february twenty-eighth

Five for February 28th:

February. Going out guns blazing, with ice-covered streets, sub-freezing temperatures and closed schools across the metro area. Good riddance to the worst month of the year. Bring on the spring.

Podcasts. I have a bunch to catch up on, thanks to Apple’s genius decision to not put a normal headphone jack onto later model iPhones. Fucking vultures. Luckily, standing my phone upright inside my cup holder and cranking the volume more or less does the trick till an adapter can be procured.

Freestyle’s saddest tricks. Stuck the sketchiest boomerang ever yesterday during a quick lunch session. It probably doesn’t even count as a boomerang, honestly, but I rolled away from it. One of many tricks I need to get dialed in.

Cool stuff. Post Alley Roast resupply, new game of RDR2 (I missed Arthur), leather-bound notebook, Do It For Dave memorial jam coverage, George playing Superman.

Loop trolley t-shirts. "In perhaps one of the most accurate aspects of the overall design, there are no passengers depicted anywhere. This tracks with anecdotal evidence from employees at Loop businesses, who've confirmed that the trolley is usually empty, as well as with the eyeballs of anyone who has ever seen the thing in the wild."

february twenty-seventh

Five for February 27th:

Nose tingles. Something wicked this way comes in the head-cold department. Hopefully I can stave it off with heavy doses of Cold-Eze and Emergen-C, but I’m bracing for the worst.

Hints of spring. Had a great ride home last night, met up with Lisa and the goobs at the playground for a bit, and walked up to SoHa for dinner. Don’t remember the last time I was able to type a sentence like that.

Locust children. We managed to have two kids that can somehow eat almost nothing at meals, yet consume literally everything in the entire house the rest of the time.

Cool stuff. Afternoon flatland, frozen yogurt, Garageland TV on Instagram, Faith No More Spotify rock block, dollar bags of raw almonds.

Quote of the day. "I am ashamed because I know what Mr. Trump is. He is a racist, he is a con man, and he is a cheat." -Michael Cohen

february twenty-sixth

Five for February 26th:

Day two. Got my second ride to work of the year in this morning. Frigid, but a few extra layers in key spots helped make it tolerable. The ride home should be much nicer. Two for February is about the norm, and I’ll gladly take what I can get.

Mondo video Now that I have a phone with enough memory to save videos (and the capability to upload them to YouTube), I cobbled together a little edit of some of my Instagram flatland clips from 2018 (and a couple from 2019). Not going to blow anyone’s mind, but pretty fun.

Quote of the day. "Today, two unattractive men, who don’t know how to do hair, meet in Vietnam. Both are in their current positions only because their nasty fathers bequeathed them millions of dollars. They will use their limited intellect to pretend to understand issues that could kill us all." -Mrs. Betty Bowers, America’s Best Christian

Cool stuff. Jane’s Lorax outfit for Dr. Seuss day, Repost app, to-go coffee, Mat Hoffman Ride of My Life book coming in the mail, solo dad night with the goobs, Emergen-C restock.

Tuesday soundtrack. Off!, Neurosis, Venom, Speedwolf, Teengenerate, Converge, Melvins, Judas Priest, Quicksand, Sick Of It All, Death, Nightstalker, Band Of Horses, Solace, Cerebral Ballzy, High On Fire.

Monday, February 25, 2019

february twenty-fifth

Five for February 25th:

Earth Surf. Super fun skate session with Andy and Brian out at the Mills. First time skating there in probably eight years or so. Hasn’t gotten any less slippery, but it was way more fun than I remember, and it was cool to ride an indoor park that wasn’t Ramp Riders for a change.

Great outdoors. Spring isn’t quite in the air just yet, but we got some laps in around the neighborhood over the weekend. Hit the playground with a bunch of friends Saturday, and took Henry out for a sunny stroll yesterday complete with a stop at the Little Library.

Pick day. With more snow and misery on cue for the end of the week, tomorrow’s 53 degrees and sunny forecast may make for the second ride-to-work of the year. We’ll see how it pans out. We’re getting there, slowly but surely.

Cool stuff. Getting a friend request from Martin Aparijo on Facebook, Powell Ripper tech deck from my mom, free Starbucks at work, Pro-Mark samples, HIMYM season one revisited, burgers at SoHa with the goobs, watching old Props videos on YouTube.

Tumbleweed. Exploring the old map from the first Red Dead game in RDR2 is super fun, but perhaps nothing is more surreal than experiencing the still-occupied town of Tumbleweed in its death throes. Long after I finished the game’s final mission and epilogue, it just keeps on giving.

february twenty-second

Five for February 22nd:

Diorama. Jane made me a little arts and crafts house complete with a mini-ramp at school yesterday. We’re going to have a session on it with some toyboarders tonight.

Quote of the day. “It’s like, how do you have a computer that runs both Windows 95 and Twitter at the same time?” -Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, shutting down weak meme-makers

Sleeping in. That’s two weeks in a row now where I’ve had one solitary day of sleeping ‘til late, late hour of 7 am. I could get used to this.

Cool stuff. D.R.I. at Fubar in September, instacart delivery, another good morning roll, finished the Brian Foster documentary, on the beach in about a month.

Weekend action. Taking the car in for some overdue repairs, Herm in town, running a few errands, hanging out with the goobs, skating and riding, trying not to get rained on.

Thursday, February 21, 2019

february twenty-first

Five for February 21st:

New terrain. The final funding for the new skatepark in Maplewood was approved yesterday and the construction should begin soon. It’ll be awesome to have a park that close to the house. Hopefully it’s cool.

Bikeage. Got in a sunset flatland session last night at the new lot and some street riding this morning down in the Loop. Highlights include scuffing a funky chicken further than ever before and rolling away from my first old-school hop-up to frame whip on the planter.

On the upswing. Lisa woke up this morning feeling almost human for the first time in probably two weeks. Hoping for the best, but I’m pretty much just counting down the minutes till I get whatever she had.

Cool stuff. Work snack restock, Eben’s chrome bash Master build, watching roadrunner cartoons with the goobs, KISS minimates, George’s Willie Nelson shirt.

Power nap. I dozed off the couch last night around 9:30, slept like a complete rock for maybe 45 minutes, went upstairs, and naturally couldn’t get back to sleep til probably 2 am.

Wednesday, February 20, 2019

february twentieth

Five for February 20th:

Spot check. Thanks to the help of Dave Voelker, I found the location (on Google Earth) of the first 2-Hip Meet the Street contest in Santee yesterday, sandwiched between the back of what is now a Petco and a self-storage facility. Still there and waiting for a 31-year anniversary jam.

Radio Days. Lisa had an interview on the air this morning with Jennifer Blome, which of course I missed, being at work. Hopefully it finds its way online somewhere.

Office Space. Happy 20th birthday to my (actual) favorite movie of all time. The very top of my desert island list. I could watch it daily.

Cool stuff. S&M Live Free or Die full video, less than a month til’ DST starts, fruit salad, Vimeo app, watching Jane learn to read and write, Space Brothers Steve Crandall podcast, afternoon record shopping.

L.A. Noire. Finally got around to firing it up for the first time last night. Fun game so far, and impressive graphics for being eight years old. Of course, everything pales next to RDR2, but I think this will be a good one to close out winter.

Tuesday, February 19, 2019

february nineteenth

Five for February 19th:

True story. It's morning in America, and triggered white men everywhere are getting ready for a long day of clicking the "haha" emoji on any Facebook post that mentions Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Bernie 2020. Looks like it's happening. Shaping up to be an interesting run for the office.

Henry. He’s at the groomer today getting a much-needed trim down. Between this and the six months’ worth of flea and heartworm medicine I got for him over the weekend, we’ve dropped some serious coin on this dog recently. Worth it, of course.

Cool stuff. iPhone 7 voicemail transcription, passion fruit La Croix, morning roll, tall Pike Place roast, Stompin’ The States on YouTube, Tessemae’s buffalo sauce, BF-it on Vimeo.

Tuesday soundtrack. Warbringer, Clutch, YOB, Carnivore, Early Man, Black Sabbath, Descendents, Iron Reagan, D.R.I., Fu Manchu, Radio Moscow.

Monday, February 18, 2019

february eighteenth

Five for February 18th:

That’s more like it. Urban Outfitters’ out-of-nowhere line of throwback GT, Dyno, Schwinn and Mongoose BMX shirts, originally priced at an absurd $35-$45, are now on clearance for nine bucks.

RDR2. Completed the main storyline last night, but luckily there’s still a ton of stuff left to do in the game, up to and including exploring the entire state of New Austin. Hands-down the best video game in the history of video games.

Lisa. Been down for the count with some sort of virus that isn’t the flu, but is at least the next worst thing. She’s been soldiering through it better than I would be. Hopefully she’ll be out of the woods soon.

Cool stuff. Morning Props videos, breakfast at Chris’ with the crew, Janey journaling, drumless KISS tracks, fresh juice, backyard jams on the ’88 Invert, cheap Atari and Master System games at Half Price Books, new chess set.

Quote of the day. “Ideally, the president of the United States, the head of a multi-generational crime family, a compromised Russian asset and the stupidest fucking moron on the planet should not all be the same person and that right there, friends, is the realest national emergency ever.” -Jeff Tiedrich

Friday, February 15, 2019

february fifteenth

Five for February 15th:

World Industries. Upcoming summer reissues include the 1990-91 Rocco Pooh Bear, Ed Templeton Veggie Burger, and both the Randy Colvin Censorship and Blacklight decks. All hand-printed and in limited numbers (of course).

Fresh squeezed. Started the day off with some strawberry, orange, organic carrot and lime juice via the new juicer. It was amazing, and will make for a good way to get rid of excess farm share vegetables this spring and summer.

RIP Ride BMX. The end of an era. Not even the online-only format the mag had taken could survive the recent TransWorld acquisition by AMI, who apparently locked the office doors and shut the remaining staff out of their website and Instagram. What a bummer. Glad I have an old stack of printed goodness to flip through.

Cool stuff. Cadbury cream eggs for the goobs, pay day, good ride home last night, mid-school video discussions, one day of sunshine, dinner on the back porch.

Weekend action. Aside from running some errands I’ve been putting off forever, the weekend is wide open. The usual assortment of running, skating, and riding may or may not go down depending on weather and motivation. Maybe selling a bike in there somewhere.

Thursday, February 14, 2019

february fourteenth

Five for February 14th:

Valentine overload. The kids have their various holographic, clip-on, scratch off V-day cards prepped for delivery to schoolmates, and are ready to receive their respective hauls. This morning was spent watching Valentine’s Day cartoons on YouTube and eating candy hearts. Best times.

Riding in. First bike commute of 2019 went down today. February rides are a rarity and I just take them where I can get them, but it felt awesome to get back on the saddle. Any lingering chill was easily handled by full-fingered cloves, a balaclava and thermal long underpants.

Frozen 2. I guess I know what Jane and I will be doing on November 22nd.

Cool stuff. Whole 30 microwave bowls, Mudhoney at Off Broadway in October, tangerine & wild strawberry Pelegrino water, Team Haro tees and hoodies coming in 2020 (hopefully), Clifton Park sunset.

Office quotes of the day. Q: “Are you talking about Asia, the band?” A: “No, I’m talking about Aja, the Steely Dan record”. –Katie and Seth

Wednesday, February 13, 2019

february thirteenth

Five for February 13th:

GTA III. The joys of a newer-generation smartphone: actually being able to download game apps that work. Revisiting the OG Liberty City on my glorified adult Gameboy during bathroom breaks is good stuff, with surprisingly functional controls given the limitations of a touch screen. Vice City and San Andreas to come.

To-do list. Everything I had on it yesterday actually got done. Dog grooming appointment made, car repairs scheduled, and updated insurance cards obtained.

Freestyle. It was light out til’ 6 pm last night, and with the temperatures verging on mild and the goobs at swim lessons, I got to ride some flatland at the lot for a bit before the wind and encroaching dark got the better of me. Also snagged a bit of street riding this morning down in the Loop.

Cool stuff. Free Death Ray Vision and Interpol posters, honey lemon ginseng tea, one-dollar Larabars, Almost Cheese & Crackers on YouTube, Bobby Altiser Standard bike check, nearing slappy season.

Tonight. Late sunshine and a 50+ degree high will hopefully yield a post-work trip to the playground with the kids before heading home for Dogtown pizza, origami art and some manner of animated princess movie.

Tuesday, February 12, 2019

february twelfth

Five for February 12th:

Grand Junction. Some guy has a 2006 Haro Sport listed on FB Marketplace for twenty bucks. Someone please go get it so I can sleep again.

Eyes on the prize. The seemingly endless slog through February is almost halfway over. Less than a month till the switch to daylight savings and the start of spring training. Can’t wait.

Always something. The driver’s side door of the Rogue is busted, and can only be opened from the inside. I think the last cold/ice snap might have done it in, somehow. God forbid we go a whole month without some sort of house or car repair to pay for.

Cool stuff. Pentagram at Fubar in March, Ranchito coffee, morning trains with George, Resident Evil 2 remake footage, valentine creation from Jane, 50 degrees tomorrow.

Tuesday soundtrack. Spirit Caravan, Black Pyramid, Mutoid Man, Goatsnake, Exodus, Mothership, Zero Boys, Guitar Wolf, Aerosmith, Fugazi, Voivod.

Monday, February 11, 2019

february eleventh

Five for February 11th:

Projects completed. Finally got the kitchen walls painted a nice blue/gray (gone is the nasty mish-mash yellow with random nail holes and spackle patches), and also deep-cleaned behind the fridge and the stove for the first time in the seven years we’ve lived there.

Flatland. Had a productive ride on Saturday afternoon during the hour or so of dry pavement and sunshine we had this weekend. Made some good progress on fire hydrants and longer side-glides.

Tooth fairy. Jane got another visit from her favorite “pink and green fairy with golden shoes” last night after somehow knocking an already-wiggly baby tooth even looser while playing with George and just yanking it out the rest of the way.

Cool stuff. New Haro Fusion pegs, fresh-ground almond butter, bashguard Master production line videos, Jason Rothmeyer Skatehoarders episode, OG Vision banner, siete tortillas, SB Fair Trade on autobrew.

Whole 30, week two. All the intermittent fasting in the world can’t compare to just eating well. I don’t ever feel better than I do when I’m doing Whole 30. That’s just a fact.

Friday, February 8, 2019

february eighth

Five for February 8th:

Cleaning house. Listed the General Hustler Pro on Craigslist yesterday on a whim. Don’t necessarily want to get rid of it, to be honest, but it’s just taking up space at this point. I will gladly hang on to it if no one bites for the listed price.

Fish Fry season. Just around the corner. Excited for a post-Whole 30 plate of fried fish and mac n’ cheese.

Trumpsters getting screwed on tax returns. Jeez, it's almost like trusting and voting for a career conman and known tax fraud has turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy or something.

Cool stuff. Jag-Wires Mascara cassette, cashew cookie Larabar, new John B. mini ramp footage, Powell Ripper tech deck, French press coffee.

Weekend action. Tonight I’ll be attending a memorial service in Illinois with a bunch of friends, coworkers, and the bass player for Danzig. Hopefully getting some riding or skating in tomorrow, maybe taking the kids to the carousel, running a 5K, and trying not to freeze for the rest of the weekend.

Thursday, February 7, 2019

february seventh

Five for February 7th:

Rock show. Free Jag-Wires/Thee Fine Lines double header at Tap Room should be a pretty OK way to spend a wet and frigid Thursday night.

RIP TWS? The writing appears to be on the wall for the imminent death of yet another skate mag, this time the iconic Transworld. Even though I wasn’t a fan of the current format in the slightest and let my subscription lapse long ago, still a bummer to see another one bite the dust.

Santa Cruz fall reissues. Announced yesterday: blue dip Tom Knox firepit, white dip Jeff Kendall graffiti, and an orange fade Roskopp 2, all coming down the pike. Too bad I’m not buying skateboards this year, cause that Knox is killer.

Cool stuff. Bunch of ’89 Canada 2-Hip KOV photos on FB, fruit cup, Seattle’s Best Portside Blend for the office, Whole 30 starts today, updated vintage kneesaver bars in stock at Cheap Goods,

Poison idea. Outdoor mouse poison bait stations seem to really be doing the trick this year. Knock on wood. Haven’t seen a single one since I put them out a few weeks ago.

Wednesday, February 6, 2019

february sixth

Five for February 6th:

New phone. Upgraded to a refurbed iPhone 7 from my old 5C, which is an upgrade that was long overdue. Having apps that work, a battery that doesn’t drain in ten minutes, and- with an increase in storage from 5G to 128G- the ability to take photos and videos without constantly running out of space is a huge relief.

Quote of the day. “I saw this as a psychotically incoherent speech with cookies and dog poop.” –Van Jones on the State of the Union

Foxpaw. Never had a bad experience there. Super helpful staff, fast turnaround, relaxed vibe, and (comparatively) affordable. If you dread the Apple store as I do, I can’t recommend them enough.

Cool stuff. Ranchito with the lunch crew, free tubes of eucalyptus lip balm, Print Matters: an exclusive extract from Ride, got my skate key back, wasabi almonds, Haro Boys stickers.

Whole 30. Starting another one back up in the next week or so, and hoping to keep it going until we head out to Florida in March. I’m ready for it.

Tuesday, February 5, 2019

february fifth

Five for February 5th:

Spoiler alert. This whole “Arthur Morgan getting tuberculosis” thing is actually bumming me out IRL.

Street session. Got the FST out for a few hits on the Loop ledge before work. The usual assortment of trickery went down. Getting way more comfortable at low-speed feeble grinds.

Little professor. Before getting out of bed this morning, Jane told me all about Queen Nefertiti and we practiced drawing aerial views of pyramids in her sketchbook.

Cool stuff. 2-Hip Snake Oil shirt, good leftovers, fresh Starbucks card, emailing with Ron Wilkerson, energy balls, 4.5 weeks til’ DST starts up.

Tuesday soundtrack. Unida, American Sharks, Acid Witch, Kyuss, Sepultura, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Dead Now, Ordos, Earthless, Thin Lizzy, ASG, Beastwars.

Monday, February 4, 2019

february fourth

Five for February 4th:

Taste of spring. Sunshine and 60-degree temperatures made for an unreal weekend. I know we’re not out of the woods yet by any means, but it reminded me of what we have to look forward to in relatively short order.

Quote of the day. "I believe now and then that I am not either of the people in this photo.” -Virginia Governor Ralph Northam shortly after saying "I am deeply sorry for the decision I made to appear as I did in this photo.”

Gnarlage. Rode flatland at Berra Park for literally four hours on Saturday while the kids played (and rode bikes with me), and got a skate session with Andy and Brian in at JB on Sunday followed by another flatland jam where I stuck a new trick out of the blue. It’s a good kind of sore.

Cool stuff. Impromptu Friday date night with Lisa, Backyard barbecue, freshly-bathed dog, new haircuts for the goobs, painting the kitchen this week, set up the Special Edition, leftover kebabs, refurb iPhone (hopefully) soon.

Halftime show. It’s all I’m hearing about today. Of course it was terrible, people. What the hell did you expect? If you ask me, next year they should just roll a portable stage with a few hay bales into the middle of the field and let Foghat play.

Friday, February 1, 2019

february first

Five for February 1st:

February. The last full month of winter is upon us, and starting off on the right foot. Blooming trees, spring training, and riding season are just around the corner.

Quote of the day. “75 IQ points spread across the whole clan.” -Andy Richter on Trump and offspring

Guarma. I can’t believe the entire massive Caribbean island of Guarma in RDR2 exists solely for a small handful of relatively short missions. Had I known it was going to be over so fast, I would’ve spent way more time exploring.

Cool stuff. Gettin’ paid, Jane’s 100th day of school, to-go coffee, organic Froot Loops, old cymbals at the office.

Weekend action. Highs around 60 degrees both days this weekend after the coldest week in recorded history? I’ll take it. Plans include being outside as much as possible, skating, flatland riding at the Lot, taking the goobs to the park, and potentially checking out the RV show downtown.
