october thirty-first

Five for October 31st:

Halloween. Three Halloween parties over the past three days, and trick or treating tonight. This year we have Jane the witch and George as Yoda, or some sort of little googly-eyed monster if he can’t keep the Yoda costume on.

Animal Chin part 3. Recreating the Invert Photo is up and totally worth a watch. I wish this series would continue forever.

Mom’s pad. After more than a year of displacement due to a fire and many ensuing months of construction delays, there are just a couple more days till mom can officially move back into her condo. Totally happy for her.

Cool stuff. Candy overload, Thrasher Hallween Hellride 2016 footage, Anna’s mac n’ cheese, JB Saturday session, pumpkin carving,

Near miss. A boxed trombone literally fell through the ceiling near my desk today and landed about a foot from where I was sitting. The dangers of working in the music industry.

october twenty-eighth

Five for October 28th:

At long last. Footage of the OG Bones Brigade skating the newly-constructed Chin Ramp at Woodward is live, and it’s fucking glorious, from the quadruple handplant on the spine to the period-correct t-shirt colors. I just wish Guerrero had taken a few runs.

Pageviews. This blog is swiftly approaching the 100K mark. Who the hell is looking at this dumb thing?

Photo op. For over forty years, this guy photographed the same buildings as he watched them decline.

Cool stuff. Breakfast shakes, Enforcer Radio on Pandora, new set of mechanical pencils, morning curbslides, peppermint tea, unseen footage of Mike McGill doing some of the first McTwists ever.

Weekend action. Two Halloween parties, helping mom get her condo dialed back in, pumpkin carving in North County, skate session at JB, last lawn mow of the year.

october twenty-seventh

Five for October 27th:

Farm eggs. We hadn’t had fresh, non-store bought eggs in the house since our neighbors (who had chickens) moved away. We got some from our CSA and they’re unreal. Don’t skimp.

Game six anniversary. Hard to believe this was five years ago already- I remember that night like it was yesterday. Still one of the craziest things I’ve ever witnessed.

Rolling. The fleet in the backyard has grown to a wagon, a scooter, a big wheel, a tricycle, Jane’s two-wheeler, and a couple of small push cars, to say nothing of the 2-3 strollers always back there at any given time.

Cool stuff. Jane’s Halloween parade, morning roll, homemade breakfast sandwiches, Brian’s 7 lb solid chocolate pumpkin, Ranchito Thursday, summer shorts re-sew.

Facebook notifications. Are they all screwy for anyone else? I’m seeing maybe half the activity I used to on my own stuff, can’t turn off certain notifications, all sorts of weirdness. It’s the same on my phone or computer.

Wednesday, October 26, 2016

october twenty-sixth

Five for October 26th:

30 years of Animal Chin. Video number one has finally been released, and speculation that the Chin Ramp was being rebuilt to spec at Woodward appears to have been correct, to the surprise of no one. Is it permanent? Is there a tunnel in the ramp? So many questions. Beyond rad any way you look at it.

Quote of the day. “It has never occurred to me as a candidate to figure out a way to deny the vote to people because they might vote against me. People who do that are political cowards”. –Bernie Sanders

Indians win game one. Looks like Jobu came through.

Cool stuff. Trump’s walk of fame star destroyed with a sledgehammer, the great stamp-out, good leftovers, Marco Rubio booed offstage.

Halloween. Looks like it’s going to be the first dry, warm-ish Halloween in recent memory. It’ll be nice not to have to worry about Jane slipping on wet stairs the entire time. Bonus: my mom will be at the house to hand out candy.

Tuesday, October 25, 2016

october twenty-fifth

Five for October 25th:

Space adventures. This morning Jane and I visited the gold candy planet, the Easter egg planet, the birthday party planet, and a few others before finally landing on the diaper changing planet.

Freshie. Is there anything better than a baby blue Steve Caballero ‘86 Chinese Dragon and a crisp new pair of Rib Bones? I think not.

Upcoming shows. Jag-Wires at Sinkhole, Flotsam and Jetsam at Firebird, Essential Knots at Foam, the Nudge at some Legion hall in Illinois.

Cool stuff. Listening to George learning words, new Powell stickers, sweet roll mini subs, evening at the park, SNL’s “Black Jeopardy!” sketch was the most astute analysis of American politics in 2016, leftover quiche, morning roll.

Tuesday soundtrack. Elvis Costello, Leviathan, Led Zeppelin, T. Rex, New Pornographers, Embrace, Velvet Underground, High On Fire, Supergrass.

Monday, October 24, 2016

october twenty-fourth

Five for October 24th:

Wedded bliss. Congrats to Andy and Kelli for not just tying the knot, but also pulling off what was without doubt the fastest wedding to ever come together. Awesome food, tons of friends, kid-friendly and super casual. Cheers.

Beach bums. I always forget there’s literally a beach twenty-five minutes from our house. Took the kids there yesterday for some sun and sandcastle building. We need to go there a lot more.

Land Shark Lager. It’s Lisa’s favorite beer ever. Who knew?

Cool stuff. Jane’s school Halloween parade, maple bacon donuts, fives of people show up for Curt Schilling’s sad Trump rally, Street Plant Public Domain and Powell Vato Rat reissues, hot-tubbing.

Cubs vs. Indians.
Obviously bummed the Cards didn't make it, but man, talk about a series. Should be fun.

Friday, October 21, 2016

october twenty-first

Five for October 21st:

Freshly shorn. Close-shaved last night for the first time since last spring, when I was in Tom’s wedding. Had to reset the facial hair. Actually feels really good- might start changing it up a bit.

Internet issues. My interweb at work is down for some reason, so if you see this, it means it either came back up or I posted it from my iPhone.

Fall weather. The next six to seven days are looking unreal- mid seventies, sunshine, crisp and humidity-free. Definitely going to be some bike rides in next week.

Cool stuff. Pumpkin bread at work, new set of rib bones, chori pollo, morning drums, phone photo dump, 5ANs.

Weekend action. Leaving a half day early today to hang out with the kids while Lisa is in Grafton for the night, Andy’s wedding at Tower Grove, hanging out with friends, neighbors and kids, early Sunday skate session at JB.

Thursday, October 20, 2016

october twentieth

Five for October 20th:

Chesterfield Mall. Word on the street is, the writing is on the wall for it to be closed completely. This is almost inconceivable to me, as it was the spot of more junior high and high school Friday and Saturday nights than I can even recall, to say nothing of a million childhood memories.

HRC playing Trump like a cheap fiddle. It’s almost like it was too easy.

Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer. Mind blowing. Looks like I’ll be picking up an Xbox One sometime in the next year.

Cool stuff. Pandora Revisited, butternut squash soup, Spitfire Fall ’16, Ranchito Thursday, half day tomorrow.

Summer shorts. They keep ripping, begging for the sweet release of death, and I keep sewing them back up. Waste not, want not. Never mind the fact that it looks like I tore them off the corpse of a homeless person.

Wednesday, October 19, 2016

october nineteenth

Five for October 19th:

What I learned at Father’s night. I’m 10 years old, my favorite food is jelly beans, I like going to Florida, and I have green and blue hair.

Upland ‘89. An hour plus of footage surfaced yesterday documenting some of the last sessions that ever went down at the fabled Pipeline skatepark, courtesy of Jim Gray. Completely awesome.

Must-reads. George Takei’s open letter to America’s young voters, The Unforgivables: Donald Trump’s Top Collaborators, The Hate Comes Home to Roost.

Cool stuff. Organic Frosted Flakes, Caballero Chinese Dragon blem + stickers, Emergen-C resupply, Stephen Egerton interview, Seoul Taco burritos, new issue of Decibel.

Rain rain. Looks like my afternoon skate plans have been washed away.

Tuesday, October 18, 2016

october eighteenth

Five for October 18th:

Tonight. Father’s night at Jane’s preschool. Can’t believe a year has already elapsed since the last one. Should be a good time hanging out with my girl.

Queen. Their previously unreleased fast version of “We Will Rock You” is 110% the most bad assed thing I've ever heard in my life.

Quote of the day. “The most terrifying result of drug-testing Trump would be that he’s not on drugs.” -Andy Borowitz

Cool stuff. These guys, evening at Clifton Park, Essential Knots debut show at Foam in a few weeks, Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2017, lunch with Brian, Powell Slash Skates decks.

Tuesday soundtrack. Judge, El Caco, Sacred Reich, Terrorizer, Orchid, Gang Green, Motorhead, Hellacopters, Cerebral Ballzy, McRad, Tom Petty.

Monday, October 17, 2016

october seventeenth

Five for October 17th:

Weekend highlights. In no particular order: Jane’s first ballet recital plus her final birthday week celebration at the farm, buying/putting up Halloween decorations, swimming at the Y, early Saturday session at JB with Chris and Brian.

Drums. Slowly but surely tweaking the new Alesis to get it just right. It’s pretty close at this point, both in terms of positioning and dialing in the exact right kit. Still getting used to it, but it’s eons above my old one no matter how you slice it.

Shonen Knife. Apparently they played at Firebird last night and I totally missed it. I have no idea how this show was so completely off my radar, but I’m kicking myself.

Cool stuff. Cookies and K-cups at work, new M.O.D.O.K figure, impromptu dinner at Las Palmas, $62 cash spiff, last gasp of summer weather, Retrowave.

Grosso’s Loveletters. New rant and rave is up now, and of course is hilarious and awesome. Gratuitous droppage of F-bombs (as usual) in case you’re working.

Friday, October 14, 2016

october fourteenth

Five for October 14th:

Quote of the day. "I can't believe I'm saying a candidate for president of the United States has bragged about sexually assaulting women.” -Michelle Obama

Caffeine. Snatched up some Starbucks Sumatra k-cups and a bag of Seattle’s Best #5 on the way in today- in my mind, the two best non-artisan coffees you can get at any normal grocery store. Trust me, I’ve done the research.

November Coming. Apparently a visit from our LP rep, who also happens to be Steve Zing from Samhain/Danzig, is happening next month. Should be pretty cool to hang out with that guy for a while.

Cool stuff. This goofball, Know Your Roll – 2017 Lineage Master/Sport frames, payday, 2.5-mile run at the gym last night, Blues win hope opener.

Weekend action. Sunny, 80-degree couple of days coming up. Plans include a skate session or two, trip to the farm for Jane’s final birthday week shindig, possible party at a coworker’s place, and trying not to get sick.

Thursday, October 13, 2016

october thirteenth

Five for October 13th:

Last night. Had a blast at Happy Joe’s for Jane’s birthday night celebration. She scored a stuffed animal, a couple of Koosh creatures and a high-bounce ball and was good to go.

Blues. 1st in the Central Division, handily won the season opener against the Blackhawks, home opener tonight. Stanley cup, here we come.

Horror house. "These are all very nice, but I'm really looking for something with more of a ‘Winchester Mystery House meets possessed homicidal Victorian clown doll, American Horror Story, descent into insanity’ sort of vibe. Something cozy, where rooms change size and disappear on their own and every night is a battle to make it to the dawn when the doors finally unlock themselves. Got anything like that?"

Cool stuff. Bob Dylan awarded Nobel Prize in literature, busting out the new jacket, pastry crisps, afternoon roll-around.

Raise the roof. Our front parking lot is jammed with trucks and cranes right now- and is out of service for the foreseeable future- as we get a much-needed new roof put on the building. Here’s hoping we don’t get collapsed on.

Wednesday, October 12, 2016

october twelfth

Five for October 12th:

Happy birthday Jane. Happy 4th birthday to my number one girl. May you always have a band-aid on your chin and butterfly wings on your back. I love you.

Drums. Finished building and plugging in my new electronic drum kit last night with one minute to spare before George went to bed, so I had to hold off banging around on them till this morning. Can’t wait to mess with it more tonight and actually play along with some stuff.

Zoltar revisited. The nonsense-spewing, bleak-future predicting Donald Trump Zoltar machine popping up at random spots around New York is the best thing you’ll see all week.

Cool stuff. Breakfast pizza, R.I.P. G.O.P., Andrew Reynolds Life on Video Berrics series, Three Kings with Brian, north-south Metrolink plan awarded 375K grant, Happy Joe's tonight with the birthday girl.

NAMM. Flights to and from Southern California in January are booked, and for the first time ever I get to come back on Sunday, meaning not only do I get to go out Saturday night and sleep in the next morning, I also don’t have to break down the booth or miss a day of work flying back. Stoked.

Tuesday, October 11, 2016

october eleventh

Five for October 11th:

Sick girl. Jane has spent the last couple of days battling a fever, but she’s feeling a bit better with the help of some children’s Tylenol and copious consumption of rainbow popsicles. Hoping she gets back to 100% soon.

Out for delivery. My new set of e-drums should be arriving today. Can’t wait to take a spin on them. Also have the Slime Balls carpet for the attic skateshop coming in. Bam.

Quote of the day. "Perhaps we’ve always been heading to this historic moment. The first female presidential nominee versus the human embodiment of every backward, condescending, Mad Men–esque boys’ club attitude that has ever existed, rolled into one giant, salivating, dick size–referencing, pussy-grabbing warthog in a red power tie." -John Oliver

Cool stuff. Morning roll, January NAMM travel planning, (more) leftover pizza, new room found at the Winchester Mystery House, Donald Trump is blowing up the Republican Party.

Tuesday soundtrack. Elephant Tree, Vektor, Dead Man, Carbonas, Sick Of It All, Dead Moon, Windhand, Monolord, Sonny Vincent, Tankard, Common Enemy.

Monday, October 10, 2016

october tenth

Five for October 10th:

Birthday girl. Janey technically turns four on Wednesday, but her big party happened yesterday. Lots of good friends and family, pizza, a piƱata, strawberry cake, and perfect weather came together for an unforgettable day.

Sinking ship. Watching the far-right's joke of a presidential nominee going down in flames over the weekend as party leaders frantically scrambled to distance themselves from the monster they spent the last eight years creating was a great joy, capped off with his cringe-inducing and pathetic debate performance. What a fucking slimeball.

Making memories. There are a few moments from my life that I know I’ll never forget, and taking Jane down the street to learn to ride her new two-wheeler the morning of her fourth birthday party is one of them.

Cool stuff. New issue of Ride BMX, Rumble in Ramona 2016, watching George learning to talk, leftover pizza, JB Saturday session with some of the old man crew, banana bread, Dixon wristband, Donald Trump Makes History With Zero Major Newspaper Endorsements.

Paying it forward. Gave Brian my old electronic drum kit, left a Starbucks card with ninety cents on it with the barista for the next person to use, gave a homeless guy a buck.

Friday, October 7, 2016

october seventh

Five for October 7th:

Bike commute. On top of it being a record day for riding in weather-wise, the traffic, construction, and lane-closures surrounding Wash U for the debate on Sunday is maddening for anyone having to drive through it. So long, suckers.

Drums and other noises. Scored a new electronic drum set online yesterday for mega cheap. My old one is officially beaten beyond repair, plus it’s just way too sparse for the amount I use it. The new setup is eight pieces with forty different kit settings. I'll finally have a ride cymbal! Can’t wait.

Burned out. The amount of dead light bulbs around our house is reaching peak level (I think there’s one left working in the entryway chandelier). I don’t know why but I’m probably lazier about changing bulbs than anything else on earth, which is saying something.

Cool stuff. Fall weather returning, Tom Remillard Product Pillage, cracking open the Trooper 666 brew, Haro Ryan Nyquist XX pro model frame interview, popcorn Friday.

Weekend action. Jane’s 4th birthday party (number one), assembling dining room chairs, early morning skate session, mowing the lawn, swimming at the Y.

Thursday, October 6, 2016

october sixth

Five for October 6th:

The Atlantic endorses HRC. Andrew Seidel sums it up: “Pause to consider this: The Atlantic has previously only endorsed two candidates for office, both during critical, pivotal moments in American history. Donald Trump is a genuine threat to the United States. He is also a danger to global peace and global security. If he wins, we all lose.”

Summer is back. Mid 80’s and sunshine today after a nice week or so of hoodie weather. Not complaining.

Heavy hitters. The fact that Christian Hosoi, Ray Barbee and Matt Hensley all share the same birthday has to be some sort of cosmic anomaly.

Cool stuff. McGill wheels delivery, afternoon skate at White Birch, grande dark roast, Nigel Sylvester Doesn’t Need BMX Contests, Jane school art.

Winter viewing. Just in time for the dark and dreary months: new seasons of The Arrow, The Flash, Family Guy, New Girl, plus the entire Friday Night Lights series which we just started and a ton of Walking Dead/FTWD to catch up on.

Wednesday, October 5, 2016

october fifth

Five for October 5th:

Night moves. Impromptu session went down at WG last night with Andy and Shawn. More or less had the whole place to ourselves for most of the time, and some raging occurred. Good stuff.

The Onion. Been wondering what direction they’d go now that Joe Biden’s VP gig is almost over? Wonder no more.

Better than nothing. Lisa is currently plugged in on my ancient Samsung pseudo-smartphone while we search for her missing iPhone. Pretty primitive, but at least she’s not missing calls and texts- and it’s free.

Cool stuff. Brian Anderson Epicly Later’d, two-dollar Tuesday at SoHa, new chairs for the dining room table, Daredevil season two on Netflix, amazing knockoff Halloween costumes.

Quote of the day. “If Pence says anything that sounds like it makes sense, remember he signed a bill to require women to hold funerals for their miscarriages.” -Caissie St. Onge

Tuesday, October 4, 2016

october fourth

Five for October 4th:

Stuckmeyer Farm. Had a blast with Jane and her preschool class at the pumpkin patch today. Went on a hayride, braved a giant maze, hit the playground, and scored a couple of free pumpkins for the front porch. Best times.

Wake-up call. George was up shrieking at 5:15 this morning. Sadly, this isn’t much earlier than we normally get up.

Skating. Snuck in a quickie at Webster on the way in today. What the hell, I scheduled a half day, I may as well get the most out of it.

Cool stuff. Kev’s Kreations: the Roskopp Ripper, new issue of Thrasher, Eric Dressen Weekend Buzz, this handsome dude.

Tuesday soundtrack. Pentagram, OFF!, Sweet Savage, Dirtbombs, Bolt Thrower, Bad Brains, Witchery, elder, Celtic Frost, 7 Seconds, Mondo Generator, Zero Boys.

Monday, October 3, 2016

october third

Five for October 3rd:

October. Eventful month coming up, with Jane’s fourth birthday celebration(s), Andy and Kelli’s wedding, and Halloween being the chief highlights.

Columbia. Took a quick, action-packed, kid-free road trip west over the weekend with Lisa to see old friends, eat Shakespeare’s, do some record shopping, and stay out late (at least by our standards).

Field trip. Hitting the pumpkin patch tomorrow morning with Jane’s preschool class for some hayrides and apple cider.

Cool stuff. Free tapes, new Slimeballs rug for the attic skateshop, Sunday solo session at Webster Groves, high-end earplug samples at work, hot-tubbing at the Y, haircut, work snack restock, Love Notes episode 4.

Lost cause. Pretty sure the cymbal on my drums has finally been beaten beyond repair, following several operations, re-wires, and re-solders. May be getting near time to pony up for a whole new set. Given the amount of use I’ve gotten out of my current ($75) set, I’d say it's worth it.
