4, 2016

march fourth

Five for March 4th:

Old man alert. Some initial plans are coming together for a fortieth-birthday get-together of my old neighborhood friends. Now, I don't care about turning 40 and put no stock in age, but man, thinking about all of us being 40 is absolutely crazy.

30 for 30. As disinterested in sports as I generally am, I can’t get enough of these ESPN documentaries. The new one on the ’85 Chicago Bears is streaming on Netflix and is completely awesome.

Stuntin’. Brought the BMX in for a little afternoon flatland riding in the parking lot. Need to get the blood pumping today.

Cool stuff. Donuts at work, free NYXL strings, Backyard Trails Party, Hosoi deck delivery today, 5 countries that will welcome Americans in the wake of a potential Trump presidency, the bathroom at Seoul Taco, morning space adventures.

Weekend action. Thee Fine Lines at Foam, Clifton Park action, hanging with the family, backyard BBQ with Brian and crew, birthday party with Jane, skate sesh, opening the windows.

Thursday, March 3, 2016

march third

Five for March 3rd:

Vintage Vinyl. Stopped by yesterday afternoon for a few. Their bargain bins are overflowing right now. If I’d had more time, I would’ve dug around a bit more. There’s got to be some good stuff hiding in there.

Haro Freestyler. Don’t know how the existence of this website got by me, but it’s pretty much the most comprehensive resource ever for old Haro BMX junkies. Check out the catalog section. Droolworthy.

Rager. Great time at Ramp Riders last night with Jesse, Chris’ P and C, and Brians H and F. The gnar was shredded, and the final session of my ten-pass was used up just in time for Spring.

Cool stuff. Gogi bowls at Seoul Taco, Powell Peralta Frankie Hill Bulldog reissues, fingerboard bowl action at work, Florida vacation bumped up, Ride BMX for the better.

Contacts. Officially on the ass-end of my last pair. I guess I shouldn’t be complaining, as I made my last box of six-month’s worth last almost a year and a half. Small price to pay for not having to worry about glasses flying off.

Wednesday, March 2, 2016

march second

Five for March 2nd:

Five years of Henry. According to FB, we got Henry five years ago this week. Little dude has been with us through apartment life, marriage, two kids, home ownership, and much more. Here’s to many more years of somehow taking up the whole bed.

Skate sesh. Tonight at Ramp Riders with the Old Bones Brigade. Should be a fun one.

Hamburger: The Motion Picture. Streaming on Dailymotion. It’s probably been 15 years since I’ve seen it. Just made the top of my watch list.

Cool stuff. Afternoon drinks at 3 Kings, weekend warm-up, the many pained expressions of Chris Christie, Sepultura on Spotify, at home with Mike “Hucker” Clark, incredible morning sunrise, twelve pack of Summer Shandy.

America 2016. Republican rallies have now literally devolved into Klan gatherings. I’ve never been more embarrassed to be an American.

Tuesday, March 1, 2016

march first

Five for March 1st:

March at last. Daylight savings ETA twelve days, start of Spring ETA nineteen days. Death to winter.

BMX. Stopped for a quick ten-minute flatland session on the way home last night. Worked on fire hydrants and came closer than ever to actually sticking one.

Tuna Bib. My daughter’s name for Bib Fortuna may be the sweetest and funniest thing I’ve ever heard.

Cool stuff. Chori Pollo and Pacifico with Brian, work (Kaldi) coffee restock, gumball machine army truck, my cold is essentially gone, Haro old school decal kits, Robert Reich: the GOP establishment has destroyed itself, military may refuse to follow Trump’s orders if he becomes president.

Tuesday soundtrack. Kyuss, Baroness, Shadows Fall, Television, Ramones, the Pavers, Red Fang, High on Fire.
