december thirtieth

Five for December 30th:

2016. I don’t gauge the value of a year based on deaths of entertainers or what happens in the political/social spectrums, even though those subjects were certainly distressing over the past twelve months. On a personal level 2016 was a great one: I have a happy, healthy family, tons of good friends and neighbors, a great job, and am able to live comfortably and do things I enjoy regularly. Certainly this year was rough and I don't expect the next four to be any easier, but I hope next year at this time, at the very least, I can focus on similar sentiments, assuming I'm not incinerated in a nuclear holocaust or sent off to a Jewish internment camp. Hope you all can say the same.

Beach cruise. Spending an extended lunch break skating around a beach in Missouri on the sunny second-to-last day of December? Why not.

BMX keeps you young. Dennis McCoy turned 50 yesterday, which is insane, because he’s still ripping like it was 1986.

Cool stuff. Leia Organa: A Critical Obituary, new Dan’s Comp catalog, OG 2-Hip t-shirt, lint shaving, turkey/lettuce wraps, breaking in the Starbucks gift cards, key lime Larabars, morning roll.

3-day weekend action. Pretty nice weekend coming up weather-wise with little in the way of plans. Possibly going to Wild Lights/Firebird, hanging with Lisa on NYE with champagne and Netflix, a skate session or two, hot-tubbing, whatever else. Seeya next year.

december twenty-ninth

Five for December 29th:

Psycho skate. Last night’s garage mini-ramp jam was everything a skate session should be: good people, good vibes, cold beer, Minor Threat played loudly, and tons of ripping. It gets no better. Big thanks to Jason for being a top-notch host.

Whole 30 challenge. With all holiday get-togethers over and no NYE plans to speak of, it starts today. Wish us luck.

2016. It’s actually just a calendar year and doesn't have ears or an agenda- but if I'm wrong and it can hear you, it's obviously a sadist and is taking great pleasure in taunting you every time you ask it to stop killing celebrities on social media.

Cool stuff. Hell Night Human Shelves CD, free balloons for the kids, Chrome Ball Sal Barbier interview, sleeping in, RX bars, morning couch time with Jane and George, Bill Danforth Street Survival.

You’ve been warned. So when it happens, don’t act surprised.

december twenty-eighth

Five for December 28th:

Carrie Fisher. Of all the high-profile deaths that have occurred over the last several months, this is by far the biggest bummer of them all. Unreal.

The L.A. Boys. Probably my favorite skate documentary I’ve seen. Veritable tons of unseen vintage footage, new footage, in-depth interviews, and a light, focused, positive tone that never strays in the somber direction you’re expecting and that every other skate doc has braced you for. Highly recommended.

First time for everything. I did not receive a single bag of peanut M&Ms for the holidays this year. I did, however, get a bag of coffee nut M&Ms which I have to say are pretty awesome.

Cool stuff. Blem Dominator seat for the Haro, nice weather, Christmas is cleaned up, runny eggs over sweet potato cakes, bamboo pillow, morning roll.

Tonight. Home to grab some food and play drums, then hitting up a micro-mini in some garage in Kirkwood with Andy and Brian. Promises to be a good time.

Tuesday, December 27, 2016

december twenty-seventh

Five for December 27th:

Christmas vacation. Started off on a crappy note, with a couple of days of sickness and a 102-degree fever, but ended with a return to physical normality and three trips around the metro area for family visits and general holiday merriment.

Last night. Monday evening old man session at Ramp Riders was a blast, with all the regulars in attendance and a couple of Jolly Roger kids who were absolutely murdering everything in sight, as they do.

Getting healthy. Lisa and I will be doing the Whole 30 challenge in January- although for me it’ll be more like the Whole 20, with NAMM happening late in the month. Gonna try to keep things on the healthy side in California but that might be easier said than done.

Cool stuff. New watch from Lisa, $120 in Starbucks gift cards (plus four bags of coffee), NOS pink Powell Street Wheels, iPhone photo dump, winter walks to the park, The Exact Moment Each of Trump’s Enemies Sold Their Souls, Anna’s Christmas cookies, Bucky Lasek's Buck It part.

Bike plans for 2017. Put black tires, white grips and a white Dominator on the DLX/Sport, complete the Blyther FST with gyro, 990-mount forks, front brakes and four pegs, learn some new tricks.

Thursday, December 22, 2016

december twenty-second

Five for December 22nd:

The annual blow off. Our work holiday party/potluck is already popping, and will go all day until we eventually all trickle out of here early. Traditions.

Down with the sickness. I think I picked up a touch of whatever George has, because I’m definitely not 100%. Ibuprofen is helping, but I’m really glad today isn’t one where I actually have to try to be productive.

Old School Skates. It’s insane to me that in 2016 you can still go onto a website and purchase a NOS, never-ridden Steve Saiz Powell complete for $79. What’s more insane is all the sold-out old stock that site used to have that I somehow missed out on.

Cool stuff. Two $10 Amazon gift cards, Danzig Lost Tracks, cup o’ candy, Hidden Wonders of the Digital World: LOTR online, Freestylin’ Fanatics on Youtube, Sumatra resupply.

Long weekend action. Four days off coming up. Hanging out with every arm of the family somewhere or other, gift giving and receiving, Hell Night EP release at Firebird, skate/BMX session or two, trying not to get sick(er).

Wednesday, December 21, 2016

december twenty-first

Five for December 21st:

Warm-up. Five degree Monday, fifty degree Wednesday, and the days get longer from here on out. Not out of the woods even remotely, but I’ll take it.

NAMM. One month away. Should be a fun show- lots of cool stuff happening at the booth, plans to hang out with California friends, rooming with Brian, seeing some bands, and dining out on the company dime. All this flanked by sunshine and palm trees. That said, I’m going to miss my goobers.

Last minute gift-wrapping. Guess we weren’t the only ones with that idea yesterday evening.

Cool stuff. 2017 day planner stickered up, free BG laptop bag (too bad I don’t own a functioning laptop), Ranchito with the lunch squad, frittatas, J&G ornament, vintage Haro team demo footage on Youtube.

Sick dude blues. George has come down with a stomach bug, which while dampening several pairs of pajamas has not dampened his spirits. Hoping he gets over it soon.

Tuesday, December 20, 2016

december twentieth

Five for December 20th:

Guess it’s official. Not much left to hope for save for a swift impeachment for any number of day-one constitutional violations- though I’m not holding my breath.

61-degree Christmas? Now there’s something to rejoice about.

Vehicular maintenance. Took the g-ride in for a needed oil change this afternoon. I’d been going to Valvoline lately, but Jiffy Lube might have won me over with their combination of free coffee and bucket of Starburst in the waiting room.

Cool stuff. Freestylin’ Magazine sticker pack, leftover spaghetti, Brian’s SLM interview, Martin Strings holiday swag, endless crafts from Jane.

Tuesday soundtrack. Hammerfall, Cauldron, Dead Moon, Wipers, The Gories, Dead Boys, The Dicks, Television Personalities.

Monday, December 19, 2016

december nineteenth

Five for December 19th:

Winter rules. I don't know what I like more: white-knuckling it home on a sheet of ice for an hour long, 5 mile commute only to scrape up the front panel of my car on my retaining wall while sliding down the driveway into the street, or being stuck indoors with two small children for 48 hours because it's four degrees outside and pissing sleet. It's hard to decide. Both are pretty good though. That's to say nothing of the 4:45 pm pitch-darkness.

Skating. Managed to get in a fun two-hour session at Ramp Riders with tons of the crew yesterday and busted out a few old school freestyle moves in the basement. Also re-upped my RR ten pass to get through the next couple of months.

Candy cane hunt. The first annual Clifton Park candy cane hunt was a huge success, and as luck would have it occurred during the lone two-hour stretch of the weekend where being outdoors was tolerable. Super proud of Lisa and crew for putting it together and pulling it off.

Cool stuff. Upcoming four-day weekend, Mi Ranchito gift certificate, weather warm-up on the horizon, lint shaver, 2-Hip shirt, quality George time, Steak n’ ShakE, Aggro Rag Mike Daily interview.

Guitar porn. A prototype smoked lucite Ampeg Dan Armstrong surfaced in the office today, absent a headstock logo and housed in a one of a kind custom cut case. The stuff that’s hiding out in this building never ceases to amaze.

Friday, December 16, 2016

december sixteenth

Five for December 16th:

Free food Friday. Catered holiday lunch at the office today followed by a dinner at Dressell’s tonight for Lisa’s work xmas party. Bam.

The L.A. Boys. This trailer dropped out of nowhere today and looks absolutely killer. I may be more excited for this than the Bones Brigade doc. Stacy Peralta does it again.

Freestylin’. Set up an old school Rodney Mullen freestyle board last night and took it out for a spin this morning. Fun, and as is the case with all skating, much harder than it looks.

Cool stuff. 2017 planner, iphone photo dump, afternoon beers with Brian at 3 Kings, Jane’s kitchen craft table, finding old gift cards with balances left on them.

Weekend action. Date night (of sorts) tonight, Clifton Park candy cane hunt, JagWires at San Loo and/or Essential Knots at Off Broadway, swimming at the Y, hanging with the family, potential Ramp Riders sesh.

Thursday, December 15, 2016

december fifteenth

Five for December 15th:

Pinnacle of high fashion. Jane’s homemade paper tank-top is sure to turn heads on the runway in Milan this spring.

Deep freeze. The high today will barely crack 20, with more arctic nastiness on the horizon. Guess it is almost January. Already over it, and it’s barely begun.

Why I love the internet. Someone keeps photoshopping Trump’s face on the Queen of England and it’s hilarious.

Cool stuff. New issue of Decibel, xmas cookies at work, How Bad Brains Are Staying Positive and Moving Forward, morning roll.

Quote of the day. “Just to put this in perspective, Jimmy Carter sold his fucking peanut farm to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.” -Judd Legum

Wednesday, December 14, 2016

december fourteenth

Five for December 14th:

Challenge of the Flatlanders. Just when I think I’ve certainly seen every obscure 80’s skate or freestyle BMX video to ever get released, I come across something I had no idea existed and is weirdly awesome.

Facts. The law of averages states that somewhere out there, an elderly grandmother is delicately wrapping a Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow bonus edition DVD to give to her soon-to-be disappointed grandson.

Keys to beating winter. Waterproof gloves, fur-lined hat, always warm up the car in the morning, AWD.

Cool stuff. Busting out the green ripper hoodie, Exile on Main Street morning jams, year-end bonuses, white cheddar cheez-its.

Quote of the day. “At one time the US had an institution to prevent someone like Trump from being elected. It was called education.” -Andy Borowitz

Tuesday, December 13, 2016

december thirteenth

Five for December 13th:

Email purge. Cleared about five thousand worthless emails out of my Gmail inbox yesterday. Keeping it lean and clean from here on out.

Foreman grill. I have to admit, I was skeptical at first, but that thing rules.

The sad truth. Donald Trump is officially the biggest loser (literally and figuratively) to ever become president- his margin of defeat now five times bigger than any president that has preceded him. And yet, here we are, watching the man who had millions less votes than his opponent staff his cabinet with wrestling magnates, oil company executives, and climate change deniers while refusing to attend daily intelligence briefings based on his assertion that he's "smart" and doesn't need them. To say "the system is broken" is perhaps the biggest understatement in American history.

Cool stuff. Work coffee resupply, ripper revisited, mornings with George, runny egg on toast, Happy Gilmore on Amazon Prime, Ranchito with Brian and Katie, free Earthtone snare head.

Tuesday soundtrack. Angelwitch, Iced Earth, Enforcer, The Jam, Primal Fear, Early Man, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Judas Priest, Minutemen, Black Flag.

Monday, December 12, 2016

december twelfth

Five for December 12th:

Weekend highlights. Veggie and egg haul from the south city indoor farmer’s market, ramp skating with Brian and Andy, pizza and skee-ball, walking Candy Cane Lane, neighborhood crew out at the playground for one last blast.

Radical Moves. I remember renting this video as a kid and being blown away by how bad it was- yet I watched the whole thing last night. Has to be one of the longest skate videos ever put out if not the longest. People always credit Animal Chin with being the first one with a plot, but I beg to differ.

Old guy skate night. Trying to get the Monday evening wintertime old dude skate sessions at Ramp Riders back up and running in regular rotation. A life saver during the cold months.

Cool stuff. Keith Richards for President t-shirt, fresh pack of boxer shorts, new issue of Ride BMX, morning roll, free lunch, cookies at the office.

Quote of the day. “Fun: imagine if Hillary was elected with Russian help and gave donors cabinet positions and kept the Clinton Foundation and went on a victory tour.” -Bruce Arthur

Friday, December 9, 2016

december ninth

Five for December 9th:

Just a reminder. We have a president-elect that has spent more time since his nomination harassing private citizens on Twitter than he has attending national security briefings.

Dog and pony show. They have the showroom at the office all gussied up like a French whorehouse. I’ve been over there dorking around on gear all morning.

Luke Cage. Finally finished up the first season last night. Excellent show, especially compared to the over-the-top absurdity (and general disappointment) of season two of The Flash.

Cool stuff. Getting paid, four new sets of rails, Ranchito with Tom and Brian, new long-sleeve shirt that isn’t a hoodie, chilly Webster solo session, Thursday night Star Wars with Jane, In The Raw// Santee 2-Hip Meet the Street footage.

Weekend action. A mostly plan-free weekend coming up for the most part. Loose discussion of checking out the Jolly Roger sale tomorrow, neighborhood kid birthday party on Sunday, possibly hitting up Ramp Riders, hot-tubbing at the Y, hanging with the goobers.

Thursday, December 8, 2016

december eighth

Five for December 8th:

So it begins. We ran our faucets for the first time last night to stave off potential pipe-freezing. The joys of owning a 122-year-old house. How did I never know about this site? It’s a total NOS treasure trove. Holy crap.

Candy canes. There are literally two thousand of them sitting in boxes in our living room right now for the CHP candy cane hunt next Saturday. I’s a good thing Jane can’t read yet, because if she knew what was in those boxes, she would lose her mind.

Cool stuff. Stroganoff, Sumatra to-go, Santa Cruz Right to Exist video, cold morning roll, Stephen Colbert to fake news conspiracy theorists: "grow the fuck up".

Quote of the day. "People have expressed concern with Trump picking Hexxus, the pollution monster from Ferngully, to run the EPA, but let’s give him a chance." -Patrick Monahan

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

december seventh

Five for December 7th:

AM meeting. The bad: had to rush out earlier than usual this morning to drop George off and get to the office by 8. The good: carafe of Starbucks, two boxes of donuts and a bunch of free electric string samples.

Regrets. I passed on a $50 drum set at work yesterday. Definitely not something I remotely needed, but still. Oh well. At least Brian got a good deal.

Santa Paws. Jane has officially deemed this movie “too frightening” and will come back to it next year.

Cool stuff. Enjoi rails delivery, loose winter snowboarding plans for Hidden Valley, the history of Wilkerson Airlines, Kyle Walker SOTY, Star Wars jelly beans.

Loop trolley hours of operation announced. "Dude, I'm at Cicero's. You're where again? Pin-Up? Shit.. Alright man, I mean the trolley JUST left. Damn it. OK, hang tight, and I'll see you in like 25, 30 minutes."

Tuesday, December 6, 2016

december sixth

Five for December 6th:

Solo-daddin’. Got both kids solo tonight, which means frozen pizza and potential trips to candy cane lane and/or Ted Drewes (depending on levels of tiredness/kid insanity).

Night moves. Left work a little early yesterday and rolled around Webster for a few before heading home. Got to get it where I can while the weather is still mild.

Quote of the day. “The candidate who was going to defeat ISIS is currently at war with Saturday Night Live and a Broadway musical.” -William Ader

Cool stuff. Tony Hawk interview/Chin Ramp Sessions Volume 1, Todd and the Book of Pure Evil on Amazon Prime, pumpkin cranberry muffins, Why I Will Not Cast My Electoral Vote for Donald Trump, gyros with the lunch posse, Snakebite snapbacks.

Tuesday soundtrack. Circle Jerks, Fugazi, Husker Du, Dead Kennedys, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, Operation Ivy, Pailhead.

Monday, December 5, 2016

december fifth

Five for December 5th:

DAPL halted. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”

Guns n’ Roses. The rumors are true: GnR are returning to STL in July, for the first time since the Riverport riot. I kinda want to go.

Split pants. The dangers of skateboarding are real.

Cool stuff. Xmas party train crew 2016, High Lifes and the Jag-Wires at San Loo, JB sesh with Andy and Brian, smoked almonds, Starbucks holiday blend on autobreW, Black Flag Damaged 35th anniversary.

Idiocracy. In less than a month, Donald Trump has amassed a list of controversies that, had a Democrat had these same issues surrounding them, Republicans would be demanding multiple investigations, with some even possibly talking about grounds for impeachment. And the asshole isn’t even President yet.

Friday, December 2, 2016

december second

Five for December 2nd:

Office effigy. I took advantage of Brian leaving early yesterday to construct this creepy life-sized statue of him and leave it sitting at his desk.

Quote of the day. “I live in a country that will demand a burial for a fetus but will also casually bulldoze an indigenous gravesite for an oil pipeline.” -John Paul Brammer

Third thing. If I could think of one, it’d go here.

Cool stuff. 4 sets of $2.24 Enjoi Spectrum rails at Skate Warehouse, popcorn Friday, hummus veggie wrap, Florent Soulas- La Vie.

Weekend action. Taking the goobers to the Polar Express (or whatever it is this year) tonight, Doc’s 50th birthday/ punk rock karaoke at Blueberry Hill, hopefully a skate session (possibly at Ramp Riders?) and/or some bike trickery, maxing and relaxing.

Thursday, December 1, 2016

december first

Five for December 1st:

Laughter is the best medicine. The newest Star Wars Bad Lip Reading video might literally be the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Also, when Trump asked not to publish unflattering double chin pics, this is how the internet responded.

Danzig II. It’s one of those kinds of mornings.

Contacts. I have one fresh set left from my six-month supply that has now lasted me close to a year, and the pair I have in now is starting to reach the end of the line. Having contacts with my astigmatized eyes isn’t cheap, but having them has changed my life, so the expense is worth it.

Cool stuff. Freestylin’ repro sticker set, clam chowder, Nigel Sylvester interview/mini-doc, Love Notes, episode 6: Skate Rock, lunch with Tom.

Quote of the day. “It’s really easy to get sucked into a Don Pardo vortex.” -Seth
