april twenty-first

Five for April 21st:

Five years. Happy fifth anniversary to my amazing wife Lisa. It’s unbelievable that a half-decade has already elapsed, incredible to see what it has brought us, and exciting to look forward to whatever comes next.

Vacation 2017 #1. Blog-free next week for a few days of sun, sand, ocean waves, and general chilling out with the crew. Seeya in May.

Reminder. In case anyone has forgotten over these last few days of being inundated with pictures of Trump, Kid Rock and Ted Nugent vapidly smirking in the oval office-this is how actual presidents with a shred of respect or dignity behave.

Cool stuff. Van AC repair, lunch with Tom and Brian, A Letter Welcoming St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson, iced green tea, Red Bull Tip to Tail series revisited.

Weekend action. Anniversary dinner date, Redd Kross at the Firebird, packing for the beach, swimming at the Y, Sunday morning skate sesh, possibly checking out Seth’s band at Euclid for Record Store Day, mowing the lawn.

april twentieth

Five for April 20th:

Good riddance. Bill O’Reilly is officially out on his ass and Sam Dotson is gone on day one of the Krewson mayorship. Everyone wins.

School days. Jane is officially enrolled in an exceptionally good, well-performing, diverse public school, and we didn’t even have to move to the county. Relieved to finally have that behind us and soldier on as city folk.

PTO. Found out yesterday that effective May 1, I’ll be getting an extra week of vacation time per year, which is totally awesome and unexpected.

Cool stuff. Morning at the park, beach cruise at Creve Coeur lake, backyard BMX jumping, sparkling water restock, Haro Ramp Riders shirt and S&M coffee mug,

Slappy hour. Had a super fun afternoon board meeting with Brian at the Schnucks curbs before the rain moves in. Saw a homeless guy peeing in the bushes and laid down some backside grinds.

april nineteenth

Five for April 19th:

Jawbreaker at Riotfest. Passed on the OG Misfits reunion last year, but this one may be worth a couple hundred bucks and a trip to Chicago for.

Free lunch. What if any of it I will actually eat remains to be seen, but it’s a nice gesture nonetheless.

This morning. Quick stop to check out the Forest Park waterfall with George, get in a few backside slappies, and pick up a fresh carton of cantaloupe and bag of raw almonds.

Cool stuff. Fourteen miles of riding yesterday, Grosso’s Love Letters Season 8 coming soon, Bill O’Reilly is reportedly getting shitcanned, White Birch afternoon sesh with Brian and Andy, new front brake cable for the Dyno.

MST3K. I was skeptical that the new ones would be good, but I’m happy to say that skepticism was unfounded. The new ‘bot voices take some getting used to, but a couple of episodes in, it’s pretty much as good as ever.

april eighteenth

Five for April 18th:

Two-wheeled morning. Rode my BMX home from Dobb’s at 7 am after dropping the van off to get the tire replaced and immediately hopped on my road bike for a six-mile ride in to the office for an 8 am meeting. Bam.

Guitar porn. Found a few Ampeg Dan Armstrong prototypes and production samples in the warehouse the other day. It’s amazing what’s still lurking around this building. Working on getting one or two of them sold.

George’s new ride. My little guy finally has his own trike for the backyard and is already cruising around like a pro.

Cool stuff. Ham & eggs, hitting the playground tonight, 74 degrees today, Lisa’s birthday float trip planned, bowl of Cuties and Starbucks K-Cups at work, finding skate spots using Google Earth.

Tuesday soundtrack. Led Zeppelin.

april seventeenth

Five for April 17th:

Easter 2017. Full weekend of action for the goobers: 117th annual Clifton Heights egg hunt, meeting the bunny, dyeing eggs at home, backyard hunt at the house, backyard hunt at grandma’s house, and two easter baskets full of goodies.

Always something. The van got a flat tire at some point over the weekend, which was noticed yesterday afternoon right as we were leaving to go out North County. Luckily we made it home afterwards with just enough daylight for me to get the spare on.

BMX. Had a killer time riding the Figure 8 trails for a bit on Saturday morning, and squeezed in some driveway flatland yesterday while the kids snoozed.

Cool stuff. Summerlike weather, Psycho Stick revisited, biking in tomorrow, Dad Photoshops Daughter In Dangerous Situations to Scare Grandma, Jane’s first frog encounter, new pack of razor blades, under-the-bed t-shirt bin, modern concave.

Let’s go Blues. Currently up 3-0 against Minnesota in the current best of seven series. Stanley Cup, here we come.

april fourteenth

Five for April 14th:

That’s my boy. The first thing George said to me this morning as I was changing his diaper was “skateboard, downstairs!”, meaning he wanted to go downstairs with me and watch skate videos on the couch. Naturally, I obliged.

Quote of the day. “I think it’s illuminating to see how many people are looking for airline-related expertise to discuss this issue. As if there’s some magic, aviation-related secret rule that makes brutality against paying customers OK.” -Jim Mathews

Murphy’s Law at Fubar. Here’s one I might have to check out. Haven’t seen them since they played Casa Loma Ballroom sometime back in the mid-90’s. Should be a fun one if I can get my ass of the couch.

Cool stuff. Box of Rocks II, getting paid, selling stuff on eBay, lunch with Brian and Katie, catching up on BS with TG episodes.

Weekend action. Busy one on the horizon: Clifton Park spring cleanup and egg hunt, hopefully getting the Nyquist Backtrail out to ride the Figure 8 BMX trails, Easter at Lisa’s mom’s, Middle Class Fashion at El Lenador, mowing the lawn, whatever else comes along.

april thirteenth

Five for April 13th:

Two-wheelin’. Had a blast riding bikes with Jane in the parking lot down the street from our house. She’s getting more and more comfortable on her bike, and was having such a good time cruising around that she didn’t want to leave. I felt the same way.

Clean living. Kale and radishes from the backyard garden, fresh eggs, sweet potatoes and lettuce from the farm share.

Skate rock. Short and sweet mini-ramp rager with Brian at WB yesterday afternoon, curb stop for some boardslides on the way in this morning.

Cool stuff. Chad DeGroot Cuba 2017 video, Mike Judge, the Bard of Suck, $0.55 Sumatra refill at Starbucks, free coffee mug at work, Steve Caballero Ban This personal rider on eBay.

Tonight. Solo dad evening while Lisa is out, so I'll be taking the kids to the playground for some romping around and wearing-down before bedtime, weather permitting.

april twelfth

Five for April 12th:

R.I.P. Charlie Murphy. Bummer news today. I know I'm not making some kind of revelatory statement here, but Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories will forever be some of the funniest standalone bits of comedy ever committed to tape by anyone for as long as mankind exists.

This is reality. Happy Passover from the Trump administration.

Rolling action. Hitting up White Birch for a lunch skate session and planning on riding some flatland tonight on the Master after the kids go to bed. 74 degrees and clear skies- Gotta take advantage.

Cool stuff. Stack of 2008 SLAP magazines, old Baco videos on YouTube, new pair of Nike Toki Lows, Florent Soulas footage, Thrasher sticker sheets, blowing bubbles for George, Squeeze on Spotify, hard-boiled eggs.

Vision completes at Home Depot. Might as well grab a new shred sled while you’re picking up plywood to build your backyard mini.

april eleventh

Five for April 11th:

At least I put on deodorant. The only difference between what I'm wearing today and when I wore yesterday is that there's a 50% chance my socks are on the opposite feet.

Last night. If you’d told me when I was 17 that someday I’d be skipping seeing Doyle from the Misfits play at a small club on a Monday night in favor of watching a couple of episodes of The Real Ghostbusters and eating ants on a log, I probably would have called you crazy. Yet here we are.

Morning Roll. Had a few extra minutes this morning, so I stopped by WG to roll around for a bit before heading in. I wasn’t counting on pretty much everything except this parking block being wet, but hey.

Cool stuff. Cerise Limon La Croix, work snack restock, free pile of old Thrasher mags from Doug, sibling’s day with J&G, Snakebite BMX snapback.

Tuesday soundtrack. Venom, Nuclear Assault, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Bad Religion, Negative Approach, Dag Nasty, Teenage Bottlerocket, Elder, Orchid, The Sword.

Monday, April 10, 2017

april tenth

Five for April 10th:

Rites of passage. Jane attended her first Cardinals game yesterday with the grandparents, complete with requisite junk food binge. She made it all the way to the 7th inning, too, which is about three innings more than I was expecting.

BMX build. Had a blast hanging out with Greg yesterday and building up my new Master; undoubtedly the best bike I have ever sat my ass down on. Seriously unbelievable. I can’t wait to ride this thing all summer and dial in some new tricks.

Spring. Sunny and 70 degrees all weekend, the neighborhood is blooming like crazy, the backyard veggie garden is already producing, and evenings at the playground are in full swing. There’s nothing better.

Cool stuff. Aggroman/Head First/Ride On DVD collection on loan, S&M air freshener and giant shield sticker, impromptu neighborhood pizza party, free pair of Haro sunglasses, morning roll, watching Sick Boys with George.

Tonight. Doyle at the Firebird. Part of me wants to go just because I was such a huge Misfits fan, part of me doesn’t know if dropping $20 and going out on a Monday night is actually going to happen. Time will tell.

Friday, April 7, 2017

april seventh

Five for April 7th:

Reality bites. Just in case you'd forgotten that every one of us now actually lives in a world where Donald Trump is allowed to launch missiles.

Parks and rec. Beautiful spring evening goofing around at the playground and strolling Clifton Park with Jane (and bear).

Quote of the day. "When I was a kid, I didn’t even know Vinnie Vincent *existed*, let alone that when I got into in my thirties he would come up in conversation at my place of business literally every single week of my life." -Seth

Cool stuff. Creature Skateboards Born Dead video, morning curb sesh on the way in (need to throw some rails on that ripper), Ranchito with Tom and Brian, rigsofdad Instagram, busting out the Freestyler Vans, Siete breakfast tacos, Steve Crandall interview.

Weekend action. Great one coming up in the weather department. Spring clean-up at the park, hanging out with the kids all day tomorrow while Lisa has her big work gala, lunch at mom’s, possible trip to Creve Coeur beach, mowing the back yard, building up the new Haro Master with Greg, riding some bikes, general chillaxery.

Thursday, April 6, 2017

april sixth

Five for April 6th:

Tired of all this winning yet? Bannon demoted, Nunes "stepping aside", Flynn out on his ass, Gorsuch facing a Democratic blockade, a President facing a treason investigation, and something like 2000 cabinet positions still unfilled. But hey, Ivanka has an office in the White House now, so there’s that.

My back is still hurting. Three years ago today- following a solid week of sledgehammer demolition, hauling and disposing of hundreds of pounds of concrete by myself in various city dumpsters, about thirty trips to Home Depot, and several tubes of construction adhesive, I finished repairing our crumbling front steps.

Tough questions. If a flute player is a flautist, is a lute player a lautist?

Cool stuff. Egg white bites, every story I have read about Trump supporters in the past week, Riot on Spotify, forgotten Hell Night shirt located in the back of the minivan, turkey lettuce wraps.

MLS stadium vote fails. And here I was sure THIS was finally going to be the stadium that was going to solve all of St. Louis' problems.

Wednesday, April 5, 2017

april fifth

Five for April 5th:

Late sleeper. George was up for an hour or so in the middle of the night, likely due to storm noise, and was still out like a light when I left this morning. Glad he’s catching up on z’s, but bummed to miss our morning routine.

Delivery day. So stoked to get my new Master delivered, even though it will just be a giant box of bike parts I’ll be staring at longingly for the next few days.

Water in the basement season. Time to break out the box fans and dehumidifier.

Cool stuff. It’s Always Sunny blooper reels on YouTube, flawless drum sale yesterday, Dave Mirra Chasing the View off the Cliff segment, Cara Spencer on STL soccer stadium funding, Harry Shearer: Why My Spinal Tap Lawsuit Affects All Creators.

The dangers of distraction. “A flurry of unfounded allegations clutter our news feeds. Susan Rice. Wiretapping of the Trump team by President Obama. The latest Fox News induced Twitter rant. The smoke machine is turned on. There's a trained monkey dancing in the corner. The magician is buckling his cufflinks. The misdirection meter is turned up full. We cannot let ourselves be distracted. It is baseball season so perhaps the age-old admonition of youth coaches across the country is warranted. "Keep your eyes on then ball."We know that Russia - led by a former KGB agent - actively worked to undermine our election. We know that there are serious investigations into collision between Trump associates and Russian operatives. That is the story. Everything else is just noise and dust until proven otherwise.” -Dan Rather

Tuesday, April 4, 2017

april fourth

Five for April 4th:

Haro Master. The planets aligned yesterday and I got what is probably the last complete 2016 DMC Master available anywhere outside of eBay. So stoked. Literally my dream bike since I was a kid- now my (early) 40th birthday present to myself. Better late than never! Building it up with Greg on Sunday. Best part? It was essentially free.

So long, Fibes. I finally listed my drums for sale yesterday and had a buyer within the hour. Basically getting what I paid for them, which is good enough for me. Glad to see them going somewhere where they’ll get some use. I work for a drum company, so getting another kit for future projects at a good price is no problem, should I ever need to.

Voting day. Didn’t make it out to the polling place yet, but hitting it after work. Even if you don’t have a horse in the mayoral race, if you live in St. Louis city, the propositions on the ballot are too important to sit out. Go make your voice heard.

Cool stuff. New issue of Thrasher, playing Star Wars with Jane, Birth of Big Air DVD special features, Emergen-C on hand, good leftovers.

Tuesday soundtrack. Kyuss, Spirit Caravan, Electric Wizard, ASG, Monolord, Windhand, Verbal Abuse, D.I., The Marked Men, JFA, Lard.

Monday, April 3, 2017

april third

Five for April 3rd:

Great outdoors. April showers held out until today, making for a perfect weekend outside. Got the lawn mowed, the weeds whacked, and spent tons of time in the backyard and around the neighborhood bumming around with the kids. Can’t beat it.

Old man flatland jam. Paul stopped by Saturday night for an old school driveway freestyle BMX session. Good times were had and some sweet moves were (obviously) laid down.

Feng shui. Sometimes a little office rearranging, re-framing, and decluttering is just what the doctor ordered.

Cool stuff. Cards beat the Cubs in the home opener, feeding the ducks at Clifton Park, Choppers, skateboards and biker-blues: Meet the Picturebooks, Our Dishonest President parts 1 and 2, short and sweet morning skate jam at JB, salmon cakes.

Quote of the day. “Trying to reach those who want to tell me what a good idea it is to build the 4th stadium of my lifetime in order to fix the city. Since it’s worked so well in the past.” -Steve P.
