may thirty-first

Five for May 31st:

George’s first birthday. Celebrated on the back patio with perfect weather, close family, good food, lots of presents, and a lion cake. George had a blast despite being a little overwhelmed. Really couldn’t have gone any better.

Thundercats. Started watching the original series on Amazon Prime for the first time since it actually aired 31 years ago. Surprisingly fun, and a lot more watchable than some of the other cartoons of that era.

How I Figured Out Christianity is Not Real. A detailed account of one person's 30-year ascension to into sanity and rational thought, written with a level of eloquence and non-condescension I couldn't possibly achieve.

Cool stuff. Two JB skate sessions, La Poma with Nick Bruce and Colton Walker, backyard bikes, GX1000, Ranchito, feels like Monday but it’s actually Tuesday, Magic House with the crew.

Tuesday soundtrack. Bad Brains, Suicidal Tendencies, Band of Horses, Samhain, Bad Religion, No Means No.

may twenty-sixth

Five for May 26th:

George turns one. Taking tomorrow off to celebrate our little dude’s first birthday. It’s been amazing to watch him morph from helpless infant to independent toddler in such a short period of time. He’s also the sweetest guy ever. Couldn’t be prouder.

Blues blues. Well, that was ugly. But hey, we got further than anyone thought we would.

Dear offended Christian. I’m tired of you being more outraged by red coffee cups and department store restrooms than by poverty and racism and gun violence. I’m tired of reminding you that the number of times Jesus spoke about gender identity and sexual orientation in the Gospels is zero. I’m tired of a Christianity that is making me more and more embarrassed to be associated with it.

Cool stuff. New issue of Thrasher (with free stickers), Tamale Man tamales from the farmer’s market, dental flossers, lunch with Tom, Sanders/Trump debate is apparently happening, Bob Haro’s Freestyle Moves archived on issuu, Chrome Ball Chris Senn interview.

Four-day weekend action. George’s birthday party, skate session with Brian and Andy, hanging out with the kids while Lisa road trips to Springfield, deep-cleaning the basement, riding bikes, yardwork.

may twenty-fifth

Five for May 25th:

R.I.P. Walter. Our stalwart orange cat passed away unexpectedly yesterday at the ripe old age of twelve years and some change. We’ll miss you, buddy.

NAMM. Looks like I’ll be sitting out the summer show this year after all. Kind of a relief, actually. Didn’t seem like it was going to be financially worth it and being away from the kids for days on end is a huge bummer.

Freestyler. Sacrilege? Lipstick on a pig? Whatever, my 2015 price point daily rider Haro just got an '88 style makeover.

Cool stuff. Dennis McCoy boomerang tutorial, breakfast sandwich from McArthur’s, $1.99 record scores, Tom Petty Running Down a Dream documentary, 2016 Boozer jam footage, CWE Whole Foods is open.

Wednesday soundtrack. Black Tusk, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Aerosmith, The Loudmouths, Teengenerate, the Sword, Fleetwood Mac, ELO.

Monday, May 23, 2016

may twenty-third

Five for May 23rd:

Weekend highlights. Drinks with friends at Urban Chestnut for Lisa’s birthday, George’s first haircut, Taste of Maplewood, MCF and SFYYR at Off Broadway, taking Jane to Toys R Us, backyard bbq with the Fairs and co.

Nick Menza. Rust in peace.

Game of Thrones. I've still never seen an episode of this show, so my life remains relatively unruined. I do feel for all of you though.

Cool stuff. Won a hundred bucks this morning, fresh bag of Sumatra, Schlafly Summer Lager season, pre-work railslides, Blues/Sharks series tied.

This is how fascism comes to America. Not with jackboots and salutes (although there have been salutes, and a whiff of violence) but with a television huckster, a phony billionaire, a textbook egomaniac “tapping into” popular resentments and insecurities, and with an entire national political party — out of ambition or blind party loyalty, or simply out of fear — falling into line behind him.

may twentieth

Five for May 20th:

Birthday girl. Happy (early) birthday to my amazing wife, who turns thirty-something this coming Sunday. Wait, twenty-something? It’s hard to tell. Here’s to many, many more!

Decaled up. Finally got some ’87 Haro Sport repro stickers on the way to throw on my daily rider BMX, which is not actually an ’87 Haro Sport but IS a Haro and will look rad with some period decals. I’m a sucker for aesthetics.

Working for the clampdown. All Clash, all day.

Cool stuff. Seoul Taco with work buds, awesome Hill redevelopment plans, free five bucks, Blue Bunny mini cones, CHP with Janey.

Weekend action. Busy one coming up: Lisa’s birthday celebration at Urban Chestnut, Middle Class Fashion record release at Off Broadway, Clifton Park perennial exchange, kid party at Brian’s, and all manner of other stuff. Hopefully squeeze in some skating somewhere.

may ninteenth

Five for May 19th:

Youth gone wild. Got to spend an extra hour or so with the kids this morning and drop Jane off at preschool for the first time ever- two days shy of her last day of school for the summer. Better late than never.

Chai tea. Trying to de-coffee my day a bit. It was starting to get a bit out of hand, even by my standards.

Spotify Free. Did they do away with the ads? Did they finally realize they’ll never break me? Did my Spotify somehow develop the best glitch ever? Not sure, but I don’t think I’ve heard one in a few weeks, and I’m not on premium. No complaints here.

Cool stuff. Awesome weather, MCF article in St. Louis Magazine, The Curse of the Ramones, Callin’ Oates is back, salmon BLT, Webster session.

Late entries. Seems like getting these things posted in the mornings is becoming next to impossible these days.

Wednesday, May 18, 2016

may eighteenth

Five for May 18th:

Nice weather. Finally a day of sun and dryness following three miserable days of pissing cold rain. It’s nice to actually get a spring, but I’m not a fan of seeing your breath outdoors in May.

Frankenskate. Threw this Schmitt Stix Rip Saw together out of random spare parts in the attic last night. Some semi-retired Indy 139’s, old bones wheels, and a total mishmash of bearings and hardware. Actually came out looking awesome.

Plan Nine. Word on the street is it’s reopening this Friday, apparently now owned by Future Sk8 (maybe that’s what it’s called now?) This whole thing seemed pretty up in the air for a number of reasons- the Mills getting sold off recently being one of them. Hope it pans out, as I really only skated there one time.

Cool stuff. Can of Send Help and a steak Gogi bowl, Jane’s riser pad art, lunchtime roll-around, vintage ’99 Side One Dummy zine.

Nothing gets past me. I've been a fan of 3rd Rock From The Sun for almost twenty years and I just last night put together the sub-joke of the male characters together being named Tom, Dick and Harry.

may seventeenth

Five for May 17th:

Bad start. Monday was sort a bummer- two sick kids, came in early for a meeting that didn’t happen, it rained all day, and my iPhone charger shit the bed. Here’s to a better rest of the week (for everyone).

Trade-N-Games. As an avid fan of both the Dreamcast and the Intellivision, it looks like I might need to take a little road trip down to Fenton pretty soon and check this place out. Side note: that’s the first and last you’ll hear of me potentially road-tripping to Fenton.

TBT. Hard to believe it's been four years since my Facebook feed was clogged with Donna Summer videos.

Cool stuff. Hillary Clinton Wouldn’t Be Winning If Jon Stewart Was Still on Air, fresh setup, George turns one in ten days, seventeen amazing facts about He-Man, binge-watching The Hive with Jane, iPhone photo dump, Seoul Taco with Brian and Katie.

Tuesday soundtrack. Sub Society, High on Fire, Rezillos, Phil Collins, the Muffs, Motorhead, Early Man.

Monday, May 16, 2016

may sixteenth

Five for May 16th:

The final frontier. Spent almost all day Saturday cutting down the massive twisted forest of vines, weeds and small trees that has been growing into and around the back fence for about 20 years. Two sore wrists and thirteen giant contractor bags of yard waste later and it’s a done deal, completing what was the last major backyard project we had to tackle.

Sick baby blues. George came down with a fever today. Poor dude has had a rough week or so. A little rest and relaxation and he should be good to go.

Skating. Much-needed session at JB yesterday with the crew. I was kind of bummed on my setup which was a bit of a buzzkill, but it was a fun time nonetheless.

Cool stuff. Kebabs on the grill, free Motorhead posters, Intelligentsia at McArthur’s, The Putin-Trump kiss being shared around the world, first garden haul of the year, haircut, new issue of Decibel, skinny vanilla latte.

Conference finals. Close win over San Jose last night, but a win nonetheless to kick off the next series.

Friday, May 13, 2016

may thirteenth

Five for May 13th:

Thursday night recap. Met up with the family at the park after work, went to SoHa for dinner, put George to bed, skated Deer Creek curbs for a bit, met up with Brian, caught Clutch and Lamb of God, and closed out the night with a few beers backstage with Brian, Randy Blythe, Pepper Keenan, and Chris Adler. Don’t know how much more awesome you can pack into a 6-hour span.

Richie Jackson 2016. If you don’t like this clip, you don’t like skateboarding. Or things that are entertaining.

Friday the 13th. Chhk chhk chhk chhk. Ahh ahh ahh ahh.

Cool stuff. Vans Pool Party coverage, getting paid, Last Days of the T-1 Ramp part two, awesome weather, lunch sesh, donuts at work, Powell Peralta Rat Bones sweatpants.

Weekend action. An essentially plan-free weekend coming up after a packed week. Some skating, some lawn mowing, hanging out with the kids and whatever else.

Thursday, May 12, 2016

may twelfth

Five for May 12th:

Misfits. Danzig is apparently reuniting with Jerry Only and Doyle for a few legitimate Misfits shows at Riotfest. Pretty unbelievable. Just need to nail down Arthur Googy to complete the Walk Among Us-era lineup abd call it a day.

Grosso’s Loveletters to Skateboarding. Season seven starts today. Best web series in the history of Youtube. Special edition Vans Pool Party teaser episode is up now.

Tonight. Hopefully get in some park time with the kids after work, then hitting Corrosion of Conformity/ Clutch/ Lamb of God at the Pageant with Brian, VIP style. Should be good if I can stay awake.

Cool stuff. Polar and GX1000 skate DVD burns from Andy, free star picks and set of Cleartones, FBM Lost Bowl jam, Airstream Nest caravans, dots from Jane.

Hulu. Good riddance to this slow, lumbering, commercial-filled piece of internet horseshit. Can’t believe I actually paid money for that.

Wednesday, May 11, 2016

may eleventh

Five for May 11th:

Janeyisms. To quote Lisa: We got a new dishwasher yesterday. The only person who is sad about this is Jane, who said: “I'm going to miss our old dishwasher. We had some good times."

I’m With Hillary. I don't care if there is a candidate out there who has fought to keep money out of politics. It doesn't matter that this candidate has fought to limit the power of corporations over people. It doesn't matter that this candidate consistently stands up and fights for the oppressed. It doesn't matter that he is consistently on the right side of causes, even when those causes are unpopular. It doesn't matter. No, it doesn't matter because I'm with her.

Stomach bug. Came on strong yesterday afternoon and basically took me out of commission all evening. A couple of Ibuprofen, a warm shower and 8.5 hours of sleep later and I finally started feeling like a human again.

Cool stuff. Demolition - Dennis Enarson's Signature Rig Line Video, morning roll, The Last Days of Doel: A Ghost Town in Purgatory, as people get richer religion will get smaller and eventually disappear, Sanders can still win the nomination fair and square, Blues game seven tonight.

Strange Brew. My office feng shui just increased by about 1000%.

Tuesday, May 10, 2016

may tenth

Five for May 10th:

Dishwasher blues. The bad news: the piece of crap in our kitchen finally keeled over and died last night, after many long months of barely-functioning. The good news: a brand new Bosch with a stainless steel interior and calcium filter was purchased first thing this morning and Lisa’s dad already installed it.

Guitar repair. Thanks to Ricky for the top-notch repair/setup job he did on my Gibson. Probably the first shop work that guitar has seen since it rolled off the line in 1981. Plays like I never knew it could.

Sickness. George, myself and Lisa all came down with some sort of stomach bug over the last few days that has hit with varying degrees of severity. The only one left standing is Jane (knock on wood).

Cool stuff. Sumatra restock at work, night drumming, Glasgow To Genoa, Bernie Sanders teaches Stephen Colbert to never give up, The Day the Republican Party died, back-deck gate completion.

Tuesday soundtrack. Iron Maiden, Mastodon, Riddle of Steel, Red Fang, Early Man, Dead Moon.

Monday, May 9, 2016

may ninth

Five for May 9th:

Mother’s day. A happy belated one to Lisa, the best and most dedicated mom I’ve ever met, and of course my own mother, who is a close second.

E-cymbal. Heading out to Firebrand this afternoon to pick up the cymbal from my electronic kit, which has undergone yet another surgery to stay working. Thanks to Brian for the hookup. Stoked to play some stuff again.

Around the house. Lawn mowed, poison ivy sprayed, weeds whacked, garden bed tilled and reinforced, and a good chunk of the giant wall of weeds and ivy against the back fence have been removed (with quite a bit more to go).

Cool stuff. Backyard freestyle session, morning curbslides, Bob’s Burgers, High on Fire on Spotify, final Grosso/Lucero Weekend Buzz.

Frontline score. Picked up a package of Henry’s (off-brand) flea and tick medicine at Schnucks for what I thought was $13 on a clearance shelf. However, when scanned, it rang up at one dollar. That stuff is normally almost thirty bucks.

Friday, May 6, 2016

may sixth

Five for May 6th:

Delmar & Skinker. Finally back open after two excruciating and ultimately pointless weeks of closure. Hope that novelty choo-choo is worth it (it’s not).

The hill of weeds. Figured out that my reel mower on its highest setting will effectively cut the dreaded weed hill between our driveway and our neighbor’s fence. Precarious, but doable.

Bike restoration. This guy did with this old Diamondback Hot Streak what I have wanted to do with at least three trashed BMX bikes that have made their way through my basement over the last few years (and of course, never accomplished).

Cool stuff. 8 Dollar Deli opening in the Loop, remembering to bring lunch, office laughs, morning curbslides, playground gifts from Jane, Paul Ryan won’t back Trump, patio drinks with Brian.

Weekend action. A couple of mother’s day events, Maplewood Stringfest, hanging out with the kids, mowing the back yard and hopefully getting a skate session in somewhere.

Thursday, May 5, 2016

may fifth

Five for May 5th:

Sneakers. Finally got a chance to watch my $1.25 DVD last night. This movie still totally holds up.

King of the Road. That time of year again. Live the madness (vicariously).

Via Will McAvoy. "Reminder: Every Republican Speaker of the House who oversaw the impeachment of Bill Clinton has now been found to be part of a sex scandal."

Cool stuff. Cementland 2016 photo gallery, Jeff Grosso’s “birthdays suck” video, 10 skate gimmicks that actually worked, Jane school videos, French dip, backyard BMX.

Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it.

Wednesday, May 4, 2016

may fourth

Five for May 4th:

Under the blade. Watched We Are Twisted F***ing Sister! on Netflix last night. Super in-depth documentary with a heavy focus on their early days working the club scene. Definitely worth a watch.

Elizabeth Warren on Trump. As usual, she pulls no punches and completely nails it (not that a million people haven’t essentially said this same stuff already).

Blue-tinged bloodbath. That wasn’t even a game last night, it was a televised flogging. Blues in 6. You heard it here first.

Cool stuff. So long Ted Cruz, New Alvarez swag, Bernie wins Indiana, Embassy Henry Gutierrez models, Ranchito with Katie, CHP with the kiddos.

Work. Getting our heads wrapped around the new system. A lot of things are easier, a lot of things are not necessarily harder, but just different, and require a ton more procedural stuff. It’ll all get there. Meanwhile, posts are not getting finished till 4:30.

Tuesday, May 3, 2016

may third

Five for May 3rd:

Dad life. Got some much-needed kid time in last night following a 36 hour stretch of not seeing them. That just never happens anymore.

Frankie Hill. I guess his rejoining Powell Peralta is legit, as he now has a profile on their team page.

Scouting for food. One of the dudes from my childhood Cub Scout den was just named the best chef in the Midwest. Weird world. Den 6 represent.

Cool stuff. Remembering Mirra full video, Sumatra K-Cups, three dollar Cardinals slippers, Bod Boyle “stained glass” reissue, Lucero/Grosso Weekend Buzz part II.

Tuesday soundtrack. Rolling Stones, Tygers of Pan Tang, High On Fire, Party Cannon, Riddle of Steel, Cream.

Monday, May 2, 2016

may second

Five for May 2nd:

NORAD style. My new two-monitor desk setup is making me feel a lot like Dabney Coleman in Wargames, except without the ability to blow up Russia.

Date night. The kids stayed out at the farm last night and Lisa, which meant a trip to Royale for Cubanos and Moscow Mules. That said, can't wait to see them tonight.

New system. Day one of the new operating system at work is today and so far, it’s going better than anyone had anticipated. Stoked.

Cool stuff. HQ Ecopad jams, curb sesh at Deer Creek, bagels at the office, new set of Rib Bones and sheet of grip, quickie at JB.

Around the house. Got the gravel pad by the basement stairs leveled for the eventual move of the shed over to that spot. It’ll be nice to get that space filled in and the precarious drop to the basement door blocked off.
