april thirtieth

Five for April 30th:

Silly me. The filling I just had put back in two weeks ago popped out yesterday. And here I was thinking maybe it’d be another few years before I had to have another Novocain shot to my gums.

April showers. Not just a euphemism this year. I feel like it rained every other day this month- though it has, indeed, brought the May flowers.

Blues. Another win for the ‘note in a see-saw game against the Stars last night. 2-1 in the series. Who would’ve thought?

Cool stuff. Free MC5 and Sub Pop stickers, texting with Mike Daily, backyard Frisbee, Grande Sumatra, morning brick manuals on the vato rat, bento box, Board Crazy on YouTube, DIY BMX Worlds 2019 footage.

Tuesday soundtrack. Felt, Masters Of Reality, The Replacements, Jucifer, Jawbreaker, The Black Dahlia Miurder, Pelican, The Randoms, Fuzz, Camarosmith, Haunt, SubRosa, Propagandhi, Sebadoh, In Flames.

april twenty-ninth

Five for April 29th:

East side. Nice drive up the river road yesterday with Lisa and the goobs for a plant sale at Three Rivers in Elsah and a stop at the Loading Dock to check out the flea market, get some lunch and do some hula-hooping.

Day fourteen. Got a great ride to work in today, and it should be a nice mid-seventies ride home following some morning sprinkles. This whole week is looking sketchy with rain in the forecast for basically every day, so bike commutes are going to be played by ear.

Weekend progression. Stationary cyclone-swivel to hop-over back wheel pogo with an x-up, scuffed my longest funky chicken ever, dialing in rollback sliders and reverse steamrollers.

Cool stuff. Two vintage neoprene Body Glove bracelets, Jane’s soccer team won both games in their cold, rainy Saturday double-header, attic Mariokart 64, farm-fresh eggs, party at the playground.

Landscaping. The gardens are blowing up with veggies and spices, the bushes are trimmed back, flower beds are planted, mulch is down, lawn is mowed, trees are filling in, and the weeds are pulled.

april twenty-sixth

Five for April 26th:

Barely joking. My kingdom for the entire run of the Baco and Dorkin’ videos to find their way to YouTube. Added bonus for whoever uploads Nonstop to San Francisco.

Sticker shock. Discovered last night that getting my wife and kids on my insurance plan would literally cost- per month- what I pay for just myself for an entire year. So much for that idea.

Blues hockey. Game one vs. the Stars is a winner. Hoping I can figure out a way to actually watch a few games in this series vs. roll over in the morning and watch the highlight reel on my phone.

Cool stuff. Payday, (another) backyard garden radish haul, morning MOTU, raw nut restock, Bustelo bricks, black Hammer gyro cover.

Weekend action. Jag-Wires at Sinkhole, some needed lawn-work after a week of rain and sun, riding flatland at the lot, soccer games, Grafton flea market with the crew, potential outdoor skate session.

Thursday, April 25, 2019

april twenty-fifth

Five for April 25th:

No ride. Apparently whatever I was looking at yesterday that said today would be dry was wholly incorrect, as it’s pretty much going to rain all day. A midday commitment tomorrow popped up as well, holding this week to two bike commutes. Bummer indeed, but that’s just how it goes sometimes.

Heavy company. Other charter members of the Moon Babes of Bicycle City Bike Club include Mat Hoffman, Maurice Meyer, Poor Boy Steev, Dom Phipps, Mike Sarris, Bryan Tunney, and of course Mike Daily. Whew.

STL. Cardinals sweep the Brewers and are in first place in the NL Central, Blues face off against the Stars tonight in game one of round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Cool stuff. Sad But True shirt, prosciutto and eggs, It’s Always Sunny on Hulu, Black Ops pegs, bugs on a log, Look Back Library article, novelty removable thumb, 1992 BS Series pro flat footage.

Space travel. This morning Jane and I visited the cotton candy planet, the horse planet, and the rainbow planet before landing back on Earth. Always an adventure.

Wednesday, April 24, 2019

april twenty-fourth

Five for April 24th:

Ramp jams. Two weeks in a row that Andy and I have had the entire park to ourselves on a random weeknight. Probably skated better last night than I ever have in my entire life, which isn’t saying much, but it’s cool to lay down a solid few runs of decent lip-trickery.

Quote of the day. “But if we forgive student loan debt and let everyone go to college for free, how will we convince poor kids to join the military?” -Justina Ireland

Vehicular relief. We’ve gone from having two cars with innumerable issues to two cars with no issues in the span of a week and some change.

Cool stuff. Front pegs for the FST, almond butter from Fresh Thyme, shaved, rocket adventure plans with Jane, Rector reek, tomorrow and Friday look rideable, FISE footage, Large Ray's Instagram.

Grosso’s Love Notes. Short and sweet 2:45 tribute to Natas Kaupas is online. JG is back with a vengeance. Go watch it.

Tuesday, April 23, 2019

april twenty-third

Five for April 23rd:

Day thirteen. Chillier ride than usual this morning and potentially a little wet on the way home tonight. Still glad I pedaled in, and being that the van is still in the shop, I didn’t have much choice in the matter.

Easter leftovers. The upside? Plenty of hard-boiled eggs in the fridge. The downside? Washing all the glitter off your hands after you get done peeling them.

Quote of the day. “If Jesus showed up and ran for president in 2020 on the platform that human empathy and compassion is more important than personal wealth, do you think Trump supporters would call him a libtard to his face or just behind his back?” -Wendy Schultz

Cool stuff. Haro Lisbon trip video drops today, Thrasher Phelps cover, iPhone photo dump, Pee-wee’s Playhouse with the goobs, garden radish haul.

Tuesday soundtrack. Cathedral, Orange Goblin, Electric Wizard, Dead Boys, The Cult, L7, Voivod, Angel Witch, Superchunk, Dillinger Four, Jane’s Addiction, The Strike, The Gun Club, Black Mountain, Gluecifer, Tommy Guerrero.

Monday, April 22, 2019

april twenty-second

Five for April 22nd:

Day twelve. Picture-perfect ride in this morning to kick the week off. Springs don’t get much better than this one has been.

Easter weekend. The kids were all in over the last couple of days. Egg hunt at the park, egg hunt in the backyard, egg hunt at grandma’s, egg dyeing, two baskets of toys and candy, scavenger hunts, bunny ears, the works. Best times with my favorite people.

Seven years’ good luck. While Lisa and I started dating almost eleven years ago, we hit the seven-year matrimonial mark yesterday. Don’t know how I got so lucky. Here’s to many more.

Cool stuff. Blues advance to the second round of the playoffs, van AC repair is covered, stuck a half-boomerang to fire hydrant from the back pegs at the lot, HBO Now, front beds mulched, bushes trimmed.

Whole 30. Starting a new one today with Lisa. Planning on keeping it rolling long past the thirty-day mark, with the exception of a trip to Columbia to hit Booches and the Thai trailer at Cooper’s Landing next month.

Friday, April 19, 2019

april nineteenth

Five for April 19th:

Let’s go Blues. Unreal game five versus the Jets last night. So many weird and patently insane things had to happen for that victory to occur, but occur it did. Time to close this series out.

Grosso’s Loveletters to Skateboarding. Back after a far-too-long hiatus with a twenty-minute episode on the Venice Beach scene. Worth a watch, as they all are.

Morning roll. Spun my best fire hydrant ever this morning on the ’87 FST, assisted no doubt by that bike’s combination of kneesaver bars and insanely tight turning radius. Lunch sesh forthcoming.

Cool stuff. Fresh Whole 30 starting soon, Vicks-infused Puffs, Lookback Library documentary, kid ukulele dance concert in the living room, USB charge cable for my old-ass iPod.

Weekend action. Beautiful one coming up. Egg hunt in Clifton Park with the goobs, getting the AC fixed in the van, lawn work, dinner at Lisa’s mom’s, freestylin’, hitting the playground.

Thursday, April 18, 2019

april eighteenth

Five for April 18th:

Ramp Riders. Last-minute skate session with Andy last night was awesome (and hot). Started out rusty but got my sea legs pretty quick. We had the whole place to ourselves, which is rare. Mega fun.

I’m not worthy. I did a little Q&A with Mike Daily of Aggro Rag Freestyle Mag/Plywood Hoods fame. Read it here. He’s got a new book coming out that promises to be awesome. Read that too.

Flair is for closers. Jane sold more Girl Scout cookies than anyone in her troop, earning herself four new patches for her vest. That’s my girl.

Cool stuff. Backyard lettuce haul, Gerry Smith ’88 AFA Masters footage, pedaling through insane headwind, strawberry sparkling water, Popular Songs Getting Larsed.

Quote of the day. “So the Mueller report says Donald Trump attempted to obstruct justice on countless occasions we know about, but he failed because people wouldn’t help him, and they’ve all subsequently been fired.” -Sandra Newman

Wednesday, April 17, 2019

april seventeenth

Five for April 17th:

Rolling in style. Said goodbye to the Nissan Rogue yesterday with the purchase of a dialed 2017 Corolla. Buying a Toyota from an actual Toyota dealership that is literally two minutes from our house and not somewhere out in South County may be the smartest thing we ever did.

Day eleven. Got a rare Wednesday ride to work as Lisa’s mom couldn’t watch George today. I’ll take it. Tomorrow is looking like a washout, but I’m shooting for a four day, 52-mile ride week.

Good riddance to: Persistent acceleration problems, weird rattle at certain speeds, check engine light, loose flap on the undercarriage, broken door handle, busted wiper-fluid blaster, taillight out, dead keychain clicker, loud buzz from back door whenever the doors locked, only having one key, aftermarket floor mats, and a cracked bumper. I’m probably leaving something out.

Cool stuff. Fully cleaned out the van, replaced the rage uke, two-dollar Tuesday at SoHa, brief but fun flatland session, backyard veggie garden in major bloom, sore legs, morning trains with George, the ability to update apps and operating systems, finally watched the Bernie Sanders town hall.

Ranchito. T-minus 45 minutes till pollo Yucatan. The microwave whole 30 bowl will wait til’ tomorrow.

Tuesday, April 16, 2019

april sixteenth

Five for April 16th:

Day ten. Another pretty much picture-perfect morning ride in the weather department. The trip home today should be the hottest one yet- around 80. Hard to believe it was 34 and sleeting two days ago.

Inaugural mow. Finally got the lawn cut and the weeds whacked for the first time this year, which was pretty overdue, at least in most spots. The floodgates are officially open.

Mary Poppins Returns. It’s all the kids want to watch lately, which is fine with me. I’ll take that over Barbie: Life in the Dream House any day.

Cool stuff. Free copy of Drumhead magazine, Max Geronzi’s Back to the 80’s part, Blues playoff game four tonight, raw almonds, evening at the playground, cheap Steve Saiz totems, candy heart grapes.

Tuesday soundtrack. Corrosion of Conformity, S.O.D., Plasmatics, Bad Religion, Wire, Insect Warfare, The Dickies, Carbonas, Slayer, Zounds, Crass, Dead Milkmen, Richard Hell.

Monday, April 15, 2019

april fifteenth

Five for April 15th:

Day nine. Back to the full-on frigid weather bundle-up for the ride in this morning following a weekend cold snap, but sunny and high 60’s for the commute home.

Zapped. The most cacophonous, prolonged wind and rain storm I’ve ever witnessed went down Saturday night, knocking the power out for about eleven hours and causing damage all over town. Our shed doors got ripped off and thrown across the yard, but somehow the tarp covering the garden bed stayed in place. Go figure.

Soccer. The YMCA Green Dragons won 3-2, with Jane making four great saves in goal. Offensively, she’s got some work to do, but she’s definitely not afraid to get down and dirty on defense. Proud of my little bruiser.

Cool stuff. Block risers on the Vato Rat, killer riding session at the lot, free coffee at work, GTA IV revisited, freshly-laundered sheets, One Night Stand with Corey Bradley, Lisa's nachos.

Quote of the day. “Kids in high school: ‘I just don’t understand why I have to take biology and basic science classes, it’s not like I’m ever going to use that information in my life.’ Kids as adults: ‘Vaccines cause autism and the earth is flat.” -Unknown

Friday, April 12, 2019

april twelfth

Five for April 12th:

Day eight. Pretty brisk bicycle commute to work this morning, but the sunlight and thermos of to-go coffee helped temper the chill in the air. Glad I was able to get a couple in this week.

Rollback sliders. A trick I’ve been able to get into for years, but never actually rolled out of- until last night. Sketchy as they come, but it's cool to check another one off the list.

Bento boxes. Brought one every day this week for lunch, each consisting of some combination of salad, tuna, olives, carrots, snap peas, hummus, fruit, and raw nuts. Digging it.

Cool stuff. Steven Hamilton The Yin & the Yang video, Larabar restock, ultra-soft Kleenex, New Deal reissues, getting paid, Iron Maiden playing Rock in Rio 2019.

Weekend action. Mowing the lawn, Jane and George soccer games, potential kid birthday party at Brian’s, car shopping, riding flatland and/or skate session, maybe hitting up some Record Store Day events.

Thursday, April 11, 2019

april eleventh

Five for April 11th:

Fighting for change. Lisa is in Jefferson City this morning, speaking in support of Missouri becoming the final state of the union needed to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment into the US constitution. What are you doing?

One down, fifteen to go. The Blues beat Winnipeg last night in game one of the playoffs. Stanley Cup, here we come.

Slappy hour, v.2. Much better curb jam yesterday afternoon with Brian. Comparatively, anyway. We still pretty much completely sucked.

Cool stuff. Dandelion from Jane, lunch bento boxes, morning backyard rollback sliders, George’s Percy collection, to-go coffee, Cardinals win, FroYo.

Quote of the day. "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex." -Text of proposed ERA

Wednesday, April 10, 2019

april tenth

Five for April 10th:

Media personality. Lisa has been all over the news lately, most recently yesterday on Fox 2 discussing the Equal Rights Amendment. What can I say? She’s an amazing person.

Always room for one more. I needed another Iron Maiden shirt like I needed another hole in my head, but seven bucks for a vintage-ish Powerslave tee at Avalon was too good to pass up.

Nine Club. Finally finished the epic, five-hour Mike V podcast. Truth be told, it was so good and interesting I probably could have listened to five more. Best one yet by far.

Cool stuff. Organic peanut butter cups, Chase Gouin Highway to Hell part on YouTube, office snack resupply, two-dollar Tuesday at SoHa, washed my work hoodie.

Quote of the day. “New Zealand’s Parliament just voted 119-1 to ban all assault rifles. But who needs bravery and legislation when we’ve got thoughts and prayers? Seeya at the next massacre!” -Jesse Duquette

Tuesday, April 9, 2019

april ninth

Five for April 9th:

Day seven. Morning rides simply don’t come any better than what today offered up. Perfect sunshine, clear skies, no humidity, light breeze, minimal traffic, and a world very quickly coming back to life after a brutal winter. There’s nothing better.

Slappy hour. Fun but rusty lunch session at the Schnucks curbs with Brian yesterday. Definitely out of shape in the slappy department, and it didn’t help I was skating an 8” popsicle board with tiny trucks.

Lawn care. Probably going to have to give the yard its first mow of the season this weekend, or at least parts of it. It’s amazing how quickly everything turned green. The weeds also wasted no time in returning.

Cool stuff. Free box of boutique chocolates, origami with Jane, old Elephant Brand board videos on Vimeo, evening at the playground, killer sunrise, filling is fixed.

Tuesday soundtrack. Sleep, Negative Approach, Husker Du, Nuclear Assault, Spaceslug, Warning, Armored Saint, Mammoth Grinder, Redd Kross, Groovie Ghoulies, Fu Manchu.

Monday, April 8, 2019

april eighth

Five for April 8th:

Weekend in motion. Lisa ran a half-marathon, both kids had their first soccer games of the season, I got in some flatland rides and a backyard skate session, and had plenty of walks around the neighborhood.

Ted Drewes. Debut trip for the year was a success. The lemon crumb concrete may become my new go-to.

First-world problems. Woke up this morning completely ready to ride in on this beautiful, 70-degree day- until I remembered I had a dentist appointment after work to get a filling replaced. Now I get to drive home in rush hour traffic at 5:30 with a numb mouth in a minivan with no AC.

Cool stuff. Got the lawnmower running, Ray Barbee ragdoll t-shirt, rolled my longest hang five ever, grilling kebabs on the back patio, attic jazz jam with Jane, BK Air Jordan interview article, backyard garden in bloom.

Quote of the day. “It is deeply alarming that the Trump administration official who put children in cages is reportedly resigning because she is not extreme enough for the White House’s liking.” -Nancy Pelosi

Friday, April 5, 2019

april fifth

Five for April 5th:

Day six. 2/4 this week ain’t bad. Good ride in today- the first one of the year in shorts. Amazing what a difference that makes. Wet roads, but light traffic and mild temperatures balanced it out. Inching toward regularity, slowly but surely.

This old house. Not sure if it’s the same bird every year, but the annual spring nest construction on the little ledge over our front door has begun right on schedule, to the delight of Jane and George.

Cardinals home opener. Wisely postponed to today after a soggy and miserable day yesterday. Would be cool to go to a game or two this season.

Cool stuff. Backyard grass is getting green, blueberry RX bar, Mike V Nine Club podcast, Dorkin’ 1 in the attic, morning Legos, bashguard Master builds, $29 Roskopp Face decks gripped with rails at Kingpin.

Weekend action. Doing some stuff around the house, kid soccer, hopefully getting in some skating and/or riding, Lisa is running a half marathon, taking the goobs to the playground, fixing some things at my mom’s house, dropping CDs at Euclid for RSD.

Thursday, April 4, 2019

april fourth

Five for April 4th:

Last night. Fun time with goobs and neighbors at the playground. The park is really starting to bloom, with trees flowering and plants sprouting everywhere. I love this time of year.

Technical difficulties. Attempt at a lunch break ride-around yesterday was thwarted by a rubbing back wheel and dangerously loose bars on the GT. Got it all tightened up and dialed in when I got home, and threw on a fresh pair of ODI grips for good measure.

Morning meeting. Finally, one that wasn’t a total bummer or complete waste of time. Wish that was the case more often.

Cool stuff. Few quick bike tricks before the rain on the way in, Mr. Goodbar from Jane, Vans Shimmer video dropping in July, Nolder sticker on the Ban This Caballero, thrift store toy kickflip challenge.

Office quote of the day. "I mean, I was on the gold coast of Chicago, I didn’t expect to get MAGA-edgelorded out of breakfast." -Seth

Wednesday, April 3, 2019

april third

Five for April 3rd:

Man’s laziest friend. Most dogs, upon seeing their families enter the house after being away for a week, would lose their minds with joy. Ours could barely be bothered to open both eyes to acknowledge us from the chair he was sleeping on.

Lofty goals. Are decades, half-lashes, forward steamrollers and hang fives by the end of summer actually attainable? Elbow glides? Cyclone exit variations? Only one way to find out.

Tuesday night’s alright. Had a great ride home in the spring sunshine, rode flat for an hour at the lot while the kids were at soccer practice, and walked up to SoHa to meet the crew for some dinner. Out like a light by 9:30.

Cool stuff. Supersuckers at Fubar in July, vacation photo dump, Pollo Yucatan with extra veggies, S&M Skeletons and Muscles road trip video, work snack restock, Infection 2 on YouTube, building a Lego space station with George.

Greatest country on Earth. So has the President of the United States of America's new claim that wind causes cancer officially replaced the bread-sliced bagel as the nation's number one trending topic? Just want to make sure I'm keeping up.

Tuesday, April 2, 2019

april second

Five for March April 2nd:

Florida. Six days of sunshine, crashing waves, great food, a drum circle, lizard hunting, swimming, sunsets and sand castles blasted by in the blink of an eye, but a great time was had by all. Thanks again to Roger for putting us up and putting up with us. Photographic evidence on Instagram.

Mail call. 2-Hip Snake Oil t-shirt from Ron Wilkerson, three vintage Monty Nolder Schmitt Stix stickers, new pair of Vans Skate Highs for summer flatland sessions, Dorkin’ in York DVD compendium, Aggro Rag zine.

Day five. Bundled up for a sunny, chilly, and necessary bike ride in to the office this morning. A little sore after a few days of general slothiness, but still felt awesome.

Cool stuff. Lisa killed it on the news this morning, playing checkers, key lime pie, trying to get caught up, classic VSW big logo tee, Swampfest highlight videos, Jail Masters: the home game, shark teeth haul, free plastic airplane toys, 'chit with the lunch brigade.

Tuesday soundtrack. The Spits, Riot, Monster Magnet, Cave In, Valley of the Sun, Faith No More, Metal Church, Judge, MC5, The Faction, Blue Oyster Cult.
