june twenty-ninth

Five for June 29th:

Foiled again. The streets were soaked with rain all morning so I didn’t bother getting my riding stuff together, and of course when I looked outside five minutes before I had to leave, it was pretty much completely dry and totally rideable.

George. He looked like a character straight out of Lord of the Flies last night following an hour or so of digging around in the dirt at the playground.

Quote of the day. "The question I get asked by religious people all the time is, without God, what’s to stop me from raping all I want? And my answer is: I do rape all I want. And the amount I want is zero. And I do murder all I want, and the amount I want is zero. The fact that these people think that if they didn’t have this person watching over them that they would go on killing, raping rampages is the most self-damning thing I can imagine. I don't want to do that. Right now, without any god, I don't want to jump across this table and strangle you. I have no desire to strangle you. I have no desire to flip you over and rape you." - Penn Jillette

Cool stuff. Pick Two at Vernon’s, great neighbors, hitting the ditch with the Schmitt Stix Rip Saw today, Rage at the Badlands on YouTube, coffee to-go, GT Seriously Fun Bangers, Spaceballs at 30.

Long weekend action. Plans for Friday night camping appear to be out the window with storms looming, which is a bummer, but I’m still pretty jazzed for five days off. Hanging out with Greg, swimming, trip to the beach, drumming, skateboarding, BMX riding, enjoying the new couch and watching fireworks from our front porch are all in the high-probability category.

june twenty-eighth

Five for June 28th:

No ride. Had to skip out today as I have to bring home a guitar case from work that a buddy is buying from me, and schlepping that six miles on a bike on a steamy afternoon didn’t seem like the smartest idea.

You get what you pay for. Our disintegrating old polyester sectional from Big Lots is officially out on the curb, having served us well for five years or so. New leather one should be delivered Friday. Till then, we’re on the floor.

Quote of the day. “I’m beginning to think the American Dream is an Olive Garden at the bottom of a coal mine.” -Jason

Cool stuff. Work coffee restock, La Croix party pack, STL ramp footage from the late 80’s, potential White Birch session in the works, giant bucket of sidewalk chalk for the kids, Thrasher subscription renewal.

Required reading. I don’t know how to explain to you that you should care about other people.

june twenty-seventh

Five for June 27th:

Six months ago today. On December 27th 2016, I dropped the crap out of my diet (soda, candy, beer, processed foods with no nutritional value, empty calories, etc.) and began full-time clean eating. Since then I've shed about 25 lbs and 4 waist sizes, and have more energy than I've had in years. Not trying to preach, but the moral of the story is, you are what you eat. Only took me 39 years to figure that out. Here’s to many more months and years.

Date night. Took Jane out to Mr. Wizard’s for a dip cone and to Berra Park playground to take advantage of the unbelievable weather. Best times with my best girl.

Bike commute. Good ride in this morning- so cool out I almost wished I’d brought a hoodie. Tomorrow and Thursday are looking rideable as well, so we might have another four-day ride week happening.

Cool stuff. New sectional for the back room, fresh pair of contacts, confederate monument will be gone from Forest Park by Friday, rad session at the ditch, Trump’s Lies: the Definitive List, bearing repair.

Tuesday soundtrack. Havok, Naked Raygun, Armored Saint, D.R.I., Kreator, Municipal Waist, Riot, Zero Boys, TSOL, Dag Nasty, Agent Orange.

Monday, June 26, 2017

june twenty-sixth

Five for June 26th:

Explorer 200. We’re officially boat owners, even if the boat in question is a little two-person raft kit I got at Aldi for ten bucks. Still awesome. It’ll be fun to take it out on the river and to Creve Coeur Lake for some cruising around.

Weekend highlights. Riding bikes and exploring the neighborhood with Jane, camping trip prep, solo skate session at the Arnold mini ramp, backyard freestyling, hanging out with Rebecca and kids.

Pedaling in. Rode in today and am planning on tomorrow as well, though the remainder of the week is questionable. Literally did not break a sweat this morning, the temperature was so mild. Best June ever.

Cool stuff. Free k-cups and cuties at the office, afternoon ditch jam with Brian, Sessions: Last Day at Lasekland, attic jam, Streetstyle in Tempe revisited, SNES classic edition.

Contacts. I think today is my last day for this pair, which I’ve stretched as far as any pair of 30-day contact lenses could ever reasonably asked to go. Let’s just say it has been a lot longer than 30 days.

june twenty-third

Five for June 23rd:

48 miles. I don’t remember the last time I rode in to work four out of five days, but it was definitely before the kids were born. This morning was a little sketchy, with lingering dark clouds threatening to open up, but I managed to avoid rain and made it in in record time. Feels awesome.

Backyard buffet. Our garden beds are blowing up right now. Carrots, tomatoes, squash, radishes, and more greens than we know what to do with. The apples are coming in on the tree and there might even be some watermelons planted out there.

Gullwing Molecules of Motion. Somehow the existence of this video eluded me completely until I stumbled on it this morning on YouTube. Thanks, internet.

Cool stuff. Getting paid, block of Gulf Wax for the ditch, learning frontside disasters, Ranchito with Tom and Brian, new (used) SC Corey O’Brien zip hoodie.

Weekend action. Looks like it’s going to be one for the record books in the weather department. Mercs and Tre Serpenti at Tap Room, mowing the lawn, hitting the pool, hanging out with the kids, maybe a morning trip to the dirt jumps, general relaxation.

Thursday, June 22, 2017

june twenty-second

Five for June 22nd:

Double duty. Geared up for twelve miles of riding and an afternoon of ditch shredding today. Looks like tomorrow will be rainy, so this is probably the last day for both til' next week.

America 2017. There is no longer any doubt that the police can officially murder anyone they want anytime they want for any reason and face no consequences for their actions save for perhaps some paid time off. And we get to continue funding it.

Morning viewing. (parts of) Santa Cruz Streets on Fire, GT Seriously Fun, H-Street Hokus Pokus, Sick Boys, Blues Clues, Dora the Explorer.

Cool stuff. Free sheet of Hell Night grip tape, leftover curry, new shorts, phone system at work that isn’t about to die, Japanology Plus: Japan Capsule Toys, raspberry blackberry sparkling water.

Clifton Park movie night. Looks like it’s going to be Field of Dreams this year- one of my all-time favorites. Saturday, August 5th- come hang out.

Wednesday, June 21, 2017

june twenty-first

Five for June 21st:

Go skateboarding day. I don’t know about the rest of you, but any day that officially celebrates going out and skating is good in my book. Celebrating this afternoon with another hot trip to the 170 ditch. Go shred.

Camping trip. We’re planning our first one since before the kids were born. Should be interesting.

Bagged up. Trashed my threadbare Metropack and retired the messenger bag, with everything now moved over to my sweet new Element Jaywalker. This thing rules and is set up to take some abuse, which it shall indeed receive.

Cool stuff. GT Seriously Fun video premier, dusk summer solstice walk with Henry to the park, Motorhead Bomber on Top of the Pops, veggie scramble, kids react to Iron Maiden, stackin' clips, playing Mia with Jane.

Quote of the day. "Trump has been ruled by compulsions, obsessions and vindictiveness, expressed nearly daily on Twitter. He has demonstrated an egotism that borders on solipsism. His political skills as president have been close to nonexistent. His White House is divided, incompetent and chaotic, and key administration jobs remain unfilled. His legislative agenda has gone nowhere. He has told constant, childish, refuted, uncorrected lies, and demanded and habituated deception among his underlings. He has humiliated and undercut his staff while requiring and rewarding flattery. He has promoted self-serving conspiracy theories. He has displayed pathetic, even frightening, ignorance on policy matters foreign and domestic. He has inflicted his ethically challenged associates on the nation. He is dead to the poetry of language and to the nobility of the political enterprise, viewing politics as conquest rather than as service." -Michael Gershon, prominent Republican and former top aide to GWB.

june twentieth

Five for June 20th:

Summer. Kicking off in style with sunshine and insanely mild temperatures, which I plan to take full advantage of: biked in to work, skate session planned at the ditch this afternoon, biking home.

Bigfoot footage. The insanely rare Zeltzer Seltzer/Island Water Sports Ramp n’ Roll contest video from the 1987 St. Louis VP Fair surfaced on YouTube a couple of days ago. I’m guessing at some point this received some sort of commercial release, but it’s about as rare as they come. Dig it.

Quote of the day. “So let’s get this straight. A rabidly anti-gay congressman who recently voted to let mentally ill people have access to guns and who wants to repeal the ACA had his life saved by a lesbian after he was shot by a mentally ill person and is currently under hospital care paid for by government-funded health insurance. The irony is staggering.” -unknown

Cool stuff. Korean BBQ bowl, new issue of Decibel, Impaled Northern Moonforest Return of the Necrowizard video, Starbots- The Greatest Cereal Toys Ever, free Powell Crossbones sticker.

Tuesday soundtrack. Saint Vitus, Monolord, Pallbearer, Kyuss, Mountain Witch, The Sword, Electric Wizard, Orchid, Cathedral.

Monday, June 19, 2017

june nineteenth

Five for June 19th:

Father’s day. Best one yet. Got a sweet card from Jane, and Lisa gave me an amazing early birthday present/dad’s day gift in the form of a Bones Brigade Mike McGill bottlenose which is one of the coolest things I own. Topped it off with a trip up the river road for some dinner and dancing at the loading dock. I’m a lucky guy.

Bike commuting. Had an awesome ride in this morning- cool breeze, no humidity, low traffic. I almost talked myself out of riding, but I’m glad I got it together. Planning on 36-48 miles on the saddle this week.

Attic feng shui. Rearranged a bit on the third floor, moving the desk to the other side for a more dedicated office area for Lisa and freeing up some floor space in the skate lair. Also got rid of a ton of stuff, including a stack of old decks and some other junk.

Cool stuff. Powell Crossbones shirt, hitting the pool, toddler hour at Sky Zone trampoline park, Mike “Hucker” Clark and Steve Caballero Livelihood episodes, iPhone photo dump, hitting Ranchito, CafĂ© Bustelo, Animal Chin Have You Seen Him lapel pin.

Bummers. Flat tire on the Haro Master, pulled a muscle in my right shoulder, Brian forgot his board today so we can’t skate the ditch.

Friday, June 16, 2017

june sixteenth

Five for June 16th:

Firefly squad. Jane stayed up late last night to catch fireflies in the backyard and had the absolute time of her life. By the time we packed it in she’d probably caught fifty of them, and of course given each of them names.

Ditch destruction. Hitting it again today, which will make four out of five days this week shredding during lunch. It would’ve been five out of five if it weren’t for the freak rainstorm on Wednesday. That place is addictive.

George. He’s really starting to put sentences together and communicate at a near-conversational level. It’s amazing to watch. He continues to be the sweetest little guy that has ever existed, as well.

Cool stuff. Lasekland Last Stand, Mini Logo Lift Kits, working out a sale/trade with Paul, Pence Lawyers Up, remembering to bring lunch all week, office flip-flops.

Weekend action. Pretty mellow one on deck with little in the way of concrete plans, which is fine by me. Father’s day lunch at Loading Dock with various family, early skate/trail ride session (weather permitting), swimming at Maplewood, whatever else comes along.

Thursday, June 15, 2017

june fifteenth

Five for June 15th:

Last night. Lisa was gone for the evening and I got sucked into watching Sidekicks on YouTube and watched the whole thing before descending into a weird, depressing Jonathan Brandis internet wormhole. Thanks, life.

America 2017. I didn’t hear the question, but the answer is more guns.

Our moron president. Donald Trump, the career public nuisance and real-estate grifter who somehow found his way into politics, is now under investigation for obstruction of justice, because he is a gigantic lumbering idiot who thinks the rules don’t apply to him.

Cool stuff. Morning attic drum jams, fish tacos, S&M bikes 30 year party, cashew cookie Larabars, Skeleton Key koozies, 170 afternoon skate session in the works.

Lawn laziness. Buckled down and got out yard in order last night. Dog poop scooped, front, back and sides fully mowed, weeds whacked, and edges edged. I guess I’m getting spoiled by finally having a gas mower and not having to worry about the grass getting too tall to reel-cut. Sorry, neighbors.

Wednesday, June 14, 2017

june fourteenth

Five for June 14th:

Humidity. It’s officially back in full force, which is not necessarily hurting my motivation to do stuff outdoors- but it’s also not helping.

Long Strange Trip. Finished up the six-part Grateful Dead documentary last night and it was great. While still not a huge Dead fan, it gave me a whole new appreciation for them. Highly recommended.

Too Tuff to die. The Skyway factory in California is closing after 30 plus years. Another chink in the armor for BMX, even though the brand is apparently soldiering on.

Cool stuff. Element Jaywalker backpack on order, Savatage t-shirt, fun line at the ditch yesterday, new Days Gone footage, post-ride coconut water, close shave, Hesh Sesh with Jimmy Walker at Scrap skatepark, circa '91.

Quote of the day. “America’s favorite pastime interrupts baseball game.” -Chris P.

Tuesday, June 13, 2017

june thirteenth

Five for June 13th:

Action packed Monday. Dozen miles on the bike, hour-long sweltering ditch skate sesh at lunch, and a little backyard flatland after the kids went to bed. Today will be pretty much exactly the same, except sub “mow the lawn” for the post-bedtime activity.

Something to look forward to. There will come a point in the future- distant thought it may be- where I will get to spend months or years without the thought of Donald Trump passing through my brain.

Powell reissues. The summer throwback lineup includes a couple of real gems, namely the Ray Barbee “fire hydrant” and Nicky Guerrero “mask”. Double-drilled, of course. My only complaint- and it’s a minor one- is the Barbee is the exact same red colorway as the previous “ragdoll” reissue. But hey.

Cool stuff. Old school Perry Mervar footage, Rick Wilson anti-Trump tweetstorm, free Starbucks k-cups, Dream Yard 3, leftover curry with cauliflower rice.

Tuesday soundtrack. Electric Citizen, Grateful Dead, Deicide, High on Fire, Black Tusk, Spirit Caravan, Lamb of God, Converge, Iron Reagan, Overkill.

Monday, June 12, 2017

june twelfth

Five for June 12th:

Weekend gnarliness. Solo BMX dirt jumps at Figure Eight, skate session at JB, sweltering backyard flatland jam while the kids napped, couple of speed runs down the park waterslide, hundreds of pushups.

Back on the saddle. Nice early ride in to the office this morning, complete with an ATM stop on the way in. Made it with ten minutes to spare to towel off before the Monday meeting.

Head East. Went up the river road on Saturday for some sightseeing, pea picking at Three Rivers farm and dinner on the patio at Elijah P’s with the crew.

Cool stuff. Better Off Dead on YouTube, Through the Lens: Industry Talk with Ron Wilkerson, Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee, two new pairs of $1 sunglasses, hanging out with Jane at Brian’s place, afternoon ditch skate plans, bowl of cuties at work.

Spring. This has to have been the nicest one I can remember in terms of stretches of amazing weather. Summer (and brutal humidity) is slowly creeping in, but hey. Still better than winter any day.

Thursday, June 8, 2017

june eighth

Five for June 8th:

Bike commuting. Beautiful morning for a ride to work. If the weather could be like this year-round, I would not complain.

170 ditch. Another afternoon skate jam in the works for today, which will make three days in a row at the spot. It’s super fun and five minutes away, so why not? Have to take advantage of low humidity while we can.

Quote of the day. “Is it odd to no one else that all the while we're peering through the Hubble, driving rovers around Mars, and having informative conversations with our refrigerators, some of us are still killing each other over whose Bronze Age nomadic desert goat-herder's spirit guide is stronger? Please tell me I'm not the only one seeing this.” -Tommy Halloran

Cool stuff. Comey Day, new GT BMX Seriously Fun video debuting on the 21st, Donald Trump’s presidency is an American crisis, Bone Deth Street Noise, stack of new books for Jane, Long, Strange Trip Grateful Dead documentary.

Weekend action. Taking tomorrow off for a three-day weekend. Highlights to include a trip down the River Road for sightseeing, vegetable picking and dinner, seeing an Iron Maiden tribute band at Delmar Hall, hitting Figure 8 trails for some dirt jumps on the Performer, Maplewood pool, and whatever else comes along. Seeya Monday.

Wednesday, June 7, 2017

june seventh

Five for June 7th:

Last night. Always a good time chilling with Greg talking shit, riding bikes and listening to punk rock in his garage. It’s just awesome to be hanging out with that dude more in general.

Ditch attack. Struggle sesh at 170 yesterday- brought a board that more or less sucked on that terrain and it was kind of a bummer. Hitting it again today on my old school Jason Jessee V8 with Powell Bombers, which is much better equipped for the job.

Work snack restock. Nuts, bananas and fresh fruit, raisins, pitted dates, jasmine tea, and a couple of Larabars. Bam.

Cool stuff. Dinner on the deck, watermelon Perrier, Greg’s Lineage Sport, incognito option on Google Chrome, watching BMX videos with George, three-day weekend.

Quote of the day. “At some point you run out of superlatives and metaphors for ‘unprecedented”. –Dan Rather

Tuesday, June 6, 2017

june sixth

Five for June 6th:

Today. Should be a fun one: beautiful weather, afternoon ditch skate session with Brian, dinner on the back porch with the crew, hanging out with Greg in the pm.

Lunch swap. Accidentally grabbed Lisa’s lunch from the fridge. At least I got some egg salad out of the deal.

Kid hacks. We figured out the secret to getting Jane to nap in the afternoons, which is something she still really needs but had stopped doing for the most part. Definitely a game-changer for her overall demeanor in the evenings.

Cool stuff. Four days of low humidity, basketball at the playground, setting up the Salba Bevel, Starbucks cold brew run, Tip to Tail series revisited, free Paige trucker cap, Chuck Berry Chuck new album stream.

Tuesday soundtrack. The Sword, Dio, Kyuss, Aerosmith, Deicide, Earth Crisis, Judge, Iron Maiden, Siege.

Monday, June 5, 2017

june fifth

Five for June 5th:

Good trade. Swapped a stack of broken/warped decks I was about to throw in the trash for a 8.8 Creature board and set of 55mm Mike Anderson Spitfire wheels with Andy. I’ll take that deal any day. Thanks bud.

Back to the beach. Next time we’ll remember things like towels, changes of clothes, sunscreen, appropriate splashwear, and something to shield us from the blazing sun. The kids had a good time at least.

Tuneage. Stoked to have brokered a deal for two ultra-rare Dan Armstrong prototypes I found in my warehouse to go to Stephen from the Descendents. There's no more stalwart a player of these things than him and no guitarist better suited for them.

Cool stuff. Heroin Skateboards Bath Salts DVD rip, Saturday afternoon at the pool, fresh watermelon, My Homie Sells Homies documentary, Hell Night is one of this year’s STL 77, morning trains with George, fun JB sesh with some of the old man crew.

Rainy day. A downpour shot down plans to hit the pool yesterday, so I introduced Jane to the wonders of the box fan tent and averted a potential crisis with a stormy campout in her room.

Friday, June 2, 2017

june second

Five for June 2nd:

Good old days. A year ago our biggest problem as a nation was that woman with the Chewbacca mask receiving a full-ride college scholarship for filming herself acting like a toddler in her minivan.

170 crew. Out in full force for an afternoon session at the ditch. Brian brought the Bluetooth jambox, the tunes were blasting, and much raging occurred. There are definitely worse ways to spend a lunch break.

Quote of the day. “If you think pollution isn't harmful, pull your car into the garage, close the door and leave the car running. I'm sure you'll be fine.” -Luke

Cool stuff. Ranchito with Aaron, work coffee restock, evening at the playground, Bessy Baseball Shopkins card from Jane, Climate Mayors movement, Maurice "Drob" Meyer interview.

Weekend action. Good one coming up: Jag-Wires at San Loo tonight, taking the kids to the beach and the pool tomorrow, Essential Knots at Foam, mowing the lawn, riding/skating where possible.

Thursday, June 1, 2017

june first

Five for June 1st:

Ride/skate/ride. Now here’s how you make the most of a workday and kick off the first month of summer in style.

Just the facts. The word "covfefe", while perhaps not widely-known, has actually been an actively-used term in lexicons spanning the globe for hundreds (if not thousands) of years, and has traditionally been used to describe a *very* specific subset of the populace; namely illiterate, senile sexual predators and failed mail-order steak hucksters that ascend to high levels of society and/or government despite possessing cognitive faculties not exceeding that of your typical toddler.

Powell rider’s manual. At long last, a copy of the mythical Powell Peralta “Operation Motherhood” team handbook from 1989 has surfaced. While pretty fascinating and unbelievable given what skating looks like today, it's way less stringent than I feel it was always made out to be, and a lot of the wording in there is super jokey and tongue-in-cheek. Awesome nonetheless.

Cool stuff. Variflex Voodoo delivery, hitting the playground with the kids, Aaron in STL, South Park YouTube live stream, afternoon ditch sesh with Rick and Brian, ant annihilation.

It’s not all bad news. Ukrainian Zoo Unveils Statue Of Slayer's Tom Araya For Some Reason.
