july thirty-first

Five for July 31st:

Day one. Rolled the dice riding in today, as spotty rain lurks all afternoon, but hopefully it holds off. This morning was too nice to pass up.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Scavenged the building this morning for coffee, finally coming upon a single Maxwell House K-cup in the back of a kitchen drawer. Guess I need to make a grocery run.

He-Man. The original 1983 Masters of the Universe series might legitimately be Jane’s favorite show. We watch at least one episode together every morning, and she usually gets in at least one or two more by herself while I run around getting ready.

Cool stuff. Surprise carton of Halo Top from Lisa, quick lunch break flatland session, Hang On/ Safari Hunt combo cartridge, clean sheets, squash noodles.

Tuesday soundtrack. Moon Tooth, Terrorizer, Kadavar, Gang Green, D.R.I., Sick Of It All, Dio, Byzantine, Hot Snakes, Dark Angel, Madball, SNFU, Tom Petty, The Who, Montrose, High On Fire.

july thirtieth

Five for July 30th:

Das Bevo. Great patio with awesome food and tons of stuff to keep the kids occupied including board games, hula hoops, a decommissioned fire truck, and some good live tunes. We’ll be back.

Sega. Hooked up my old Master System in the attic yesterday. Still works and everything. Epic games of Shinobi, Hang-On and Golvellius: Valley of Doom forthcoming.

Rock n' roll circus. Killer turnout for the Hell Night/ Sweat Shoppe split release at Firebird. Both bands crushed it, with bonus short sets by a bunch of bands storming the stage for one-minute songs and a quick few tunes by NWBD. Bonus: remembered earplugs.

Cool stuff. Sno-cones at Rocket Park with Janey, Aldi cold brew, skating the 170 ditch and WG, Wildwood playdate for the goobs, pre-show flatland session at the spot, Dennis Enarson Capslock video.

Fall in July. Much as I am enjoying the relative lack of scalding heat and humidity as of late, I don’t know if I’m quite ready for hoodie weather just yet. We still have a few weeks of pool season and I’d really like to be able to take advantage of ‘em.

july twenty-seventh

Five for July 27th:

Fifty-odd. Another four out of five days on the saddle this week. Last night’s slog back to the house was slow and wet, but I’m glad I got through it (and didn’t opt for the much-simpler ride home with a coworker) because today is another one for the record books in the weather department.

Quote of the day. “If you’ve had sex, but have never had to pay for it, you’re a better deal maker than Donald Trump.” -John Hartzell

The McKenzie Tapes. If you’re looking for some new stuff to listen to, this gigantic online archive of live sets from some the best punk/indie bands of the 80’s and 90’s, tape-recorded and meticulously cataloged by a former Maxwell’s employee should do the trick.

Cool stuff. Deadwood movie is officially greenlit, new Nick Watts edit, afternoon 170 ditch skate with Brian, more attic Star Wars, homemade trail mix, tightened up the bottom bracket of the General, Real Genius on Netflix.

Weekend action. Dinner and drinks at Das Bevo, Hell Night/ Sweat Shoppe record release at Firebird, taking the goobs on a playdate to Wildwood, mowing the lawn, possible flatland sesh with Greg, early morning trip to JB or the pump track.

Thursday, July 26, 2018

july twenty-sixth

Five for July 26th:

Some assembly required. Two hours, one missing (and subsequently retrieved) cushion, and a metric ton of cardboard later, and the new couch from Ikea is built and ready for sittin’. Still plenty of work to do, but room usage in our house is now pretty much maximized.

Day three. 12.6 more miles of pedaling the road bike going down today, after a day off yesterday. The weather is looking nice tomorrow- should be a solid fifty miles or so for the week when all is said and done.

Rock the vote. My amazing wife wrote a great op-ed for the Post-Dispatch outlining yet another vastly important (and less-discussed) reason to vote no on Prop A. Check it.

Cool stuff. Backyard peppers and squash, limited edition Rad trading cards, Haro ’86 Raglan, weekend skate session plans, cauliflower crust pizza, Vintage Vinyl’s metal section just tripled in size, French-press coffee.

Six Flags. I still owe Jane a trip to ride the Mine Train and the Log Flume before summer ends- but when did that place become so insanely expensive? Anyone have a groupon they want to float me?

Wednesday, July 25, 2018

july twenty-fifth

Five for July 25th:

Sectionality. Our new, slightly-downsized-for-the-front-room Ikea sectional is getting delivered today. If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the last few nights, it’s that traditional couches no longer work for us. Now I just have to put the thing together.

Bike fixes. Got some much-needed new stem bolts on the 87’s. The FST’s were pillaged for the Invert and the bolts on the General were so rusted and stripped out I wasn’t sure I was even going to be able to get them off. Now just have to replace the gyro cable on the Master.

Quote of the day. “If Obama was president and a tape existed of him telling his lawyer to pay off his mistress in cash the GOP would have repealed the Emancipation Proclamation by now.” -Matt Oswalt

Cool stuff. High Brew double espresso, farm-grown cantaloupe, space adventures with Jane, carrot noodles, evening at the playground with the goobs and neighborhood crew, attic plans.

Seoul Taco. Steak burrito bowl with kimchi rice in t-minus thirty minutes. Or maybe the waffles and gogi? Playing this one by ear.

Tuesday, July 24, 2018

july twenty-fourth

Five for July 24th:

Fall Skateone catalog. Some killer stuff coming down the pike from Powell. Personal highlights: Steve Saiz "Feathers" in a natural stain, team Bug in OG shape, cobalt blue Welinder street model, Winged Ripper beach towel, Vato Rat and Skull & Sword longsleeves, colorway book.

Gray day. I didn’t realize until it was too late that I am sporting gray shoes, gray shorts, a gray shirt and a gray hat today. Solid.

Red Bull TV. Their shitty Firestick app is finally working, which means I can watch the Bits Of Baco documentary on something other than a laptop.

Cool stuff. Morning He-Man with Jane, frontloading orders, ’87 AFA/ Socko banner on eBay (way overpriced, but cool to see), iPhone photo dump, week of intermittent fasting, Berra Park flatland session, miles 18-24 for the week.

Tuesday soundtrack. Dwarves, Jawbreaker, Operation Ivy, ALL, Zero Boys, Wipers, Graveyard, Earthless, Kadavar, Valley of the Sun, Elder, Pantera, Snapcase, The Clash, Reverend Horton Heat.

Monday, July 23, 2018

july twenty-third

Five for July 23rd:

Rearrangements. The back room has been converted to Lisa’s office/the kids’ play room/ guest room, with the front room logically morphing into the full-time living room/TV room. Lots left to do to polish it all off, but it’s getting there.

Weekend shreds. Had an overdue skate session at the new pump track in Webster Groves with Andy and Brian (identical to Larimore, but 40 minutes closer) and a fun bike jam on the Invert with Janey in tow at Berra Park.

Day one. Unseasonably cool ride in to work this morning- it almost felt like early spring. Didn’t even bust out the riding jersey, so mild was the temperature. Good to get the legs moving.

Cool stuff. Homemade pesto (with backyard basil), dinner with the crew on the patio at Onesto, night hangs with Greg, two bags of stem bolts, Misfits/Samhain/Danzig box sets at Vintage Vinyl, George is finally tall enough to get into Småland at Ikea, Yuengling.

Office quote of the day. “It’s pretty much like the last scene in Armageddon. Or a Gushers commercial.” -Seth

Friday, July 20, 2018

july twentieth

Five for July 20th:

3/5. My streak of riding three days per week this season remains unbroken. This morning was as beautiful an early ride as you could ask for- low humidity, sunny, mid-seventies. Unbeatable.

Life changes. Without getting into specifics, a couple of friends are going through some big ones. Here’s to better things on the horizon.

Forever young. If anyone doubts the fact that BMX and skateboarding are the literal fountains of youth, they need look no further than Dennis McCoy, who just spun a 900 at X-Games at age 51, and Tony Hawk who recently did one at 48.

Cool stuff. New episode of Grosso’s Loveletters to Skateboarding is live, getting paid, Reeses’ concretes at Ted Drewes with Lisa and Jane, four more OG 2 Hip KOV stickers, lawn is mowed, Ranchito Friday, ripping evening freestyle jam at the spot.

Weekend action. Hopefully selling a couch, building up the Invert with Greg, hanging with the goobs, running errands, skating the new Webster pump track,

Thursday, July 19, 2018

july nineteenth

Five for July 19th:

Last night. Had a good flatland session going at Berra Park, right up until I snapped one of my back brake cables at the gyro on the Master. At least I got an hour or so of riding in beforehand, and luckily it didn’t happen mid-trick.

Fitz’s. Got a free lunch there yesterday with Brian and Lori, courtesy of the boss man. Skipped on the obligatory root beer, but their Mediterranean wrap is on point.

Monnors Dorbert. The name of the rabbit in a short story George made up on the drive home yesterday afternoon.

Cool stuff. Snakebite Aaron Ross podcast, deck staining is finally done (along with a fresh coat in the kids’ play fort), e-drums re-dialed, OG Shadows Fall pick, pomelo grapefruit Klarbrunn.

Half Cabs. We’ll see how they hold up, but these may be my go-to shoe going forward. Comfortable, super grippy, tons of ankle padding without sacrificing style, great for skating or riding. Can’t believe I’ve never had a pair of these before.

Wednesday, July 18, 2018

july eighteenth

Five for July 18th:

Pump it up. I’ve been planning a trip back to Larimore Park to skate the pump track for a while now, but it looks like I won’t have to make that trek after all, as a new one has apparently materialized in the much-closer confines of Webster Groves sometime over the last couple of weeks. Excited to check it out.

Free stickers at Vintage Vinyl. Grateful Dead, Slope Records, Jeff Beck, Metallica, Dr. Dog, Of Montreal, Merge Records, Post Animal, Quiet Slang, Jim James, Fat Possum Records, Prof, Father John Misty, Sofaburn.

Wilkerson Wednesday. No Haro nerd’s collection is complete without the legendary March 1987 issue of Boys’ Life magazine, featuring Ron Wilkerson on the cover, which I snagged on eBay yesterday for $1.09.

Cool stuff. Van is fixed, office snack restock, free lunch at Fitz’s, reading Junie B. Jones with Janey, Zeronine number plates.

Quote of the day. “I would say that I completely believe President Trump misspoke and that he has full faith and confidence in the members of our intelligence community and understands that Putin and Russia were fully responsible for intervening in our election. Sorry. I meant wouldn’t.” -Rep Adam Schiff

Tuesday, July 17, 2018

july seventeenth

Five for July 17th:

Change of pace. We got off early yesterday due to computer issues at the workplace, so I put in a few extra miles and took the long way home around Forest Park, past the Central West End and along 40 to the turtle park bridge. I should do that route more often.

Vehicular woes. Expensive fix for the van AC, still need to replace the windshield, bunch of work needs to get done on the Rogue. It’s a good thing I’m barely driving these days.

Quote of the day. “Sometimes you read a sentence that really encapsulates the craziness of this era. Like this one: ‘That’s the president of the United States saying he has equal confidence in the president of Russia and the American intelligence community.’" -Ezra Klein

Cool stuff. Working on My Book About Me with Jane, Props Tread Magazine issues 1 and 2 archived (3 and 4 coming soon), new tubes in the 87 FST and the DMC, not waking up at 5 am, mixed berry RX bar, frittata to-go.

Tuesday soundtrack. Carbonas, Propagandhi, Freedom Hawk, Cerebral Ballzy, Rites of Spring, Sugar, T. Rez, Solace, Circle Jerks, Teen Idles, Cream, Exodus, Venom.

Monday, July 16, 2018

july sixteenth

Five for July 16th:

Day one. Made it door to door in 25 minutes this morning through a literal fog of humidity. I have no idea what happened in Dogtown over the weekend, but the entire neighborhood smelled like vomit. Three-day max on riding this week, as there are a couple of necessary drive days, but hopefully I’ll get ‘em all in and keep the streak alive.

Future business leaders of America. Jane comes into the kitchen with some random business card she found. "I do NOT want to do business with these people!” she shouts before throwing it into the garbage.

The deck. Got home Friday night, slapped on some old Pro-Tec kneepads and laid down a coat of stain on the back deck, which dried just in time for a veritable typhoon to hit Saturday afternoon. Still need to do the steps and railings, but the hard part is over.

Cool stuff. Castlevania season one revisited, free Italian Roast at work, ’88 Invert delivered, jungle adventures with the kids at Botanical Garden, gogi and waffles at Seoul Taco, new tube for the Master, more OG 2 Hip stickers, Sasha Baron Cohen Who Is America? first look.

Quote of the day. “Mike Matheny was hired after the Loop Trolley was announced and fired before it began service. He was manager for 6.5 seasons.” -Ian Froeb

Friday, July 13, 2018

july thirteenth

Five for July 13th:

Friday the 13th. IMHO, it should be like 7/11 day, but instead of free Slurpees you get complementary VHS copies of Jason Takes Manhattan.

Stats for the week. Four out of five days of bike commuting to work for about fifty total miles, three nights riding flatland at Berra park for a few more (plus some bloody shins), innumerable articles of sweat-soaked clothing.

London Trump protests. Thousands upon thousands of mobilized protestors wielding a giant diapered baby-Trump parade balloon is a thing of unparalleled beauty. If only Americans could be so vocal.

Cool stuff. Tablet rabbit races with Janey, Shenmue Remastered, Bob Burnquist: Being video, DLR soundboard, Led Zeppelin considering a 50th anniversary reunion show.

Weekend action. Staining the back deck, hanging out with the goobs while Lisa goes to CoMo for a baby shower, hopefully getting in a skate session at JB, riding, putting the yard back together, obtaining dog medication, shaving my head.

Thursday, July 12, 2018

july twelfth

Five for July 12th:

Riding jersey. Great as it is to not be completely soaking wet with sweat after riding, I either need to invest in another one or start doing laundry every day, because that thing gets ripe fast.

Power of the Force. Jane, George and I played with Star Wars toys in the attic while watching a bit of The Empire Strikes Back last night. Jane was digging real-life Chewbacca and George was all about the snow speeders.

Shoe death. Destroyed pairs of Vox Troopers and Vans Sk8 Lows going in the garbage, with a new cheap pair of Half Cabs (my first, weirdly) en route to take the rest of this summer’s flatland abuse. Got to have that ankle padding.

Cool stuff. Fresh contacts, more eBay sales/access to all the packing materials I could ever need, Alvarez stickers, gogi bowl, skate spot discovered outside the post office.

Quote of the day. “Local grocery store is fundraising so schools can have supplies. And no one seems to see how horrifying this is. We cut taxes by trillions for the uberwealthy, but the kids who are our future can’t have school supplies unless people of far less wealth pay for them. Sociopathy.” -Kurt Eichenwald

Wednesday, July 11, 2018

july eleventh

Five for July 11th:

Day off. Much as I love the bike commutes, it’s always nice to have the built-in midweek break to recuperate. Plus, I get to take the kids through Forest Park to say hi to all their statue friends and see the waterfall.

Luke Cage. Netflix’s never-ending onslaught of Marvel-based shows are definitely hit and miss, but this one is probably my overall favorite. Almost through season two, and it’s great.

Freestyling fanatics. Got closer than ever before on half-lashes last night, almost rolling out of a (very) short one. Getting the feel for them is half the battle. Stoked to be making some progress lately. Berra Park is the difference-maker

Cool stuff. Schnucks gift card, Powell Vato Rat and McGill skull & snake hoodies, back down to 155 lbs, ant annihilation, lox, 2 Hip Ride Like a Man on Netflix,

Seoul Taco. Meeting up with some friends this afternoon for a long-overdue steak burrito bowl and obligatory trip to the Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out themed restroom.

Tuesday, July 10, 2018

july tenth

Five for July 10th:

Day two. Nice, humid ride in to work this morning for another early meeting. Four days and a good 50+ miles on the saddle this week is looking completely attainable, weather-wise. Also got in a ripping, sweat-soaked flatland jam at the park last night after we got the kids to bed.

Timing is everything. I don’t necessarily believe reissues hurt the value of original decks too much but they definitely don’t help. That said, looks like I sold my OG Powell Bug on eBay for full price in the nick of time, as a reissue in the exact same color and shape was just announced.

Out of the cellar. Got a huge pile of unused kids’ stuff out of the basement and into the van to drop off at Goodwill. A veritable mountain of baby swings, car seats, training toilets, strollers, bags of toys, and more. Feels good to purge, and free up some floor space.

Cool stuff. New e-tom for the kit, morning dream recounting with Jane, home rearrangement plans, 1990 Aquafest Vert and Street contest footage, much-needed desktop printer.

Tuesday soundtrack. Summerlands, Mondo Generator, Earthless, Troubled Horse, The Picturebooks, Cauldron, Shellac, Blue Cheer, Elder, Municipal Waste, Rosetta, Descendents, The Drips, Rolling Stones.

Monday, July 9, 2018

july ninth

Five for July 9th:

First fireworks. Great time at Sublette Park with the Clifton crew on Saturday night for the kids’ first-ever actual fireworks show. They hung in like champs til’ way after bedtime and loved every second of it- plus, the weather was completely unbeatable.

Deck work. Got the back patio cleared, sanded down, chemically-cleaned, and hosed off in preparation for a long overdue re-staining. Been putting it off for way too long.

Personal goals for the week. Ride to work four out of five days, complete paleo/whole foods diet with no cheating, stick to the schedule, more tea and less coffee, cut my hair, work on half-lashes.

Cool stuff. Surprise-partyin’ with Greg and Deb, catching up with old friends, grocery restock, loose plans for a White Birch skate session, weekend flatland jams at Berra, sold the Radberry Performer, hard-boiled eggs, Glow.

Room consolidation. Looks like the goobs will soon be sharing a room, with the parts to get their bunkbed completed coming today. Lisa will then have a proper office- which she needs- and we can get the attic a bit less cramped. Now we just have to find the time to do it all.

Friday, July 6, 2018

july sixth

Five for July 6th:

Two-wheelin’. Three out of four on the saddle this week commuting, with several nights of riding flat at the park after the kids went to bed. Noticeable improvement in all areas every day. I can dig it.

Ants. Untold thousands have died by my hand over the last few days. My laundry room and front porch are veritable killing fields.

Pruitt out. Hey, whaddya know? Sometimes cornering corrupt politicians in crowded restaurants and loudly demanding their resignation actually works! So long, fuckface!

Cool stuff. 2-Hip sticker delivery from SCS, paying off the credit card, new (old) tricks in the works, Starbucks at the zoo, short lunch slappy session with Brian, archived issues of American Freestyler.

Weekend action. We’re going to be all over the place. O’Fallon for a party tonight, the farm tomorrow followed by Sublette Park with the neighborhood crew for fireworks, toy show on Sunday. Hoping to get some combination of lawn mowing, skating, riding, and swimming in there somewhere.

Thursday, July 5, 2018

july fifth

Five for July 5th:

Independence Day. Hot and steamy fourth of July, which I suppose is pretty much par for the course this time of year. Got breakfast at Chris’, filled up the backyard pool, snuck in a nap and closed the day out in Weldon Spring eating barbecue and lighting sparklers.

Morning commute. Took a bit of a different route riding in this morning, staying on Ackert greenway all the way down to Vernon. Nice to change it up a bit every once in awhile, however marginal that change might be.

Fireworks. For the first time in a half-decade, we couldn’t watch them happening in Forest Park from our front lawn- though we could still see a bit of the riverfront display from the porch. We’ll be at Sublette on Saturday with the goobs in tow.

Cool stuff. Intermittent fasting resumed, another killer evening flatland session at Berra, Nick Watts – PIM 2, watermelon at work, free case of Spindrift, feels like a Monday but it’s actually Thursday.

Quote of the day. "There needs to be a TV show called Daddy, you need to stop talking.” -Jane

Tuesday, July 3, 2018

july third

Five for July 3rd:

Drive day. Would have loved to have pedaled to work this morning, but with some stuff to haul in, pack up and ship out from an eBay sale, I had no choice but to pass. Bummer, but duty calls. I got to catch up on some podcasts, though, so that’s one plus.

Beat the heat. We picked up a big inflatable swimming pool for the backyard, replacing the old bent piece of plastic we had sitting back there the last few years. I sure hope our air mattress pump still works.

Vintage sticker haul. SoCal skate shop somehow came across a ton of old school stickers and listed them for cheap last night. Got a few classic 2 Hip KOV and Vision decals heading my way.

Cool stuff. Roasted red pepper egg white bites, bike swap for an ’88 Invert, more peppers from the backyard garden, ripping evening session at Berra last night, free bag of whole-bean Sumatra, pair of K. Yairi chopsticks, A Wicked Ride- History of BMX Freestyle in New England.

Tuesday soundtrack. Black Hollies, Queen, Hot Lunch, Goatwhore, Early Man, Frank Black, Golden Void, Obituary, Dead Kennedys, High On Fire, Mastodon, Enforcer, Dead Moon.

Monday, July 2, 2018

july second

Five for July 2nd:

Rock jams. Somehow, with roughly 48 hours’ notice and about one hour of actual practice, I managed to get it together enough to pull off a successful show on Saturday night with the Jag-Wires, opening for Zero Boys at Fubar to a sparse but energetic crowd. Bonus: got a free t-shirt out of the deal.

Morons. They’re already setting off fireworks at 10 pm while my kids are trying to sleep. Better than gunshots, I suppose.

Bike riding. Got in a fun, sweltering flatland session at Berra yesterday followed up with a quick and painless ride in to work this morning. Spot storms all week, but I'm going for 4/5 if at all possible.

Cool stuff. Abbreviated workweek, Monsters of Suburban Highlife/ Meet the Street NYC 1990, water sliding with Jane, hiking Powder Valley with the crew, playing actual acoustic drums, found my S&M koozie, backyard carrot harvest, habanero pistachios.

Explain please. Sometimes I see "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" on "Best Rock Albums" lists, but I never see "Take Five" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet on any "Best Grindcore Albums" lists.
