february twenty-eighth

Five for February 28th:

It’s always something. Had the awesome honor of being rear-ended at lunch yesterday by a woman who didn’t have insurance. Luckily the damage was cosmetic, and pretty minimal. Hopefully it will get resolved amicably.

Team Haro. Looks like Haro will be re-rolling out their classic Team Haro clothing line in 2018, according to a post by their brand manager on the FB Haro page yesterday. Will the jacket be in the lineup? The shorts? Both? More? Take my money.

With a whimper. Donald Trump’s call for “millions to rally” fizzles spectacularly, as is the case with everything his sham presidency has thus far been involved in. Sad!

Cool stuff. Stacy Peralta: Creator of the Action Sports Video, watching Yo Gabba Gabba with George, frittatas, shorts weather, e-cymbal should be fixed by the weekend, allergy issues seem to be fading.

Tuesday soundtrack. Sleater-Kinney, The Cramps, Misfits, Enforcer, Shadows Fall, Iggy Pop, the Pixies, White Wizzard, The Clash.

Monday, February 27, 2017

february twenty-seventh

Five for February 27th:

Weekend highlights. Dinner and drinks with Lisa in the CWE, Hell Night crushing the Firebird, swimming/riding bikes/playing in the backward with Jane and George, short skate session at Webster.

Somebody call a wahmbulance! The man who once bragged that he had a plan to destroy ISIS in 30 days is too afraid to attend White House correspondent’s dinner because the press is mean to him.

E-drums. As is customary, one of the cymbals on my electronic drum kit stopped working over the weekend. Scheffer is re-soldering it today, and I scored a $20 backup on eBay to rotate in when the next one inevitably goes down.

Cool stuff. Classic Batman action figure for the office, runny eggs over sweet potatoes, coffee from Coffee Cartel, new lock for the shed, White Birch lunch skate plans, selling more stuff on eBay.

The kitchen. Our microwave is now fixed after more than a month of shorting out every time we turned it on, and the hinges on two broken cabinets (which were so odd they had to be special ordered online) have been replaced.

february twenty-fourth

Five for February 24th:

Annoying eBayers of the decade. The award goes to people who pull pages out of old issues of skate magazines and try to sell them for $6.99 apiece.

The daily grind. Fun afternoon jam at White Birch yesterday with Brian- who broke the nose off his board on a judo air- and busted out a few post-coffee freestyle moves this morning before heading in.

Quote of the day. "What's going down at Standing Rock illustrates what is now an undeniable truth in American life: What corporations want, corporations get. People do not matter; non-human species do not matter; the past does not matter; the future does not matter; treaties do not matter; you do not matter; I do not matter. What corporations want, corporations get. They are more important than you, than me, than 3.5 billion years of Earth life striving, flowering, creating abundance and beauty. We are witness to the end of this political system. It is completely unmasked. There is no kindly Democrat glossing over its terror, its rapaciousness. This nation was founded upon lies and plunder and greed. It is time to abandon the aims of this corporate nation state. America failed. No: it was designed to be one long and merciless failure." -Dan Hanrahan

Cool stuff. Ranchito with Tom, new issue of Thrasher, free Powell Supreme sticker, Mongoose En Costa Rica- Part 1, hearing George get better at talking by the day.

Weekend action. Cold weather (though still mild for February) is creeping back in, so outdoor activities may be somewhat limited. That said, Lisa’s rescheduled work holiday party at Dressel’s, Hell Night at Firebird, swimming/hot-tubbing at the Y, and a trip to Home Depot are all in the cards.

Thursday, February 23, 2017

february twenty-third

Five for February 23rd:

Clifton Park. Nice, balmy pre-spring evening at the playground yesterday with the kids and a bunch of neighbor friends. We played till well after dark.

George. The little dude finally had a full night of sleep where he didn’t cough himself awake. Relieved to see he’s starting to feel better.

Skate sesh. Another nice day means another trip out to White Birch for some ramp action in the afternoon.

Cool stuff. Helltrack ’86 t-shirt, space adventures with Jane, new Ted Leo album in the works, carafe of Kaldi’s at work, Grace Slick licensed a song to Chick-Fil-A, gave proceeds to LGBT group, Haro Dave Mirra Pro tribute bike.

Punk Is Dad. Remember that photo I posted that my friend Paul took earlier this week? It made the RFT.

february twenty-second

Five for February 22nd:

Spring break. We’ll be flying down to Florida in late April for a week of hanging out and swimming in Roger’s lanai, going to the beach, getting some sun, and generally decompressing. Cannot wait. Bonus: George still flies free.

Blyther FST. One step closer to getting it fully dialed in, with the new u-brake adapter showing up yesterday to attach a 990 front brake to a side-pull setup. Just need to track down four pegs and we’re in business. Can’t wait to start actually riding that thing.

Higher education. Got some great news yesterday about Jane’s potential school situation for next year- here’s hoping everything pans out.

Cool stuff. Jason Watts Haro 2017 video, microwave is fixed, lunch skating, homemade trail mix, new burgundy Ford Cobra jacket, After 51 Years, Vans Is Finally Explaining What "Off The Wall" Means.

Allergy attack. Much as I love the unseasonable weather we’ve had lately, the pollen is wreaking havoc on my sinuses. Popped some sort of off-brand Zyrtec thing today that will hopefully help get my head back on straight.

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

february twenty-first

Five for February 21st:

Right place, right time. Somehow, the planets aligned and my friend Paul snapped one of the best photographs ever taken yesterday. I cried with laughter. Fucking magical.

Bummers. Everyone in the family is sick/having allergy issues, broke a wine glass in the sink this morning, rainy day, got 3.5 hours of sleep last night, Donald Trump is still in office.

Upcoming shows. Hot on the heels of Redd Kross and the Descendents are Doyle at Firebird and Jonathan Richman at Off Broadway. An embarrassment of riches.

Cool stuff. Steve Caballero: A Tale of the Half Cab, two tubs of fresh-ground almond butter, hitting CoMo for True/False, free Starbucks at work.

Making lemonade. The skatepark was locked and the office closed at White Birch yesterday, so Brian and I just sessioned the bank and curb in the parking lot for a half hour. Equally fun!

Monday, February 20, 2017

february twentieth

Five for February 20th:

President’s day. Have a great one!

Getting radical. Awesome, sweaty-ass skate session at JB Sunday afternoon, got in a bunch of driveway flatland on the ’87 FST, and hitting White Birch today with Brian for some lunch shreds if the rain holds out.

Things I got for free yesterday. Bag of Cadbury mini-eggs, single old school Haro kneepad, bottle of Cosmic Ristretto espresso-brau.

Cool stuff. Skateone spring catalog, Snakebite BMX Mat Hoffman interview, cheap Powell Bombers, Turtle Park with the family, new hoop house for the backyard garden, cauliflower popcorn, Ultrahive.

Redd Kross at Firebird. I haven’t been this excited about a show in longer than I can even recall. Bummer: same night as The Damned.

Friday, February 17, 2017

february seventeenth

Five for February 17th:

Bike commute. Mid-February is perhaps the earliest in the year I’ve ever rode in, but when it’s 71 degrees out, I’m taking advantage.

169. I’m at my lowest weight in years, all thanks to less than two months of eating whole foods and cutting all crap out of my diet. I was probably hovering around the 180 mark at the end of 2016. My weight hasn’t dipped below the 170’s in as long as I can remember.

Have you seen him? Chris Russell, Cody Lockwood, Kevin Kowalski, Ben Raybourn, Alan Young, and Jimmy Wilkins pay tribute to 30 Years of Animal Chin, shot-for-shot with proper soundtrack and all.

Cool stuff. Descendents tickets purchased, payday, Boomerang U-brake adapter plate for the Blyther FST, new issue of Decibel, zucchini noodles, Shopkinville with Jane, daily Keith Olbermann footage.

Weekend action. The good: the weather will be nothing short of amazing all weekend. The bad: George is getting sick again. So, we’ll have to play this one by ear. Helping mom get settled at the rehab place, taking Jane to the park, hanging out in the backyard, hopefully skating or riding in there somewhere.

Thursday, February 16, 2017

february sixteenth

Five for February 16th:

Springtime in February. Sunshine and 70’s all the way through the weekend? Count me in.

Mom. Second knee replacement happened yesterday, and thankfully went about as well as knee surgery can go. A bit of recovery time and physical rehab and she’ll be good to go, Six Million Dollar Man-style.

Good question. Mr. President: just who the hell do you think you are?

Cool stuff. Accidental Courtesy full film, new auxiliary cable, revisiting the worst music video ever, Ford Cobra jacket, Clifton Park playground with the kids, work snack restock.

Drums. I’ve decided to sell my one of a kind Fibes marine pearl kit, which I’ve had for the better part of a decade. Much as I love them, after three years of it sitting in my basement unused and unloved it’s time for it to go to someone who can appreciate it. I’ll be picking up a new kit from work to use on occasional gigs or future projects- one that I don’t necessarily mind collecting a little dust.

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

february fifteenth

Five for February 15th:

Today. Splitting early to pick up Jane at school and hopefully take the kids to the park if the sun is out and it’s not too chilly. Hilarious that the coldest day this week is still up near 50 degrees.

Sleep deprivation. Between George waking up at 2:30 in the morning and Jane falling out of bed a couple hours later, I didn’t get much last night. Hopefully a steady stream of caffeine can keep me conscious.

Enough is enough. Four weeks in, and there is apparently no depth to which this turd of an administration cannot sink. Time to impeach/imprison this entire corrupt cabinet and start over. Heads need to start rolling.

Cool stuff. White Birch lunch sesh, nearing fish fry season, Jane’s valentine stash, ants on a log, new notebook.

Office quote of the day. "Are you talking about the drummer for Coverdale-Page? 'Cause I don't know who the fuck else you could be talking about."

Tuesday, February 14, 2017

february fourteenth

Five for February 14th:

Valentine’s day. Got to spend the morning with my three favorites, which is pretty much all I could really want. Jane of course had a whole outfit picked out for her party at school, and scored a huge set of colored pencils with animal erasers.

Descendents. The band that couldn’t sell out a telephone booth is playing the Pageant in Early October. Tix on sale this Friday. Pretty sure this is their first STL show since Mississippi Nights way back in 96 or 97, something like that. Snagging a couple for Lisa and myself.

Quote of the day. “THREE Trump advisers (Manafort, Page, Flynn) have left after ties to Russia were revealed. But there’s probably nothing more to this story.” -Donald Orwell

Cool stuff. White Birch lunch skate sesh with Brian, relearning tunes for the March 24 rock show, more springlike weather (planning on a Friday ride-in), another good night of sleep for George, Some Kind of Monster on Netflix, Trump should be arrested, k-cup restock.

Tuesday soundtrack. Pelican, DRI, White Wizzard, Explosions in the Sky, Red Fang, Riddle of Steel, Mogwai.

Monday, February 13, 2017

february thirteenth

Five for February 13th:

Outdoorsmanship. 74 degrees on Saturday and a 55-degree Sunday meant being outside as much as possible. Plenty of backyard hangs, a couple of trips to Clifton Park and the little library, and hiking the Powder Valley trails.

Team One Way lives on. Some things will just never stop being awesome, and riding BMX bikes with Greg and co. at Shenandoah is one of them.

Sleep training. I’m taking over George’s bedtime duty for the twin-bed transition, and the first couple of nights have been as successful as you could hope for. Knock on wood.

Cool stuff. Gregg Bissonette clinic jam at Focal Point, one-dollar sunglasses, morning boardslides, classic Perry Mervar Bully flatland footage, iPhone photo dump, the advent of SCROTUS, cabinet hinges.

Gumball machine toys. Jane was so ecstatic about being surprised with a $0.50 toy octopus that she slept with it on her nightstand. Being a dad rules.

Friday, February 10, 2017

february tenth

Five for February 10th:

Rock n’ roll Part 2. Looks like I’ll be sitting in on drums once again with the Jag-Wires at the Tap Room on Friday, March 24th. It’s free, so come bang yer head.

Skateboarding. A few hits at the Loop curb spot on the way in, and a potential lunch session in the works for this afternoon. Get it in where you can.

Quote of the day. "According to a report by Politico, corned-beef dirigible Donald Trump, a skill-free inheritance baby with a virtually unbroken lifelong track record of incompetence and failure, has found that running the United States government is a tougher job than lending his name to mail-order steak delivery scams." -Albert Burneko

Cool stuff. Santa Cruz fall lineup (that white Thiebaud will be mine), house democrat moves on impeachment, almond butter, Skate Europe: Denmark, string samples, selling more stuff on eBay.

Weekend action. Weather near the 70-mark and lots of good stuff happening. Taking the kids to the playground and/or a possible trip to Creve Coeur beach, morning skate session, rock show at San Loo, Gregg Bissonnette clinic at Focal Point, hanging out at mom’s.

Thursday, February 9, 2017

february ninth

Five for February 9th:

Another big swing. The drive in to work today was 18 degrees, tomorrow will be up in the mid 60’s, near 70 on Saturday. Yeah I’m totally down for basically not having a winter.

Eric Dressen Epicly Later’d. Watched the whole five-part series on Youtube again this morning. So good. Second only to the John Cardiel episode.

Trump vs. Nordstrom. I’m seeing lots of people that likely spend their days in comments sections calling people “special snowflakes” whining like entitled children about a department store deciding not to carry a Chinese-made women’s clothing line. Just sayin’.

Cool stuff. Mitch McConnell’s censure of Elizabeth Warren just gave her a much bigger platform, raw nut restock, Harvard bookstore creates Bowling Green Massacre section, Castlevania Netflix series.

It’s always something. Dead battery in the van this morning, likely a combination of the dome lights being left on a couple of times and the huge temperature drop. AAA to the rescue.

Wednesday, February 8, 2017

february eighth

Five for February 8th:

My girl. Last night Jane made her first cardboard box spaceship and also crafted a “bug catcher” on the deck out of a second box, some cheerios, and a paper bag. I love watching her creativity and imagination develop.

70/30. As in degrees outdoors, yesterday vs. today. Yesterday I was wearing shorts, today there are snow flurries. Ahwell.

Good job, Republicans. I hope gambling the education of America's youth on some worthless know-nothing for the sake of another spite-vote against the Democrats and to appease your corrupt leader was worth it. Relatedly, I look forward to someday very literally shitting on Mitch McConnell’s grave.

Cool stuff. Morning choo-choo action with George, pre-work curb session, prototype J-bass, Through the Lens - Creative Minds: The Creator of Radical Rick, hitting the sauna.

Wednesday soundtrack. Jawbreaker, Husker Du, Black Sabbath, Teen Idles, Descendents, Buzzcocks, Dictators, The Replacements.

Tuesday, February 7, 2017

february seventh

Five for February 7th:

Whole eating. Down at least a pant size (maybe more), at my lowest weight in years, and feel like a different person altogether with regards to energy and overall lack of sluggishness. I try not to speak in absolutes, but I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever return to my old ways. I barely even crave shitty food anymore.

New wallet. The wallet I’ve had for probably 15 years is literally falling apart at the seams and at this point is mostly duct tape and staples. Pulled the trigger on a new leather Indy wallet from SCS, and threw in a $3 Ripper coozie for good measure. Sometimes you just have to treat yourself.

Easy money. Rescued a box of 25 or so brand new (old stock) Ampeg banners from the dumpster at work a few weeks ago and have been selling them on eBay for around $10 a pop.

Cool stuff. Near 70 degrees today, Trump is lonely and crazy in his bunker, The Picturebooks – Our Own Little Hideaway, resistance works, lunchtime beach cruise, cherry pie Larabar.

Quote of the day. "Daddy, we don't have time for fart jokes." -Jane

Monday, February 6, 2017

february sixth

Five for February 6th:

Super Bowl. That was the best and most intense super bowl I’ve seen since the ’99 Best Show on Turf Rams narrowly beat the Titans. Say what you will about the Patriots (no love here), but last night’s performance set the bar.

RV show 2017. Tons of new Shasta-style faux-vintage campers on the floor this year- way more than ever before. Jane had a blast laying in all the bunk beds and playing with the decorative plastic fruit. The tradition lives on.

JB. Sunny Sunday roll-around at Jefferson Barracks with Andy was just what the doctor ordered. CCL beach cruise this afternoon if the sun comes out.

Cool stuff. Springlike weather, Simple Session footage, Donald Trump has the lowest approval ratings of any president in US history, Lego Number of the Beast, new scale,

Quote of the day. “This is where we are as a country: any commercial that celebrates American values is interpreted as an insult to the President.” -Michael Ian Black

Friday, February 3, 2017

february third

Five for February 3rd:

Quote of the day. “You heard him correctly. Your ears do not deceive you. The president used the national prayer breakfast to insult Arnold Schwarzenegger.” -Stephen Colbert

Zestfully clean. To be clear, I’m not proud of how long I just went without taking a shower. Sometimes this stuff just sneaks up on you.

Last night. Best night yet for George in the new twin bed, likely helped by the fact that he’s finally getting over the sickness he’s had this past week.

Cool stuff. Sweet potato muffins, the Tony Hawk lineup, Mr. Kamikaze’s Spud Patrol Tour video, Ranchito with Tom and Brian, Fans Create Metroid Prequel Game – ‘Metroid: Rogue Dawn’, paying off my credit card.

Weekend action. Should be a mild one in the weather department- hopefully nice enough to take the kids to the playground. Additional plans include riding the BMX and/or morning skate session, hitting the RV show with Jane, swimming at the Y, and cleaning up the back yard.

Thursday, February 2, 2017

february second

Five for February 2nd:

FYE. After months of speculation, the FYE on Hampton (which has been a record store since at least the early 80s) is officially closing to make way for a godforsaken Chik-Fil-A. That place was actually awesome, with a great new and used vinyl section and tons of cool toys and shirts. Another bite out of the fabric of South St. Louis. What a joke.

Free lunch. Sandwiches at work today to celebrate crushing the January sales forecast. Too bad I’m not really eating bread at the moment. Nice gesture nonetheless.

From philanderer to panderer. Hey look, the guy who famously cheated on all three of his wives with innumerable mistresses, has been caught on tape bragging about sexual assault, and very likely paid underage Russian prostitutes to urinate on each other in a hotel room is going to finally get some good ol' Christian morals passed into legislation.

Cool stuff. VSW World Cup of BMX 1988, three for the price of one Iron Maiden and Judas Priest tees, Shopkins for Jane, newly found ditch skatespot by work, egg roll bowls.

Quote of the day. “Anyone point out that a Donald Trump anagram is Lord Dampnut?” –Colin Mochrie

Wednesday, February 1, 2017

february first

Five for February 1st:

Speeding towards spring. January is behind us, days are staying lighter later, fish fry season is just around the corner, and seedlings for the garden are pre-planted in the windowsill. Obviously not out of the woods yet, but it’s a good start.

White Birch. Rad session yesterday afternoon with Brian. We had the whole place to ourselves, the weather was good, and some satisfying ripping went down.

R.I.P. Ride. The last surviving BMX print magazine announced it is ceasing publication as of the last issue and going to web-only. No more Dig, no more BMX Plus, now this. What a bummer. Hopefully something comes along to fill the void.

Cool stuff. Speed metal playlists for coworkers, morning curbslides, My Top 10 Ride BMX Issues, $8 Skeleton Key Rumble in Ramona t-shirt, reimbursement checks.

Quote of the day. “We learned too late, a tyrant doesn’t seek stability, only power.” -Ulaz, Voltron
