december twenty-eighth

Five for December 28th:

2018. Overall, a totally amazing year that blazed by in the blink of an eye. If you read this blog you know most of the details anyway. If not, I’ll be posting some ’18 highlights next week.

YAP. Another trip around the sun without a single visit to the best concrete skatepark in the metro area. Need to remedy that soon.

Hoffman Bikes. Kevin Jones Big Daddy flatland frame reissues are happening for May/June ’19 delivery. Pretty awesome, but I’m holding out for a blue Condor.

Cool stuff. Afternoon rollaround, mild weather, card games and art projects with the goobs, iPhone charge port cleanout, The Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe on Netflix, Haro Group 1 retro stems.

Long weekend action, part deux. Pland loosely include a potential Ramp Riders evening session, rock show at Ready Room, running at the Y, taking Jane to the Climatron, procuring dog medication, and drinking a glass of champagne with Lisa and probably falling asleep on the couch by 10 pm on NYE. Seeya in ’19.

december twenty-seventh

Five for December 27th:

Last night. Had to pass on a last-minute RR skate session due to overtiredness of kids and self. Spent the evening in the attic fishing with Dutch Van Der Linde and Hosea Matthews instead. I regret nothing.

Mind over matter. Two things I was, for whatever reason, scared of doing included dropping in on the metal ramp at FBL and bunnyhopping into a feeble stall/grind on the Loop ledge. Of course, as always, once I just committed and did them I realized how totally easy both things were.

Drum dumpster. Another week, another giant waste receptacle out back, half-filled with delaminating bass drums and floor toms. Such a waste.

Cool stuff. Freestyle BMX Tales zines 1 & 2, work snack restock, Super George, Standard Fat 1’s on YouTube, busting out the Holy Smoke t-shirt, good leftovers.

Quote of the day.JURASSIC PARK SEQUEL IDEA: 3 Million A.D. The humans are extinct. The dino-scientists find mosquitoes with human blood. Guess who they clone? Jeff. Fucking. Goldblum. They mix up the mosquito DNA with Goldblum’s. Surprise, assholes- this is now a sequel to The Fly.” -unknown

december twenty-sixth

Five for December 26th:

Xmas 2018. Five separate friend and family get-togethers and a couple of carloads of gifts later, and it’s a wrap (almost, anyway, as there’s one more party Friday that I will miss). The kids had an absolute blast, getting everything they wanted and much more, the weather cooperated, and the food was great.

Holiday loot. H-Street Danny Way first model reissue deck, bag of whole bean Death Wish coffee, bunch of Starbucks gift cards, $100 bill, and some alpaca socks.

Ripping jams. Solo mini-ramp session at Arnold on Friday afternoon, some flatland at the rink on Sunday, Monday morning skate jam with Andy at Webster, hit the pump track for a few laps yesterday afternoon, and rode some street in the Loop this morning before work.

Cool stuff. Cheap 3-way A/V splitter for the attic, 2019 SJA game room tour, modeling clay, playing with RC cars, one-dollar blue sunglasses, January Whole 30, got the Dreamcast set up again.

Snack purge. Brought in a large bag and Tupperware container, each filled to the brim with leftover cookies, brownies, candy, and random baked goods. Had to get that stuff out of the house. If anyone wants any, feel free to come by the office.

december twenty-first

Five for December 21st:

Free lunch. Sugarfire bbq at the workplace party today, followed by some scratch-off lottery tickets, general merriment, and hopefully an early release.

Always something. The igniter on our downstairs furnace is busted and the whole unit is blowing cold. Luckily the repair is cheap (at least compared to the cost of the new furnace we just installed upstairs a week ago). Can we go back to renting?

Quote of the day. "A shutdown falls on the president's lack of leadership. I mean problems start from the top and they have to get solved from the top. A shutdown means the president is weak." -Donald Trump, 2013

Cool stuff. Winter solstice, getting paid, Jane’s swim class achievement certificate, morning roll, Spotify top 100, RDR2 advancement, switched out the pegs on the FST.

Holiday weekend action. First of two four-day weekends in a row coming up. Highlights include Seth and Lindsay’s party, family get-togethers in NoCo, Quincy, and our house, building a giant Thomas the train playset, and generally living the holiday vicariously through our kids. Hoping to get in some running, skating and riding where applicable.

december twentieth

Five for December 20th:

Sugarplum fairy. Jane’s performance in her school’s production of The Nutcracker was nothing short of riveting. Bravo to my sweet, tall, crazy girl.

Office quote of the day. “There you go. Peter Criss could be your mom.” -Pat

Head first. Short and sweet street/flatland jam in the Loop this morning before work. All fun and games til’ you crack a cheap peg doing stalls on a concrete planter.

Cool stuff. Organic oatmeal, afternoon skate cruisin’, Baby Back Ribs jingle recording behind the scenes footage, free cold brew k-cup, watching Future Primitive, Ranchito with Seth and Tom.

Quiet days. True to form, the last week leading up to Christmas break gets increasingly boring as dealers stop ordering and the long weekend looms. At least we get a free lunch out of the deal tomorrow.

Wednesday, December 19, 2018

december nineteenth

Five for December 19th:

Island of Sodor. With a giant playset from Lisa’s dad and stepmom gifted to George yesterday and a Trackmaster Superstation set to materialize under the tree in a few days, our back room is about to become one gigantic pile of plastic Thomas trains and tracks.

Office quote of the day. “That riff makes me want to drive a Camaro through a field full of animals.” -Brian

March 2019. Couple of usually-dismal months to slog through until daylight savings starts, Descendents road trip, my Santa Cruz Special Edition deck shows up, Neil Hamburger at Ready Room, first signs of spring, and potential early bike commutes among other things. Also: ten year anniversary of the Blind Eyes RFT cover.

Cool stuff. Ten dollar Starbucks card (thanks Richie), lunch break slappy hour, party peanuts, love notes from Jane, Scott Hagnas Now and Then flatland video, new Raconteurs single.

Yard work. Got the three piles of leaves in the backyard bagged up ahead of a couple days of rain. Nothing like scooping freezing piles of soggy leaves into lawn bags at 7 am to get the blood flowing.

Tuesday, December 18, 2018

december eighteenth

Five for December 18th:

Fine Arts Drive. The main road through Forest Park connecting Hampton to Skinker mercifully reopened following a several-months closure. My daily commute just got a few minutes less sucky, and George is going to be excited to see all his statue buds again.

New tricks. Improved freak squeaks, more consistent rock to fakies and 50/50’s on coping at length, no-brake peg stall to feeble bunnyhop out on the Loop ledge.

Quote of the day. “Marriage is just your spouse perpetually standing in front of the kitchen drawer or cabinet you need to open.” -@copymama

Cool stuff. City Museum drone flythrough video, Space Brothers Mark Eaton podcast, grande dark roast, Trump Foundation is dissolving, box of xmas chocolates (enjoy, kids), making summer vacation plans.

Tuesday soundtrack. Cheap Trick, Cream, Fu Manchu, Thin Lizzy, Blue Cheers, Rush, MC5, Voivod, Snapcase, Faith No More, Black Crowes, Napalm Death, Mutoid Man, Yardbirds.

Monday, December 17, 2018

december seventeenth

Five for December 17th:

Good timing. The rain that prevailed all of Saturday morning stopped just long enough for the park candy cane hunt to happen without a hitch. A little soggy, but a great turnout and the kids had a blast.

Rolling around. Got in a super fun 60-degree skate sesh at JB with the old man crew yesterday, and on the BMX front, snuck in some flatland at Berra in the evening while the kids played on the playground and ten minutes or so of street riding this morning before heading in to the office.

Eternia revisited. Scored a couple of cheap Man-At-Arms and Mekaneck figures at the Antique Mall with Jane. Some epic battles for Grayskull ensued in the attic shortly thereafter. We still need a Skeletor, though.

Cool stuff. Ultraman’s first demo tape online (temporarily, anyway), impromptu dinner at SoHa, two jars of fresh-ground honey roasted peanut butter, blue dip Powell Bug reissues, haircut, re-raked backyard.

Descendents. Playing Liberty Hall in Lawrence, KS in mid-March. May be a road trip looming. Bring on the (almost) spring.

Friday, December 14, 2018

december fourteenth

Five for December 14th:

Free lunch. La Pizza today at the office. Haven’t had a legit New York-style slice in far too long.

True story. The law of averages states that somewhere out there, an elderly grandmother is delicately wrapping an Avengers: Infinity War bonus edition DVD to give to her soon-to-be disappointed grandson.

Xbox One offline mode. I feel like such a fool for not figuring this out earlier. Gone are the days of enduring two-hour game updates for online/multiplayer functions I will literally never use.

Cool stuff. Bonus check, work coffee restock, vintage Alvarez Electric poster, Voltron: Legendary Defender season 8 on Netflix, kitchen mouse elimination, Haro stamped raglan, grocery delivery.

Weekend action. Should be a pretty nice weekend in the weather department with not a ton of plans. Clifton Park candy cane hunt with the goobs and neighborhood crew, running a few miles, riding flat, wrapping presents, errand-running and skating are all on the table. We'll see how it plays out.

december thirteenth

Five for December 13th:

Quote of the day. “Hillary Clinton, when you go to prison for defrauding America and perjury, your room and board will be free!” -Soon-to-be prison inmate Michael Cohen, circa 2015

Feeling better. Whatever I had yesterday that dropped me like a bad habit has officially made its exit. Light food poisoning? Some sort of 24-hour virus? Whatever it was, I’m glad to be rid of it.

Mr. Show. Winter plans include rewatching the entire series from beginning to end for the first time in probably ten years. Long overdue.

Cool stuff. Sold the XL Haro 2001 jersey, back on the intermittent fasting train, cheap SC Grabke reissues at SCS, morning Mario Kart with George.

Tonight. First Sleepy Kitty show of the year at Ready Room. So long as Lisa makes it home in time for me to go and I don’t feel like shit, I’ll be there.

Wednesday, December 12, 2018

december twelfth

Five for December 12th:

Rain checks. Planned lunch hour curb decimation was postponed yesterday afternoon for some goji bowls at Seoul Taco with my mom and brother before he hopped a plane back to the Pacific Northwest, and planned evening RDR2 was sidelined due to a game update which took the better part of two hours to complete.

Fixed furnace. A not-inconsequential amount of money later, and we have heat back upstairs. Ah, the simple joys of home ownership. On the plus side, our house didn’t burn down.

Under the weather. Woke up this morning feeling like complete crap. Cold and achy, with no appetite. Think I might’ve eaten something that didn’t agree with me. Hopefully whatever it is passes quickly. Powering through at work, for the time being anyway.

Cool stuff. Peg stall to framestands on the Loop ledge, jasmine green tea, office space heater, mesh e-drum delivery, green t-shirt revisited, candy canes for the goobs, Michael Cohen going to prison for three years.

Quote of the day. “It's absurd that an 85-year-old can run for president but a 33-year-old can't.” -Ezra Klein

Tuesday, December 11, 2018

december eleventh

Five for December 11th:

Cheap denim. I can’t do skinny jeans. Tried it for a year or so, but my legs are just too thick for ‘em (chalk it up to riding, I guess). Picked up a $16 pair of 30 x 30’s yesterday at Marshall’s with a nice straight leg and will likely never go back.

Office thievery. Stolen items include gum from Rich, pretzels and cocktail peanuts from Brian, K-cups from multiple sources. The culprit is me. Go ahead and call the cops.

Who needs Foxpaw? Cleaned out the charge port of my 5C with the pointy toothpick end of one of those disposable dental flossers and a flashlight between my teeth to see in there. Good as new.

Cool stuff. Morning street riding, Jane’s first toasted pop tart, 2020 bashguard Sports (here’s hoping), salmon scramble, Loop Trolley already broke down, possible lunch break slappy session.

Tuesday soundtrack. High On Fire, Mastodon, Sumerlands, Cactus, Saxon, Grateful Dead, KISS, Gaunt, Electric Wizard, Melvins, Ramones, Sleep, Blondie.

Monday, December 10, 2018

december tenth

Five for December 10th:

Josh in STL. Got breakfast at Rooster and followed it up with ripping skate sessions at JB and Morganford with Andy and Brian in tow, plus evening pizza at mom’s and a free Gorditas/Thrasher tee.

The furnace. Getting replaced tomorrow. Having heat upstairs again will be a welcome thing after a frigid few nights.

Feel the burn. Got a 4.5-mile or so run in with Lisa on Saturday on the indoor track at the Carondelet Y, which is infinitely nicer than the south city Y track. Would have gone the full five miles if it weren’t early-onset chafing and the need to pee.

Cool stuff. 50 degrees tomorrow, dead mall documentaries on YouTube, free pistachios, highlander grog, first rock to fakies on concrete, new (old) Nick Watts footage, when Tony Hawk gives you an IG “like”.

Chesterfield Mall. Pretty much everything Jane loved- Candy City, the carousel, the train, the bungee trampoline- is gone or shut down. It would break her heart to go there now. I have so many memories rooted there, all the way from childhood to adulthood. It’s pretty hard to watch that place die.

Friday, December 7, 2018

december seventh

Five for December 7th:

Pete Shelley R.I.P. If "Singles Going Steady" isn't high in your top ten desert island albums list, your entire life has been a lie.

Interbike 2019 is cancelled. The future is looking grim for the bike industry tradeshow. Too bad, I was always hoping to make it to one. At least Agenda seems to still be going strong.

Quote of the day. “We are drowning in a devolved, WWF Smackdown-style world, with warring, huckster TV pundits from “The Left” and “The Right” distracting the clueless TV viewership while our vile, venal Mobster-in-Chief and his corrupt minions rob the nation’s coffers in a shamelessly cruel, Grab-'Em-By-The-Pussy Kleptocracy.” -Gerald Casale, DEVO

Cool stuff. Sleeping in, payday, mesh snare for the electronic drum kit, Demolition Days In the Life Of Hucker, episode one, FST Friday, Seoul Taco.

Weekend action. Should be a fun one coming up. Maplewood Christmas tree walk with the family, hanging out/skating with my brother, maybe hitting the final toy show of 2018, dinner at mom’s, playing RDR2 in my cold-ass attic. Potential for swimming/running/riding in there as well.

Thursday, December 6, 2018

december sixth

Five for December 6th:

Last night, part one. Grabbed dinner with Lisa and the Santa hat-clad goobs at Salt & Smoke and followed it up with a walk around Candy Cane Lane and drive through Holly Hills to look at the xmas lights. Good times, until…

Last night, part two. …we were woken at 1:30 am by the attic smoke alarm. Something was wrong with the furnace upstairs and the attic was starting to fill with smoke. The furnace filter was charring and covered in soot. No idea what the hell happened but I turned the breaker off to the furnace and opened all the windows to air it out. Nothing caught fire, thankfully, but it’s a good thing we were home and didn’t go from bad to worse. Update: furnace is totally shot and needs to be replaced. Hooray.

Quote of the day. “Watching people drag Hillary for not acknowledging Trump is a reminder that women who face misogyny are often held to a higher standard in their ability to ‘take the high road’ than actual misogynists. We have to stop counting on women to do things to prop up fragile men.” -Simar Sahluwal

Cool stuff. Ranchito with Tom and Brian, iPhone photo dump, morning roll in the Loop, return of the Kornado, Mike V Sponsored documentary on YouTube, holiday cards came out great and were sixty bucks cheaper than previous years, trick ideas, free Pike Roast k-cups.

Richard Gere fun facts. His middle name is “Tiffany”, and his Wikipedia entry makes no mention if his alleged gerbilling incident. Yes, in case you were wondering, I had no fifth thing for today.

Wednesday, December 5, 2018

december fifth

Five for December 5th:

Happy anniversary. I remember as a kid one year being absolutely convinced for some reason that Christmas was December 5th and was crushed when that day came and I realized I had to wait twenty more days.

Last night. Completely raging session at Ramp Riders. The most people I’ve ever seen there skating at one time by far. The mini was getting completely massacred. I got some good runs in myself, but it was almost better to just sit back and watch the bloodbath ensue.

Bones Brigade. The series eleven lineup got announced yesterday. Pretty uninteresting- all natural finishes, most of which don’t really work super well those graphics, in my opinion. The Ban This Cab looks cool though. Apparently they’re also going up by ten bucks from an already too-high price for a heat transfer board. Come on.

Cool stuff. $7 Misfits shirt at Avalon, Neko Case in KC, lunchtime freestyle session on the FST coming down the pike, Baco 7: Pride on Vimeo, leftover Mexican.

ABC Pet Shop. Jane and George’s bedroom pet store was in full swing last night when I got home, complete with “free”, “cheap”, and “expensive” pet sections.

Tuesday, December 4, 2018

december fourth

Five for December 4th:

Old bones brigade. Another Tuesday evening mini ramp session is going down tonight. Haven’t skated for a solid week, so I’m definitely itching to roll.

Screen time. Sprung on a new TV for the downstairs, which in addition to being cheap and a few inches wider, includes a built-in digital antenna which will allow us to rid ourselves of the unwieldy rectangular nightmare that haunts our living room mantle.

Christmas AM Gold. Hard to believe our Christmas song came out ten freaking years ago. I remember listening to rough mixes of it like it was yesterday. The first thing we ever officially released, and still one of the best songs we ever recorded, in my humble opinion.

Cool stuff. Holiday card from Jane, busting out the Sherpa jacket, Cook Smarts revisited, final contest at The Unit footage, Slappy Hour grip tape packs.

Tuesday soundtrack. Iron Maiden, Poison Idea, Rainbow, Mercyful Fate, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, Audrey Horne, The Marked Men, Flat Duo Jets, Warthog, Bob Log III.

Monday, December 3, 2018

december third

Five for December 3rd:

December highlights. Two four-day weekends in a row, hanging out with my brother in town from Seattle, Seth and Lindsay’s holiday party, giving George his long-awaited and highly anticipated Trackmaster Superstation.

Downstairs bathroom. Lisa finished painting it last night, and it looks great. Gone is the olive-green paint haphazardly slapped on by the previous owners, replaced by a nice grayish blue. Amazing how a fresh coat of light-colored paint can make a small room feel so much bigger. Now on to the upstairs.

Tis the season. We took the kids to meet Santa on Saturday morning (and got a great picture for our xmas card out of the deal), and followed it up with a trip to the Botanical Garden for the garden glow. Candy Cane lane this week sometime?

Cool stuff. Street riding and flatlanding at WG, free vintage Dennis the Menace comics at the Little Library, RDR2 progress, bagels and birthday-partying at the playground, feeding the ducks.

Running. Despite my best intentions, I didn’t get my planned 5K run in over the weekend. That changes tonight. Hitting the indoor track at the Y come hell, high water, or impending lack of motivation.
