may thirty-first

Five for May 31st:

I should have biked in yesterday. “50% chance of storms at 5 pm” my ass. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky at 5 pm. I should start issuing fines to inept weather forecasters for wasting my time.

Serious question. Do you think anyone has ever shown up to a Pride Fest only to be disappointed to find it wasn’t a three-day celebration of the musical legacy of Charley Pride?

Quote of the day. "The United States is no longer a leader. We have ceded the moral high ground to countries like those in Europe and even China who have no trouble understanding science and reason." -Dan Rather

Cool stuff. Making clover necklaces for Jane, peanut butter cookie Larabars, three bags of Seattle’s Best #5, evening flatland in the backyard, Team Hip Tricks 1989 - Summer Edit.

Lunch in the trenches. Celebrated Brian’s 42nd birthday with a sweltering rager at 170 ditch yesterday afternoon. That place is so fun.

may thirtieth

Five for May 30th:

Fun long weekend. Highlights include George’s second birthday party at the playground with all the neighborhood kids, two skate sessions at JB, Sylvan Springs park with the crew, two barbecues, our first trip of the summer to the Maplewood pool, and lots of other good stuff.

Quote of the day. “A survivor of the stabbing in Portland has to rely on GoFundMe to pay for medical expenses because America is the best country in the world.” -Cole Escola

170 ditch. Finally got a chance to check out this spot on Friday and it ruled. Seriously a blast, and literally five minutes from the office. Can’t wait to go back today.

Cool stuff. Raditudes series on YouTube, new issue of Thrasher, meeting Julian, Powell dragon snapbacks, morning roll, iPhone photo purge.

Tuesday soundtrack. Iron Maiden, Naked Raygun, Toxic Holocaust, Kreator, Adolescents, Diablo Blvd, Bolt Thrower, D.R.I., Mastodon, Cro-Mags, Deep Purple.

may twenty-sixth

Five for May 26th:

Happy birthday George. My little dude turns two tomorrow, but we party tonight. Hard to believe two years have already gone by, but he acts more like a two year old every day, so I guess it’s not that hard.

Toddler-in-chief. Trump’s behavior at NATO is a national embarrassment, which of course by now should come as a surprise to nobody.

Variflex Voodoo. The first skateboard I ever owned. My mom bought it for me on QVC when I was probably 10. Learned to roll on it, learned to ollie on it. When we built our first ramp I learned kickturns on it. Long story short, I scored one on eBay this morning for an absurdly cheap price and I'm f*cking stoked. Just missing the blue rails. I'm thinking George needs to learn to shred on this to keep the tradition alive.

Cool stuff. S&M Bikes coffee mug, getting paid, Descendents after-show passes procured, Thai red curry soup, good ride yesterday, jasmine tea, jamming Walk Among Us on the drive in, afternoon 170 ditch session.

Memorial Day weekend action. Birthday celebration tonight at the playground, maybe hanging out with Greg at Ramp Riders, another birthday get-together with Brian and crew, BBQ at Lisa’s mom’s, hitting Maplewood pool, hopefully getting in some skating at JB if the weather cooperates.

Thursday, May 25, 2017

may twenty-fifth

Five for May 25th:

Bike commuting. First and only day this week, but one is better than none. Quick, cool ride in this morning- barely even broke a sweat.

Five years ago today. We found out we were having a girl, and announced Lisa’s pregnancy to the world. Last night, said girl made a construction paper tutu on the kitchen floor, kissed a pug through a fence, and helped me mow the lawn.

Get action. Sunny slappy skate session at the Schnucks curb with Brian, freestyle BMX jams in the back driveway after the kids were in bed.

Cool stuff. New issue of Decibel, veggie scramble, evening at the playground, 11 Twisted Facts About The Far Side, Dennis McCoy Chasing the View off the Cliff segment, GLTS: All Hail Cardiel Part 2, fresh jar of almond butter, home coffee restock, hitting Ranchito.

Drums. May soon be coming into possession of a free drum set from a pile of samples at work, which will be cool to have for the occasional fill-in gig or for any sort of possible future musical projects. Though no such things are currently on the horizon, the price is right.

may twenty-fourth

Five for May 24th:

Fire Stick. Our trusty old Nintendo Wii is finally retired from service, at least so far as streaming video is concerned. The new Fire Stick is installed as of last night and is way cooler and faster than I ever imagined.

Skateboard-themed coffee mugs I own. Santa Cruz classic dot, Bones Wheels vato rat, Skull Skates skull logo.

170 ditch. Using first-person accounts, 26 year old video footage, and current satellite surveillance, I found the location and entry point for the marginally-infamous 170 ditch yesterday. It’s only about 5 minutes from my office and hopefully still somewhat rideable. We shall see.

Cool stuff. $1 Ninja Turtle Leonardo figure, morning railslides, somehow pieced together a good lunch, playing Aladdin with Jane, Greg’s new Lineage Haro Sport, 2017 Nyquist Jackhammer bars.

Mushuganas in Chicago. Reunion show on June 17th. Now this one might call for a road trip. One of my favorite bands and some of the best dudes ever.

Tuesday, May 23, 2017

may twenty-third

Five for May 23rd:

Janey. Last day of preschool for my little girl today, who continues to grow at light speed. May your socks be forever mismatched.

Iron Maiden Strangers in a Strange Land. Stumbled upon this amazing, fan-made Somewhere in Time-era live compilation yesterday. One of their best albums and most visually amazing tours that was for some unexplainable reason criminally under-documented. Go check it out immediately.

Shredding. Hit White Birch yesterday afternoon for a skate session with Brian and got in some morning flatland in Forest Park before the rain starts up.

Cool stuff. Selling stuff on eBay, Grosso’s Loveletters Season 8: All Hail Cardiel Part 1, Mortal Kombat with Kevin, new Whole 30, doing pushups, fruit cup, blueberry RX bar from Lisa, ditch spot right by my office.

Tuesday soundtrack. Entombed, Nailbomb, Death Breath, Testament, Minor Threat, Zeke, Exodus, Lecherous Gaze, ALL.

Monday, May 22, 2017

may twenty-second

Five for May 22nd:

Happy birthday Lisa. Kicked off the big 3-7 celebration in style over the weekend with a bike ride on the Katy Trail from Weldon Spring to Matson and back, BBQ at a little trail stop in Defiance, record shopping at Planet Score, sangria at Taste of Maplewood, brunch at Russell’s, and cupcakes and paddle boating at the farm. The party continues tonight.

New brew. Had to say goodbye to the old Mr. Coffee yesterday. It served us well. Picked up a nice new Black & Decker 12-cup job, which had its inaugural run this morning, and I’m happy to say passed with flying colors.

Radical moves. Got in a couple of fun backyard freestyle jams in over the weekend. Not the best scenario for flatland riding (as it isn’t flat), but it’s convenient at least.

Cool stuff. Probably the best skateboard trick I’ve ever seen, mud puddlin’ with the kids, morning roll, bowl of cuties and rack of Pike Place K-cups at work, cinnamon gum, How to Manage Your Idiot President.

Riding gear. Picked up a new LED headlight and taillight, under-saddle bag, and chain lock for the road bike- all of which were either broken, taped together, or missing parts.

Friday, May 19, 2017

may nineteenth

Five for May 19th:

Full day. Yesterday was jam-packed: rode the bike to work, had an afternoon skate session with Brian, rode home, and then met Andy at Webster for more shredding after the kids went to bed. Somewhere in there I managed to hang out with the family, work eight hours, take a shower, and watch a documentary about beaver lodges.

Sleeping through loud thunderstorms. The streak remains unbroken.

Drive tunes. Got to check out the as-yet unreleased three-song Cruel Summer ’89 EP on the way in this morning. Of course, it was recorded in like one day and totally f*cking rules.

Cool stuff. Chrome Ball Incident Danny Way interview, good lfeftovers, Articles of Impeachment, the past 24 hours of devastating Trump news, explained, veggie scramble, Jane’s parade store, this dude.

Weekend action. Pre-birthday dinner and drinks with Lisa, possibly painting the living room, afternoon at the farm for some paddleboating, taking the Master out for a flatland ride at the parking lot, whatever else comes along.

Thursday, May 18, 2017

may eighteenth

Five for May 18th:

Three out of five. One more ride in to work today before rain moves in. I’m loving riding my bike more than ever these days, and I’m excited to keep it going through the summer and fall as much as possible. 30 miles of pedaling so far this week with 6 more to go.

Backpack. In the market for a new one, as the two I have in rotation (one of which I got for free at a NAMM show in probably 2003) are both in various stages of threadbare decay following years of continuous use. Leaning toward the Element Jaywalker- plenty of space, actual buckle skate straps, rigorous and cheap.

Spring Parade. Jane’s last big school event of the year (and before she starts at her new school) is this afternoon. Bummed I’m going to miss it, but luckily Lisa will be there to document the occasion.

Cool stuff. New Skull Skates coffee mug, driveway PVC slider session, afternoon slappies with Brian, office décor rearranging, Replacements bookmark, garlic stuffed queen olives.

Quote of the day. "Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the President." -Theodore Roosevelt

Wednesday, May 17, 2017

may seventeenth

Five for May 17th:

Last night. Fast ride home despite the brutal headwinds, followed by Jane’s end-of-the-schoolyear picnic at the park. The kids had some Ted Drewes and ran themselves ragged. Good times.

Blame it on McCain. Everything that is happening with regard to the current presidency and state of modern Republican politics can be traced back to the moment John McCain introduced Sarah Palin- and with her new, never-before-seen levels of acceptable ignorance and cartoonish stupidity- onto the people of the United States. She normalized the idea of the proud idiot in office. She is ground zero. Mitochondrial Eve. The blueprint for everything that came after. I guess my point is, John, you made this bed- and now you get to sleep in it.

Vintage Vinyl poster haul. Detroit Cobras, the Cars, Screeching Weasel, Black Lips, Tad, John Coltrane.

Cool stuff. Work coffee restock, free Jeff Beck stickers, At a Besieged White House, Tempers Flare and Confusion Swirls, new episodes of Sherlock, SCS H-Street blowouts.

Quote of the day. “I think we’re in impeachment territory now.” -David Gergen

Tuesday, May 16, 2017

may sixteenth

Five for May 16th:

This morning. Had some good coffee, watched a bunch of skate and BMX videos with George on my lap, planted a fairy catcher with Jane, and got in a sunny six-mile ride to work on my road bike. Not too shabby for a Tuesday.

Quote of the day. “We’ve got this perverse situation in which the vast analytic powers of the entire world are being spent trying to understand a guy whose thoughts are often just six fireflies beeping randomly in a jar.” -David Brooks

My wife rules. When you have someone willing to make a trip to a specialty market just to get two containers of fresh-ground almond butter for you, you have a keeper.

Cool stuff. Afternoon cold brew (coffee) run, grilling on the deck, saw a raccoon on my ride home yesterday, iPhone photo dump, Santa Cruz summer reissues, new Product Pillage video.

Tuesday soundtrack. Dead Lord, At The Gates, Twisted Sister, Fuzz, Q5, Ramones, Rose Tattoo, Pig Destroyer, Bad Relition, Evile, Gorilla Biscuits, Baroness.

Monday, May 15, 2017

may fifteenth

Five for May 15th:

Parenthood. Huge heartfelt congrats to Andy and Kelli on the birth of their son. Can’t wait to meet the little dude.

Bike commuting. It’s very simple: if you don’t ride your bike on a day like today, you don’t like riding bikes. Perfect weather for a fast and loose six-mile ride in this morning.

Weekend highlights. Mother’s day brunch and dinner with the best moms ever, dirt jumps at Figure 8, open house at Jane’s new school, playground with the kids, takeout from Adam’s, backyard freestyle.

Cool stuff. Kid (the movie) on YouTube, Seattle’s Best #5 restock, Robert Reich: The End of Trump, new D.R.I. shirt, Mexican cauliflower rice, Star Wars Prune Face figure, bourbon slushies, Ranchito with the lunch crew.

Summer shorts, part two. Picked up a new pair over the weekend with a 30” waist as my 32’s were falling off despite multiple washings. If I’d tried to squeeze into a 30” pair of shorts a year ago at this time it would have been laughable. It’s unbelievable- and again, owed almost completely to simple healthy eating.

Friday, May 12, 2017

may twelfth

Five for May 12th:

Proud dad moment. When you get home from work to find your daughter laying in front of the stereo following along to a Return of the Jedi book on tape.

Backyard BMX. Almost stuck a couple of proper boomerangs last night after the kids went to bed. Slow and steady progression.

Cognitive dissonance is a hell of a drug. I wonder how all these Trump supporters constantly calling people "snowflakes'" and talking about how liberals need their "safe spaces" are able to mentally reconcile that sort of talk with the actions of their dear leader, who continues to prove himself to be the tenderest widdle snowflake America has ever seen?

Cool stuff. ’89 Wilkerson Sport tribute bike build, getting paid, Ranchito coffee, morning Legend of Zelda, afternoon curb session in the works.

Weekend action. Hitting Joan of Arc for food trucks tonight and again tomorrow for a tailgate sale, various mother’s day get-togethers, possible trip to Creve Coeur beach, early skate and/or dirt jump session, staining the back gate, mowing the lawn.

Thursday, May 11, 2017

may eleventh

Five for May 11th:

The joy of parenting. Some evenings everything comes together, and getting the kids to bed is an easy, joyful and painless procedure. Last night was not one of those nights.

Contacts. Stretching my current pair out far longer than I probably should be, with one fresh pair left in the wings before I need to reorder. They’re still working, and I’m a cheap bastard.

Board meeting. Fun and scorching half hour skate sesh with Brian yesterday afternoon at the Schnucks curbs. Our new go-to afternoon skate spot? It’s sure as hell a lot closer than White Birch.

Cool stuff. Amazon Firestick ordered, Starbucks cold brew, MexiHaro video, backyard bikes with Jane and George, fresh-ground almond butter restock,

Bros in print. Cool Hell Night article landed in the RFT yesterday. Check it.

Wednesday, May 10, 2017

may tenth

Five for May 10th:

165. Officially at my lowest weight since I was probably in 7th grade, and will likely be in a 30” waist by the end of summer, all by cutting the crap out of my diet.

Quote of the day. "A Trump supporter would let Trump shit in their mouth if it meant the liberal next to them had to smell it." -unknown

Wii hardly knew ye. Got a pop-up message this morning that as of the end of June, the YouTube app for Wii will no longer be supported. I have to think Netflix and Amazon Prime likely aren’t far behind. It is an eleven year old system, after all.

Cool stuff. Backyard freestyling, pressure-cooker breakfast casserole, afternoon slappy session with Brian (if it doesn’t rain), blueberry muffin Larabar, great ride home yesterday, free Dava pick packs.

Thrasher. I have three months’ worth of issues piled up that I need to get through, which is weird given I usually read them cover to cover within the first couple of days of getting one.

Tuesday, May 9, 2017

may ninth

Five for May 9th:

Bike commute. Awesome ride in this morning. Plenty of sunshine, low headwinds and minimal traffic. I even stretched beforehand. Bookending a workday with a twelve mile wound-trip ride is never a bad thing, even though the ride home tonight is going to be sweltering.

Last night. Good times hanging out with Paul in the backyard and finally getting the brakes on that Dyno dialed in. It’s a tank, but it’ll be fun to goof around on and eventually give to one of the kids. Thanks again to Paul for coming over twice to get the thing up and running.

Quote of the day. “In France this weekend, far-right-wing candidate Marine Le Pen lost the presidential election by millions of votes. And here’s the cool part, in France, if you lose by millions of votes that means you don’t get to be president.” -Conan O’Brien

Cool stuff. Instant-Pot chili, Bevo Bierhall now open, 990 mounts, Chris Moeller interview, seven years of having contacts, playground action after work.

Tuesday soundtrack. Supersuckers, KISS, Gluecifer, Vista Chino, Roky Erickson, Tokyo Blade, Orange Goblin, Pegboy, Loudness, Voivod.

Monday, May 8, 2017

may eighth

Five for May 8th:

George. In some ways, it's hard to believe my little guy will be turning two in a few weeks. In others- i.e. the fact that he's scaling large playground equipment and starting to formulate complete sentences- it totally makes sense.

Hell Night EP release. Killer turnout at Ready Room- my first time there, weirdly. They killed it, as did Black Fast. It’s fun to stay up past bedtime every once in awhile.

May toy show. We scored a Qui-Gonn figure for our Star Wars collection, and Jane got an electronic Max from Secret Life of Pets. Also got to hang out with Greg for a bit. Post-show plans for snacks at Creve Coeur beach were postponed due to still-flooded roads.

Cool stuff. Weekend of awesome weather, free pBuzz at work, Dennis McCoy interview, backyard plans, Ranchito with Brian, whiskey sours, free pike place k-cups.

Stackin’ clips. Sketchy bank-to-curbslide at a DIY skatespot with Andy on Saturday, and on the BMX front I finally stuck a couple of lawnmowers yesterday evening on the driveway. Stoked.

Friday, May 5, 2017

may fifth

Five for May 5th:

America 2017. Hey, a reality television host, sexual predator, and failed mail-order steak entrepreneur just essentially made having a vagina a preexisting condition. So stoked for my wife and daughter today.

Sunshine. Streaming in through the windows this morning with nary a cloud in the sky. It’s a beautiful thing after a few solid days of cold, gray, pissing rain.

E-kit. Finally picked up my repaired cymbal yesterday, which once I get hooked up will give me two crashes and a ride on my electronic kit. After years of playing one that had nothing but a single crash and a hi-hat, it’s almost unreal.

Cool stuff. Free ¼ TS cable from work, morning search for Chin, Bad Brains Band in DC documentary on YouTube, breakfast with George at the kid’s table, afternoon slappy sesh with Brian in the works, The most clueless man in Washington.

Weekend action. Lots of good stuff happening. Hell Night EP release at Ready room, Silver Ballroom punk rock yard sale, friend’s kid’s birthday at the playground, Toy Show with Jane, hanging out with the crew, hopefully mowing the lawn.

Thursday, May 4, 2017

may fourth

Five for May 4th:

Easy mistake. Hey guys, sorry to ruin the fun, but it's actually "may the FORCE be with you". The Force was the thing in the Star Wars movies that like, gave Jedis their powers and stuff. You must all feel pretty silly right now.

Sump pump. Working overtime in our basement right now. Luckily, we have one to begin with.

On the chopping block. Picking up my old Fender Deluxe 112 from Firebrand today and a couple of snare drums I forgot I owned from Kevin on Sunday, all to be sold immediately and potentially turned into a 2017 GT Performer.

Cool stuff. New Dan’s Comp catalog, watching old Behind the Music episodes on YouTube, repainting the bedroom plans/kitchen feng shui.

Quote of the day. “We’re going to have insurance for everybody. There was a philosophy in some circles that if you can’t pay for it, you don’t get it. That’s not going to happen with us. People can expect to have great health care. It will be in a much simplified form. Much less expensive and much better… lower numbers, much lower deductibles." -Donald Trump, a few months before working passionately to do the exact opposite.

Wednesday, May 3, 2017

may third

Five for May 3rd:

Soakage. Three more days of rain coming up. A lot of St. Louisans are getting a not-so-subtle reminder that building stuff on a floodplain does not make a floodplain no longer a floodplain. At least yesterday was nice.

Adventure kid. All of a sudden George is tackling the playground like a seasoned pro, scaling the big climber and going solo down the slides. Kind of nerve-wracking considering he’s still a top-heavy toddler who frequently runs into walls, but hey.

Just a suggestion. To whomever decided to tag the St. Louis statue in Forest Park: maybe next time you want to make a statement, you should try sticking your head in an oven and turning it on.

Cool stuff. Nice sunrise, S&M BMX coozie, re-watching The Office (US), backyard freestylin’, free Dunlop pick packs.

Keeping the dream alive. The STL Rams may be a thing of the past, but thankfully the DCBM Rams live on.

Tuesday, May 2, 2017

may second

Five for May 2nd:

Spring break. Spent the last seven days with Lisa and the kids in the sands and lanais of the greater Venice, Florida area. Great trip. Hit the beach 5 days in a row, saw some alligators, swam a ton, had some rum runners, hiked across a suspended bridge and up into a giant wooden tower, and slept late. Sunny and warm the whole time. Can’t beat it.

Back in the saddle. Phone-forwarding capabilities at the office and deleting unnecessary emails while out helped with the post-vacation workload, but there’s still a ton to catch up on today.

Last night. Andy was spinning records at Crow’s Nest and Brian was at Anthrax, but our 5:30 am wakeup call yesterday morning and day of travel and getting the house in order made going out and doing anything pretty much inconceivable. Ahwell.

Cool stuff. New issue of Thrasher, SC Garbage Pail Kids series, no one got sunburned, new Odyssey cable for the Dyno, iPhone photo dump, morning slappy hour, daily morning workout regimen, grocery restock.

Tuesday soundtrack. Doomriders, Exodus, Danava, Angel Witch, Sleep, Death Breath, Candlemass, High On Fire, Diamond Head, American Sharks.
